Re: The English Translation of Super Mario RPG Cut Many Japanese Pop References

edhe

@turntSNACO
There's no specific example - it's a amalgamation of behaviour I have witnessed over the past 5 years or so.

But I disagree with the premise of the comment I responded to - If I object to censorship, it isn't because I want to 'perv over underage characters'. I responded to an strawman argument with my own.

Now, in the case of Super Mario RPG, this would not be censorship, technically, more localization, as correctly pointed out. It gets a bit muddy when people would argue that our current western values should dictate how characters should appear in games, and call that "localization", but when you start imposing these values on Japan as well (see Sony's current efforts to sanitise all Ecchi from their platform), that argument doesn't hold up.

Going back to Super Mario RPG, of course I understand these references were altered - they were taken from shows that were largely unknown to most Western players, but even if they had watched the dubbed anime, the references might not have been as apparent.

Re: Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet Won’t Be Released In Europe Or North America

edhe

The game was going to be censored - at least for the Playstation release (I think the director/producer kept flip flopping on the issue), but it looks like they'll just be avoiding the Western release and the hysterical kotaku op-eds.

I daresay, it would have been denied classification on the UK and certainly Australia anyway.

I'd recommend anyone who's desperate to play this and similar games to consider import sites.

Re: So Long Wii Shop Channel, And Thanks For All The Games

edhe

@holygeez03

When I got my Wii console originally, it had Super Mario 64 and Bomberman '93 on it. A Wii with loads of Virtual Console games on it could be valuable, but when it comes to WiiWare, the storage capacity is a limiting factor. I've transferred everything over to my WiiU, but you can't utilise the WiiU's higher capacity, so I have to rely on an SD card.

Re: Blaster Master And Zelda II Arrive On The Switch Online NES Service This Month

edhe

Personally, I don’t think there’s a NES game they could release that I’d be interested in playing. Not one that I couldn’t already play on my WiiVC. I had always wanted to try Ninja Gaiden again, but watching my brother try and pass that sword throwing Druid on the second stage (and get knocked off every time) reminded me why I didn’t enjoy that particular game in the first place. I might be interested if they released Parodius, or maybe Probotector but NES never really aged well for me.

As for Blaster Master & Zelda II, I already own them on the Virtual Console & 3DS (via ambassador) respectively. Blaster Master is alright, but Zelda II is just frustrating. I prefer games that are a bit more user friendly - ones that give you a better idea on what you are supposed to be doing, and that’s why I’d be more interested if they were to start releasing games from the SNES and onwards.

Re: Feature: The History Of The Civilization Series

edhe

I've played many Civ games in my time. At one point, I owned the complete collection containing I-IV, but I'm not sure I was able to play the first two. IV was fun, but it was a bit frustrating when you're faced with a ludicrous stack of enemies, and not enough units to beat them with. If I'm not mistaken, (it's like this in III at least), your units fought to the death as well, rather than inflict and sustain fixed amounts of damage. Sometimes, this would lead to situations where an archer could theoretically beat a tank.

Something not mentioned in the article, and a game I'm quite keen on, is the DOS spin off Colonization. I haven't managed to finish a full game, but it plays differently from the main series. There are less "civilizations", and (on standard settings) you are playing on a map that doesn't have the mystery of a randomly generated or otherwise fictional map, but it's a pretty fun game in its own right.

@gcunit
French, actually.

I would have thought it they'd have spelled it with a Z regardless, considering it's a trademark.

Re: Review: Valkyria Chronicles - SEGA's Strategy Classic Still Shines Ten Years Later

edhe

On one hand, with scouts being overpowered (one character in particular being especially broken), they aren't always the win option when a tank or gatling is sitting on a camp, and interception fire can be pretty deadly, unless you ultilse defence "orders" (something the review didn't mention - orders are essentially buffs you can bestow on your units at the cost of Command Points (CP)).

Then again, I've heard people say the game almost encourages you to rush through maps when the higher ranks (and thus, greater EXP/ducat rewards) neccesitate beating a map with a low turn count.

Re: Konami Confirms There Are "Absolutely No Plans" To Bring Castlevania Requiem To Other Systems

edhe

I read the subheader, and thought it might be a similar case to Final Fantasy on steam/mobile, but nope. Just a better translation/localization, and not something I'd consider consolation for it not appearing on the Switch.

It's a great game, and I'm glad I got to play it, despite being a Nintendo loyalist since the NES. I played it on a cheap PS3 - you really don't need to go out and buy a PS4 to experience this game, and I'd recommend you do if you've got access to a PS3, like I do.

Re: Mighty No. 9 Developer Comcept Remains Tight-Lipped About Handheld Releases

edhe

The developers didn’t even offer me a complimentary steam code. It’s the least they can do for me and those who backed the game.

Compare this to Shantae, which sent me the base game on the WiiU (as promised), a steam version (because the wiiu version was a little late), and an ultimate edition, for steam as a thank you to all backers.

Keiji Inafune is a spiv, and I was a fool to trust him.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Confirms He's Working On Super Smash Bros. Switch

edhe

At the very least, it won't be gimped because they have to get it to run on a 3DS. I haven't played Smash Bros on either the 3DS or the WiiU, but I wonder what they can really do to improve it.

If they polish it up to look as pretty as possible, additional characters, stages and even gamemodes and features can be introduced via DLC for years to come.

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

edhe

Because I was planning to buy a Switch and games last year, I opted to pay for an elite subscription at GAME, and I've got much more back than I would have if I had to rely on Nintendo's reward scheme.

I understand Nintendo aren't obliged to give us anything, and I could give and take any tiny discounts on switch software, but I would rather see some tangible rewards like in the old days. Personally, I used to spend all my stars on Wii Points Cards, yet they seemed much more generous than what's on offer now.

The most miserly thing about it all is the expiration on every star you accrue. I'll probably buy something (if Nintendo will allow me) with the ÂŁ1.24 I've currently got, but I won't be choosing the download options for games to then get a few pennies for another download.

Physical is consistently cheaper anyway.

Re: The Internet Is Pouring Some Serious Salt On That PC Port Of Chrono Trigger

edhe

My virgin eyes! Thanks for editing out that profane tweet.

As for the port, S-E have done this with their other games. It's the cheapest, easiest method.

What's more, I wouldn't be surprised if it required you to register with the square-enix site each time you want to play it like with Final Fantasy 7 and 8 on steam, although I could be wrong.

Re: Fire Emblem Heroes Has Passed Five Million Installs on Android

edhe

I was a bit confused when you said a quarter of a billion dollars in revenue because I misread it as a quarter of a million, and that seemed underwhelming.

But a quarter of a billion is head and shoulders above what Miitomo was earning for Nintendo. I don't think Fire Emblem Heroes is going to be shut down any time soon.

Re: Reminder: Time To Purchase Wii Shop Points Is Running Out

edhe

I had 700 points left, and there was nothing I was really keen on for only 700, so I bought "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord" and Mario Tennis, and spend the remainder on a few addons for FFCC:MLaaDL.

I won't be able to see all FFCC:MLaaDL, because the addons are too expensive for my liking. They don't seem to be that substantial though - just items, rooms or monsters that make it a little easier.

Previously, I had splashed cash on all of the addons for the sister game "My Life as a King", but I can't remember what that totalled.

Re: News: Fire Emblem Heroes' First Anniversary Update Detailed by Nintendo

edhe

50 orbs doesn't neccesarily get you 10 summons.

When you go to summon, you are presented with 5 hidden choices. The first one costs 5 orbs, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ones cost 4 orbs, and the 5th one costs 3 orbs. 50 orbs can potentially get you 12 summons with one orb remaining.
The daily maps add 25 maps with 2 orbs each over both difficulty levels, that's another 50 orbs.
However, when you summon from a banner for the first time, you get the first summon free, and a full round would only cost 15 orbs, but only once.

With this in mind, and with a Mini tempest ongoing (anouther 42 orbs) and having a warchest of over 200 orbs, I may finally spend some of them. If only I had the space - my barracks are full of Berukas, Oboros and Arthurs that I'm intending to fully 5* merge. I've already done it with Cecilia, and she's one of my most valuable units.

@thesilverbrick The difference between Miitomo and Fire Emblem Heroes is that Fire Emblem Heroes is profitable. I have this in the back of my mind though, so I'm apprehensive about spending real world money on games like this.
