@liveswired yeah I can get most of that. I think I was also referring to hardware a lot as well - especially controller evolution, but I do get what your saying.
The leak does seem to be more likely with each passing day, but I still believe there will be a unknown aspect to the hardware to be revealed – that will be a gimmick of some sorts and gives people a reason to go Nintendo over other systems.
But then again, I'll admit, I'm guessing just like most of us. Anyway, all will be reveal in the next couple or two probably, with the thing available to buy in March or April as another guess.
@Banjo- Thanks, and yeah unfortunately they definitely come across as greedier and more commercial these days. Subscriptions for games we've already paid for 3 times before, and they think giving screensavers and digital avatars is a generous rewards program! To be honest they come across as the least 'giving' company in gaming, and they kinda always were misers, despite the good point about the company.
@liveswired You make some strong points about the user-base situation. And I agree playing it safe works in some situations, but doesn't pay-off in many.
We'll see – maybe it will just be a spec-bump and still be successful, but I'm sceptical about both parts of that.
Regarding **'Nintendo didn't really 'innovate' ... before then they made traditional hardware'** I'm not sure I can fully agree with that – maybe in part. Most were incredibly innovative:
NES was the first console to use a D-pad, as well as mainstreaming in-game save progress, popularised interchangeable carts, and lightguns.
SNES introduced Mode 7, and the Super FX – Mario Kart, F-zero and later Star-Fox blew our minds! Effects like parallax 'mist' in LttPs lostwoods and its scaling Mode 7 map where mind-boggling. It was a huge leap in graphics and sound capabilities for the time, and the controller was a good step forward.
The N64 taught the world how 3D Platformers & Action RPG could work and control. Before that, we had no idea how it could be done! - it was seemingly miraculous they figured it out. Yes, 3D platformers came before the N64, but with an analog stick in a mainstream home console, it's hard to describe its impact unless you'd gone from the SNES to the N64 yourself. To me the N64 was the biggest leap in a generation for 'actual gameplay experience', that gaming will ever see – I'm not exaggerating at all. Even VR doesn't change things as much.
And all people tend to say about the N64 now is that the stick wasn't that great. It breaks my heart! That controller was, again, at the time, a total dream to use. I get giddy thinking of playing Pilotwings or later releases like Rogue Squadron on that controller. And Star Fox 64 introduced the world to rumble.
I owned a PSX a year before the N64 (Japan import) – it had GREAT 3D titles like Ridge Racer, Wipeout and Tekken early on – but non controlled in 3D in the mind-blowing new way Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 did – later, OoT. PS didn't introduce analogs & rumble until a year later, and didn't really use the sticks effectively for a while. The N64 was genuinely revolutionary - people forget! I even owned an Atari Jaguar and it had nothing on the N64 (except Tempest 2000!)
Gameboy, and the Gameboy Advance where also huge leaps to what was around then. Sure the Game Gear was incredible one year after the GB. But whereas I took my GB everywhere and played it tons, the GG was too expensive to buy batteries for, was un-pocketable, and had a much smaller library. The GB was simpler, but it was the first practically-viable handheld with interchangeable games. Before that we just had G&W – great, but limited in ways the GB was not.
I'd say the only Nintendo system pre-DS that wasn't **particularly** innovative was the Gamecube, despite how fondly we like that console and it's beautiful games.
But generally, yeah Nintendo are always innovating, and I'll be surprised when that stops and we just get spec bumps per-generation.
But times change, and maybe their passion for innovation will wane.
If this is real, then I'd say it's really not a good sign for Nintendo's next 5 or so years at all.
It's way, way too safe, too similar, and Nintendo likes to innovate too much – and give us new hardware inventiveness every generation. This kind of device is no longer unique, in fact it's become as common as muck - and would have little distinguishing it over tons of portable PCs that now exist and keep coming every month.
Sure it'd still have the joy-con thing – but many of us kinda hated the ergonomic of those things and use third party alternatives – so I'd expect them to be a least be more hand-ergonomic this time.
If this is it, no one will be interested after a few year max – because in essence they've had the same thing for 8 years already. This is a safe and boring 'bigger version'. I don't believe it – OR there will be an additional unique aspect to it that is as yet un-leaked.
A 'Pro' version isn't interesting enough as - proved multiple times by Sony.
Nintendo don't just do, basically, the same thing after 8 years. That's what other tech companies do. **Nintendo, first and foremost** have been very public that they are not much interested in tech for tech sake – they always say they want to give use new ways to play in interviews.
Sure, I want a more powerful, backwards compatible Switch so I can bring forwards over 200+ digital games. I personally don't want it bigger or heavier at all – but whatever – sign o' the times that people want that. But It'll be more than just this, or I'll eat my hat as well. I don't buy this as the full story of the hardware. It's at least in part false.
A shame indeed - with them having a finished and well respected game that was perfectly fine in its original form, they really, really should have planned a release in the Switch eShop’s early years. At that time a good indie release was still somewhat rare. Not the case now, and for every good indie we choose to buy and play, 20 more release that we are forced to ignore. We are in a world of plenty like never before - and that has both positive and negative aspects to it.
I just don't want blurry visuals anymore, and want native resolution games over FPS everyday of the week.
I'm really shocked and disappointed that so many people prioritise FPS over visuals. If a game looks terrible, why would I care if it's 6fps? I'd go and play something that doesn't look like a dogs bottom.
Blurry sub-resolution games are the real tragedy of modern gaming – not stable 30fps.
@batmanbud2 Ha – yeah nearly – I'd argue there are still a good few to come over yet (the NES Remix games for instance), but yes we've been lucky with the ports.
Super Mario 3D Land, then New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
And yes, I've played most of the 'big ones' that normal come out on top. To me I prioritise fun and actual inventive platforming – over things like exploration and (looking at you Odyssey) costumes.
Buuuut, I haven't yet played Wonder despite owning it.
Another vote for being able to buy a rom and a digital Manual. Like Goodboy Galaxy, I want to play on my Gameboy micro, and IPS modded GBA OG - but I'm not a box collector anymore.
I've never understood people pulling 'Super Mario 3D Land' to a lower rating – that game is sooooo much fun - and other than graphic fidelity, I don't think World is 'better' - and I love World.
Except maybe those 'Shadow Mario' levels - those are BS.
@Deljo your missing the point my friend - I was sharing an example of enjoying emulation WITHOUT piracy. Not judging others, but for me I’m actively avoiding piracy. So again, no I wouldn’t fill up my card with a ‘set’. I happen to own the Mega Drive collection on Steam (very cheap), and a SNES mini - so that covers a lot of the best games on those systems - which proves you can get a decent amount of games legitimately.
@Preposterous Cool thanks, and that makes sense. I do use emulators and retro handhelds myself – but I'm very, very careful to not steal – it's strictly for games I physically own, or have bought a digital copy of (or on occasion a game I've borrowed from a family or friend). It's not ideal because so many old games are unavailable for legitimate purchases – and even Nintendo doesn't make it easy to play games you own from the past (except one generation maybe) - but I don't use, or agree with using the shortcomings of the industry as an excuse to steal. But it must be said, much as I love Nintendo games, I think they are one of the greediest and most miserly entertainment-based companies out there – and rarely give much back to their customers – so that doesn't help.
@Preposterous Sorry, I'm not sure I understand; could you explain why you think emulator developers are working against game preservation please? Just trying to understand.
@-wc- Might be me on Reddit too – maybe I need to take a chill-pill on talking about them. I did put a review up on reddit about a couple months ago. I just really like them compared to the standard joy-con I guess.
But to balance things up @NeonPizza a few comments up clearly disliked a fair bit about them. I would probably have preferred quieter membrane buttons myself – but none of the things NeonPizza mentioned bothered me particularly. The best conclusion is we are all different people and no one product suits us all
@ParadoxFawkes Binboks (which I've never heard of before, but just looked up) look like they are differently branded/named versions on the NYXI Hyperions - exactly the same basically.
The Mobapad HDs are quite different, including the shape of the backs) and have HD Rumble. But roughly speaking yes, they are the same kind of product.
@mlt The NYXI Hyperion (Pro version) looks good – probably the second best option out there, and has RGB lighting if that's your disco, and comes with a charging 'bridge' that I wish came with the Mobapad – but it also has no HD Rumble or NFC. If it wasn't for HD Rumble and the xbox-like transparent glossy face-buttons (which I've never liked) I'd be tempted by the Hyperion Pro version. I like that everthing is matte on the Modapad.
Regarding the D-pad it is interchangeable and comes with an excellent 'normal' d-pad - as well as a xbox-elite style disc thingy. That's probably what you saw. For some games it's actually quite good as an option – but the standard D-pad stays in mine full-time, and is very good. They did themselves a marketing disservice showing that disc thing in photos. Maybe try to find photos with the normal d-pad in place.
The only caution would be if you really don't like very clicky buttons – because the Mobapad use mechanical buttons that are similar to mouse clicks. I find them to be just fine – even though I generally prefer soft membrane style buttons (like on the Switch Lite, DS Lite and OG GBA).
I just think this bulky Nitro-Deck idea is a flawed design in general – and a joke compared to a new option out there – I have a Mobapad M6 HD set of grip Joy-con alternatives.
Best purchase for my Switch OLED I've made (outside of games). They have Hall Sticks, Giro, NFC, HD Rumble, Marcos, are dockable, they sleep from wake, have wireless use, mechanical buttons etc... Basically everything the official controllers have but with much, much better buttons, sticks and ergonomics.
It makes it feel like a new generation device (Like a high-end AyaNeo or something). And they are the only third-party Joy-con replacements that offer true HD Rumble.
Honestly @Liam_Doolan NintendoLife should do a feature on the Mobapad M6 HDs. And I'm just a player btw – I just think these are what we needed 7 years ago and people need to know very high-end 'joy-con' exist now.
@DiamondCore Do you think your comment could do with a little edit – because it doesn't actually say anything (it's not a complete sentence). I'm not criticising, but since it's the first comment you might want it to say whatever it was you actually wanted it to say?
I thought it was kinda excellent – it's rare for me to have at least an interest in almost every game shown. I genuinely want to play a lot on the reel.
And there was a blissful lack of farming sims (remember THAT direct?!) and dare I say, JRPGs (which I think as many people dislike as like).
Been waiting for this one since good 3D dogfighters are rare on Switch (or anywhere) – hope it runs better than it looks atm though, otherwise it might need to go on the growing 'one to play on a different platform' list.
I don't understand why there are some 1/10 or 2/10 votes on this poll? I don't think even subjectively anyone could look the creators of this game in the face and justify calling it less that a 5/10 minimum – maybe 4 if your a pretty harsh critic. It's clearly had time, effort and a touch of care put into it don't you think?
A 1/10 game has to be a real soulless, effortless, shamefully and likely broken mess of a 'game' right? I might look to see if NL has ever given a 1/10 – it'd be interesting.
Also: Apologises to the mods – I wrote this a little carelessly first time around.
I wish this was the mindset every developer would start their new game with. Imagine if a game came out now that didn't fit any of the established genres at all. That would be something.
@OldGamer999 Well, since you bring up our impermanence, I guess we should chill about all this really (telling myself). I'll preserve what I can for now, so that I can enjoy the games I've got for who-knows-ho-long, and maybe my gamer Nieces' will want my eShop account when I'm gone. But in general I guess it's helpful to remember it'll all disappear – as will Ubisoft and all it's employees. That way we can just enjoy playing games more than collecting them. Just curious btw – with you tag – are you happy to say roughly your age? I always find it reassuring that oldies still enjoy this articular pastime.
@OldGamer999 Yeah but a digital library is still one you own. Subscription means they can change the catalog at any time. Like with Netflix etc, it's fine and has a place – but there are some films I want to be available to watch without being at the mercy of a corporations tickle and fancy – or changes in regional availability. I'm an old gamer too at nearly 50 – but I'm somewhere in the middle of this.
On one hand I like digital very much and no longer wish to have a wall of plastic boxes gathering dust, but taking Nintendo as an example, I've many, many digital games from older Systems that I've paid good money for, but not only are they often absent from the latest console, if you do wish to replay them your expected to pay a subscription. I must own Super Metroid about four times over. The way games companies expect you to abandon your library each time there is a new generation console has basically become tantamount to stealing imo. Really, I'm sick of it, and I'm taking matters into my own hands. I'm going to emulation the heck out of all my digital Switch games in the future (probably on a SteamDeck 2 or whatever, Since at least Steam doesn't do the one generation then it's gone BS), because I can't trust first-party companies with my many purchases. Apple even just wipes them from the App Store whenever they feel like it. So anyway, I'll balance the new way with a slice of the old.
Looks really, really excellent with an art-style like a slight hand-painted Metroid Dread.
However the full price for this doesn't look right to me personally – and since it's Ubisoft we all know there will be a good sale on it in 3 months or less.
@Ironcore Shmups are really, really common on the Switch though, whereas Rogue Squadron/Star Fox-like 3D dogfighting games are still a very rare treat for the gaming community. I'm sorry it's not for you but thank goodness it's not another shmup to be honest. It looks very good too.
@sketchturner 'But the point still stands that the gaming community at large can do incredible feats to enhance games through optimization and mods.'
Agreed - and I'd say we have (in general) in these recent years seen a lot of lazy and questionable optimisations, alongside the greats. And even some of the so called greats, like Doom 2006 for instance, I don't personally like the way the have optimised - with super blurry visuals to mask lower details.
I'd FAR rather they lower the effects, details and textures in preference to native-sharpness visuals. I can't stand soft visuals, and I don't understand modern devs taking that route so much - I hope the trend ends asap.
This is quite a gross misunderstanding of the situation you have I'm afraid. The Devs cannot use the tools and overclocks that MGV can. All commercial handhelds by companies like Nintendo and Sony are under-clocked to a 'safe margin' and are probably also required too do so to be internationally saleable. These figures are just a proof of concept of what the hardware is fully capable of, IF the hardware was fully available to devs for commercial releases.
But it is not available to them. So in this case this isn't about optimisation - or the lack of.
I couldn't care less if we never saw a COD game ever again. I hope it happened for the fans however, but I like my wars to be fantasy based thank you.
I've been a Nintendo and Playstation gamer for a long time, and more recently an Xbox Series S enjoyer. On all those platforms, and over decades, COD has never appealed to me really if I'm honest. I guess I'm a bit more Nintendo than the rest, so he's a bit right.
Another detailed 2D platformer that is probably a better comparison than NL offerings, is DKC Tropical Freeze which is a whooping 6.6GB, which means...
it's simply hard to predict if one game will be 'bigger' than another in any sense beyond GBs.
It was pretty good. Wish we'd got something Star Fox, Donkey Kong 3D, Metroid Prime 2 and my main forever wish: Rogue Squadron HD Trilogy. Please may that happen one day.
@sleepinglion I mean, feeling you need to point out that you bought a legit copy of ToTK says a lot about the current situation. And then calling people pious because they don't like stealing is a bit much if you don't mind me saying. Yes, as you say, many of us have been down that road ourselves - especial when younger - but I think we all know, at the back of our minds, it's still not exactly a good thing to do, and I think it's ok to acknowledge that - for ourselves - not judging others. I think checking we are not stepping outside our own set boundaries just makes us feel a bit better about ourselves. If that's pious so be it.
But then blaming the state of Nintendo's hardware as the reason!? That's just one of many excuses people might give themselves. Emulation has come on in ways nobody expected in the last, say 7 years or so. If Nintendo hardware isn't good enough for people, just put your Switch in a drawer, and jump ship until Nintendo's new console shows up.
I'd love a HD Collection of ALL the First Party IP G&W Games for Switch. Particularly I'd love to relive Donkey Kong 1 and Donkey Kong 2 Double Screens, and Donkey Kong JR (single screen). The latter of which I consider to be the finest of all G&W titles.
I don't generally pay much attention to these charts but when you realise that in the top 40 UK games, 20 are Switch exclusives (almost entirely first-party at that) and then an extra 10 have Switch versions available - then that's noteworthy!!
So 6 years! in and 3/4 of the games in a random week the top 40 are on Nintendo's hybrid console. And more-than-likely those 10 non-exclusive games have most sales on Switch too.
Conclusion: Nintendo Power indeed, and the Switch is far from on it's last legs.
Other observations are that you only need a Playstation for 2 of these games (and not even that if you have a Steam-deck or PC). I have an Xbox SS for the only other two games that interest me: Jedi and Hogwarts.

Cool idea! They could have a bunch of 'Continent like-zones' for the sequel each with regional mischievous animals.
As you say Raccoons for North America
Meerkats for Africa,
Monkeys or Red Panda for Asia,
Macaws or Toucans for South American
Wombats for Australia
etc... Something like that.

Re: New And Improved Nitro Deck+ Announced For Switch, Pre-Orders Live
Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase?
@DiamondCore Do you think your comment could do with a little edit – because it doesn't actually say anything (it's not a complete sentence). I'm not criticising, but since it's the first comment you might want it to say whatever it was you actually wanted it to say?
Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase?
I thought it was kinda excellent – it's rare for me to have at least an interest in almost every game shown. I genuinely want to play a lot on the reel.
And there was a blissful lack of farming sims (remember THAT direct?!) and dare I say, JRPGs (which I think as many people dislike as like).
Just actually fun looking games.
Re: Exclusive: Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron Blasts Off On Switch Next Month
Been waiting for this one since good 3D dogfighters are rare on Switch (or anywhere) – hope it runs better than it looks atm though, otherwise it might need to go on the growing 'one to play on a different platform' list.
Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mario vs. Donkey Kong?
Re: Feature: "We’ve Tried To Do Something Very Different" - Rivalry & Drama In Arcade Racer 'New Star GP'
'we’ve tried to do something very different'
I wish this was the mindset every developer would start their new game with. Imagine if a game came out now that didn't fit any of the established genres at all. That would be something.
This game looks great too.
Re: Nintendo Highlights New Stages In Mario Vs. Donkey Kong Switch
@_Figo_ They could release them as free/ / paid DLC later. They showed Captain Toad support like that.
Re: Golfinite Tees Off On Switch Next Month With Some OG Mario Golf-Style Putting
Looks lovely – except it feels like it needs some visible players for a bit of character.
Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss
@OldGamer999 Yeah that pretty much me too.
Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss
Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss
Re: Review: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, And 2024's First Must-Play
@Captain_Toad I see what you did there
Re: Review: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown (Switch) - Slick, Stylish, And 2024's First Must-Play
Looks really, really excellent with an art-style like a slight hand-painted Metroid Dread.
However the full price for this doesn't look right to me personally – and since it's Ubisoft we all know there will be a good sale on it in 3 months or less.
Re: Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron Is An Aerial Assault On The Senses
@Ironcore Shmups are really, really common on the Switch though, whereas Rogue Squadron/Star Fox-like 3D dogfighting games are still a very rare treat for the gaming community. I'm sorry it's not for you but thank goodness it's not another shmup to be honest. It looks very good too.
Re: Video: Here's A Look At Red Dead Redemption Running At 60FPS On Switch
Re: Video: Here's A Look At Red Dead Redemption Running At 60FPS On Switch
@sketchturner @blindsquarel
Re: PlayStation Boss Doesn't Think Call Of Duty Appeals To Nintendo's Core Audience
Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Estimated File Size Is Revealed On Switch eShop
Another detailed 2D platformer that is probably a better comparison than NL offerings, is DKC Tropical Freeze which is a whooping 6.6GB, which means...
it's simply hard to predict if one game will be 'bigger' than another in any sense beyond GBs.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?
It was pretty good. Wish we'd got something Star Fox, Donkey Kong 3D, Metroid Prime 2 and my main forever wish: Rogue Squadron HD Trilogy. Please may that happen one day.
Re: Poll: Are You Still Playing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?
Where is the tick box for 'What a stupid poll question this is'
It's a game with near infinite playability and it's been out for a month. Most people likely did not day one purchase either.
Re: Popular Switch Piracy Subreddit Promoting Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Downloads Banned
@sleepinglion cool beans buddy.
Re: Popular Switch Piracy Subreddit Promoting Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Downloads Banned
Re: Soapbox: Modern Zelda Bosses Are Getting Harder, But They're Nothing Compared To The Oldies
I don't know about bosses, but I never felt I mastered Lynels in BotW.
Re: The Nitro Deck Is A Stunning Switch Controller Grip Promising "Zero Stick Drift"
Looks generally good - but why shiny face buttons. Always hated that on controllers. Matte buttons are soooo much nicer in the hand.
Re: Best LGBTQ+ Switch Games
Shovel Knight is missing.
Re: Soapbox: If Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Isn’t Switch’s Swan Song, It Really Should Be
but what about the upcoming Untitled Swan Game
Re: Soapbox: Game & Watch Still Scratches A Very Particular Itch, And I Need More
I'd love a HD Collection of ALL the First Party IP G&W Games for Switch. Particularly I'd love to relive Donkey Kong 1 and Donkey Kong 2 Double Screens, and Donkey Kong JR (single screen). The latter of which I consider to be the finest of all G&W titles.
Re: UK Charts: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Tumbles Out Of The Top Ten
