Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has revealed via Twitter that he is working on the Switch version of the popular fighting franchise, which was officially announced during yesterday's Nintendo Direct.
According to Nintendo Soup, Sakurai says he has been working on the game "in silence" everyday, and says that more information will be forthcoming, if fans are patient. He did not, however, state the role he has on the game's team; recently, he said that he may consider moving into consulting role on future entries.
The game is launching this year, and will feature Splatoon's Inklings as playable characters for the first time ever.

I explained this along with why I believe this is an updated port and not a new Smash Bros. game.
This is at the end of the credits of the Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS reveal trailer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvudMu-5kIU
Now this is what's at the end of the Switch Smash Bros. trailer.
How I read this is that it's an updated port of the Wii U/3DS game. Nintendo and HAL Laboratory made the "original game". If you pay attention to gaming, you would have heard Sakurai recently talking about doing consultancy work, I think that's what he may be doing on this project and he was talking about Smash Bros. in this interview.
"…Well for me, every time I always think, “This might be the last one.” If it’s a request from a client then I’ll consider it, but I do wonder, “Is it alright if I’m not the director?” It might be good to take on more of a consulting role."

Nintendo wouldn't say at the end of the trailer in tiny writing that this is an "Original Game". If it was a new game, Nintendo would be all over telling people this fact.
Edit:
The same "Original Game" copyright was written about Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS. Scroll to the bottom.

Did we jump out of the worst timeline already? I think we did.
Working in silence doesn't surprise me. Probably his most peaceful years yet, lol.
It’s switchtime to make some cash with smash
Will be advertised as a new game not a port, but will run off an enhanced version of the Wii U engine. Id imagine Wii Fit Trainer, Mii fighters, Shulk and a few others can be cast aside in favour of new more up to date characters. Id like a proper single player mode.
If his name is on this, then we’re in good shape.
This could be a port of any of the 4 previous smash games and i wouldn’t mind one bit
Sakurai's role: official playtester. Meaning he spends ten hours each day in a beanbag chair with a Switch in hand and a latest build of Smash Switch.
The gamefaqs people (whose usernames I do not know) are gonna be so upset.
@-Green- Dude gamefaqs Switch forums is so infested with cancerous trolls that it's sad to see. Literally no moderation happens there.
I'm only wondering now if this'll be an entirely new game or a port.
@Dr_Corndog As someone who has done videogame testing in past I can assure you it does not look like that at all
They better add Diablo, Crash Bandicoot and Doomguy to the roster.
Last thought I had before going to bed last night - Sakuari's twitter account must be exploding today (in Japan) - so he's going to have to say something. Looks like he did a good job of both saying something and nothing at all regarding the "is or isn't it" line of questioning.
I'm just going to agree with the comment from @Antray1984 and say enhanced port that's simply called SSB and sold as a new game. Makes the most sense.
It's a combination of 3DS and Wii U port of Smash. Not a new game but not entirely old either.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE While I agree that this is probably 4.5 with a single player mode and a few other things thrown in, HAL is creditited in the trailer as working on this. My bet is they are using a new engine too.
Edit: nvm. I need coffee. I see what you were saying.
I’m leaning heavily towards it being Smash 5. Based purely on the idea that if it was an enhanced port, they’d have just shown it off, rather than given us a super vague teaser.
If its just a port, no way am I buying it. Those lazy, lazy bums!
Also: Wouldn't cry if Sakurai is on the sideline this time. He throwed waaaay to many Fire emblem characters in the game. Also, the game needs a totally fresh approach in my opinion!
This should be SMA5H... A port Would be disappointing, too many crap ports were shown last night I was so angry lol ... Just Smash5 please and no crap fighters like snake or cloud or sonic... Just pure Nintendo
I'm not personally into Smash but find it really weird that they're not confirming if it's an updated port or a totally new game (the very fact that there's uncertainty points toward the former imo)
@PhilKenSebben No, it just says Nintendo, copyright 2018. Then credits copyright as Nintendo and HAL Laboratory for working on the Wii U/3DS version.
They're probably just building hype until E3.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE yeah. I edited my comment. Coffee. Need.
@Henmii yeah it was swarmed with FE fighters just 2 is fine... Every character should have diff skins and colours...they got splatoon now, throw arms in, xeno, gunvolt, bayo yaknow
Good
I CANNOT believe there are a plethora of people who believe its a port, besides all the concrete evidence in the trailer, its also a working title. I don't think Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch needs a dang working title unless its a new game. They even updated links model, and its a TEASER. A port doesn't need a teaser
With this man on board I certainly don't worry too much about the direction this game will take, even if he made some rather questionable decisions for Smash 4 (such as Smash Tour and the lack of a proper Tournament mode). Still, I really hope for Sakurai that this entry won't put as much stress on him as the previous entries seemed to do to the point where he even got a hand injury due to how much work he had put into the games. If anyone deserves a reward for effort, it is definitely Sakurai.
Also I was among one of those who (partially) believed this would be a port of Smash 4, but with all the evidence people are bringing up, I'm now 95% certain this is a fully new entry. The other 5% is still from just feeling like it's still too early for a new Smash Brothers game and that it's coming out THIS YEAR!!! Come on, that is just utterly unreal! I fully expect them to delay this honestly, unless they go the 'free updates post-launch' route (along with (eventual) paid DLC).
To be honest, i DONT care about inklings, i just want more information on the new smash, especially if it has a story mode like the Wii version
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I thought it meant that the 64 game is made by HAL and that's why they own the franchise with Nintendo. Smash for Wii U/3DS is not by HAL as far as I know of, it's from Sora Ltd and Bandai Namco. HAL's website has list of the games they've worked on and according to it, the last Smash they developed was Melee.
Hey! I've seen so many people trying to figure out the roster in flames but I can't seem to find captain falcon!
It's having a tentative title, atleast one new character model, new characters, is being presented as a brand new game, had the old dojo completly removed, among other things. Writing "Original game (C) Nintendo / HAL" in small caps are odd, but irrelevant when it was Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco who worked on SSB4 and not HAL.. I can say to a 99% degree that this not a port, and even if it against all odds are one then it's a combination of both the 3DS and WU versions.
@Henmii haha, yea.. it'a literally Team Mario vs. Team Pokemon vs. Team Fire Emblem (and kiiiiiiinda Team Zelda)
I really hope he's in a consulting role. He worked himself half to death on the original Smash Wii U/3DS, no game is worth that.
As nice as Smash Bros. is and all, I'd much rather see Sakurai develop something completely different. That's when he does his best work, in my opinion.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Strange that by reading the article, I notice that it specifically stated that he wanted to do consulting work, yet you speak of
it (in the comment you wrote within the same minute this article was posted), like it’s news that we have to go find somewhere.. almost as if the article hadn’t been read yet..
Meanwhile.. I think alot of people will probably agree with me that whether it’s a new game or an updated game, it’s still great news. Great for those who didn’t have a Wii U if it’s the exact same game... great for everyone if it’s different / more... even great for everyone if it’s the same but fully portable console version. Win...or a win.
I hope it's not a port. I've played SMASH 4 on the 3DS quite a lot already. Hum I think I'm gonna play some Smash on my N3DS today.
Sakurai is a control freak (I say that with all due respect), so I doubt he’s letting someone else take charge.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Hmm. I don’t really care that much if it is a new version of 4, as long as it’s not a straight port. It’ll have been 4 years since Smash 4 so I’m leaning toward guessing it’s a new game, not an updated version of 4
So now "port" is to be your new favorite word, internet?
Why are you never happy?
I still want Rayman in the next Smash game. Whether this is a port or not.
@SmaggTheSmug Dash my dreams, why don'cha.
I doubt it would be a brand new game, likely to be an updated port.
However it would be nice to offer a mode with Melee mechanics.
On the contrary; Nintendo didn’t specify that it was a port (and they seem to have no issue telling people when a game is indeed a port). That being said; I think when E3 hits we will all find out that Smash for Switch is in fact, a new game and not a port.
@Antray1984 Shulk represent Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 hit 1 million units. They're not going to get rid of him.
@roboshort But they only finished working on it 2 years ago. This will have a few new characters(Inklings we know of, Ice Climbers might make a return and a new character), some new stages and possibly a story mode, something akin to Subspace Emissary. I'd say Sakurai is being consulted on moves for new characters and overall balance.
@Antray1984 don't you dare suggest that losing Shulk is ok 😤
@Late I wouldn't expect a response from the troll. In fact so many people believe the crap he spouts just because they can't do a basic Google search to find out that HAL had NOTHING to do with SSB on either the Wii U or the 3DS. Like you said it's co-developed by Sora and Bandai Namco, and it seems that development for this is being done in-house, at least from what we know so far.
Edit for source: https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/super-smash-bros-for-wii-u
@FTL I copied and pasted a comment I made earlier from elsewhere and added a bit.
"even great for everyone if it’s the same but fully portable console version."
Oh and em, you're forgetting about a certain 3DS version.
@AlphaJaguar I hope you're right. Shulk is my favorite.
On another note, I'm guessing it's a port. And I'll be 100% happy if it is Wii U was the best of all the Smash games. With that in mind, I'll also be happy if it's brand new as long as there's still an 8 player mode.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They worked on character dlc and balancing up to that point but that doesn’t take a full team. I imagine Sora started on their next game before Smash was released... though that game may not be Smash and this could be an enhanced port.
Will likely be built off of Smash 4 if it is a new game, which I think it is at this point.
I don’t see why we would need to remove characters to “make room” for new ones so hopefully the entire roster of 4 is included.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I didn’t forget - hence why I mentioned ‘console’ version.
@FTL The Switch is a handheld.
I believe it's a new entry a.k.a. Smash 5, if it's a port then it wouldn't need a working title nor a tease with no gameplay. I am kinda skeptical as to how the roster will look this time since Smash 4 had so big of them. I don't think guest characters like Cloud and Pac-Man will return this time since Square Enix and Namco are no longer involve in this but some guest characters like Ryu, Mega Man, Bayonetta, and Sonic may still return to promote their future games like Mega Man 11, Bayonetta 3, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, and Sonic Racing. We may get some few new original characters from the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon, ARMS, and perhaps Ever Oasis. Would be nice to see Amaterasu and Crash in Smash 5 to promote Okami HD and the Crash N-Sanity Trilogy.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Well I'll be..!
That's some ace detective skills! None of the people I talked this over with since the reveal seem to have caught that little snippet.
I was leaning towards this being a completely new game because of the (tentative title) and Breath of the Wild Link being featured, along with the fact that they're doing a mysterious build-up for the reveal instead of merely announcing that last gen's Smash Bros. will also be coming to Switch, like has been the case with all the other ports.
There are even more points to be made on why this might have been a new entry, but "Original Game © Nintendo HAL Laboratory, Inc." seems highly suspecious.
It doesn't appear they're packaging it as an "enhanced edition" or anything similar, which leads me to believe it's a new game. Plus, why would they not show a little in-game footage?
Now, if it's apparent they're leveraging existing assists or concepts, similar as the shift from Splatoon 1 to Splatoon 2, than I suppose some folks will claim they were right all along. However, I don't view Splatoon 2 as a port...and I don't think Smash Bros will be a port either.
I won’t even care if it’s just an updated port of the Wii U version, as long as one of the updates are to be able to turn off stage hazards. So many beautiful levels that I don’t play because none of my friends and family want nabbit to be an excuse why someone lost.
Or better yet, bring Corneria back.
@-Green-
I know right... I don't know why some gamers hate this man so bad; but they continue to play his game.
If it's the same engine with new characters/stages/modes then that's basically what every developer calls a sequel. It doesn't have to be rebuilt from scratch to qualify as a sequel.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If it was a straight port then it wouldn't need a new logo. It could just be called Super Smash Bros for Switch.
@NintyNate Good, only cheap players play Capt. Falcon In all seriousness, in the n64 version I had this neighbor who would just spam his command grab. MADE ME SO MAD
@retro_player_22 Sonic at this point is a main roster character, in my opinion. Cloud was super fun to play, so I'd be sad to see him go, but I mean characters like Solid Snake didn't stick around after Brawl, so it would make the most sense for Cloud and Pac-Man to hit the bricks.
@Galenmereth
You are right in that regard, of course.
The can't just do a trailer for "Super Smash Bros." and not provide an accurate copyright notice. And when the game isn't fully announced yet, they can only address the IP.
I got my fingers crossed for a new get. No Smash has yet been outright ported over, and Nintendo would want to reignite excitement from both Wii U and 3DS owners.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You actually disproved your own argument. Yes Smash 4 said original game because it was. Remakes and ports are also required to list the date of the original. We just have 2018 in the information. This isn't just some oversight. US and Canadian Copyright laws are strict. I don't think NOA would make such a simple mistake. Also why would you only tease it. This literally breaks from typical Nintendo form by not showing this game off if it's a port.
As someone who works in marketing and media, I would be completely shocked if Nintendo teased a port. And that Nintendo got one of the most regarded developers to create a port.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wasn't teased. It was just 'we're doing Mario Kart 8 on Switch'... because you can't tease something we've already seen.
Part of me wishes they hadn't shown Smash. This port or not port thing is perhaps even more annoying than people begging for it every day. Who cares if it's a port or not? If you like Smash, you're buying it regardless and will forget about it being a port (if it is) as soon as you start playing it. I know that's what I'm going to do.
Please, Sakurai-san take care of your health.
I like turtles
@Dringo
Yeah exactly. Quite the dramatics if it's just a port.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Can you not. Calling the Switch a handheld is inaccurate. If you were to say "Switch isn't a traditional console" that would be a more agreeable statement. Y'all (not just you) need to quit it on trying to classify Switch as just a handheld.
Which logo looks nicer?
or
I know which gets my vote easily.
Awesome
It definitely should be an "enhanced port"... why would they want all of the competitive community to learn a new game... that would just add to the time before it's seriously competitive and balanced.
I just hope they don't continue with the 1,000+ pieces of DLC... just give me the game and support it with a couple of packs with awesome new characters and maps.
@NintyNate BOI Snake was a good addition, I was dissapointed that he didn't appear in Sm4sh
Nintendo may very well be already planning to release Smash 4/5 over to NS. They may slightly modify(possibly remove stuff), or enhance it(leave stuff intact, & add more content). Then, down the line release another Smash for NS. The new Smash, will have some, or all, of its assets made in-tandem with the games those assets come from. Effectively, this turns the WU/3DS Smash port into a stopgap, similar to how Mario Kart 8 DX might be for that series. This is just a theory, of course.
This theory is based, in part, on the concept that not enough of their ips have enough new content to make a new entry. Lemme think, off the top of my head:
Super Mario Odyssey
Breath of the Wild
Samus Returns
Splatoon
Arms
That's off the top of my head. This is gonna sound like a dumb question, but have any other Nintendo franchises had game releases that have significant differences from their respective representations in the most recent Smash game(s)?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I can guarantee you the logo will change when they decide on a real name, it's just a placeholder for now. Trust me, they aren't going to throw a black and white logo on the box art.
At the very least, it won't be gimped because they have to get it to run on a 3DS. I haven't played Smash Bros on either the 3DS or the WiiU, but I wonder what they can really do to improve it.
If they polish it up to look as pretty as possible, additional characters, stages and even gamemodes and features can be introduced via DLC for years to come.
How different can Smash be on Switch? Perhaps it’ll be different enough like Splatoon 2 to scrape by as a sequel
@sauce not good at all! He's a key player
Well to be fair, SSB4 is so good that I don't mind Nintendo bringing out an updated version with tweaks here and there. And I do expect all previous DLC to be included on the cart. I also expect there to be some new battlefields too.
There's no way that this is a completely new game. It'll mostly likely be a definitive Smash 4 edition combining stages and content from Wii U, 3DS, with some new characters (not many) like the Squid kids, an ARMS character, possibly Rayman, and some completely new stages.
Considering how good Smash 4 on WiiU was, I’m kind of hoping that this is an enhanced port.
I mean, if this were to be a complete edition with all the DLC and stages from both the WiiU and 3DS versions, plus a handful of new stages and characters (inklings, BotW Link, Odyssey Mario + Cappy, Ice Climbers, etc) and maybe a fully-fledged story mode, I personally couldn’t be happier.
Though of course even that would make certain people scream PORT! left and right anyway...
@Jezebel95
And there ain't nothing wrong with a port. Smash 4 for Wii U was a perfect game! If anything, it'll be a mobile enhanced definitive edition. Fighting sequels are usually enhanced ports anyways so as content packed as 4 was... there's no reason for this to be a completely new game imo.
Up to now they released on each system Super Smash. Good for the fans! Never been a fan though
I think it just might be a new game. 4 years since the last release and no gameplay on it is a good indication. Every port has shown gameplay when it was announced. Yeah dlc came out but as we all know, dlc isn’t worked on by the whole team. Once that game ships, it’s on to the next one while some stay behind to do updates n dlc.
Port, mix or new game?!?
No-one knows.
Also, is it just me or is the term 'Port' being used as shorthand to bash Nintendo with or what!?
I get that people want original games for their new machine but a re-release of a great game is still a great game.
And it's all the more relevant in the case of any Wii U game considering it's tiny user base.
I think Nintendo know that just re-releasing Smash Wii U wouldn't be enough as it's fans will have played it to death. But as for the other re-releases and those that are to come - many I expect - they will bring them to their sexy new system so they can make the money and reap the credit for their hard work.
And it won't stop them making new games.
From the way it's listed on the Nintendo UK store page. It looks like it's called smash bros 2018...although I'm aware it isn't. I'd actually like a less is more approach. I'd rather 30 - 40 balanced characters then a kitchen sink approach of everything ever considered thrown into the game. Kinda dilutes the experience it a bit for me if there are 60 characters with numerous clones etc
This is one of the few games I would be happy to see an enhanced port of, providing there is A LOT more new characters, balancing and a proper single player mode like Melee and Brawl.
Captain Toad, Bayenetta 2 and DKC:TF deserve to be scolded.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The footage you showed has more counter-evidence.
Copyright 2018. If it was a port it would have to say 2014-2018.
Really though do you actually think Nintendo would make a CGI trailer, with no music from Smash 4 and with a new logo.
With Sakurai going out of his way on Twitter to say "We’re barely at the stage where we’ve only announced the title."
For a port?
I'm sure it'll be an updated/enhanced port of sorts of Smash U, but I've found I don't really mind; Nintendo will make it worth the upgrade, and I find it pointless for them to build a completely new engine from the ground up.
@Seacliff mario kart 8 deluxe trailer https://youtu.be/tKlRN2YpxRE?t=1m23s
it also only says copyright 2017
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That "original game" is referring to Smash 64.
The article in the Switch's news section specifically refers to it as "Super Smash Bros. (working title)".
It's pretty clearly a new game. It will probably reuse quite a few assets from Smash 4, but it's a new game nonetheless.
They'd have said if it was a port.
I don’t understand why so many people are dead set on it being a port, consider Sakurai tweeted saying they don’t even have a name yet and the logo is slightly different than 4’s logo. Why would they not reuse a logo and why would it need a “name”? I’m not saying in certain it’s a new game but I don’t see how anyone can be certain of either side at this point.
@Seacliff
I'm sure it won't be branded as a port. You can't call the game Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS DX (that would be absurd).
It'll be branded as a new game, probably something boring like, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch. Personally they should go with a progressive name after Melee, Brawl. Maybe Battle Royal, Skirmish, or Mayhem.
But the content will likely use all previous Wii U/3DS stages, previous DLC, and only handful of new characters/stages. When you put that together, there's your new game (and enhanced port at the same time). Covers all bases.
It’ll be called Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch. They have continued to work on DLC for the game. They will combine all content from the 3DS iteration and update with additional stages and classics from other titles. However they will utilise the engine, character balancing and other inner workings of the previous Wii U version
Just glad to see Samurai still involved, port or not.
@Antray1984 swap female wii fit trainer for male wii fit trainer (i know you can switch via costume but i mean swap them during character select). swap shulk for rex
@Henmii its time for Sakurai to pass the torch
@Dev Still for this Smash for Switch im hoping Sakurai is doing this By Being Creative advisor so he might Pass the torch and live vicariously through the new Director
This is a new game but the haters/skeptics will tell you otherwise. Come E3, they all will look very silly as they end up 99% of the time.
@ottospooky ....are you spitballing or is that your legitimate prediction?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm pretty sure this is a new game, it's just my opinion, because usually, when Nintendo announces the port of something, they show content of the game and the trailer is not very creative.
This reveal trailer IS creative.
And when you enter in the smash bros site. http://www.smashbros.com/wiiu-3ds/es/ (It's in Spanish, keep that in mind, but it still counts.) And when you click in the logo, the one shown yesterday, then it sends you to another link, I don't think Nintendo would be dumb just to put a link in a site, just to send you to the same thing, Also, Sakurai Said he's still working on the title, if he's still working in the title, it means it's not a port, because if it was a Smash 4 port, they could have easily shown it in the trailer of yesterday to don't leave you with questions.
@Hikingguy
i guess what would they change? the graphics ain't getting any better on the switch. add characters, stages is about it. unless folks are wanting an overhauled fighting engine.
I love how everyone thinks they know if it's a new game or a port based off exactly zero seconds of gameplay footage
Sakurai ain't there for them to port Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
@Brandon123 yes, I agree.
The way Smash is being handled is completely different to all the Wii U re-releases. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was not featured in the original January presentation, Pokkén was announced by itself, Bayonetta 2 was cover for a Bayonetta 3 announcement, DKCTP/Hyrule Warriors were relegated to a mini Direct. These ports have been low key and at no time was there any ambiguity as to whether these games were ports or not.
Nintendo aren't going to 'break the internet' on a Smash reveal just to have to roll it back in a few weeks by declaring it a port of the Wii U game.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Also, when Nintendo announce a port, they directly tell it to you, they didn't in this reveal trailer.
All of you saying, this will be a port: You will look soooo dumb, when this game comes out! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
My guess is that Masahiro Sakurai moved to the producer role and Shinya Kumazaki was brought in to take over directing and that's why Kirby Star Allies is a bit lackluster.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE The problem is the copyright year is 2018 rather than 2014-18 plus Bandai Namco who developed the last smash is not mentioned at all. Also this announcement trailer is way too dramatic for a straight port
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
No, itˋs NOT a handheld. Itˋs a H-Y-B-R-I-D console!
@JamesR Yeah, they would not break the internet just for a port.
@Yorumi
Why should they specifically mention, that this is not a port? Just because a bunch of smarty-pants wonˋt stop to say it will be one?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE And if this is a port, why would Sakurai confirm that he’d been working on this game in silence for the past few years?
Sakurai made a tweet saying he has been working on this game for the past few years in silence. That means it's not a port. Here's the source of his tweet. https://twitter.com/Sora_Sakurai/status/971885028245307392 Translation: I am still at the stage of just announcing the title, but I keep silent and working day by day. Please wait until the time that content can be released or released.
@Dringo
There were a lot of ports in the direct. Maybe it is an enhanced port but they didn't want to reveal that because of the possibile negative reactions.
If it's Smash 5 it will be just a Smash 4++, like Splatoon 2 is
A Smash 4, but way better, but there's no way they do a totally new game not based on Smash 4, unless they have some time travel powers so they had more time to work on the game
Stop your believes, they are just building the hype so stop with your "the teaser is too dramatic ; if it was a port we would have seen gameplay" that's non sense, whatever if it's a port or a new game or a Smash 4++ everyone will buy it
@Hikingguy
that's what I was saying; maybe i wasn't clear.
i don't see what 'graphically' they can change from the engine used on the wiiU. the switch is about par so that engine will be what they use.
i don't know enough about smash so maybe folks want the fighting engine changed up or something? to me the game is just button mashing and hopping around but it seems there is some following to the thing so i'd assume there's some strategy to the fighting engine that i can't figure out.
so i think we're agreeing. it's the other folks in the thread wanting 'something new' that i was responding to. all of the smash games look the same to me so i wouldn't even begin to know what folks want changed. maybe someone will explain.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Read what you quoted from me... I said if it were the same game as the Wii U, it would still be good because it would still be the console version of the game but portable.
No where there do I say the Switch is a console.
Japanese language or no buy.
Edit: My first troll post. Bait was taken. Thank you.
Fighting games are pretty much all just limited update sequels right? Street Fighter started this and it has been the norm ever since. I mean... every sequel to Smash Bros. is similar to a "port".
The thing about Smash Bros. is that completely new modes and shuffling of how to arrange fights and a few new characters is PLENTY for Smash Bros. Especially when the main attraction is that it's on a game console that is actually popular so you have a better chance of playing with other people.
I would say there is about a zero percent chance that this is some sort of a reimagining of the Smash Bros. game into something completely new with a brand new engine.
Now... is there a single player addition? Nintendo seems to have found value in that with Splatoon 2 by amping up the single player game and even offering a DLC with a focus on single player. Maybe a new more interesting single player adventure could be added... I give it low odds, but it's about the only thing that would get me to play again, I think.
this pretty much confirms this is a new smash bros game not a port.
I doubt Sakurai is involved for a straight port even if its adding characters or stages, I geuss know how long he has been working on it would help make a better guess if its brand new or a port
Also why tease a port? show some gameplay and flash words like new stages and characters
@Snaplocket ROTFL. I never troll but I literally posted that comment because I saw you were above me. I will say your response was milder than I expected, but you still said something. So thank you that made my day. However I will apologize for for posting that with the intention of seeing if you would toss in your two cents.
(Although previous smash games allowed for Japanese so I used to play melee in Japanese only as a kid. )
Do we consider Splatoon 2 a true sequel or an enchanted port (splatoon 1,5) with a number next to it?
@Yorumi
So, now every time Nintendo shows a teaser trailer for a game in an established franchise you scream „Port!!!“ without any kind of clear evidence whatsoever? Nintendo should clarify, that a game is a port and they do it, but there should be no need to clarify, a game is NOT one.
@Antray1984 If Shulk is removed I will be on the verge of suicide (unless Fiora or Melia replaces them PLEASE NINTENDO I NEED THEM).
Plus, I'd bet you that after the success of Xenoblade 2 Nintendo is working on a remastered version of the first game (or even just virtual console), so keeping Shulk in there would still be good heckin marketing.
Also, Sakurai really loves Xenoblade so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he decides to keep the old characters, as we can see with Waifu Emblem.
@dimi
Splatoon 2 is a sequel to Splatoon.
Just like how this new Smash Bros will most likely be a sequel to Smash Bros Wii U/3DS.
@MrBlacky Let the haters believe it's a port. They'll just be more salty when it becomes clearer.
I sure hope he ended up landing that vacation...
Such a great guy.
@Cynel,
Yeah, I think that too. A fresh approach. A strong single-player with cutscenes, please. Oh and I want to unlock most characters by playing. Make me work for my roster!
@TheAceofMystery 100% agree. They weren't so quick as to call it a port like with MK8D or Pokken DX. The copyright also doesn't state ©2014-2018 like with Ports like Bayonetta 2. It's just ©2018. Looks like the law proved us that Nintendo is making a sequel XD
Look at any port for the Switch and you'll see. Skyrim? ©2011-2017. Mario Kart? ©2014-2017. And so on. That's how the law works. Let's see who denies that. I've never seen a teaser for a port either so it's only a matter of time before we see more details since the game is coming this year.
My take on this is it will be likely sold as a new game but will reuse the engine,
repurpose assets to give a slightly different graphical vibe, do away with the UI, change (and not just add) to the roster etc. I mean people can call that a 'port ' but plenty of sequels work that way.
Simple logic. Ports don't get teased.
@WiltonRoots Flawed logic. There are plenty of games that are teased that turned out to be ports or remastered titles.
Either way, this is still nice news. Nice to finally see a Smash game coming to the switch. ^^
@Shade_Koopa Either way, I've never played Smash for more than 5 minutes on a Gamecube a very long time ago. Could this be the version I finally buy?
The teaser alone would have cost absurd amounts of time and money to make; That was some really fine CG and direction. I really feel like Nintendo would have announced outright if it was a port. It doesn't make sense to have only a working title and spend all that money showing it off for simply an updated version of a game, as that could cause much disappointment. Also, if it was Smash 4, wouldn't the copyright have had to be 2014-2018 instead of just 2018? Or if simply just crediting the IP itself, the copyright, if I'm correct, would have been 1999-2018. Nintendo wants a BIG game for the holiday of the Switch's second year, and Smash 5 would most certainly set sales records for the series.
I have a potential name for this on Switch, Super Smash Brothers: Mash Attack.
@boop22 I’m pretty sure this is what they’re gonna do... did my prediction sound sarcastic?
Port? New game? Who cares!!! Smash Is coming to Switch. This is good news. Can't get over all the complaining about ports. Some people are never happy.
@Hikingguy
well it's the same posters over and over again about ports.
getting old real fast. we get it; you guys were the 25 that bought a wiiU. maybe move on to PC or something if you're so hurt about that purchase.
I'm in the "I'll take it whether it's new or an enhanced port camp" as I just love Smash, period. If it were a port, combining the Wii U and 3DS versions together into one game would be great for a person like me as I didn't play the 3DS version, so there's arenas and modes I haven't even played, and, new characters like the inklings or ARMS would be added. If it's new, then guys... IT'S NEW! Lol, this is all good one way or the other
I'm just glad it's coming, and THIS year.
Please Include Rex and Pyra
@Snaplocket First time for anything, right?
@sword_9mm
I'm not a one with an opinion 0on the ports situation, in fact I on;t have witch, nor do I really want one. I have a question for you though, in regards to the U-ports; Do you actually believe you are going to get NEW versions in these ports if they release an enhanced port? If Smash is a port, enhanced port, whatever....rest assured you will not be getting a new Smash game before the end of this generation. Do you see why others may feel upset or their loyalty that they had while you sat last generation out, about not getting new and real next games in these series this gen?
http://www.smashbros.com/wiiu-3ds/us/
Has anyone seen this? It's on the Smash 3DS and Wii U page. It links the trailer for the Switch game.
@Hikingguy
That's good!
I was saying that some of the port issues people have though, is because it is very likely only one Smash game makes it to Switch generation. if it is an port+, then i could understand that WiiU owners would be disappointed that it is mostly a re-release vs. a new game, since an all-new probably won't make it out for several years -one per generation is how these big titles have been.
I don't care either way, but I get why they'd be upset. I am spending this entire generation backlogging and taking time to enjoy all the games I have bought, downloaded on Wii U and 3DS...... I'll maybe jump back onto "current" next gen -if they give me a reason to, so the excessive porting is not a issue for me, but rebuying full price retail games with small updates would be a dealbreaker for me anyway...
@msvt
i don't know what a 'new' smash would be. sorry; i don't care about the series.
but no; i don't feel sorry for anyone that bought into the wiiU and thought it would be xyz time till the next gen. console makers time and time again haven't been held to that standard. look to the 32x/segacd/turboduo/jaguar/cd/etc........... N is no better.
@avocadopear Well Kirby star allies isn't out yet so dont assume its lackluster
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think you're grasping.
Besides, theorizing is worthless here.
@Yorumi I have to agree the guy's being overly hostile.
I'm personally in the new game camp for a multitude of reasons:
There has never been an enhanced port of any Smash game to date.
Each system has had it's own unique Smash game.
The copyright year shown in the trailer says 2018, which is the year the copyright was established. Were it a port, it would say 2014-2018.
The total lack of gameplay and the lack of more of the Smash 4 roster being shown.
Despite that though, there's no definitive evidence as to whether or not it's a new game or a port, and anyone who tries to claim outright that it's either/or is basically grandstanding for their egos.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Flames make everything better!
@Hikingguy
I have so many games I downloaded after buying on sale, etc. that are indies or eshop gems (shovel knight, forma8, axiom verge or whatever its called)... have not even touched them yet! Crazy. Same story for my 3ds, which i just bought top rated classics from DS and 3DS retail copies -like 15 games or so, and all for under $12 best value any of us can get is to actually spend the time with games we have. personally the generations have moved a bit too quick for me to keep up... heck I still want to replay Pikmin over again for gamecube -back on point, even if I impulse bought a Switch (first Nintendo I didn't buy at launch) I still would never find the value of a re-buy on such recent games. Smash is my jam though so this one does have my attention even though I only recently got Smash3DS.
Cheers.
@Yorumi
Out of 24 Nintendo-published games only 6 are ports and from ALL of them, you did know so from the beginning.
So again: No reason to believe, Smash Bros. will be no new game!
@MegaVel91
I‘m just not a fan of spreading uninformed BS. That‘s all.😘
Just as Mario Kart 7 was based on the l Wii engine, I would think that Smash Switch would most likely be based on the Sm4sh code, of course with improvements and modifications as happens when you make a new game / release on a new platform.
...the copyright at the bottom of the new smash tease means nothing. Companies control what copyright show where, it could've just said 2018 Nintendo if they wanted it to. Some have even put out bogus copyright just to throw folks off.
Before MGS5 was revealed, they teased it as a completely different game called The Phantom Pain and made by a fake Swedish developer named Moby Dick Studios. It was used in the copyright.
It's a fighting game, so the idea of reusing assets for a new game is not unheard of. I'm guessing they'll be using enhanced WiiU models and bring back things like target smash or the subspace emissary. I just want to see indie characters finally show up along with my main homie Travis Touchdown.
I've always wanted Bad Mr. Frosty in Super Smash Bros. I thinks he fits in the game really well !
@SLIGEACH_EIRE it has a new logo. show me one port that has a completely new logo.
Yeah, I'm guessing the 'original game' credit was partly because we haven't got it's final name yet (to differentiate it from the original game), and partly because they haven't actually announced who is developing it.
