Presuming that this was a contract already made before the Nintendo acquisition considering they bought them “to focus on development of visual content utilising Nintendo IP“
Not that there’s anything stopping them being used elsewhere anyway but I’d assume that things from them will be more Nintendo-centric going forwards
@Cakefish It’s always annoyed me when people say Nintendo struggle in the UK. Yes their home consoles have typically been far less popular than other consoles here but their handhelds have always been a different story. The DS for example was the best selling console in the UK of any kind.
With the Switch being predominately a handheld it’s no shock that it did so well and that Switch 2 is starting off great here too.
Had no issues with the hardware other than the right joycon creaking when attached to the console. I know they’re designed to move a little bit when they’re attached but the creakiness is off putting
@Real_Obsi Yes, I would feel the same if Rockstar did this. It sucks when any company does it in any entertainment industry and they deserve to be called out for it whenever it happens.
@FeRDNYC Grant (or any other artist with a similar issue) wouldn’t have a leg to stand on and they all know it. They got paid for their work and got credited in the project they made it for and that’s what the contracts will have stated. Nintendo are within their rights to not credit them in the future and that’s unanimously understood; I doubt there’s any fear of legal repercussions whatsoever.
The issue is just a question of courtesy. If you’re going to credit whoever remixed a tune that somebody made years ago then why not just credit the original writer too? Especially if it’s not even remixed and just used as is (which I think was the case when they used the DK Rap in the movie). It’s a tiny token of appreciation that would be so easy to include, to actively go out of their way to not do it just sucks.
Ultimately credits are the only thing that shows that there were people who came together to make something and it wasn’t just created from a void. They might not matter to most people but it matters to those who were involved. I know for a fact if I made anything that made such a lasting impression that it continued to be used to this day (for better or worse in the case of the DK Rap…) I’d love to see my name still attached to it. I think most people who take a second to put themselves in an artist’s shoes would think the same.
@Dr_Lugae Oh my god. This literally has nothing to do with Grant being able to use the music or even being paid for it. It’s just asking for a tip of the cap to the person that made it instead of it just being listed as “music that Nintendo made”
@rjejr You don’t need a camera, no. Nobody I know has one. It’s just a very quick and easy way to invite people to chat, you don’t need a headset or anything because it uses the built in mic (even when docked and you’re sat far away from it it still works surprisingly well) and you can share a stream of what you’re playing if you want to.
I don’t need any of those Gamechat features for playing with randoms but at least let us use the mic to chat online with anyone. It’s not like they haven’t done it before with MK, you can use the Switch Online app and voice chat with random people in MK8D right now (if you can find anybody using it 🥴)
@Ogbert Bad example then, but either way I honestly don’t care about why credits exist either for legality or whatever. Ultimately it comes down to courtesy and respect for the people that put their talents into making something beloved.
Honestly, it would cost them nothing at all to nod their cap to the work somebody did even if it was decades ago. Of course they have the right to say “we don’t have to credit you so we don’t” but why? Seriously, why. It’d clearly mean a lot to the original composers and you’d hope Nintendo would want to honour the people that made something so memorable that they continue to use it decades later yet they really don’t care. Like they actively go out of their way not to when it would be so easy for them to just do it.
It’s the biggest surprise of the console for me considering that I wrote it off completely as something I wouldn’t care about. It’s so seamless and works great even when docked, been using it a ton with family and friends.
I just hope it’ll extend to random match ups in games in the future. To market voice chat as a big new feature only to not use it extensively in Mario Kart World is shocking.
@Dr_Lugae Ray Parker Jr. got his credit for the Ghostbusters theme in the first film, does that mean he shouldn’t get a credit any time that song is used in other films/media?
I don’t understand how people are content to let art just default to the company that owns it. Yes he was credited in DK64 but they used it in the movie and they’re using it again in the new game- he still did the work that made the song happen in the first place so give him his due and put a name to the artist instead of some nebulous “based on past work by Nintendo” crap.
I bought Cyberpunk like many others seem to have. The whole game being on the cartridge was definitely a factor but it’s also just the most interesting game of the lot outside of Mario Kart.
The biggest issue with the launch lineup is that if you’re interested in most of those games then you more than likely already own a system that can play them and for way cheaper.
Shouldn’t have considering I put a screen protector on it as soon as I took it out the box. It’s a £400 device, if you didn’t bother to spend the extra £6 for a screen protector and it’s damaged that’s on you
It’s nice to jump into every now and then when you want something more chilled. I would have liked it to have been more like Burnout Paradise with tons of time trials and races etc. to trigger across the world but whatever. My main issue is the fact that the map is trash. You move through it all so quickly that it’s hard to get your bearings; I really don’t know where I’ve explored or to what extent.
Hoping it gets updated to be more detailed and to show the locations of P Switches- I want to clear them all but I’m not going to drive around aimlessly to track them down and I’m not pratting about with online guides either.
I’m so happy Nintendo have handled backwards compatibility in the way they have. Would have been the most Nintendo move ever to force it to run games just as they did on Switch.
What is typical of Nintendo though is they have all of these examples of games that are massively improved without even needing patches and there’s no mention of it in their marketing at all. Nobody even knew what to really expect when playing vanilla Switch games on Switch 2 until it released. Would have been such an easy win to put out a montage of side by sides of games running on both platforms.
9/10. Looks amazing, Knock Out Tour is very addictive. Tons to unlock. Phenomenal soundtrack. Free roam is a nice distraction when you want some down time between races and some of the missions offer some nice challenge. The new additions to gameplay are great and add a ton of depth- easily the best feeling Mario Kart yet.
Not perfect though. I want voice chat with random players (they did it on MK8D so I don’t want to hear that they’d never allow it). Free roam map needs to show the locations of P Switches, or at least the ones you’ve found and tell you how many are left to find in a specific area.
Overall though it’s a very good game as it is but I’m sure this is only the start. Betting this is a platform they will add to every year; I can imagine by the end of the Switch 2’s life it will have evolved into a mammoth of a game with both paid and (hopefully) free updates.
Put a few hours into it in both handheld and docked and it looks fantastic in both. The fact they’ve got a game like this running as well as it does on day one is amazing, bodes well for the future of the console if it’s already handling games like this at launch
@Matl The chaos is still there believe me. Knockout Tour is mayhem at its peak- not only are you trying to win but you’re trying to stay in the race at multiple points which ratchets up the intensity not just at the final hurdle but throughout the race.
Knockout Tour is the star of the show by far. I love it, gets intense and it’s really cool to traverse across areas of the map and see everything transform seamlessly.
Free roam is really nice for a bit of chill down time between online races and the missions are fun but I’m desperate for any kind of indication as to where the P Switches are across the map. I don’t need exact locations but at least tell me how many there are to be found in each location so I can hunt for them. At the minute the world is so big and I don’t know how anything connects so I really don’t have a clue where I’ve found missions and where I haven’t without just randomly driving around. Also sucks that they’re pushing Game Chat as a big new feature yet Mario Kart doesn’t have any voice chat with random people despite it being an option in the last game.
Overall though really enjoying it, just needs a few simple additions to make it properly shine.
I was all in on this until I discovered there’s no online beyond the Game Share mode. That’s a death knell for a racing game for me unfortunately. If they patch it in then I’ll be there for it, though depending on how long that takes (if it’s happening at all) I’m not sure the player base will be there. The time for it is now when it’s slim pickings for Switch 2 exclusives.
No issue with mine whatsoever and I have an OLED. Mario Kart in particular looks absolutely stunning. My only issue with the screen isn’t a fault with the display itself but Switch 1 games that target a lower resolution than 720p can look particularly rough on it. Just an unfortunate side effect of having a bigger and higher res screen…hopefully there’ll be plenty of patches pushed out to help said games sooner rather than later.
Would OLED have been nice? Of course. But if it’s true that it costs $400 to produce each console and Nintendo are making minimal profit or even a loss on each unit sold then an OLED panel would have only increased the price and it’s expensive enough as it is.
@Duncanballs I honestly can’t wait to see what Nintendo devs are going to come up with when developing for it from the ground up. Especially Next Level and Monolith…those devs getting a generational leap in graphics after being stuck with hardware at or around Wii U level over the last 13 years is going to be huge
Once again, I reiterate in a post like this that while Nintendo consoles have notoriously struggled to get a foothold in the UK (aside from the Wii), their handhelds have always been very popular here.
Case in point, the best selling system of all time in the UK was the DS. With Switch being predominantly a handheld it makes sense that it did well over here and so it’s no shock that Switch 2 is off to a great start too.
Also comparing the launch to that of PS5/Xbox Series was always going to be unfavorable to Nintendo considering those launched at the height of the pandemic and people were buying games/consoles en mass because there was nothing else to do.
@Ooccoo_Jr I think it’s definitely a blow for physical collectors but still, it is better than download codes which would have been the preferred option for third parties if Nintendo never budged on offering only 64GB cards for proper physical options.
To be honest it’s not too surprising that Nintendo have taken this route considering they’re not the first. There have been games since the PS4 that come with little more than a digital license on the disc and require you to download the whole thing. Not to say Nintendo are in the right for going down this route but they’re catching a lot of flack for something that Sony and Microsoft have allowed for years and didn’t get much public outcry for at all.
Very happy with it overall, exactly what I wanted. Very pleasantly surprised by GameChat too, it works great and I’m using i it way more than I thought I would (no chat with strangers in Mario Kart is bunk though).
@slowpoke_tail Same here. I don’t mind having the same general UI since it was well designed in the first place but they could have done a lot more to make it feel new on that front.
@KoopaTheGamer True. But you’d think even games like the Persona 4 remake would have been a shoe-in. I still expect games like that will make it over but not getting announced alongside everything else sucks. Hopefully Nintendo are just keeping third parties quiet so they can announce them in Directs etc.!
Seeing a disturbing amount of games being announced with no Switch 2 mention in sight…
I know that Switch ports of bigger AAA games were usually the exception and not the rule but I was hoping to see more games target Switch 2 at least early on.
@mariomaster96 I had a scare when I turned mine on this morning when I saw it was at 23% after putting into sleep last night at around 85%. Then saw the notification that it finished downloading 25 games plus updates so I guess that really throttled it.
I really don’t care how “new” it is overall. It’s a Switch that’s way more capable and gives a new lease of life to the back catalogue both with specific upgrades and just by ironing things out automatically. Exactly what I’ve wanted for years and worth the price to upgrade personally.
Fascinating how in depth Nintendo are being when it comes to the tech of Switch 2. Behind the scenes stuff in this game, driving home the resolution/frame rate boosts for Switch 1 games at any opportunity and even having the Nvidia CEO talking about the chip sets on official Nintendo channels…it’s been a long time since Nintendo have prioritized tech like this. I guess when the new console is so iterative it makes sense to lean into what’s new on a hardware level but still, strange to see.
I was against paying for this when they said it was a paid download but whatever, it’s £8. If anything I just want a really good demo for the HD rumble since to this day I haven’t played anything that really wowed me. Everybody says the ball game in 1 2 Switch was the best use of the tech but there was no chance I was buying that just to try that mini game. At least this looks like there’s a nice amount of stuff in it.
I’ll give this another go thanks to this update. I’m not bothered that it doesn’t look nicer; of course I would like it to but the actual visuals were never my real issue (at times it can look fairly nice). It was always the awful frame rate that took me out of it, the slide shows of Pokémon and characters in the distance and just the general sluggishness of moving around.
Sucks that it took a whole new console release to fix it but better than nothing at all, and at least it’s free.
Nintendo’s biggest selling point is you can only play their games on their hardware (save for mobile games of course but they aren’t the “real deal”). Wouldn’t make any sense at all to start putting them elsewhere, especially when they’ve been so successful as of late.
“It'll be interesting to see if Metroid Prime 4: Beyond follows suit when it launches on both consoles later this year.“
Would definitely hope so for its sake. Metroid has never been and likely never will be a major seller so they’d do well to price it so it’s as accessible as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the most expensive game Nintendo have ever produced (as far as just development costs go) so they could probably justify a higher cost but I don’t think that would do the game any good.
I am looking forward to Replaylee since it will hopefully turn the first game into what it should have been all along but still, I think the choice to remaster a game that isn’t that old/inaccessible and wasn’t a huge critical success to begin with is odd. I guess their next game (Yooka Laylee 2 hopefully) is proving to be bigger than they expected and need the extra cash so I guess putting together a remaster would help but even still I’m not sure what the sales potential for that would really be all things considered.
Really hope things get turned around for them; Impossible Lair is probably my favourite platformer of the Switch generation. Would be like the second death of Rare if they go under.
@SpacedDuck Yes, but it depends on what the game was designed to run at originally. Doom Eternal should run at a more consistent (if not locked) 30fps with the dynamic resolution staying higher more often (again, hopefully should cap out at its highest and stay there) but since the frame rate was capped at 30 and the resolution maxed out at 720p in docked it won’t get higher than those without a specific patch being made.
Maybe Nintendo should take the hint if the sharing of news and media from the app onto other platforms is so prevalent. I’m really not interested in downloading an extra app and taking up more space on my phone for things they could just post onto Twitter or Facebook or whatever, especially when those exclusive “first looks” have been things like what noises the Switch 2 menu makes when you click on icons.
It’s also just absolutely stupid when Nintendo’s goal is to reach as many people as possible with their marketing. You go to the people to try and sell them things, you don’t wait for them to come to you.
8/13…not bad considering I haven’t played it since it released. I absolutely loved it when I played it and I think at the time I would have said it was the best 3D Mario, but it’s been so long since I’ve played it now that I don’t know where I would rank it. Really deserves to be re-released.
So many easy responses he could have gone with that would have been received so much better. “Unfortunately the game industry isn’t immune to costs going up just like everything else so sadly it has to be more expensive, but I promise it will be worth the higher price.” Done.
His actual response just felt totally dismissive and ignorant. I get that we’re talking about luxuries here so there’s only so mad you can get as far as price increases go but still.

Re: Game Freak's Upcoming Action RPG Looks Awesome, But Don't Expect It On Switch 2 Yet
Seeing a disturbing amount of games being announced with no Switch 2 mention in sight…
I know that Switch ports of bigger AAA games were usually the exception and not the rule but I was hoping to see more games target Switch 2 at least early on.
Re: YouTube Is Working With Nintendo To Make Its App Available On Switch 2
@Denoloco Spotify as well. It’s really nice on Xbox/PS5 to have your own playlists for certain games
Re: Poll: Switch 2 Battery Reportedly Lasting Under Two Hours With Mario Kart - How Is Yours Holding Up?
@mariomaster96 I had a scare when I turned mine on this morning when I saw it was at 23% after putting into sleep last night at around 85%. Then saw the notification that it finished downloading 25 games plus updates so I guess that really throttled it.
Re: Hardware Review (In Progress): Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch
I really don’t care how “new” it is overall. It’s a Switch that’s way more capable and gives a new lease of life to the back catalogue both with specific upgrades and just by ironing things out automatically. Exactly what I’ve wanted for years and worth the price to upgrade personally.
Re: Video: "It's Actually...Really Good" - Our Hot 'Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Preview Take
Fascinating how in depth Nintendo are being when it comes to the tech of Switch 2.
Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour Trailer Highlights New Minigames & Tech Demos
Re: Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Footage Shows 60fps Gameplay For Switch 2
I’ll give this another go thanks to this update. I’m not bothered that it doesn’t look nicer; of course I would like it to but the actual visuals were never my real issue (at times it can look fairly nice). It was always the awful frame rate that took me out of it, the slide shows of Pokémon and characters in the distance and just the general sluggishness of moving around.
Sucks that it took a whole new console release to fix it but better than nothing at all, and at least it’s free.
Re: Random: Xenoblade Chronicles X Pops Up On Microsoft PC Game Page
Nintendo’s biggest selling point is you can only play their games on their hardware (save for mobile games of course but they aren’t the “real deal”). Wouldn’t make any sense at all to start putting them elsewhere, especially when they’ve been so successful as of late.
Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Switch 2 And Switch 1 Prices Have Been Revealed
“It'll be interesting to see if Metroid Prime 4: Beyond follows suit when it launches on both consoles later this year.“
Would definitely hope so for its sake. Metroid has never been and likely never will be a major seller so they’d do well to price it so it’s as accessible as possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the most expensive game Nintendo have ever produced (as far as just development costs go) so they could probably justify a higher cost but I don’t think that would do the game any good.
Re: Yooka-Laylee Dev Playtonic Is The Latest Studio Hit By Layoffs
Re: Nintendo Updates Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility List
@SpacedDuck Yes, but it depends on what the game was designed to run at originally. Doom Eternal should run at a more consistent (if not locked) 30fps with the dynamic resolution staying higher more often (again, hopefully should cap out at its highest and stay there) but since the frame rate was capped at 30 and the resolution maxed out at 720p in docked it won’t get higher than those without a specific patch being made.
Re: Nintendo Today! Update Prevents Users From Recording Promotional Videos
Re: How Well Do You Remember Super Mario Galaxy 2?
8/13…not bad considering I haven’t played it since it released. I absolutely loved it when I played it and I think at the time I would have said it was the best 3D Mario, but it’s been so long since I’ve played it now that I don’t know where I would rank it. Really deserves to be re-released.
Re: Feature: "Game-Key Cards Don't Sit Right With Us" - Lost In Cult Dives Into Its New Physical Games Line
It’s sad that I’ve already come to accept that having key cards is better than not having anything physical at all.
Re: Randy Pitchford Defends Borderlands 4 Pricing Comment
So many easy responses he could have gone with that would have been received so much better. “Unfortunately the game industry isn’t immune to costs going up just like everything else so sadly it has to be more expensive, but I promise it will be worth the higher price.” Done.
His actual response just felt totally dismissive and ignorant. I get that we’re talking about luxuries here so there’s only so mad you can get as far as price increases go but still.
