Re: Horror Dev Bloober Team On Its New Exclusive: "This Is A Vision That Could Only Exist On Nintendo Hardware."

larryisaman

The only thing that would make this statement true would be if it’s using a Nintendo IP/published by Nintendo. Otherwise there’s nothing about Switch/2 that can’t be done elsewhere- even if it’s using the split joy cons and heavily using motion control that can still be done with VR setups for example. He’s probably just trying to build hype but it would be cool if this was a Nintendo collaboration (I remember that was reported to be the case with this game but it was debunked/not confirmed?).

Re: Reminder: It's Time To Rate Your Switch 1 & 2 Games Of The Year

larryisaman

Got to be Bananza for me. Just an absolute joy of a game.

Silksong at number 2…loved it, probably would have edged out DK for number 1 but I think the difficulty was just too much a lot of the time. Felt the first game struck a much better balance with its level of challenge. Still, so much to love about it- I will go back to it and start/finish act 3 in the new year.

Prime 4 at 3…I really thought in those first few hours that it would be my GOTY but by the end the effects of its development hell really came into view. I still really enjoyed it on the whole and the highs were easily some of my favourite gaming moments of the year but sadly they dropped the ball in a few areas that I can’t excuse.

Re: Fans Uncover Unused Dialogue From Metroid Prime 4

larryisaman

@FX29 She even spoke directly to Adam in Fusion. She was only ever mute in games because she didn’t have anybody to speak to, it should have never been a controversial decision to have her talk in games where it made sense to. Definitely an overcorrection for Other M which is misjudged- it wasn’t the fact that she spoke in that game that annoyed people, it was the writing itself.

Re: Fans Uncover Unused Dialogue From Metroid Prime 4

larryisaman

My biggest annoyance with the talking NPCs isn’t the characters themselves but the fact that Samus doesn’t speak back. I imagine the backlash to Other M is why they muzzled her in this game but it just makes interactions so awkward and unintentionally funny at times. If they were going to go so heavy on the dialogue then just have her speak or don’t bother having other characters that show up so frequently. I’m not that interested in the story in Metroid games but if they want to go heavy on it then at least do it in a way that isn’t so jarring.

Re: UK Charts: Metroid Prime 4 Falls From The Top Ten

larryisaman

Majority of people who are interested in Prime 4 will have bought it on day one- it’s just one of those kinds of games. Not surprising to see it drop off at all.

For what it’s worth most of my friends list (20+ people) have been playing it and it was number 1 on the eShop for at least a while, not sure if it still is. I think when all is said and done it’ll be at least successful enough for them to do another.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th December)

larryisaman

Gearing up to finish Prime 4…at the infamous end game that has people up in arms.

Overall I’ve adored it. Absolutely gorgeous, incredible atmosphere and plays great. The writing is pretty poor outside of the Lamorn stuff, the level design a bit too linear and this end section is padding at its worst but still- it’s Metroid Prime and there hasn’t been anything else like it since Corruption. The highs far outweigh the lows for me and I really think a lot of the negative response to it has been unfair. Hopefully they get another crack at it with a 5th game now they’ve got the foundations built up again.

Re: UK Charts: Metroid Prime 4 Debuts Behind Mario Kart World And EA Sports FC 26

larryisaman

Really hope it sells well enough for Nintendo to green light another. This was likely to have been the most expensive game Nintendo has ever produced (as far as development costs go) so hopefully between sales of the game and amiibos they’ll at least break even. Another crack at it with feedback taken to heart could result in something really spectacular (and surely wouldn’t take so long to make).

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metroid Prime 4: Beyond?

larryisaman

@Apebitmusic I get you but it’s just Metroid doing Metroid things. There has to be tunnels for Samus to roll through, coloured doors, missile expansions and energy tanks conveniently sprawled around for Samus to find and technology that just so happens to work with her suit whether it was designed for it or not. I’m glad they don’t think too much about the absurdity of it- it’s an absurd series!

Re: Metacritic Shares Updated List Of "Every Metroid Game, Ranked"

larryisaman

@KoopaTheGamer Different time. It was a technical showpiece for the DS and just having Prime gameplay on a handheld was amazing for 2006. Plus an online FPS for a handheld was a novelty (and it did it very well). I imagine most of the reviews at the time amounted to “the single player is OK but it’s the online you should really buy it for.”

Nowadays taken for what it is, yeah it definitely shouldn’t score so highly but I loved it at the time and can see why it was reviewed favorably.

Re: Poll: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Is Out On Switch 2 And Switch This Week, Will You Be Getting It?

larryisaman

Most excited I’ve been for a game in a long time.

I’ve seen complaints that it’s “just” more Metroid Prime and…so? That’s exactly what I want. It’s been 18 years since the last one and there’s never been anything like the Prime games since.

And I’m not giving it unfair expectations like many people I’ve seen. It’s largely a different studio to the one that made the original games and it’s their return to the series after a very long time. If I come away from it thinking it was a good Prime game I’ll be happy.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Meet The Team

larryisaman

@LastFootnote I agree, but as you can see from the reactions to the pre-release info so far the consensus is “this isn’t Metroid Prime!” (again, despite it not being particularly shocking considering where they went with Prime 3). I think a new subtitle would have allowed them to relieve some of the expectations of what the game should be. Probably wouldn’t matter anyway because people would complain regardless but still.

Either way I think calling it 4 without re-releasing 2 and 3 is a bad move in itself even when it’s not necessary to play the rest of the trilogy. Already seen people say they don’t want to jump into 4 without playing the other games, they’d have been better off dropping the number and not having to explain that it’s a new story.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Meet The Team

larryisaman

I really don’t think they should have called this Prime 4. Should have gone with a new subseries (Prime Beyond?) to convey that yes this is Prime gameplay and follows on from the trilogy but it’s going to try new things.

Not that it should really surprise anyone that they’re going down this path anyway because Prime 3 already flipped the script on what a Prime game is and set the stage for a more cinematic and story focused direction. Honestly seeing Metroid get this kind of lavish production is exciting as hell and if Dread is any indication of the future of the series we’re not going to stop seeing games where Samus is properly isolated.

@luciobar1980 Nail on the head. People forget so easily that Prime itself was ripped to shreds when it was first talked about by people decrying the idea of a Metroid FPS made in Texas.

Re: UK Charts: Kirby Air Riders Narrowly Misses Out On A Top Ten Spot

larryisaman

@Axecon It’s a sequel to a niche GameCube game starring a character who isn’t nearly as popular as Mario or Sonic over here, both of whom have just had kart games released over the last few months. It’s really not a shock that it’s not selling huge numbers.

I’m a big fan of Kirby and even I’m not rushing out to get it. I know it’s a very different game to Mario Kart but with World I’m good for mascot racers for a while and I imagine most people are the same.

Re: Nintendo Debuts Two Metroid Prime 4 Ads As Eight-Year Wait Nears Its End

larryisaman

Can’t wait for it and nothing I’ve seen so far has dampened my hype. More NPCs etc. isn’t really that surprising when they already headed in that direction with Prime 3. Didn’t bother me then and it doesn’t bother me here. Even Miles’ dialogue isn’t offensive to me; seems well acted and I’ve seen much worse writing.

Obviously I hope there’ll still be plenty of moments where you are left to your own devices but from everything I’ve seen that appears to be the case. Ultimately I don’t really mind if the 2D entries going forwards are the ones that stay truest to the formula while the 3D games experiment.

Re: The Game Awards Nominees Announced, Donkey Kong Bananza Up For GOTY

larryisaman

I loved Clair Obscur but I think it’s got to be Bananza for me. Haven’t finished Silksong yet and though I’ve adored it up until now the difficulty really is getting in the way of my enjoyment to be honest. Just feels much less balanced than the original to me. Still up there with the best games I’ve played this year and I will beat it eventually but it’s tiring hitting your head against the wall with the same boss or area over and over when I have such limited time to play games nowadays.

I have a feeling Prime 4 will knock DK off my top spot though (I know it’s not in the running for the Game Awards due to its late release but whatever).

Re: Official Zelda Movie Photos Give Us Our Best Look Yet At Link And Zelda

larryisaman

@Elektrogeist1287 I honestly don’t think there’s a way to do it without it looking like those kinds of skits and that’s just yet another reason it should have been animated. They look as good as you could hope for but the issue is even at its most realistic (Twilight Princess) Zelda has always been rooted in a more cartoony style so it’s always going to look off in live action.

Re: Reggie Is "Surprised" We Haven't Seen More Xbox Titles On Switch 2

larryisaman

Given that Fallout 4 Anniversary was just announced but coming later than other versions plus Indiana Jones confirmed for next year I’d assume more things are happening but they’re just taking longer for whatever reason. It’s also no surprise that bigger games wouldn’t get announced yet as Nintendo like to show them in Directs- something like Halo would be one such game.

I think next year will be when the floodgates start to open for Xbox games. Won’t be shocked to see the Halo remake, HiFi Rush and the new Doom get announced and released next year.

Re: Pikmin 4's Free Content Update Is Out Now, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

larryisaman

@jamesRainbowBoy Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is Unreal 4 and that got a 60FPS/resolution patch for Switch 2 🤷‍♂️

Plus there’s Misc: A Tiny Tale that was made with UE4 and that got a performance boost by using a dynamic resolution and uncapping the frame rate. Not that all games are made equal, maybe it could be down to the engine but I would imagine they could improve the performance if they wanted to.

Re: Poll: Is The Latest Metroid Prime 4 Trailer Teasing Another Legacy Character?

larryisaman

Considering Sylux is supposedly an integral part of the story it wouldn’t shock me if other characters from Hunters make an appearance. It’s always struck as me as so bizarre that they would focus on Sylux as important to anything anyway, right from the teaser in Prime 3 to everything we’ve seen of Beyond. Nothing of Hunters seemed important to any of the wider Prime lore so it’s baffling they’d choose to bring that into the new game- not that I mind, I think it’s cool but still.

To that end though I do think they’d have done well to separate this from Prime in general. Same gameplay etc. but make it its own thing- maybe just Prime Beyond as its own subset of games rather than Prime 4. I fear that people will see the 4 and won’t buy it because they don’t have easy access to the rest of the trilogy even though knowledge of the old games likely won’t matter in the long run.

Re: Talking Point: Smashing Switch 2 Numbers Prove Nintendo's Strategy Is Super Effective

larryisaman

Comes as no surprise to me that it’s doing well. Nintendo have done most things right so far. The main thing they can really be criticized for is the pricing and even then it’s mostly in line with what everybody else is doing (besides Mario Kart World’s standalone price) and the price of the system itself is pretty fair all considered.

@Fiskern Same here. I knew 1 person who got a Switch within the first year of release- I know 5 people who got a Switch 2 at launch (and these are all people I’ve known for decades).

Re: Talking Point: When Did 'Good Enough' Become Good Enough For Pokémon?

larryisaman

X&Y. They’ve clearly always been ambitious and remain so but once they made the jump into full 3D things went south. It was obviously easier for them to make mostly sprite based games quickly while maintaining a high level of quality but they haven’t been able to match that moving to more powerful hardware.

There really should have been a big shift in how things get made as they moved to Switch- more outsourcing of projects (especially remakes) so GF can focus on less games should have been the priority. Even when they did that with ILCA and BDSP though it seems they gave them a small budget and not a lot of time to do it so does it even matter? Especially when GF were still spread thin across several projects in house. Ultimately they clearly just don’t care because the games are wildly successful regardless of quality, but that’s just weirdly at odds with how they ambitious they still are with the series.

Re: "Go Tell Nintendo" - Ex-Blizzard President Responds After Xbox Calls Exclusives "Antiquated"

larryisaman

@TOMAWOLF Not necessarily. Having several platforms on the market keeps things competitive and keeps hardware manufacturers from becoming complacent or engaging in anti-consumer practices because they can get away with it (Xbox One always online/digital licenses were ditched because of Sony’s approach for example). The main thing that drives people to different platforms is exclusives and without them it’s harder to flourish as we’ve seen with Xbox over the past decade or so.

On the face of it yeah, exclusives aren’t great for consumers as you have to buy multiple systems but then again it keeps platform holders putting their best foot forwards as they need their hardware to sell. I think we’d see a very different Nintendo for example if they were purely focused on software and not for the better.

Re: Surprise! Pikmin 4 Is Getting A Free Content Update On Switch Next Month

larryisaman

I never finished this despite being a huge Pikmin fan…it just didn’t hit like the original trilogy of games, not sure why. I’d go back to it if it gets an FPS/resolution update for Switch 2, hopefully that’s something they’ll announce closer to this update releasing. Bizarre that they’d work on new content for it and not work on updating it for Switch 2 🤷‍♂️
