Further to last night's rumours suggesting that Microsoft is planning to bring an Xbox app, Project X Cloud and its Game Pass service to Switch, more details have come to light regarding the possible cross-pollination.
French gaming website Jeuxvideo has extra details regarding the potential collaboration between the two gaming giants. Firstly, the site mentions not only Ori and the Blind Forest, but also 2D platforming boss-battler Cuphead as one of the potential games come to Switch, although it's unclear if they'll be native games or part of the 100 Game Pass and X Cloud titles potentially available before 2020 arrives. Getting Cuphead on Switch in any form, regardless of the technicalities, would be something of a coup for Nintendo after Microsoft nabbed lifetime console exclusivity for the game which emulates classic Fleischer animation from the early 20th century.
While no mention is made of PlatinumGames' dead project Scalebound, there are suggestions that a big Microsoft franchise 'could' potentially come to Switch in some form. The website is hazier on the details in this area, so we'd recommend a significantly larger pinch of salt here. As a reminder for the Nintendo purists, the biggest exclusive series on Xbox include Forza, Gears of War and Halo. Master Chief for Smash? Quiet down at the back!
The company also owns Rare, the British developer which used to be in Nintendo's wheelhouse until they were sold along with their IPs to Microsoft in 2002. The developer's catalogue – especially for the Nintendo 64 era – holds a special place in the heart of many Nintendo gamers, so even the slightest possibility that we could see Rare Replay with classics like Banjo-Kazooie or Perfect Dark once again on a Nintendo console is very exciting.
Let's not get carried away, though. While Jeuxvideo is certain that high-level meetings have taken place, other details are sketchy. It does mention that sources refuse to confirm whether Nintendo games could appear on Microsoft platforms, although we can't imagine Nintendo would permit that. With Microsoft languishing in third place this generation following the bungled launch of Xbox One, an alliance would arguably stand to benefit the Redmond company over Nintendo.
That said, Switch gamers stand to win big if it's possible we'll see Rare games back on a Nintendo system for the first time in a long while (Nintendo-owned IPs notwithstanding, of course). Regardless, these whispers represent exciting times for an industry that's more in flux than ever.
"Reggie and Phil sittin-"... No, hang on... "Doug and Phil sitting in a tree..." Is this wishful thinking? Do you think this move would make sense for both parties? Any Xbox exclusives you wouldn't mind trying on Switch? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

Cuphead graphics are just so amazing! I would love to see more games like this! It would give that extra playing a RPG game for example. But true old school RPG
It really makes sense for both sides here. Microsoft has been clear that they want Xbox to be a service, not just a piece of hardware. And it would be pretty good marketing for Nintendo if they were able to advertise and say, “Hey! You can play Xbox games on the Switch now!”
Cuphead is vastly overrated game. It is gorgeous, but having skill based difficult platformer that relies on you getting right sequences from random ones every now and then... that's just bad game design.
I love these rumors. I would like for all the game companies to cooperate. Each could make their own controllers, and I guess even portable variants on the main architecture, but there would be a single system to develop for like Android, iPhone, and PC. Would I like to play Breath of the Wild at 60 fps on Xbox one X? Uh, yeah, especially if I could use the switch pro controller.
@LunarFlame17 There is also the possibility of Nintendo piggy backing on the achievement system for games that exist on both platforms since it is relatively easy to hook into it!.
@60frames-please Nintendo won't let that happen, this is about Microsoft pushing their service on other platforms not the other way around.
Cuphead is absolutely sensational. I don't usually repurchase games, but I'll make an exception for this if the rumor pans out. One of the best action-platformers ever made.
@Jokerwolf Exactly! Plus Switch games will be able to use an online infrastructure that actually works!
Best animated video game since Disney's Aladdin on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
This is, literally, my second most wanted game on the console after SMM2. I absolutely adored this game on PC with one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a videogame. If it comes with the expansion day one, well, a no brainer it is.
I’ll definitely take Cuphead on Switch.
The days of three hundred quid boxes under your telly are coming to an end. Microsoft is becoming a service that will eventually be accessible on Smart TVs and phones and laptops. That’s why they’re moving from the platform to the content on those platforms. Until that day comes, The Switch is the only mobile platform powerful enough at the moment to play some of these games.
Great news for XB fans who own a Switch, but frankly it doesn’t interest me as a Nintendo fan.
And don’t think Nintendo are going to pay the favour back in kind- they have a successful platform for their successful games.
A rumor, but I really hope so. I've been wanting to play this so badly, and putting it on Switch would be perfect for me.
@MrGawain This is about MS pushing their game pass service on as many platforms as they can and it makes the Switch more desirable to people who may not have gotten one otherwise if true.
This is one I'd love to get on the Switch, even more-so if they can make a physical release for it, it deserves it even on Xbox One.
Cup Head and Oni would be great, but, it's Rare Replay I really, really want.
I don't think Nintendo appearance on another console is that impossible. Maybe not whole games, but cameos? Why not.
And none of the rumors say that Halo/GoW/Forza are actually "physically" coming to switch either. It could just be a cloud service. It could also be an app that allows remote access to your Xbox One.
But there are some smaller games like cuphead and Ori that have everything to gain at being temporary xbox exclusive, then opening up to other platforms. For Rare Replay, I don't think Microsoft is losing much if they ever decide to port it, on the contrary, it's a win win.
Would love to play this, Ori and Below. Please please please
There is some big stuff afoot ... big stuff. I can feel it.
Of course people would assume Nintendo is putting games on Xbox. Which is an odd assumption since MS's biggest product is the most popular OS for PC's...
Can we try to NOT pretend that Microsoft has a say in this matter at all?
They don't own the game, they don't own the studio, and they don't own the IP.
Whether Cuphead comes to Switch has nothing at all to do with Nintendo and Microsoft working together, as apparently the deal on platform exclusivity ended half a year ago, and StudioMDHR are now free to do as they please.
@Timppis That's not bad game design. That's just you being too lazy to get good
It would be really awesome, if they release Goldeneye 007 with crossplay! That would make my day!
Zero interest on game pass, cloud services or cuphead, but would love being able to stream games to the switch from my XBox One.
I may actually play and finish final fantasy 13 trilogy and Lost Oddysey it this became a thing.
@Pod maybe you missed the article stating that Microsoft signed a lifetime console exclusive deal with them.
What if all this boils down to XBOX having a mobile device for streaming the XBOX catalog? That would blend even more into the whole "XBOX is a service" thing.
If true, I NEEEEEEEEED a physical edition, and it better not drop one frame below 24fps because that game is hard enough without stuttering.
Really conflicted on this.
On one hand, its strong identity as a living, breathing 1930s cartoon - with all the hand-drawn work it entails - in turn gave Xbox even more of its own, unique flavour of gaming, and settling for a lower resolution would only result in re-doing every sprite from scratch.
On the other, it's also one of the so-called "perfect fits for Switch", and not in an ironic way.
My Jenga tower of scepticism keeps having bricks pulled out of it. All of this sounds like BS, but the rumors are gaining some serious credibility.
Jeuxvideo.com are not "'suggesting", they are saying that's confirmed
They have 100% faith on their sources, but eh, I'm not used to them taking their sources that seriously, they said they had all the guarantees and stuff, but except them nobody else know that
So even if they say this is coming and this is true, I'll still take that with a grain of salt
@Abeedo
No. The game having literally unwinnable situations within some levels is bad game design even if you are awarded quickly a retry.
This all sounds very manageable to me.
xCloud app will have a small portion of Gamepass games playable - via streaming - on the Switch, for probably $10 per month. Nintendo will likely get $1 of that for their trouble.
FYI Xbox accounts are already a thing on the Switch, you need one for Minecraft Cross-play, so that hurdle has already been jumped.
I don't see any reason for Nintendo games on Xbox, Xbox fans wouldn't buy them anyway. Maybe the mobile app games, those are already 3rd party anyway. Maybe in 20 years when Nintendo creates it's own streaming service.
Gamepass and xCloud can easily coexist side by side on Switch and Xbox 2. Streaming on Switch will get you 720p and stereo, X2 games will be 4k w/ Dolby Atmos sound. You're basically looking at a home and portable pairing, neither negates the other. And streaming limits Switch game usage, some people just don't like rentals, they want to own the game, even if in digital form.
Edit - laws change, my mistake
Jeuxvideo.com Is the main reference in France for the videogames, they're an official website, and so they almost never make articles about rumours, and their journalists are usually the first in France to hear about the latest news.
They seem pretty sure of what they're saying, so even if we can't confirm it yet, that's a huge step toward it being true. I mean, at least that there will be a collaboration of any sort.
In the article they've said that Ori and Cuphead will come as standard game on the eshop, plus an other from the trio Forza/Halo/GoW, and maybe the game pass too
@Tharsman
I certainly missed where the article stated that they have this information from.
The game has 2-player co-op. The Switch has 2 JoyCon. Perfect for tabletop play. Cuphead is red and Mugman is blue. Red and blue are probably the most common JoyCon pair. It's cartoony with platforming elements. It lends itself well to small burst of play time. This game is perfect for Switch.
@Timppis There is no unwinnable situations, or else no pro could do consistently the game with the 1HP only mode.
It's ok if it's not your cup(head) of tea but that does not makes it bad design.
Of all of Microsoft's properties, Cuphead would be the most welcome.
This game is crazy. It's definitely the best 2D platformer from recent years.
Regardless I'm not sure if I'll double dip if it ever comes to switch. I don't feel like putting myself through literal hell again to finish the game xD
if they do this, i prolly die before launch... that's how much I want/ don't think it'll get over to the switch...
Cuphead is amazing ! But Xbox number 1 IP is ori ! And it would be most welcome on switch
I can see a Nintendo/MS ‘meeting of minds’ here. This could open up opportunities to collaborate on hardware; there could be mergers and some overlap with IP.
I think we’ll see Banjo on Switch.
I think MS want to get their games on anything big in the handheld space and that rather than take the plunge when their own home console business is at best (the west) in third place and at worst (the orient) circling the drain. I think MS will once again try to buy Nintendo. Or try to become a major shareholder.
@Rafke I thought that was the case. My original comment said 60fps instead of 24fps, but I edited it because I couldn't remember for sure lol.
I'm praying this is true!! Literally the only reason I want an Xbox is Cuphead.
@Kamalen
I've played through the game. It was on many parts a good game. But it does have situations where the random patterns simply fail to give you a possibility, no matter how gud you git.
It's frustrating and this is not something that is commonly unknown or not discussed.
WOW!... that would be amazing. Developers (and console gamers) need to forget this "hardware" driven mentality. It is about having tons of good software to pick from - should not matter what hardware is running it.
Just like on PC. Nobody cares if you running an MSI or EVGA GPU. They make software to run on all hardware.
Bring Gears of War 5, Crimson Dragon 2, Forza (any) and Halo WARS 3 to Switch!.
This would be awesome! I've been interested in playing Cuphead for a while now, but since I don't own an Xbox and my laptop would probably implode trying to play it, I'd love to play it on Switch. It's a grossly overused phrase, but Cuphead really would be perfect for Switch! Getting other Xbox games on Switch via streaming or other means would also be amazing.
Halo Infinite on Switch would be absolutely A-MA-ZING incredible happy joyousness.
Really convenient that this rumour surfaced just after that other rumour.
Taken yesterday from the twitter account of Hugues Ouvrard (Head of Microsoft France).
Translation :
I have the feeling that my Twitter account will heat tomorrow.
Nintendo has a long connection to Fleischer animation with Donkey Kong originally intended to be a Popeye game (and Fleischer did some surreal work on the Popeye animated shorts). It would be a perfect coming home moment for the game...
Some gameplay critiques of Cuphead are popping up here, though... I think people were under the wrong impression that it was intended to be a Mario style platformer. It's not. The best corollary is Punchout! where you have to learn timing, rhythm, and tells to win battles.
One way or another, more Xbox content is coming to the Switch, I'm sure of that.
They didn't even confirm that, and I already want Cuphead and Mugman for Super Smash Bros.
I was in love with this game since I first set eyes on it. It might be a bit difficult for me, but I'd be up for it.
I'm still waiting for that physical copy of Cuphead.
Well, that kind of puts a different spin on "lifetime exclusivity". I guess that if games featuring what were once mascots for other systems are now on a Nintendo platform (Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, even Katamari was once Playstation only), then there's an expiration date on pretty much any exclusive deals. Cuphead was the sole reason I gave in a got an Xbox One, but I still wouldn't mind adding it to the Switch. As long as it ran without a hitch. Although right now I'm still more interested in an update as to what's happening with the "Last Course" DLC. All we've been told is "2019". Of course, there was a time when they were promising the original game in what turned out to be a couple YEARS early.
As for some of the comments here about Cuphead having "unwinnable" situations, yes, it's true there are times when the variables make a given run through impossible. But that's not unique to Cuphead. There's plenty of games where you could get backed into a corner one time through, then it all lines up perfectly the next. It might seem a little sloppy, but those are also some of the best victories in game playing when the combination of skill and luck come together for a win.
Would be awesome to have, I don't want a close to 0% game on my trophy list, and it seems like the game would be better portable!
@ilikeike Depends. If it is just a small Chromebook, then maybe. But Cuphead is a game with pretty low system requirements.
I want sunset overdrive on the switch
Cuphead is a fantastic game and beating it one of my best achievements in gaming. Don't be fooled by the wonderful animation, this game is brutally hard whilst Ori is probably the best Metroidvania I've played this generation
THQ Nordic is going to bring Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch.

@Timppis millennials discover bullet hell games
@MrGawain this kind of attitude is why Nintendo struggles to be the juggernaut it once was. It permeates the fans and the company, because nothing is as good as Nintendo, even though they built themselves on their games AND third party franchises.
@Timppis git gud
@Kmno Yup, personal taste is a terrible thing. We should just all do what all the cool kids are doing.
I stopped playing Cuphead after getting to the second island for some odd reason. I don't know why I stopped, but I've been hoping a Switch version would happen, Microsoft and Nintendo seem to be allies at this point. lol
If this is true, hopefully Nintendo will give Microsoft's system some of their games. I don't have an Xbox, but still...
@Timppis You literally just described basically every shmup style game though. It's about pattern recognition, memorization, and some luck of the draw. Overrated is really in the eye of the beholder, but if most people seem to be on the other side of a debate from you (and considering it's 88 Metacritic score most are), then it's probably not them that's wrong...
@fafonio
I played through Battletoads and Turtles before millenials (or probably you) were even a word.
@Webheadd
I am. Very.
@RalphWiggum777
Game is hailed for many reasons, mostly of course because of the fantastic artstyle. It doesn't take away from the fact that it's got a lot of design flaws. Yes, overrated is exactly my own personal opinion. Thus overrated as in many people praise it for being something good, which I clearly differentiate with.
I would love RareReplay and any amount of Rareware games on the Switch! Imagine portable Banjo and Kazooie!!
@Timppis right, and my point was what are the odds it's really overrated or that your opinion is just wrong compared to the vast majority? I'd be the latter is more likely.
@RalphWiggum777
Considering that I have been very rarely wrong. I'd go with me.
Cuphead is overrated. Cool art style, absolutely unforgiving difficulty.
If I can get cross platform ownership on XBOX/Switch, that would be super rad, especially game saves. Microsoft's desperation has resulted in some sweetness.
Hope it’s true, Cup head is the xbone exclusive I really want.
I can state without a doubt that Cuphead will be too difficult for my ageing game skills. But it sure looks pretty.
Microsoft selling software on a Switch has nothing to do with partnering Nintendo. As Microsoft move to gaming as a service, they want maximum hands on joysticks.
Nintendo won’t put their games on other consoles, unless they decide to get out of the hardware business (which I hope never happens)
I adore the look of Cuphead but I just know I wouldn't enjoy the game all that much. An endless boss rush is not my thing. But if they bring Ori to switch I'd eat that up, that's the 1 game that kind of makes me regret skipping Xbox this gen.
I love the look of this game, but I've heard that it is brutally difficult to the point of being unenjoyable.
The difficulty of Cuphead is a draw for some people. You’re welcome to have your own take on it, but I do love it myself. You will die, and it will require pattern recognition and memorization to conquer it, as well as good reflexes. It’ll cheap shot you, but the fights are short enough and it doesn’t force you to repeat stages or anything for another attempt, or give you limited continues. Dying is okay, which, at least in my opinion, makes it fine for them to demand what they demand of you in Cuphead.
It isn’t a game for everyone, but that in no way makes it bad. It was one of my favorite games from 2017 easily.
Make some games for Nintendo and they will approve your app, that's how it goes.
MS probably has a hidden agenda, they knew that putting Cuphead into a portable console will turned it into a projectile with it's rage inducing mechanics. This is a strategy to destroy the Switches.
@Timppis My first console as a kid was a Colleco Vision, quickly followed by NES.
@Webheadd
Good. Maybe then you shouldn't go throwing out labels like millenial so fast?
@RalphWiggum777
who cares? its his opinion. He's not quoting a Wikipedia page. Lol, just saying. He can think it's overrated, and people will probably disagree. But, he still gets to think it.
@Timppis those aren’t bullet hell games ... thanks for proving my “millennial discovers bullet hell games”
And no, wrong, I am from that generation too.
@fafonio
I know that. Compared to those bullet hell games of today are piece of cake. If you had any sort of idea of video gaming history you might be aware of that.
There's a geek fight brewing up there!!!!
Wasn't project rain a good foot in the door for what's happening now? I was hyped for that as I saw they had Cuphead running flawlessly on it, along with some other titles. Seems inevitable with microsofts failing from xbox that they would properly tap into Nintendo's market since that was the main one mentioned in PR.
Every Halo game other than 1 and 2 were great in my opinion, so would be strange but awesome to play those portable...
And of course the remastered Banjo games. They seem very likely, at least.
@Timppis what does that have to do with your initial point of bad design because it’s “too hard”?
You put examples like Battletoads, which, in your logic, would be terrible design because the motorbike level is really hard ... and then complain about memorizing patterns in Cuphead?
Moot point much? Millennial discovers logic.
I rest my case.
@fafonio
Maybe instead of looking at the world from your high horse you should have actually read what I wrote. I never criticized the difficulty of Cuphead. I criticized the portions of the game where the difficulty isn't due to learning curve or pattern recognition but of randomness.
Ooohh... So basically you made your entire case on the fact that you didn't even understand what was talked about, or what the analogies were or what actually was on the table at all.
@Timppis you criticized a game because of the high difficulty made out of randomness?
Basically you’re against 90% out of all the games out there.
One thing is that you don’t like the game or are pretty bad at it and another thing it’s that it’s “bad design” according to you.
Stop complaining and git gud.
@fafonio
You are still about a mile from the actual point and frankly you are just getting further and further away from it.
It's a skill based platformer that is meant to be difficult. It was designed to be that way. Having parts of the game where skill and pattern are reduced having exactly zero effect is bad design.
There are very very very very few games where there are no design flaws. Having this sort of thing in this sort of game is a big deal.
You are basically now grasping at any straws that your keyboard can produce. Just let it go and let yourself drown into the L that you took.
@Timppis Obviously it is unwinnable. You haven't gotten good yet
@Timppis you know what? I’m a bit tired of internet negativity. Sorry for sharing you that part of my day and starting the discussion like a douche, honestly accept my apology. Sorry that you didn’t like the game. It’s no use to fight over something that’s supposed to be made for having fun.
Hope you have a great weekend and hope to see you around here and next time discuss with a more positive outcome.
Honest comment man, no sarcasm.
@fafonio
No harm done and it takes two to tango.
You are absolutely right in what you say about arguing over something like this. Well said.
Hopefully you too have a great weekend and good games to play. Personally I'll be playing FFIX and watching Katowice CS GO majors.
@Abeedo
Played through it.
I believe it when I see it.
@Timppis when did I say anything about millennials??
@Timppis On expert?
