So many easy responses he could have gone with that would have been received so much better. “Unfortunately the game industry isn’t immune to costs going up just like everything else so sadly it has to be more expensive, but I promise it will be worth the higher price.” Done.
His actual response just felt totally dismissive and ignorant. I get that we’re talking about luxuries here so there’s only so mad you can get as far as price increases go but still.
@8bit-Man I think it really just comes down to limiting any confusion. Even if you risk confusing only a small percentage of an audience with a name like “Super Switch”, is it worth it when you can convey exactly what it is with a number and confuse nobody? Especially when it’s been established in tech for decades now that a sequential number typically means the current generation model. I would love for it to have been called Switch Advance but in a world of PS5 Pros and such that really would sound like a mid gen refresh and not a next gen machine.
Plus considering how much the launch is leaning on Switch 1 content it’s even more important that they make it clear on day one this is an all new device and not a stop gap. It may be a boring naming convention but it ultimately doesn’t matter if it serves its purpose as clearly as possible.
@Tyranexx I think X would have been appropriate if they went full on with crossovers. To be honest that was the gimmick I was expecting but I’m glad it’s not… it’ll be nice if they do add the odd character from other games like they did in 8 but going all in would really just take away from what makes Smash special.
@montrayjak It is exactly what the name suggests though- a successor to the Switch. It’s not a halfway step or a “Pro” model or anything- it’s the console Nintendo will be supporting for the next 8+ years (assuming it does well enough), and at some point it’ll be the system they exclusively support. I think any name aside from Switch 2 would just cause confusion and would ultimately be disingenuous to what the machine actually is.
I get you that it’s staying very close to the Switch blueprint and doesn’t feel like a clean cut off like past consoles but that’s down to what people expect and want nowadays. People have invested heavily into digital libraries and subscriptions etc. and want everything to carry over so keeping things uniform makes sense, plus the Switch brand is a juggernaut so it makes sense they don’t want to shake things up much. I do wish some things were changed up a bit more drastically like the menu UI etc. but at the end of the day it comes down to the games you can play on it so it’s no big deal in my opinion.
And I guess they were never going to come out and say it out loud but clearly the real reason it shifted to Switch 2 is because MK8D sold ridiculously well, probably far beyond what Nintendo had anticipated. Holding it back for the next console was the best move really especially if keeping it on Switch was going to hamstring their ambitions for it.
@babybilly Yeah that really annoyed me too. Loved the game in spite of the story but it definitely didn’t stick to the promise they set up for it. I know the ending would have been a downer had they made it canon but it would have been something special if they committed to it being a true prequel…instead the ending was just a big whatever.
@Shade_Koopa Switch/Switch 2 is nothing like 3DS/New 3DS. Switch 2 is a completely new system to the point where even backwards compatibility is partly emulated.
I get it, it’s similar to the Switch right down to the menu UI but it’s as much of a new console as the GameCube was to the N64.
@rvcolem1 This is what’s irked me with some of response to the console price in particular. Seen people saying it’s way too much just for the machine itself…we’ve known it was going to be expensive before the thing was even revealed and we’ve known it was going to be announced any day for the last few years. Plenty of time to put a bit of money away each month in preparation which is exactly what I’ve been doing for ages now. Besides, all things considered I don’t think £430 with Mario Kart is unfair at all.
For anyone who hasn’t been in a position to save I feel bad for them but in that case surely buying video games is a low priority for them anyway.
@themightyant If I had to guess I’d bet that Nintendo’s library will work as expected and they’ll put the effort in to make sure the bigger third party releases work. Wouldn’t be surprised if smaller games that have issues will be left up to the developers/publishers themselves to address but hopefully that isn’t a widespread problem to begin with. Hard to tell right now though, that compatibility chart/list they put out doesn’t really give a great idea of just how solid things will be across the board.
@Magician Honestly no wonder third parties are going the game key route if it costs that much per card, especially if their game doesn’t need that amount of space. It sucks that Nintendo aren’t offering more size options… I suspect they’re trying to accelerate the adoption of digital over physical without abandoning the option entirely.
I was surprised it wasn’t shown in the April Direct honestly. I’d hedged my bets that Cyberpunk, Elden Ring and RDR2 would be the 3 biggest third party showings
@SpaceboyScreams I’m hoping that these games have sparked a change in how TPC approaches the mainline games going forwards. After Nintendo’s apology for the state of the games I imagine they’re the most frustrated by the debacle especially considering that many people believe Pokémon is a purely Nintendo owned IP. Not good for their reputation at all.
Still looks rough but I never expected it to look better, just a better frame rate. If they can hit 60fps it’d be a major upgrade but even hitting a constant 30 would be a big improvement.
From the ask the developer interview about backwards compatibility…
“You mentioned that new technology is used to achieve compatibility, but are there situations where playing Switch games on Switch 2 will enhance the gameplay experience?
Dohta: When we tried running Switch games on Switch 2, there were some where loading times became faster, or game performance became more stable, so we realized that the overall gameplay experience could improve.”
So yeah, definitely sounds like games that struggle with their frame rates etc. should have issues ironed out just by playing on Switch 2 without specific patches needing to be made and that would mean both Zelda’s should hit 60 without even downloading the updates.
@speedracer216 The Switch processor was already 2 years old by the time it released and was underclocked so it was even less capable. And yet here we are 8 years later.
@FormerGameAddict I seriously doubt they would have chosen hardware that’s a generational leap over the original for a “Pro” model. If that ever existed I don’t believe the Switch 2 is a rebrand of it at all.
Not at all interested in it. But I can see it being a big deal for kids and I imagine that’s really the demographic Nintendo are going for with this.
I just want to know if there’s voice chat for randoms in Mario Kart World. They did it for MK8D so I hope they don’t regress with the new game but that would be a very Nintendo move to focus a ton on voice chat and restrict it to friends in their own games 🙄
I’m excited about the mouse being used to compliment the traditional dual analogue set up. I’m imagining menu management in RPGs or fine tuning your aim in a shooter (when sniping for example) and then snapping back to typical controls when lifting the joy con back up. If it’s used smartly and widely enough I can see it becoming something that feels unnatural when it’s not there, like playing a shooter on a controller without gyro.
I don’t understand why, if you bought the game in early access, you would air your frustration at whatever update you didn’t like on Steam reviews. You know the game is going to be ever changing when you buy it in early access and developers have discords and forums etc. to take feedback on changes. That’s the whole point. To review it negatively on Steam does exactly what Mahler says- drives people who discover it on the storefront away from trying it. Which, when it’s now being self funded and needs people to buy it to keep development going is obviously not a good thing. If you’ve already paid for the game I’d imagine it’s in your interest to want to see it get finished.
I have issues with EA and don’t generally buy games in that way for these reasons (potential to not get finished, changing things I like and staying that way etc.) but if I were to buy this then review bombing to get things changed would not be the way I’d go about it. Unless the devs did something egregious or went completely against the initial promise of the game that you paid into I don’t understand why you’d respond in that way.
I love all these weirdo inclusions in this game but to get Sidestepper before E.Gadd? No Diddy Kong but we can play as a Cheep Cheep? To call it a disgrace would be strong but I’m going to say it anyway. It’s a disgrace.
@Regulus6891 “Video games have somehow avoiding raising the prices for nearly 3 decades“
I would imagine it’s down to how huge gaming has become over the last few decades…companies have been able to afford to keep the prices largely the same because so many more people have been buying them. I guess we’ve just reached the point where that’s unsustainable with the rising of costs across the board. That and no doubt some greed in many cases.
@Sine Yeah I’m definitely not saying everything they do is great but there is still a baseline level of quality and polish that they (mostly) aspire to for their games before they release them, even if the overall package is less than I’d like. For as many issues as I had with the Switch Mario sports games I can’t deny that they were still good overall. Even with their “worst” port effort being DKCR HD I’d say the issues are more nitpicks than anything. Disregarding the price (which I think is a separate issue) the overall release was still great.
Regardless of opinions on the games themselves though I’d say it’s production value that you can’t really fault them on and AI generated art would definitely cheapen their image on that front.
@Sine I would still say that even at their worst output there is still a respectable level of quality (most of the time). Not that everything they touch is gold (Everybody 1 2 Switch…) but even the Mario sports games are solid at their core.
Pokémon games as of late are the worst things they put their name to and definitely don’t match up with the typical bar that they’ve set but that’s something Nintendo can’t control themselves.
Honestly if there’s any publisher out there who would be against generative AI it’s Nintendo. For all their faults I don’t think they can be accused of often rushing their projects or cutting corners in their games which is exactly what generative AI allows for.
I do also think they fundamentally care about the quality of their games and wouldn’t allow things like AI to cheapen them.
Nothing for them to defend. It’s actually unfair to Nintendo that they’re expected to massively shake up their hardware with each machine when they’ve made iterative consoles several times before. They mostly take big risks when they’re backed into a corner and iterate when things go well and that’s always been the case.
Doing something different for the sake of it is how we ended up with the Wii U.
Huge shame this never clicked with me. Tried it a bunch of times since getting it at launch -even started it again earlier today!- but every time it just never gels with me despite my love for the aesthetic and the Metroidvania genre in general.
On another note it’s astonishing how close the UI is to the OG Switch. Like you’d think that would be a key thing to change up for marketing in particular since the hardware itself doesn’t look too different besides the size.
Bring back ratings and allow actual reviews like on Steam.
Also just have two new release tabs- one with all new releases and one called “notable new releases” or something- have a dedicated team of people to actually play what’s coming through and decide if it should get visibility amongst other worthwhile games. Shouldn’t need to play much of a game to know if it’s trash or not.
Honestly for a company with such an eye for quality it’s incredible how Nintendo allowed the eShop to become the cesspit that it has. I am actually all for any developer to have the freedom to make and sell whatever garbage they want but that doesn’t mean Nintendo should give them the visibility they’ve been allowing them for so long.
“people expect games that are ever more ambitious and therefore expensive to develop to cost the same“
I guess but then there are countless small scale indie games that have become unfathomably popular and recent games like Clair Obscur have shown that people will turn up for smaller budget games that are smartly designed and priced affordably.
Feels like a self inflicted wound that the big publishers have set upon themselves in deciding that everything has to be the biggest game ever. Of course there’s demand for big budget ambitious games but there’s still plenty of space for cheaper AA games to exist and the big players (aside from Nintendo) seem to have largely moved away from them. Nobody exemplifies that departure more than Sony who once complimented their big games with Japan Studio oddities but now have no interest in games like those at all.
I tried it for a few hours when I had Ubisoft+ and still had an Xbox Series S and had a pretty good time with it. If the Switch 2 version is decent I’ll give it a proper play through!
@Wilforce They pretty much proved the legitimacy of the leaks by showing their accessories for it at a public forum. No company is going to waste money producing accessories and a space at a trade show to show them off if they weren’t convinced the specs were real. And of course if Nintendo have an entity that were purporting the leaks to go after then they will- the leaks beforehand were largely revealed anonymously.
Either way, Nintendo can dress it up as damaging to sales or to their brand etc. (the extent of which is debatable) but clearly this is really an effort to deter any third parties from trying something like this again in the future. It’s not hard to imagine why they don’t want things to leak and why they respond so seriously.
Clair Obscur. Great combat, story is great so far and it’s very linear which in my case is a good thing- keeps things moving a long without trying to figure out what to do next.
Got to be HD-2D remake surely. The original is timeless as it is and doesn’t need the full remake treatment like a full 3D reimagining- HD2D really is a tasteful way of modernizing the look while keeping the spirit of the original intact. That along with an orchestral score and some QOL improvements are really all it needs, especially when the original hasn’t been made widely available over the years all things considered.
@SalvorHardin I doubt it…Hollow Knight is so big that Silksong will be a huge hit whenever it releases.
I think the real reason is that they really can just afford to release it when they think it’s ready and on their own terms. One of the game testers for Team Cherry said the devs worked 12 hour days, 6-7 days a week for two years for Hollow Knight. Now that budget is presumably no concern considering how well the first game sold they’ve likely had a much healthier work schedule (which for a small team is naturally going to make things take longer) but also they can just keep adding things to it since nothing is forcing them to get it out of the door.
Too early to say that it’s over for Platinum but it’s becoming less and less like the Platinum we know. I hope they can backtrack on whatever’s been going wrong and still continue as a solid dev
@PikminMarioKirby Switch 2 Edition is just upgraded Switch 1 games. Eg. Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World are Switch 2 exclusives, BotW/TotK are Switch 2 Editions etc.
Really enjoying this game. Always been a fan of the Mario RPG/Paper Mario style of combat, makes things much more involved.
@Dm9982 Make sure you go through the steps to unlock the graphic settings…the default ones aren’t great. I’ve got it looking pretty rough overall but the frame rate is solid especially in combat which is the most important thing considering the timing of counters/dodges. Decent experience on Deck overall though!
Really just scummy on Nintendo’s part, not just this but their approach to credits in general. At the end of the day there are people behind the art that makes companies like Nintendo their fortunes and credit where credit is due is meaningful and costs nothing.
…OK, maybe calling the DK Rap “art” is debatable 🥴 But still. I think the joy Grant describes of having his kids see his name in the Mario film would have been worth the seconds it would have taken to include.
Already got a pack of third party screen protectors; will get a third party case before launch. Other than those necessities I’m in no rush to buy anything else.
Honestly fair play to Nintendo for supporting the old controllers though. Not defending the prices for the new stuff but it’s not that huge of a deal when the old accessories (and by extension cheaper third party ones) will still work just fine.
@AnonyQ Yeah I think it’ll finally be worth getting when Switch 2 launches with the Zelda upgrade packs and GameCube games. I only wish that they’d offer it as a monthly subscription instead of only a year though- I would have been paying an extra few pounds a month for it if they’d given me the option. I know in the long run it would cost more (which works out for Nintendo anyway if you pay monthly for a year) but I just don’t think I would currently get enough use out of what it offers to pay for a full year.

Japan one is very classy. Maybe the “Conquer your fears” text is a bit much but otherwise I love it.
Game itself had nothing on the SSX games though.
Re: The Company That "Leaked" Switch 2 Is Being Sued By Nintendo
Re: The Company That "Leaked" Switch 2 Is Being Sued By Nintendo
I really question what was going through their heads when they decided to do this. Not a lot apparently
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (3rd May)
Clair Obscur. Great combat, story is great so far and it’s very linear which in my case is a good thing- keeps things moving a long without trying to figure out what to do next.
Re: Rumour: Yuji Horii Might Have Let Slip Some Massive Remake News
Got to be HD-2D remake surely. The original is timeless as it is and doesn’t need the full remake treatment like a full 3D reimagining- HD2D really is a tasteful way of modernizing the look while keeping the spirit of the original intact. That along with an orchestral score and some QOL improvements are really all it needs, especially when the original hasn’t been made widely available over the years all things considered.
Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Will Be Playable At An Australian Museum In September
Re: Astral Chain Director/Nier Automata Lead Designer Quits PlatinumGames
Too early to say that it’s over for Platinum but it’s becoming less and less like the Platinum we know. I hope they can backtrack on whatever’s been going wrong and still continue as a solid dev
Re: How Do Nintendo Switch 2 Virtual Game Cards Work? - Game Transfer & Lending Guide
@PikminMarioKirby Switch 2 Edition is just upgraded Switch 1 games. Eg. Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World are Switch 2 exclusives, BotW/TotK are Switch 2 Editions etc.
Re: Opinion: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Best Gameplay Feature Is Straight Out Of Mario's Playbook
Re: Cyberpunk 2077 On Switch 2 Is "Best Way" To Play Handheld Says CD Projekt Red
@N00BiSH I have it on my Steam Deck and it plays fine but going off of this trailer it definitely looks better on Switch 2.
Re: Grant Kirkhope Apparently Got A Bananas Reason For His Missing Mario Movie Credit
Re: Poll: Which Switch 2 Accessories Are You Picking Up At Launch?
Already got a pack of third party screen protectors; will get a third party case before launch. Other than those necessities I’m in no rush to buy anything else.
Honestly fair play to Nintendo for supporting the old controllers though. Not defending the prices for the new stuff but it’s not that huge of a deal when the old accessories (and by extension cheaper third party ones) will still work just fine.
Re: Random: Speedrunner Beats Zelda: Breath of the Wild At Switch 2 Experience
@AnonyQ Yeah I think it’ll finally be worth getting when Switch 2 launches with the Zelda upgrade packs and GameCube games. I only wish that they’d offer it as a monthly subscription instead of only a year though- I would have been paying an extra few pounds a month for it if they’d given me the option. I know in the long run it would cost more (which works out for Nintendo anyway if you pay monthly for a year) but I just don’t think I would currently get enough use out of what it offers to pay for a full year.

@Fighting_Game_Loser He is one with Yunobo
Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Finds Success In Switch 2 Lottery
He’s going to sell it for sure ain’t no way Nintendo aren’t sending him one for free. Masahiro Scalperai
Re: Madden NFL 26 Confirmed For Switch 2, But College Football Isn't In The Starting Lineup
@MarioBrickLayer I’m sure there’s at least three more out there!
