Re: Nintendo Removes Infamous Drugging Scene From Western Localisation Of Fire Emblem Fates

@Warruz

OK. I think what you're getting at is that localisers have a responsibility to alter anything that may offend western sensibilities, and I'd agree with that.

However, I feel this has been grossly misrepresented in regards to Fire Emblem and the character Soleil. She isn't homosexual and the protagonist didn't give her the "drug" so that he could score. In that respect, I don't feel it was neccesary to change this in the localisation.

PS, it's a block of tofu on fire.

@Damo

Like I said, it's a trope that's more prevelant in Japanese media. She's a character who just feels more comfortable around women.

The use of "My type" doesn't neccesarily suggest she is sexually attracted to the other female units. Simply that there is a particular type of woman - her type - who she enjoys being near.

That's not to say she doesn't enjoy the sensation from fawning over pretty women (before she passes out.)

Re: Nintendo Removes Infamous Drugging Scene From Western Localisation Of Fire Emblem Fates

What, so because Soleil is rendered unconcious at the sight of cute girls, that makes her exclusively gay? As opposed to bisexual? Or even heterosexual?

The support conversation was about the protagonist helping her overcome that disability on the battlefield. The trope Soleil displays may be something that's less politically correct outside of Japan, but she is not intended to be a homosexual character.

It's regretable that the support conversation could be misconstrued as "conversion therapy", but the sites reporting on this got the wrong end of the stick.

You can read more about it here:
http://nichegamer.com/2015/07/the-story-behind-fire-emblem-fates-completely-falsified-gay-conversion/

The website states there are spoilers for the support conversation, but seeing as all that will be torn up and re-written, that hardly matters now. The question is, how will the censors localisers handle it. Will they make Soleil explicitly hetero? (She isn't a romance option for a female protagonist as far as I'm aware) Would that infuriate the tumblr crowd even more?

Re: Fire Emblem Fates New Nintendo 3DS XL Model Confirmed, Along With DLC Details

edhe

It probably doesn't have a European release date yet because they're too busy censoring localising it.

Seriously, it's a month away from release in North America - and with the previous one doing fairly well in Europe, you'd think they'd be gearing up for the release hype by now. That would be unless the game is actually a few months away from releasing in Europe.

If it was any other game, I'd buy it a few months after release, but since it's proving - in America at least, that the special edition is like gold dust, I'm going to have to jump on this the moment it becomes available for sale.

As for the DLC, the only "vital" piece seems to be the "Revelation" story. If I deem the other pieces to offer good value for money, I'd consider them. I'll try and not fall back on the EXP/Gold farming ones as much this time (although they are almost required in the hardest hard difficulty in order for you to stand a chance).

Re: RCMADIAX to Temporarily Remove AVOIDER From the Wii U eShop

@Wiidsguy

I can't get the track to run.

But I feel I should apologise for being a bit hostile in my earlier post. I'm sure it's an artist's worst nightmare to be accused of plagiarism, and while we can all agree there are similarities in the two tracks (and despite the possibilities I hypothesised in my other post), I could equally imagine a situation where you were able to arrange the song from the loop banks, having loaded up that song in question.

Re: RCMADIAX to Temporarily Remove AVOIDER From the Wii U eShop

edhe

Just saw the story on Destructoid where they elaborated on which track it was (although @Freeon-Leon has since posted it), and I can confirm, owning Rytmik RetroBits, that the track in question is practically the same, but with a bit of tinkering.

The musician for Avoider probably composed it in Rytmik, and to claim ignorance is pathetic. Now, on the other hand, that isn't to say Cinemax (the company behind Rytmik) would mind if the music was altered and used in another project (I haven't read any terms regarding this), but he'd still be lying if he claimed he'd never heard it before.

Furthermore, if he was simply to have loaded up the track in Rytmik, then started composing the music using the track's loop bank, it's still highly unlikely that he would have constructed a piece that is alomst identical (minus about 10 seconds of build up) to the Rytmik track in question.

It must be said that I haven't heard the full track as it appears in the eShop game - does it deviate any further? There's nothing wrong with sampling an existing track and building on it to create something (drastically) new , but judging by the actions of the publisher, that isn't the case.

Re: The Teaser Site For Fire Emblem Fates Has Just Gone Up in North America

@Rei

I agree. I've been checking sites almost every other day to see if I can place a preorder for the special edition, but the only ones available are a placeholder one, or the two seperate "Birthright"/"Conquest" ones.

I know we've just had Christmas, but I expect it to finally show up in the next week or so if it's that close to release.

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th December (Europe)

I'd be tempted by Citizens of Earth at that price, I've already got Terraria on PC, I've got too many music apps on my 3DS to want to get Rytmik Ultimate as well (Rytmik, Rytmik Rock, Rytmik Retrobits, both KORG 3DS apps...), and racing games aren't really my bag.

I like RPGs. Atlus RPGs. I already have Shin Megami Tensei IV though.

@Artwark

Why be content with that if we can just pray a fissure opens up beneath SEGA headquarters, and sends the whole lot to hell?

Fortunately, both cabinets will be coming west eventually (although I don't know how that would affect you, living in India). There are games they seem to withhold from the rest of the world, but that's just what happens when games are produced in Japan.

As for myself - will I be popping any coins into these, unfortunately not. I've never really been one to visit arcades. Living where I am, most of them are on the coast, but there is one in the nearby city. It'd be interesting to see what they have, because there are some pretty interesting games that are arcade only. The Ninja outfit contains aspects from the Japanese culture that may offend those native to Japan. Cut it now. Also, regarding the Swordmaster, Kimonos can only be worn by those native to Japan, and should also be cut.

The Chariot outfit contains aspects from the ancient Egyptian culture that may offend those native to Egypt. Cut it now.

The Monk outfit contains aspects from the Tibetian culture that may offend those native to Tibet. Cut it now.

The male White Mages wear skullcaps that may offend catholics, the Rangers wear animal skins that may offend PETA, Atheists may object to a Bishop class when there is no Dawkinsknight alternative and the Cornish will surely not want to be reminded of their days as Pirates. Cut it now.

Re: Hands On: Getting Pinned Down By Nintendo Badge Arcade

edhe

So the way I understand it, you get free plays for every 10 practice badges you get, and every hidden special badge you get.

I've played for three days, on the first day, I cleared a few badges, one of which was a special one, so I got a free try.

On the second day, the practice machine had 4 large badges - I grabbed 3 of them, but none of them were a special one (being large, they were tricky to grab), so I wasn't able to play that day.

Today was the Mario Bros. one where you pick bowser up, and all the badges can cascade in to the middle. I wasn't able to get them to drop all at the same time, but was able to clear them all within 5 tries. No special badges, but a free try for clearing enough badges overall. I got one free try, and I wasn't going to waste it on the real version, so I went to a different, hammer game and was able to grab a few.

Honestly, as silly as it sounds, I'd pay money for the badges. The crane game seems like a roundabout way of getting them, and just a cynical method of draining my funds.

Re: Hands On: Getting Pinned Down By Nintendo Badge Arcade

edhe

It'd be nice if we could just purchase the badge sets rather than go through the rigmarole of paying for chances to get them by playing a crane game.

Even with the free try per day (if you're lucky enough to ace the practice), you're then given one chance on the claw - and some games need a set-up turn before you can get a cascade going. So either you waste your one turn trying to win big, you go for an easy, single badge, or you pay money.

I've spent enough money for 5 turns - I'd rather not spend any more, if I'm not guaranteed a good return.

This model is truly insidious. I don't care if it takes years - I'm not spending several pounds for the chance to win badges.

I'll look forward to the sporadic free tries though (are there going to be days where you get 5 tries for free?).

Re: More North American Women Own A Games Console Than Men

@Damo

Don't be facetious! Little boys don't like being called sexist neckbeards and basement dwelling virgins for the games (and content therein) they enjoy. The exact games the encroaching neon haired hipsters and grief merchants take exception with, and are trying to stamp out.

Unless you've got another junk poll that says 85% of men don't want women in gaming, don't even try to make that claim.

Nice clickbait, by the way. Just like @Fee, I could tell this was one of your specials a mile away.

Re: More North American Women Own A Games Console Than Men

edhe

Sorry, but asking an average of 38 people per U.S state, no matter your methods can not conclusively prove that "More North American Women Own A Games Console Than Men".

I wouldn't be surprised if the figures are more or less balanced in reality, but for me, this doesn't prove anything.

Re: Miiverse Gets a Major Web Redesign, and Introduces Adverts

This is the webpage connecting to an ad server (one of several on loading the page), sending all sorts of details out to determine what ads you receive. Although not unique to Miiverse, it has a noticeable effect on loading times, and for that reason, I'll actually do something I've never considered, and install AdBlocker.

Nintendolife is the same, allthough it connects to facebook and google too (and God knows where they sell that information), but I'll probably add Nintendolife into the exceptions list.

My internet connection is too slow to have it bogged down by all this traffic.

I can't blame Nintendo for this though, as it's something everybody else is doing.
