These games are timeless so great scores aren’t surprising (and they’re deserved). But the fact that they held Galaxy 2 back from 3D All Stars so they could sell Galaxy again alongside it 5 years later just leaves a very bitter taste, and forcing those who did buy 3DAS to pay £33 for the second game is just insulting.
Typically I can understand why Nintendo charges what they do for re-releases. I don’t like it but I get it. There is a point though where goodwill should take precedent and they had the opportunity here to re-release 3DAS with Galaxy 2 included while charging a more modest update fee (say £15-£20) for fans who already bought the collection to get the second game. As much as I’d love to revisit Galaxy 2 I’m not supporting this.
@canaryfarmer I’d imagine so but the first game is dirt cheap on the eShop until the end of the month, I’d recommend just playing that and getting the 2nd if you like it enough. Better than paying full price for the sequel and not enjoying it. It’s an incredible game anyway and well worth the £5 odd that it’s selling for atm.
@PROPS The difficulty is the fun! You’re just not playing it right! You should enjoy spending hours fighting the same boss again and again until you beat it because I like it like that! Insinuating that you want options to make it easier affects my enjoyment of the game somehow!
@SpaceboyScreams The people that find the challenge rewarding would still play it that way. Those who don’t would at least have an option to enjoy the things they do like about it rather than dropping it entirely.
We could have this argument for every single game that has difficulty options. There’s always a difficulty that developers would prefer you to play the game on but that’s never stopped them from including other settings and for obvious reasons. I don’t know why devs for games like this and Dark Souls etc. have decided it’s not necessary.
@waldo13 I have the same complaints with From Soft games as I do for this. Not for myself personally when it comes to Silksong as I enjoy the difficulty in 2D games but it’s a genuine turn off for people who would otherwise find a lot to enjoy about it. That’s why I dropped Elden Ring- I really didn’t like the combat enough to deal with the difficulty but there was a world and an atmosphere there that I really wanted to explore but the friction of the combat wasn’t something I could get past. Would it really have mattered to anybody else if I played it on an easier difficulty? Sure it wouldn’t have been the “intended” experience but who cares? Those who want the “true” experience can still have it.
In my eyes as development costs have gotten so ludicrous it would make sense to develop games for lower end hardware like Switch 2 and port up to more powerful machines to cast as wide a net as possible. Surely once you’ve already made a well optimized low end version it should be easy to scale it up on other machines? I hope that’s the tactic Capcom have taken with this game and how they’ll proceed going forwards.
@Qwertyninty Exactly. Too many people forget that Switch 2 (just like Switch) is a handheld console first and foremost and it runs at a fraction of the power of the other consoles. Honestly for it to get current gen ports like this that are mostly (if not entirely) feature complete is impressive. In most cases though there will be trade-offs and 30fps to be able to play it portably is the sacrifice here. If you want to play third party games mainly on the TV then it will never be the best option and it was never going to be.
I’m expecting that it won’t be a huge part of the game and will serve more to get rid of elevators/gunship cutscenes and seamlessly connect everything. I can’t imagine the open space is really all that big to be honest.
My main gripe is that the desert just looks pretty rough overall but I guess that’s down to the Switch 1 holding it back. Still, even if most of the original team for the Prime Trilogy is gone I’m not underestimating Retro on this. The gameplay from the demo events looked stellar. I’m sure it’ll release to glowing praise and that these trailers just aren’t doing it justice.
@Max_the_German You can be as thorough as you want during play testing but you’re never going to completely get rid of all bugs/glitches before launch, especially in a game as big as this and one with so many variables on individual playstyles.
For what it’s worth in the 11 hours I’ve played I haven’t had a single technical issue. It’s a very well made game but even the most polished games of all time have bugs, it’s no surprise this game has small issues in spite of its dev time.
The Bayonetta sections were fantastic. The Jeanne sections were crap and I hated being forced to do them. Viola sections were OK once you attached the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa.
I can’t think of many sequels that spread their time across multiple characters with different playstyles being successful across the board after previous games focused mainly on one but Bayo 3 did not buck that trend for me. Spent half of the game being bored but persevered for the excellent Bayonetta levels. Would have much preferred all that dev time spent on Viola and Jeanne missions to have been focused on Bayonetta stages even if the runtime of the game took a hit as result.
I generally understand Nintendo on their pricing for ports of old games. I don’t like it but when a game like Skyward Sword HD releases and it’s full price I can’t really fault them when the demand is there and people willingly pay the asking price.
This however is a genuine spit in the face when they’ve already released Galaxy on Switch in an arguably more robust package. They could have re-released 3D All Stars with Galaxy 2 included, giving those who missed out last time a chance to get it while offering the sequel as a paid addition for those who own it (and not for the ludicrous price they’re charging now- £10-£15 would have been fair).
Of course I know why they’re doing it like they are because they know people will buy it but not me. I’d rather just play it on Wii or emulate it on Steam Deck than pay for any of the options they’ve gone with.
Is it really confirmed to be open world though? If I had to guess based on what we saw you’ll just traverse the desert etc. to get to new areas rather than have elevators/use the gunship like in past games. Some secrets strewn about sure but I’d bet it’s more about making areas seamlessly connected in a fun way rather than segmenting everything. Something like OoT/TP’s Hyrule Field rather than BotW’s Hyrule.
Love that they’re doing it, hate how expensive it all is and how it’s locked behind expansion pass/can’t be played in 2D. For nearly £70 they should have at least included a cart full of VB games for when the service inevitably shuts down and renders the replica useless beyond decoration.
@EvenStephen7 Yeah that Prime 4 gameplay is the first time I’ve seen anything of it that’s given me pause. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt though, it’s still Retro after all.
That Virtual Boy attachment is one of the most insane things Nintendo have ever done. Like that’s something you’d write in an obviously fake Nintendo Direct leak that’s made to be funny, along with Samus getting a motorbike in Prime 4.
Eh, after being rewarded with getting dropped into Deepnest after beating the Mantis Lords early on in the first game I’ve learnt to approach anything in these games with caution. It’s a cruel trick but pretty funny to be honest.
@SpaceboyScreams I don’t think any of that is true at all. Everybody who is playing it as intended and loving it would still play it the same way and it would still get recognized for being the game it is, the only difference is those who aren’t interested in it because of the difficulty or those who have quit because of it would have a way to enjoy it.
There’s a lot to enjoy about this game- the art, music, characters and world are all a joy to take in and it sucks that people who would otherwise love those things are locked out of it because they can’t deal with the difficulty for whatever reason. Countless games have easier settings that are clearly not the intended experience but they’re still included- I don’t know why games like this and Dark Souls etc. are so often exempt and praised for not having them. Team Cherry even included a mode that isn’t the intended default experience with Steel Soul so what’s stopping them from including the opposite?
@user0 Agreed wholeheartedly. I love the challenge in this game and I would encourage people to play it as intended because it’s so rewarding but an easy mode wouldn’t take anything away from my enjoyment. There are games like Persona 5 where I just really don’t care for the combat but love everything else about it so having an easy mode where I can just breeze through combat is a God send. Maybe I didn’t play it exactly as the devs wanted me to but the alternative would be that I just never played it at all.
@Smithicus It’s all opinions man. If it’s not worth the hype to you then that’s all good but Hollow Knight was insanely popular and is a favourite game of a lot of people, it makes sense why it’s been so anticipated.
Like I’ve never really cared about GTA but
I can understand why GTA VI is so hyped up even if it’s not worth myself getting excited about it.
@MTMike87 This all reminds me of other artist’s responses to Radiohead when they came out with In Rainbows as a free/pay what you want download, claiming it devalued music and would set a bad precedent going forwards when in reality it was just them experimenting because they could get away with it and was (even for the band themselves) never planned to be the norm going forwards. They were big enough to do it and it was ultimately a stunt, most people recognized that.
Similarly this is such a rare case of a developer having total freedom to do whatever they want with an audience who will show up no matter what and most people have the sense to understand that. If this game alone changes value perception for people then I guarantee it’ll be a small minority.
On the contrary most people recognize that it’s worth more and would have been willing to pay more. I seriously doubt this is going to affect people’s perception of how much a 2D Metroidvania should cost because it’s such a unique case. They can price it so low simply because they can afford to, the first game set them for life. This game would set them for life twice over on day one even if they charged £10. Charging more just so other developers can charge more makes no sense.
I mean the first game was priced ridiculously low to begin with and that didn’t stop later more expensive games in the same genre from doing well.
@PinderSchloss Not at all. Same art style and same core gameplay sure but it’s a completely new world, completely new level designs etc. More like Majora’s Mask to Ocarina of Time if we’re going with Zelda comparisons.
Feels like more Hollow Knight which is uh…exactly what I want from a sequel. Hornet plays differently off the bat though which is already a big change. Feels way less oppressive than the first game too, though I won’t be surprised if that changes as it goes on. Art is top tier and the music especially is incredible- spent about 15 minutes in the first town just letting that song play. Loving it.
Glad it’s such a solid port and impressed too. I played this a bit on Xbox when I had Ubisoft+ and enjoyed it, didn’t blow me away but had a decent time. I’ll wait for it to drop to £30 though, not interested in paying more than that for a key card.
@Pak-Man I’m sure they know they’d get away with charging far more for it and fans would be happy to pay it. I think they’re just too humble to do it, they know they’ll still make an absolute fortune charging £20 while still making it affordable for most of their fans. By most accounts they don’t seem to be money driven at all- they will have made so much money from the first game that they could have comfortably retired years ago but they’ve carried on for the love of making games and not to get richer.
They’ll still make an absolute killing pricing it at £20 all while gaining a ton of goodwill from fans who have been waiting so long for it. Also lowers the barrier to those who maybe didn’t like the first game so much but may enjoy this one for whatever big changes it makes from Hollow Knight (if anything).
They could definitely charge more but £20 or less feels on brand for this developer who has historically been nothing but generous (in everything but info on upcoming games 🤪).
@CStallion At least you get a game on the Switch cartridge. I’d rather pay for that and download an update to have it run better on Switch 2 than pay more for a cartridge that just has a download key on it. The way they’re going about it right now I honestly don’t want to pay for either.
@Manguy888A It’s seriously baffling. I almost feel like they didn’t get the word out for the update in the west because it just makes their plan for 1&2 look even more inane when they’ve proven they can do it no problem (and for free too).
With all the impressions I’ve heard so far I’ve fully come around to the idea of this remaster. I was already happy enough just to get a physical version of this game since I did like the original quite a bit (very flawed but still enjoyable) but it really does sound like it’s a huge improvement overall.
@milonorth I mean…that’s how it should have always been. I get why it rarely happens since publishers/platform holders want to keep a strong relationship with retailers and undercutting them on digital sales would destroy that quickly but on the consumer end with digital you’re getting a product that neither has the benefits of a physical release and doesn’t cost nearly as much to produce (no shipping/manufacturing etc.).
If this is true then Christ, that handheld version will be expensive. Assuming the home version will be a decent jump from the PS5 the portable will have to be beefy tech wise to play the same games even at way lower settings, and I’d assume they’d have the same kind of clause that Microsoft do with Xbox Series (games have to run on both hardware sets).
In some ways it makes sense for them to go in this direction but then again it feels like it would dilute what makes PlayStation appealing in the first place. PS5 is a powerful option for people who don’t want to deal with a gaming PC. Since most games target consoles like PS5 you don’t see much compromise on those versions, but if developers have to develop for multiple configurations of the same hardware to release one game for it then you’re not going to be getting what could actually be possible on the “proper” next gen machine. I already wonder how much the Series S has hamstrung this generation considering developers have to make sure their games work on it to release on Xbox.
I don’t know. Nintendo have proven time and time again that they dominate the handheld space and I’m not convinced that Sony trying to do everything at once will work out for them.
@OldGamer999 Bingo. Always annoys me when people say the UK generally doesn’t care about Nintendo- not true at all. Yes their home consoles typically fail to gain traction over here but their handhelds have always been popular- IIRC the DS remains the best selling system in the UK. No surprise that the Switch did so well here and not surprising that Switch 2 is off to a good start either.
Why? I can understand why they would be selective before revealing it to avoid leaks (though having more software being developed for longer isn’t worth that trade off IMO) but as soon as they showed the hardware in January it should have been the green light for anybody wanting a dev kit. Even that would have been later than it should have been for most devs but it’s a head start at least and infinitely better than making them difficult to obtain after launch!
@The_Nintend_Pedant But if you’ve been playing tons of Metroidvanias in those 6 years I imagine you enjoy the genre enough to the point you’re not just going to get sick of it? It’s my favourite genre and I’ve played tons of them this year alone let alone the last 6, still can’t wait for this game.
I’d also argue that very few games in the genre have matched or exceeded the quality of the first game since it came out (PoP: The Lost Crown/Metroid Dread/Ori: WotW are the only 3 I would put on its level) so even if you were to feel burnt out on the volume of Metroidvanias over the last few years it’s still worth looking forward to this considering it’s likely to be something special.
Seems to be more of an obsession with the rollout of games than the actual releases nowadays. I find it so baffling when I see people say they’re no longer interested in this game because of how long it’s taken from announcement to release (same goes for Prime 4); that the wait “killed their hype.” Absolutely bewildering.
As for updates, I didn’t care over the past 6 years that they didn’t say much. Again, same with Prime 4. If it got cancelled they would have said so, otherwise I was happy to get on with my life knowing that it’ll be out someday and now here it is. Happy days.
Wonder how much they’re going to charge for Silksong…clearly they’re not money driven. They could charge whatever they want and get away with it (and I’m sure it’ll be worth it whatever the cost) but I won’t be surprised if it’s sub £20 all things considered
The radio silence never bothered me at all. I think they’d have announced a cancellation if it were to have come to that. Yeah it’s been a long wait but honestly so what? Not like there haven’t been a million other games to play in the mean time. Honestly I’m glad they tuned everything out and didn’t let any kind of pressure get to them.
The Jason Schreier interview confirmed exactly what I’ve been saying for years- they just kept adding stuff to it and had no reason to rush it because money wasn’t an issue after the success of the first game. No big controversy or development hell or anything, just a rare case of a developer having the freedom to make exactly what they want with all the time in the world to do it.
@Dee123 It’s not. It’s day one on Game Pass so it’ll be out on everything at the same time.
@Riverlution I’m really hoping for a shadow drop too but there are Kickstarter backers who are eligible for keys for the game so I would assume they would want to organize with them for launch so they’re not waiting while everybody else is playing it. Then again if I did back the Kickstarter I don’t think I would care and would just buy the game anyway to avoid waiting 🤷
@Bunkerneath Xbox version was announced three years after it was originally revealed 🥴 And it was only planned to be a console exclusive at launch, naturally it was going to end up everywhere eventually. Seems that the longer development went on they just decided to launch it on everything at once instead.
OK, Switch 2 it is then. Was trying to decide between that or Steam Deck for the achievements but higher FPS and hopefully 4K/decent HD rumble pushes S2 over the edge.
Now…are we getting a shadow drop? Surely after all this time it would make the most sense to just release it as soon as it’s ready. Unless they’re planning a physical release for day one which would be nice, but still I think I’d rather just play it as soon as and double dip later.
@Patendo £25 at least, maybe £30. Then again they were so generous with the price of the original despite the fact they could have charged much more so maybe they’ll surprise us with a lower price again.
@Sambuc They don’t even necessarily need to make a whole Switch 2 version, just include a mode that uncaps the frame rate and uses dynamic resolution that tops out at 1080p. Just include a disclaimer on the setting that it’s recommended for Switch 2 users only.
Obviously a proper Switch 2 version that takes full advantage of it would be better but knowing that backwards compatibility can improve games by default as long as they’re set up in a way that it can take advantage of (uncapped FPS etc.) I don’t know why they wouldn’t leverage that.
@Ham-n-jam It really makes no sense how far backwards we’ve gone. Fair enough, I can understand why some games largely don’t have it any more like shooters- if most time spent on them is played online then I can get why they wouldn’t put resources into split screen. I can also see why games that are too graphically intensive wouldn’t get it either. Neither excuse makes sense for this game though, either way you’d think they’d plan for split screen from the start considering it was a core part of the original!

Re: First Impressions: Same But Different? - Our Initial Hours With Hollow Knight: Silksong
Loving it.
Re: Review: Star Wars Outlaws (Switch 2) - An Underrated Adventure, A Super-Solid Port
Glad it’s such a solid port and impressed too. I played this a bit on Xbox when I had Ubisoft+ and enjoyed it, didn’t blow me away but had a decent time. I’ll wait for it to drop to £30 though, not interested in paying more than that for a key card.
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Price Has Been Officially Announced
@Pak-Man I’m sure they know they’d get away with charging far more for it and fans would be happy to pay it. I think they’re just too humble to do it, they know they’ll still make an absolute fortune charging £20 while still making it affordable for most of their fans. By most accounts they don’t seem to be money driven at all- they will have made so much money from the first game that they could have comfortably retired years ago but they’ve carried on for the love of making games and not to get richer.
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong's Price Appears To Have Leaked
They’ll still make an absolute killing pricing it at £20 all while gaining a ton of goodwill from fans who have been waiting so long for it. Also lowers the barrier to those who maybe didn’t like the first game so much but may enjoy this one for whatever big changes it makes from Hollow Knight (if anything).
They could definitely charge more but £20 or less feels on brand for this developer who has historically been nothing but generous (in everything but info on upcoming games 🤪).
Re: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Has Officially Gone Gold, Out This October
@CStallion At least you get a game on the Switch cartridge. I’d rather pay for that and download an update to have it run better on Switch 2 than pay more for a cartridge that just has a download key on it. The way they’re going about it right now I honestly don’t want to pay for either.
Re: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Has Officially Gone Gold, Out This October
@Manguy888A It’s seriously baffling. I almost feel like they didn’t get the word out for the update in the west because it just makes their plan for 1&2 look even more inane when they’ve proven they can do it no problem (and for free too).
Re: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Has Officially Gone Gold, Out This October
Nice one. Now how about they work on getting an upgrade path sorted
Re: Yooka-Replaylee Gets A Launch Date On Switch 2, Full Physical Release Confirmed
Re: Rumour: Sony Is Gunning For The Switch 2 With A Handheld, Dockable PS6

Re: Switch 2 Sales In The US Are Outpacing The Original Console By 75%
B-b-b-but if it’s just a better Switch and it’s called Switch 2 it’s going to faaaaaaail!!!!!
Re: UK Charts: Nintendo's First-Party Switch 2 Games Continue To Dominate
@OldGamer999 Bingo. Always annoys me when people say the UK generally doesn’t care about Nintendo- not true at all. Yes their home consoles typically fail to gain traction over here but their handhelds have always been popular- IIRC the DS remains the best selling system in the UK. No
surprise that the Switch did so well here and not surprising that Switch 2 is off to a good start either.
Re: Developers Reportedly Still Struggling To Get Switch 2 Dev Kits
Re: Opinion: Silksong's Big 'Anticlimactic' Premiere Was Absolutely Perfect
Re: Opinion: Silksong's Big 'Anticlimactic' Premiere Was Absolutely Perfect
@MSaturn Also helps that the core team is just 3 people
Re: Opinion: Silksong's Big 'Anticlimactic' Premiere Was Absolutely Perfect
Seems to be more of an obsession with the rollout of games than the actual releases nowadays. I find it so baffling when I see people say they’re no longer interested in this game because of how long it’s taken from announcement to release (same goes for Prime 4); that the wait “killed their hype.” Absolutely bewildering.
As for updates, I didn’t care over the past 6 years that they didn’t say much. Again, same with Prime 4. If it got cancelled they would have said so, otherwise I was happy to get on with my life knowing that it’ll be out someday and now here it is. Happy days.
Re: Kirby Air Riders' City Trial Mode Looks Just As Bonkers As We'd Hoped
@Ham-n-jam Brilliant news, thank you! Why they didn’t confirm this in the Direct is way beyond me but oh well, buzzing it’s in there!
Re: Hollow Knight Has Now Sold Almost 15 Million Copies
Wonder how much they’re going to charge for Silksong…clearly they’re not money driven. They could charge whatever they want and get away with it (and I’m sure it’ll be worth it whatever the cost) but I won’t be surprised if it’s sub £20 all things considered
Re: Team Cherry's Already Got "Ambitious" Plans For Hollow Knight: Silksong Additional Content

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Finally Has A Release Date
The Jason Schreier interview confirmed exactly what I’ve been saying for years- they just kept adding stuff to it and had no reason to rush it because money wasn’t an issue after the success of the first game. No big controversy or development hell or anything, just a rare case of a developer having the freedom to make exactly what they want with all the time in the world to do it.
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong "Special Announcement" Is Coming Today
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Offers Buttery Smooth Performance On Switch 2
Re: Tales Of Xillia Remastered Coming This October, Confirmed 30fps For Switch
@Sambuc They don’t even necessarily need to make a whole Switch 2 version, just include a mode that uncaps the frame rate and uses dynamic resolution that tops out at 1080p. Just include a disclaimer on the setting that it’s recommended for Switch 2 users only.
Obviously a proper Switch 2 version that takes full advantage of it would be better but knowing that backwards compatibility can improve games by default as long as they’re set up in a way that it can take advantage of (uncapped FPS etc.) I don’t know why they wouldn’t leverage that.
Re: Kirby Air Riders' City Trial Mode Looks Just As Bonkers As We'd Hoped
@Ham-n-jam It really makes no sense how far backwards we’ve gone. Fair enough,
I can understand why some games largely don’t have it any more like shooters- if most time spent on them is played online then I can get why they wouldn’t put resources into split screen. I can also see why games that are too graphically intensive wouldn’t get it either. Neither excuse makes sense for this game though, either way you’d think they’d plan for split screen from the start considering it was a core part of the original!
