Lara Croft’s latest game trilogy has revitalised her career. There’s even been a new movie released earlier this year following her recent success.
Speaking to GameSpot, Eidos Montreal lead game designer Heath Smith said despite Lara's surge in popularity she wouldn’t be making the switch anytime soon, as there were currently “no plans” for a Nintendo version of the game.
Smith said he was a big fan of Nintendo’s hybrid system, but felt the latest game in the trilogy series - Shadow of the Tomb Raider - was not suited to the platform. For now, this essentially stamps out any hopes of the series being ported across to the Switch.
The last time Lara was sighted on a Nintendo system was during the Wii generation in Tomb Raider: Underworld and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Before then, Tomb Raider: Legend was released on the DS and GameCube, and prior to this, she starred in a number of outings on the Game Boy systems.
Tomb Raider previously skipped the Wii U. At the time, Crystal Dynamics' creative director Noah Hughes explained how a Nintendo version of the first game in the new series would require more effort than a basic port:
I’m always a fan of the Nintendo systems, in particular they really push interface design, and from a game design perspective it’s fun to play with new interfaces. Having said that it’s something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it.
Even though it won’t be happening any time soon, would you like to see Lara Croft make a return to Nintendo platforms? Have you ever played this series? Tell us below.

I dont see what cant be suited to Switch
I don't know about the new one, but Rise of the Tomb Raider was pretty nice. I don't see how any of the games couldn't be ported to the Switch.
Wolfy 2 and Both Dooms say "hi"...
It's not so much that these games are graphically demanding, it's more that the engine they're running on is not optimized well at all. If they tried porting these to the switch, I'd expect to see a lot of people claiming they got third degree burns while playing in handheld mode....
They probably lazy and don't want to do it. Panic Buttton already proved that realistic games like Tomb Raider is possible. Anyways I didn't grew up with this series so it's not a misopportunity if I never knew it, I did saw a few of the film and did not enjoy any of them as they are as bad as the Resident Evil films.
Seems like a missed opportunity to me. These games are great and I think could find a nice audience on the Switch.
Side note: Are any of the Tomb Raider original PS games on any Nintendo system?
He's right,us Nintendo fans don't play games like this.We share Joy-con on rooftops and play games like 1-2 Switch for 5 minute intervals.Tomb Raider is too complex for us.
Ah well,I"ll get back to Octopath Traveller.
Meh, Doom Eternal says "hi", and Bethesda takes my money. Square Enix needs to find someone that can port games to the switch. looks at panic button Reality is that this eido montreal or whatever development team is incompetent at optimizing games, so I don't know why anyone bothered to ask the main team, and not SE themselves.
Oh, cool. Can’t wait to read more stories about games that won’t be released on the Switch.
@OorWullie Meanwhile anyone who has played Octopath Traveler knows how dark it can get. I'm not that far but Primrose's chapter 2... so good!
@TheSpeedyMouse I've yet to get to Primrose's 2nd Chapter but I must admit I was taken aback by how dark the first one was. Can't wait to see where it goes next.
They said this before and it basically means screw Nintendo, we have nothing.
Is it bad I thought Tomb Raider was a PlayStation exclusive?
I know next to nothing about the series, but my girlfriend loves it.
Can't wait for the next article that tells us "This game isn't coming to the switch!". Also can't wait for the comments that say " Have you tried talking to Panic Button?" "UMM Doom on low low graphics settings can run? Why can't this?"
On the bright side, now in 2 years this new TR trilogy can come to "New Switch" and they can market them all as "first time on Switch". 😆
its a shame would be nice to have portable,
I think there is a huge market on switch for new parents.
Switch is good enough to make gaming as a new parent possible to sneak in here and there so the hobby can live on in the limited time available to a new family dynamic.
Alas, probably will not get my money this time then.
Overall i think that the first game was better than the second in the new ones.
That’s too bad, but not surprised to hear about this. I will be getting the new Tomb Raider game when it is released on one of the other consoles though. I like the series very much.
Would it be possible if Tomb Raider was on the switch? Like the one that the movie adapted from, the one before Rise of the tomb raider.
Not surprised. This is what my PC/PS4 Are for (Not trading fidelity for portability). Just make Something else that does not need to be butchered to run on Switch - and all good.
Yeah, I’m tired of hearing the “we love the platform, but we have no plans to support it” line. Honestly, with Switch, this is probably the best chance that third parties have had, in some time, of finding real success on a Nintendo platform.
The first Tomb Raider reboot ran just fine on PS3 and X360. IIRC the only real upgrade when it got ported to current gen was Lara's hair.
Would love to see the games on the Switch. That said the first two of the trilogy are frequently in bargain bin territory on competing platforms so perhaps the ships sailed on that one a bit financials wise. I imagine it’s doable, but perhaps the audience isn’t there, at least for the first two.
Booooooo. Been hoping for a port of at least the first one.
@MsJubilee @SatoshiDK Yeah, this kind of articles is the main reason I visit this site!
Aw would like to see this happen
I rather not even see it on Switch at this point. Im quite frankly getting tired of so many games arriving late.
I fear sales would be relatively low because many of us would have already played it elsewhere. Not too low, but relatively low...
This only feeds the false notion that "Nintendo gamers are not hardcore enough," when in reality it just means we played the game already.
Just my opinion, anyway.
Remake the original trilogy and port that. I’m sure people would love to play those, with less triangles obviously
@Magrane in a way - mainlines didn't make it until Legend on GCN, but afterwards the remake of the first game (Anniversary) did come to Wii. Tomb Raider Underworld happened, too. As for spinoffs, they've happened since GameBoy Color (the console whose library, to be fair, is also still laughing at the "too underpowered to consider ports for" gamer buzz).
To the rest of the comments: guys, step on your inner fans' rotten throats for a moment and look up "lazy". A port needs additional HR, time and budget - how about a developer THEMSELVES dare estimate how to juggle all three and whether investing in a port is worth it for them? It may well be that they really prefer to port the game only if they think up how to make the Switch version stand out with Switch's stuff - and even the level of Nathan Drake's touchpad climbing on Vita may not be fancy enough for them. If/when TR is marked a good investment on the publisher side, it'll be up to Square Enix to either coax Eidos into a "simple" port or outsource the latter.
Until then, countering Eidos's aspirations with "laziness" is no privilege of a fandom tarpit known for reacting to "simple" ports with "boo, lower res, no 60 FPS, why can't they at least implement gyro aiming and HD Rumble to make up for it".
Nixxies software was able to get Rise of the Tomb Raider to run on the 360, so I'm sure with the right studio in mind they could get this to run on the Switch.
I remember back on the Wii when Infinity Ward said that it couldn't run the first Modern Warfare. This isn't me saying that they're being lazy but there is proof out there that with the right studio behind the project (such is Nixxie with Rise of the Tomb Raider for 360, Treyarch with the Call of Duty games on Wii and Panic Button with what they're doing on the Switch) that they could get this to run on Switch.
To be honest though, I just want to see a Director's cut of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on the Switch!
@retro_player_22 ah the stupid lazy developers comment back in full force. You know nothing about the developers work ethic but hey because they won't port tomb raider to switch they must be lazy at there job.
'Not suited to Switch' is just code for we can't be bothered, shame I'd buy it
Still, I'm amazed at big titles being released on the Switch anyway. Props to Panic Button.
It is what games we 'dont' get on a Nintendo console that make the difference.
I've finished the first game and played a bit of the second and they are not "open world" games, they are very pretty but I'm sure that scaling it down like Panic Button did with Doom and WF2, it is totally possible to port these games to the Switch.
I'd love to play them on the go as they are very good games but if I cannot, well, they won't see my money and if they do it will be by me owning a second hand game, so yes, no money for them either way.
Would love to see the tomb raider series on switch,but understand square hesitation since this game bin on development for more then two years.
Still expect we can maybe see a port later down the line
I’ll spend my $60 elsewhere shrugs
“There are no plans to release [AAA third party game] on [Nintendo system], but developer big fan of [Nintendo system].”
“Amazed these big games are being released on switch”
“Doom in low graphics mode”
I honestly don’t understand the logic of some people.
Xbox and Xbox 360 has some lovely looking complex games and the switch has had stuff far superior to those machines.
We know it isn’t a PS4 in your hand. However it has been proved you can have a gaming experience every bit as rich and deep and it just takes either a dev charged with porting or a dev making the game to have passion and a vision and understand what makes a game great.
I have Doom on PS4, Xbox and Switch and have been playing Doom since the original (yes I am old) and whilst compromises were made they understood what makes doom great and for me I had far more fun on the switch version than the PS4 version.
It just worked.
Tomb raider could easily work.
GTA V worked on Xbox 360 and was every bit as good as the Xbox 1 version and it’s still probably the best game of this generation even though it’s last gen.
If graphics are all you care about gaming isn’t your thing.
A game can look beautiful and have no depth.
That being said Doom looks great on the switch.
@mauhlin12 the second one also run fine on the 360, Digital Foundry did a tech analysis comparing the version against the XBONE one: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-tech-analysis
Edit, wrong link: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-face-off
So a version that would scale back the current gen features but at the same time improve on the last gen versions would definitely be possible for the first two entries of the rebooted trilogy. I have no idea about the third game though.
Core Design for life.
@gortsi Exactly. They could easily port the first two using the 360 code base, the Switch could handle those versions no problem. The third one is coming to the Xbox One S which isn’t vastly more powerful than a docked Switch, so I don’t see why without a few compromises a talented team like Panic Button couldn’t port that too.
Nintendo owners aren't missing out on anything because this reboot has been awful.
While I'd love to have them portable, I'd rather see Deus Ex on my Switch. Doesnt matter though, since as usual, Square has its head up its...
@BulkSlash releasing the first two on switch would be pointless now.
Also an Xbox one vanilla is still very much more powerful than the switch. Yeah I am sure they could get a running version on switch but it will still needs lots of compromises to be made. Panic button are mad busy as it is. They haven't got the resource to port every damn game.
@gortsi @BulkSlash @Stocksy
You’re focussing way too much on the technical side. The reality is if the publisher has no interest in finding a port what the devs want to do is irrelevant. And anybody would have a hard time convincing them that a port of the first two would sell.
It's technically too challenging and sacrifices would be made. Both this and Rise of the Tomb Raider feature realistic open worlds and run on its own engine. It's like Final Fantasy XV, not realistic but open and crazily detailed. You really can't compare this to Breath of the Wild (much more simplistic visually) or Wolfenstein II/Doom (closed environments and a massive reduction in resolution and level of detail on Switch).
The gameplay in these two games (and Tomb Raider 2013) is great but part of the magic is the visuals and I suppose that they don't want to ruin that without knowing if it would be worth it.
@edhe Because [Nintendo] is not a fan of [third-party developer] and makes things too difficult for them with totally unique and underpowered hardware. Seriously, they are probably fan of some Nintendo games like everyone is but I don't think that any developer is a fan of Switch technically.
@BulkSlash "The third one is coming to the Xbox One S which isn’t vastly more powerful than a docked Switch".
Switch capabilities are similar to 360 so how in earth can Switch be similar to Xbox One S? LOL
What other guys have said is true, that Rise of the Tomb Raider was developed for 360 too, that's a fact, so technically Rise of the Tomb Raider should be possible on Switch, but what you have said is crazy... And Shadow of the Tomb Raider is not Rise of the Tomb Raider anyway.
Surprise? I mean, come on, this is exactly the kind of game I would never expect to see on the Switch. Anyone who is honestly surprised by this needs to do more research on consoles before they buy them.
@BlueOcean It's not similar to the Xbox One S. It's also not similar to the 360, when just the RAM is 4GB vs the 360's 512MB. I thought crazy talk was last year, didn't know we still had these silly conversations.
@electrolite77 Of course, I was never expecting it anyway. Good games nonetheless.
@gortsi Yes , Switch has more RAM than Xbox 360 but its power is comparable to last-gen consoles, explained by Digital Foundry and other websites.
Switch is technically slightly more powerful than Xbox 360. Besides, the Tegra X1 is used in some mobile devices from years ago. You answered me but nobody seems to answer when someone says that Switch is similar to Xbox One S or PS4 which is ridiculous.
Take Wii U ports for example, they can make those run at slightly more resolution on Switch than on Wii U but same limitations elsewhere are found, like frame rate hiccups in Breath of the Wild in spite of taking two years just for porting the game to Switch, which means that with different (and mobile) architecture, Switch is slightly more powerful than Wii U, which is similar but slightly more capable than 360.
Therefore, Switch is slightly more powerful than Wii U which is slightly more powerful than Xbox 360. Switch can't be compared to any current-gen console, really.
Already got the new one preordered on Steam, and I loved the previous two. I'm sure they have good reason for no Switch port, but I won't miss it much.
@BulkSlash
The Xbox One is considerably more powerful than the Switch. See the beloved touchstone of Doom, which runs at 900p with a reasonably consistent 60fps on even a base Xbox One.
@JasmineDragon
“Anyone who is honestly surprised by this needs to do more research on consoles before they buy them.”
Spot on. Switch isn’t designed to chase games like this, it isn’t technically equipped and that’s a deliberate choice.
Last Tomb Raider I played called the Sega Saturn home... so I don't care. It's a shame that another developer is inadvertently shunning the switch, but oh well. Free market right?
@BlueOcean sometimes there is no need to compare architectures. For me one of the most important things about the Switch is its compatibility with some of the most popular game engines out there (Unreal, Unity, Game Maker) and specifically their latest versions. This is important in terms of releases because it allows developers to test the game without building a completely new engine for the console. EA can afford to do that but many others can't
@gortsi I understand what you mean, Switch is a unique hybrid console, I only said that because a person made that comparison with Xbox One S.
Switch can be great. For instance, Okami HD is probably best played on Switch portable mode, who would have thought it? That's why Switch is unique and in some cases it can be the best way to play certain games like Okami HD or Puyo Puyo Tetris.
I have friends that play Fortnite with me, some play on Switch and I play on Xbox One X. Obviously the game looks and performs much better on Xbox One X but I love how Nintendo is cooperating with Microsoft because Sony is a greedy unfriendly company at the moment.
We aren't really missing much honestly.
The new games are VERY basic platform adventures with a bit of Combat Light™(pat. pend.), a metric tonne of GRAFFIX®, and now feat. Hot Topic Virtue Signaling for backing vocals.
Maybe they assume the traditional Nintendo player can't appreciate it, and I'm inclined to share the sentiment. That said, I'd be stoked to see just how well it could be pulled off.
@OorWullie Is ridiculous right.
Meanwhile, id Software is debating whether Rage 2 could go to Switch...
It’s more that Doom was already built to scale, AND the novelty of having it portable; for portable it’s technically impressive.
But tomb raider may not be:
a) Designed for scaling; meaning the port would require rewriting or optimizing code; which is not always easy.
b.) Even optimized, it won’t be as impressive as doom.
c.) Is it even fun portable? Can it pick up and play?
d.) would people buy it when they can get it on thier pc or laptop?
Tomb Raider doesn't belong on Switch as it is a PC game, and PC games don't sell on Nintendo consoles. They do sell on Xbox and PlayStation as those are basically lobotomized PCs. Arcade games (or arcade-like games) sell best on Nintendo consoles, not PC games. Tomb Raider, essentially a puzzle adventure, is really a PC game.
Dissapointing to say the least. I love the Tomb Raider series and it was one I had quietly hoped would make its way over to the switch.

At this point, I just want third parties to cut the BS and give it to us straight. There's plenty of perfectly logical and reasonable explanations they could give for why the Switch isn't on the roadmap for their project, but instead it feels like they're lumping the whole lot with the crowd that barrages them with "BUT WHAT ABOUT SWITCH" when PC, PS4, and Xbox are the only platforms listed and then follows up with "PORT NOW REEEEE" when the obvious is stated.
@SwitchForce Tomb Raider can PERFECTLY scale. You can run it "decently" on quite old PC hardware (at least the previous 2 games, but those use the same engine) also the older games were on the previous generation of consoles. (XBOX 360 and PS3) So the Switch would be powerful enough to handle it.
However, I don't think they want to port it because the previous games weren't on the Switch. As it's a trilogy, having missed out on part 1 and 2 would be quite difficult to understand what's going on.
These games are tons of fun. It would be great is they could get around to it. However it would be a challenge, those game look great on PS4.
@ballistic90 4gb ram is l imiting. wrong move from nintendo
@Alucard83 the Switch uses 4 GB of DDR4 RAM, where 3.5 GB are available for games. The Xbox One by comparison uses 8 GB of older DDR3 RAM, but reserves much more for the OS. About 5.5 GB is available for games to use.
It's not quite a gulf as you might think.
Well, it certainly would require a lot of work. But after Doom/Eternal, Wolfenstein and the announced Ark i wouldn’t want to say it‘s impossible.
But even if it was indeed impossible - Ports of Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of ... would certainly be possible. Those games have Ports to X360 after all. I‘d really like to play that.
Shame... if 2013, Rise or Shadow ever got ported to Switch they’d be day one buys for me... here’s hoping for a nice surprise down the line.
@Pod Really? I find these games to have deep satisfying gameplay. Rise of the Tomb Raider has some epic optional tombs not to mention one of my favourite DLC in history. They really deserve the success they get.
I love rose of the tomb raider, and I understand why it’s hard to port ! But thank you for the fantastic job with octopath :3
@BlueOcean
You really are not that far off as Switch in battery mode is about as powerful as WiiU and similiarly aimed at 720p. Docked its just sped up enough to do that same things @ 1080p. One thing to remember is most x360 games only rendered @540p so hinestly I find it hard to believe Switch can’t run any last gen game, just some wouldn’t financially make sense.
Also even though the hardware power is not far above last gen, the ram size and system design are fully modern and this makes a big difference when considering porting. Some great ports were done on WiiU but it was a pain and then the games didn’t sell. WiiU ran AC4, DeusEX, ME3, SCBL, NFSMW all really well so if it could run those games I am sure Switch could run TR2013 if a capable team ported it.
Last point and that is you are wrong on Zelda, I have put in time on both WiiU and Switch and the post release optimizations were far greater on Switch. They improved the FPS performance almost everwhere but Kforest while WiiU still has regular drops to the low 20s everywhere.
@QuickSilver88 I know, but that's because they didn't care enough to fix the Wii U version while they did what they could to correct performance on Switch. Nintendo spent two years porting the game to Switch and the later updates on Switch were meaningful while the updates on Wii U were just to fix glitches and include DLC.
Assassin's Creed IV runs really poorly on Wii U, I couldn't play that version. Others run quite good like S&ASRT, NFSMW... I have no idea what SCBL is... We should stop using acronyms.
But yes, if TR 2013 and Rise of the TR run on 360 they should run on Switch as well. Not sure about Shadow of the TR, probably they are optimising this game for running on Xbox One S/X and PS4/Pro because there is no last-gen version.
Well that just effin sucks.
@BlueOcean
I'm being unreasonable, mostly because I never was a big fan of the old games, and I have felt like the new ones left out the few bits I actually enjoyed.
I don't mean to put down the great technical achievements and polished game play experience these new games provide, they're just not games for me.
@Pod I understand what you mean, that is why I appreciate the added optional bits in Rise of the Tomb Raider because they added interesting tombs and story bits. Apparently, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will have more of what fans really like and honestly I can't wait to play it.
@BlueOcean
I'll certainly be watching what they're doing with it.
The tombraider reboot was excellent on Xbox 360. The sequel on PS4 was just okay. The theory seemed to be "let's make the same game but make everything bigger" and it just didn't work that well. The story was also a let down after the reboot. As far as being on Switch, it'd be nice but it's not essential.
@sanderev , I highly doubt that those getting would miss much. And it might actually help boost their sales figure more to get more people into buying their games. Remember it said "won't be making the switch anytime soon". That never said they stop development into seeing if it works on the NSW. If this is their own omission then they already gone down that road and already have plans in the works. Otherwise why even mention or talk about it.
Games like this will never be a fit for Switch because the big vast world with huge vistas and amazing sights is kind of what most of the game is about. The tombs would all work fine, but the outdoor areas just wouldn't work well with Switch. And the gameplay is a kind of linear road trip through an impressive world to take in. But I find it interesting he mentioned a tailored experience for Switch. TR is a series that I think could tailor well to Switch, just not the 3 reboot games.
@BlueOcean @Pod Curious: What bits of it did you not like and like about the old ones, and what about RotTR did you dislike? And also what is Shadow doing that the other two didn't?
I only played one of the old games, I was never into them so much either. But it was kind of fun at times. I loved the 2013 reboot. I looked at the beginning of Rise and loved it as well so far, but won't be betting into it for some time.
This both makes me sad and angry. Tomb Raider: Anniversary was one of my favorite experiences on the Wii... an unsung but amazing game that slipped under many peoples' radar. I've been anxious for another Tomb Raider game on a Nintendo platform.
@NEStalgia
I'll be extra special frank here, I never played any of the games for more that a couple of hours at a friend's place. As I said, they're not exactly my cup of tea.
The new games are undeniably more pleasant to play than the clunky originals on PS1, but what I enjoyed was the campy action heroine motif and the bold colors and settings.
More than a style over substance situation, it felt like a substance through style thing. Kind of like what Cowboy Bebop achieves, maybe?
I feel these new games go out of their way to try and make a lot of over-the-top elements believable, like if Mario had to stop and massage and bandage his own feet and put on deodorant a couple times during a level. And we were made to understand that he's actually quite sad about Peach being kidnapped, and Luigi doesn't answer his texts.
HOWEVER, from what I've seen the new stories are still a lot more enaging than the bizarre cross-mythology daytime drama that developed over the years in the old continuum.
Apologies if my reply doesn't shed much light on anything useful to you.
What else could be expected, this company is owned by Square Enix.
@NEStalgia Tomb Raider 2013 was a quite focused adventure game that in my opinion didn't pay enough attention to the tombs and focused a bit too much in killing people. It's not a bad game but it could have been a much better Tomb Raider game.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is, in my opinion, one of the best games of the generation. Baba Yaga, part of the DLC, is also one of the best expansions I have ever played. Nintendo Life is perhaps not the best place to say this, but I believe that Rise of the Tomb Raider is much better than Breath of the Wild -and the different style and more cinematographic and linear Uncharted 4- as a game. The gameplay is refined, there's so much to do and nothing feels like a chore like in most open-world games, because the world is not really that huge to begin with and it's interesting and engaging to navigate. Crafting and collecting is also entertaining, upgrading weapons is rewarding but limited, shooting sections are reduced and improved and a great number of tombs are included, some of them are like classic mini Zelda dungeons. Not only this but there are so many ways to fight or escape enemies including human beings and animals. I think that what they did great with this game is balancing everything until it turned into a refined and satisfying game. Technically, the camera is smart and performance is good at least on Xbox One X. Even the sound is impressive. Sure, I could nitpick (Rhianna's writing, etc.) but it's almost perfect.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is supposed to give fans more of what they want so my bet would be darker and creepier tombs and more interesting story (not written by Rhianna but Jason Dozois and Jill Murray) but not much is known yet. I am very excited about it.
@NEStalgia "Games like this will never be a fit for Switch because the big vast world with huge vistas and amazing sights is kind of what most of the game is about. And the gameplay is a kind of linear road trip through an impressive world to take in".
That is not how I would ever describe Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's like if you have never played it. Uncharted 4 yes, it's flat gameplay in a cinematographic linear game with awesome views.
@Pod "I'll be extra special frank here, I never played any of the games for more that a couple of hours at a friend's place".
It's a bit long but worth reading so please check my reply to NEStalgia above.
@BlueOcean
Aight, that does sound pretty interesting. From what I played, the game hadn't really opened up yet, and I had feared it would remain the same kind kind og mostly linear exploration with basic puzzle solving as a couple of the games were 5-10 years back.
I just gotta swallow my slight disdain for the design of Lara they've been running with, I suppose.
@Pod So many Lara designs and actresses through the years! I like Camilla Luddington's voice and motion capture performance although she sounds a bit too posh and overacting sometimes. I am now curious, what you like or dislike about the design of Lara? Do you mean the facial model? I didn't like it very much in Rise of the Tomb Raider to be honest. She is more attractive and more "Lara" in Tomb Raider 2013. In Rise of the Tomb Raider she doesn't look younger but a totally different person.
@kobashi100 Yes they are otherwise they wouldn't come here and told us about not bringing it as evidence by past games that were able to and you defending their laziness ain't helping as you are just like them or are them.
@BlueOcean Personally I think of Tomb Raider (new) and Uncharted as cousins. They have more in common than they have different, however TR features that RPG progression system more or less that makes the gameplay and exploration much more three dimensional. Uncharted plays like a rails shooter where TR is more fleshed out, but in terms of how you experience the world, they feel very similar to me.
Edit: Interesting what you say about RottR. I've only recently started in on it, and had believed it was going to be more of the same format of the first TR2013 (which I enjoyed quite a bit.)
Edit2: Actually "darker and creepier" isn't want I want from a TR game at all....so I may end up actually skipping Shadow.... the old games weren't terribly dark, 2013 made it gritty, what I've seen of Rise so far isn't particularly dark and creepy (DLC aside, not a chance I'm touching that DLC...I do not do horror, at all, ever. )
@BlueOcean
I guess I was just always a fan of the kitsch original outfit. shorts, boots, gunbelt, turqois top. And her face was iconic. I'm not really into idea of Lara being a real person whose hair and clothes get dirty, and whose eyebrows and lips have to be realistic in size and shape.
I still look at the design on the cover of the very first game and wonder why we can't have that, but better. If they wanted it to look like an actual person, even back then they could have dressed up an actor for the box shot, or had a painter make it.
@Pod The series really started out as a comic book art style and Indiana Jones inspired game that kind of mixed point & click adventure with action play back with Core Design. After they pretty much wet the bed with Angel of Darkness (mostly due to Eido's basically going bankrupt, though), the game switched to Crystal Dynamics and they've been making it ever more realistic since. I was among the few that actually liked AoD other than the fact it barely ran.
I also liked 2013 with the Survivor kind of vibe. If it's heading into dark/creepy/horror though, that's not Tomb raider to me , that's a clone of the bazillion horror/creepy/suspense games out there. takes it from a great popcorn series to an "avoid at all costs" series if it goes that far.
@NEStalgia
"Darker and creepier isn't want I want from a TR game at all....so I may end up actually skipping Shadow.... the old games weren't terribly dark, 2013 made it gritty, what I've seen of Rise so far isn't particularly dark and creepy (DLC aside, not a chance I'm touching that DLC...I do not do horror, at all, ever. )"
No, as I said that's just my guess! By creepier and darker I don't mean the world but the tombs and I am not even sure about it, I don't even know what fans really want at this point. I have no idea about how Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be. Furthermore, I won't watch or read much about it because they really can't disappoint me after Rise of the Tomb Raider and I prefer the game to surprise me. If you ask me what I really expect is better writing and even more refined gameplay, the rest is anyone's guess.
I insist on Rise of the Tomb Raider and Uncharted 4/The Lost Legacy being absolutely different.
@NEStalgia
The origin Story of Lara is quite fascinating with Core wanting to revive Rick Dangerous, their comical Indiana Jones/Flash Gordon knock off. The spanish designer they hired turned him into a woman to avoid getting to close to indy, and a sensation was born.
They've been trying to wring the gusto out of her ever since, I feel. Self confidence and sexual ooze isn't in high regard anymore.
@Pod I get what you mean. The original design was added to Rise of the Tomb Raider, though.
In my opinion yes, she shouldn't be so far away now from the original idea.
@BlueOcean Ahhh, cool, excitement restored!
Yeah if what you say is true that Rise is very different from 2013 (doesn't seem it so far, but again I just started it and I keep cycling between like a dozen games....Valkyria demo the past few...moving onto Octopath soon....Forza Horizon and Tekken 7 + DB:FZ keep sucking me in too....and I'm still working through XC2!) then you'd be right, it's different from Uncharted. 2013 however I still maintain is basically a somewhat better Uncharted though
@Pod Meanwhile hollywood and the music industry keeps finding more ways to rip more clothing off actual women and there's a line of 13-30 year old women lined up 10 city blocks daily just to get a chance to be the next one. But heaven forbid comic book Croft look more or less like Jolie before Jolie even played her.... Not that I dislike the new Lara, she's extremely likable. I just dislike that she exists because "the world" decided the old one shouldn't. She was over-sexualized, yes. But mostly she was just out of her time....she was the comic book culmination of the strong and sultry actresses of the 60's. Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Ertha Kitt, Marlo Thomas, both Audrey and Katherine Hepburn, etc. Given that it was an Indiana Jones play off, the time period fit the genre, too. It's a shame. The hand-wringers miss all the context and see "victimization" while missing all those archetypes were never victims....they were the ones using their appeal as a weapon. Which contributed to both their allure, and their aura of danger. Just like Lara..... Now we get "girl next door trying to live up to her father: the dungeon hunter" which is also a cool character, but it has a very different vibe than the "take-no-prisoners dangerous angel" kind of character. It's like turning Jack Sparrow into an RP-speaking nobleman for the future of the series.
I'm hoping that they're building up to morphing her into her old self by shadow though....I mean it's an origin story trilogy after all....somehow she gets from scared mouse in a shipwreck to the no-nonsense, seen it all before, 'tude factory, right?
@NEStalgia Yes, Tomb Raider 2013 is more linear and more violent than Rise of the Tomb Raider. Excitement restored sounds fair enough! Ha.
Now I'll give you a piece of advice because you are making exactly the same mistake as I did once. Don't play several adventure games at the same time. You won't enjoy any of them as much. The best memories I have of adventure/story games are when I focused on one them exclusively. I really really recommend everybody to do the same.
If Shadow is the culmination of the reboot trilogy they should now make Lara herself again, I agree.
@BlueOcean Yeah, I usually do that. I'm kind of doing the Whitman's Sampler of everything I've accumulated on sales to know what to dive into next. The list is quite large
The SRPGs and menu-driven turn based RPGs, though....I play those slow and in handheld mode..... I take too much darned time deciding how to move.
@NEStalgia
I could totally get into it, if what they're doing it ultimately justifying the character we used to see, so that going forward, no one will need to ask question about why she's such a powerhouse!
@BlueOcean
Yeah....you know I played AC4 almost entirely on Gamepad and I think it performed better there as it was only running @480p. Plus If I remembered AC2 trilogy that I played on X360 wasn't exactly a FPS dream.....it is after all Ubi.
Splinter Cell Blacklist. Which Ubi actually did a really good job on. The PS360 version had really terrible screen tearing that was bad even though it was not uncommon on those systems because of the way they frame rendered. The WiiU version ran at a higher native res (720p vs. 540p on x360) and because the way the WiiU frame buffer worked it never had tearing.
SCBL (now I can use it) was really a very fine Splinter Cell game and it sold like absolute crap, I mean like 10K on WiiU but less than 100K units on x360. The timing of the release, being at the end of that generation must have been a factor. I truly wish that game would come to Switch but also get an enhanced release on the twins. It sold so poorly Ubi said they were parking the series and then TC died so not sure when it we will see it again.
It was also one of the few games that used gamepad meaningfully. Its only flaw was the level load times were long...like close to 1min or so. Once you are in the level though no more loads so it was not a deal breaker.
@QuickSilver88 Thanks for all this information. I only had the Wii U when Assassin's Creed IV was released and it was so choppy on TV that I sold the game. When I got an Xbox I bought this version.
But it's true what you say, in the beginning Wii U was well supported by third parties, more than Switch was, and some of the ports were the definitive version. After all, Xbox One and PS4 came one year later. Wii U was a bit late or a bit underpowered although I love it for the exclusive games and backwards compatibility.
I am checking the store and Splinter Cell Blacklist, Splinter Cell Double Agent and Splinter Cell Conviction are available on Xbox One. I have to admit that I've never played this series but I already have Conviction installed because it was free with Gold.
Not related but I love how some last-generation games are enhanced on Xbox One X or just run and load better because of the much more powerful hardware.
Not sure how many people will read this as it is a few months old but I'm surprised no one has mentioned this:
Its not the POWER of the console, its the size of the games.
Right now the Nintendo Switch doesn't have games bigger then 32GB on it. Doom and Wolfenstein are 22GB.
Tomb Raider like Assassin's Creed is a lot closer to 50GB. Until Nintendo puts out 64GB cartridges (which is being introduced next year) at a reasonable price, third parties aren't going to jump onboard.
