Re: Nintendo: Switch 2's Backwards Compatibility Feature Is The "Best Direction" For Consumers

larryisaman

@N00BiSH I don’t think they’d get away with rereleasing them at all. I know Switch was port city for Wii U games but that made sense…not so much here.

If they’re smart about it they’ll update a bunch of games for day one. Considering that the hardware is so similar to the original they need as much compelling software out of the gate as they can and being able to play games like BotW/TotK at higher resolutions/frame rates on day one would be a great reason to upgrade. It’d also allow them to market and sell more copies of old games (they could just re-release them with some Switch 2 branding if they wanted).

Hopefully such upgrades would be free but if they really have to charge for a fee for them I’m sure plenty would pay it.

Re: Talking Point: Did All The Switch 2 Leaks 'Damage' Nintendo Or The Console's Reveal?

larryisaman

Took the wind out of the reveal’s sails a bit but honestly a bigger and better Switch is what I expected before the leaks anyway so I don’t think they ruined much really. It’s not like there was some huge gimmick they were trying to keep under wraps that got spoilt.

Either way, most of the exciting things like new software features and of course the games are still a huge unknown outside of a glimpse of Mario Kart. With how iterative it is I can’t imagine they actually wanted to show it first in this way since it’s the software that’s going to really show off what’s new about it…this reveal really does feel like a reaction to the leaks. I know they showed the first Switch 2/3 months before the full unveiling but this feels different.

Re: Video: We've Spotted Some Secrets In The Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Trailer

larryisaman

I don’t think those are IR sensors and that’s partly why there’s the disclaimer about it not being fully compatible with Switch games (1 2 Switch and…er…Wario Ware?), on top of Labo and Ringfit seeing as though the new joy cons won’t fit in them.

Hopefully you can still use old joy cons if you want to play said games.

@john_lennon999 I would bet a lot of money that most people use one card and only swap it out when they upgrade the size of it

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Pins Hopes On Familiar Fun With Switch 2

larryisaman

@Gamecuber Exactly. And it’s not even been that long since they last did it- the 3DS was just a DS but more powerful and with more features. Yes it had the 3D screen but ultimately it was a gimmick that many people didn’t care about and was so unimportant overall that they soon made models without it altogether.

If it works once then Nintendo will try it again. If that fails then that’s when they upend everything and try something different, so it really shouldn’t surprise people that they’re not doing anything crazy this time.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Pins Hopes On Familiar Fun With Switch 2

larryisaman

@GrailUK I’m convinced that most people who assert that Steam Decks and other handheld PCs are a threat to Nintendo don’t own one themselves. I love my Steam Deck to death but there’s a whole list of reasons why it (and handheld PCs on the whole) doesn’t serve the same market as the Switch/Switch 2.

I’m sure there’ll be people out there who won’t buy a Switch 2 now that there are other options that can play big AAA third party games on the go but is that the market who made the Switch such a success to begin with? Absolutely not

Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?

larryisaman

@8bit-Man Wii U wrote the rule book for what Nintendo shouldn’t do going forwards and rule number one is “don’t give the successor to your hugely popular console a stupid confusing name.”

Everyone gets what a sequential number next to a device name means, whether you’re tech savvy or not. Nobody is confused by what a PS5 is or whether iPhone 16 is different to a 15, so going by the same naming conventions just makes sense. It’s honestly about time they did.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Pins Hopes On Familiar Fun With Switch 2

larryisaman

I don’t think it can be overstated just how huge it will be to have Nintendo’s developers working with hardware comparable to even a base PS4. They’ve been stuck working on consoles that weren’t miles away from what the PS3 was capable of for the last 12 years and that thing is nearly 20 years old. Just seeing what they’ll be able to do with a new Zelda or Xenoblade etc. is going to be amazing and I’d honestly rather take an iterative machine that allows just that than have them go all in on a gimmick just for the sake of doing something different.

Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?

larryisaman

@Res462 The more I think about it the more that this feels like a response to the leaks, like they weren’t planning to show anything until April but had to get something official out before things got even more out of control. Not even building up to the announcement or anything…whole thing is pretty bizarre honestly.

Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?

larryisaman

Console itself is exactly what I wanted from a Switch successor, right down to the name. As for the reveal though, I was hoping they’d go into at least some depth into the hardware features and some of the software on the console side (home screen, eShop etc.). Did its job of just getting the thing out there but I just wish there was a little more. I guess that’s what they want us to feel though.

@LEGENDARY_DRAGON Doing anything but 2 would have been confusing to many people. Yes, “Super Switch” or “Switch Advance” or whatever would have been fun but you can absolutely guarantee there would be people out there who wouldn’t understand at first blush what the system is with whatever extra word they added, and it would have been even worse if they changed the name altogether. Not worth the confusion when a simple 2 tells you everything you need to know.

Re: Rumour: Switch Virtual Console Was Apparently Nintendo's "Original Plan"

larryisaman

@Zenibeans I think it’s just that they want that constant flow of revenue, but I’d argue that the classic games are not the main draw for the service and most people who pay for it are specifically paying to play games online and the NES/SNES/Game Boy games are a bonus. I think they’d still have plenty of people subscribing as well as buying games individually if it were an option- I know I would be. And as for expansion pass, I’m not going to pay that extra £15 but I would happily pay £10 here and there for the various N64 and GBA games so they’re losing money out of me on that end (and I’m sure there are many people who feel the same way). Either way I’d rather see more unique online content like Tetris 99 to incentivize subscribing than more classic games.

@RadioHedgeFund True, but it’s still a greater sense of ownership than a subscription. I can still go back to my Wii from 2006 and download all the VC games I bought during that era and that was nearly 20 years ago…I can’t imagine the online service as we know it today will still be the same in 20 years.

Re: Rumour: Switch Virtual Console Was Apparently Nintendo's "Original Plan"

larryisaman

@ibookboyuk I just don’t see why they can’t do both. If anything having them available to buy seperately would only bolster the value of the subscription, like if they charged £10 a GBA game they could effectively say “hey, you could buy 4 GBA games…or for a fiver less get a full year of expansion pass and get those games plus a ton more.”

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Defined The Switch Generation

larryisaman

@Friendly I agree. I couldn’t believe it when it was announced for Switch, and then for it to be a great version…completely changed my perception of what the system was capable of. Witcher 3 was great but it was Doom that made me think anything was possible going forwards

Re: Is This Our Best Look Yet At 'Switch 2'?

larryisaman

@GrailUK Everybody expecting them to reinvent the wheel again are ignorant to the fact that for a long time their consoles have been a response to their previous generation. Wii was a response to them failing with GameCube despite it being powerful so they left that arms race. They saw how well a gimmicky controller helped sell the Wii so they doubled down and it blew up in their faces. Then they decided they couldn’t compete with a dedicated home console any more so they put everything into a handheld that could be played on the TV since the tech at the time was feasible to do so.

When you look at the 3DS it was very much a straight up DS successor. The 3D screen was great but you could literally never turn it on if you didn’t want to and they later dropped it entirely for the 2DS models anyway- it was never necessary outside of maybe a few levels in Mario 3D Land. At that point it really was just a souped up DS with extra features, which is all they really needed after the mammoth success of the DS. So why everybody expects them to radically change things up every time is beyond me when they’ve already demonstrated that they’ll do “the same but better” when it makes sense to. In this case, doing anything but that would be a huge mistake.

Re: Review: Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP (Switch) - This Choppy Remaster Of A Cult Gem Doesn't Bring Any Cheer

larryisaman

@BulkSlash Yeah I got Eternal at launch for PS4 and got a few levels in before dropping it…bought it again later that year when it finally released on Switch and played through it in a few days. Convenience of being able to play wherever I want is huge for me and well worth sacrificing visuals/performance for it as long as the game is still playable. I could never go back to a traditional home console at this point, Switch (2) and a handheld PC from here on out

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

larryisaman

I remember first hearing that the NX was going to be a mobile chipset leagues behind what the PS4/Xbox One could do and thinking it was going to be DOA before even seeing the reveal.

Fast forward to today and we continue to get stunning first party games, impressive third party ports and it’s still an indie powerhouse. A potential jump to PS4 level specs this time isn’t really concerning to me.

Re: Review: Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP (Switch) - This Choppy Remaster Of A Cult Gem Doesn't Bring Any Cheer

larryisaman

@Rayquaza2510 I loved both Doom games and Nier Automata on Switch 🤷‍♂️

I could have played them on PS4, and same today with games like the Dragon Quest 3 remake- could play it on Xbox where it looks and runs way better but I’m happy to take the hit in performance to play handheld. For more modern AAA games handheld devices are almost always going to be worse performance wise than what you can get on other platforms, it’s just up to you if that’s a trade off worth dealing with. For me (and many others), it is.

Re: PlatinumGames Is Celebrating 15 Years Of Bayonetta With Year-Long Event

larryisaman

I hope Nintendo continues to publish Bayonetta games. After 3 exclusives it feels like a Nintendo franchise at this point anyway.

Not that it really matters, I’m happy to see it continue regardless of who funds it. It’s just that there’s something nice about Nintendo taking the franchise under their wing when nobody else cared and continued to foster it despite it not being a huge seller. Would be nice to see that continue.

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con

larryisaman

@Keman “That Nintendo has been silent this so far despite all those "leaks" speaks itself. Because no NDAs has been broken this so far, since nothing of value has been leaked yet.“

If they say anything about them it confirms they’re real.

As for the form factor being similar, what are you expecting? There’s not a lot you can do with it, and either way so what. There’s plenty of ways to differentiate it from the Switch- colours, name, dock design, exclusives.

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con

larryisaman

@Dee123 100%. Everywhere I look there are people saying they should just announce it with all the hardware leaks…big deal. I’m sure Nintendo aren’t pleased these leaks are happening but ultimately they’ve indicated themselves that it’ll be a straight up Switch 2 (calling it the “Switch Successor”, confirming backwards compatibility) so it’s not a revelation that the form factor is so similar to the original.

They’ve got their plans for how they want to debut it, not to mention their contracts with third parties who will have their own plans surrounding the reveal. Don’t get me wrong I’m dying to see it but they’ll show it when they show it 🤷‍♂️

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th January)

larryisaman

Spider-Man Remastered on Steam Deck. Haven’t played it since it launched on PS4; fantastic game and still looks phenomenal. If the Switch 2 is “only” as powerful as a PS4 then we’re still in for a treat, games on that thing still look incredible and this is proof (it probably looks even worse than the original with the settings I’m using and it still looks great).

Also some DQ3-HD2D here and there. Fun to grind while listening to podcast or watching a TV show that doesn’t demand your full attention!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (New Year Edition)

larryisaman

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D. Was worried I wasn’t going to really enjoy it after hearing a few people say it still feels like a product of its time but I’m having a great time with it. Visuals are stunning and yeah, the gameplay is basic but that’s exactly what I’m in the mood for- just a great world to explore with ace music and without a ton of mechanics getting in the way.

Re: Atlus Lead Explains Why Persona Protagonists Are High School Males

larryisaman

@VoidofLight Fair point! Though I would imagine Persona is more popular today than it’s ever been so hopefully 6 will have a bigger budget than before, though it’ll come down to whether they think it’s worth the extra time/money to do it. Considering only having a male protagonist hasn’t stopped women from enjoying these games though I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t bother.
