Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss

brunojenso

@OldGamer999 Well, since you bring up our impermanence, I guess we should chill about all this really (telling myself). I'll preserve what I can for now, so that I can enjoy the games I've got for who-knows-ho-long, and maybe my gamer Nieces' will want my eShop account when I'm gone. But in general I guess it's helpful to remember it'll all disappear – as will Ubisoft and all it's employees. That way we can just enjoy playing games more than collecting them. Just curious btw – with you tag – are you happy to say roughly your age? I always find it reassuring that oldies still enjoy this articular pastime.

Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss

brunojenso

@OldGamer999 Yeah but a digital library is still one you own. Subscription means they can change the catalog at any time. Like with Netflix etc, it's fine and has a place – but there are some films I want to be available to watch without being at the mercy of a corporations tickle and fancy – or changes in regional availability. I'm an old gamer too at nearly 50 – but I'm somewhere in the middle of this.

On one hand I like digital very much and no longer wish to have a wall of plastic boxes gathering dust, but taking Nintendo as an example, I've many, many digital games from older Systems that I've paid good money for, but not only are they often absent from the latest console, if you do wish to replay them your expected to pay a subscription. I must own Super Metroid about four times over. The way games companies expect you to abandon your library each time there is a new generation console has basically become tantamount to stealing imo. Really, I'm sick of it, and I'm taking matters into my own hands. I'm going to emulation the heck out of all my digital Switch games in the future (probably on a SteamDeck 2 or whatever, Since at least Steam doesn't do the one generation then it's gone BS), because I can't trust first-party companies with my many purchases. Apple even just wipes them from the App Store whenever they feel like it. So anyway, I'll balance the new way with a slice of the old.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At Red Dead Redemption Running At 60FPS On Switch

@sketchturner 'But the point still stands that the gaming community at large can do incredible feats to enhance games through optimization and mods.'

Agreed - and I'd say we have (in general) in these recent years seen a lot of lazy and questionable optimisations, alongside the greats. And even some of the so called greats, like Doom 2006 for instance, I don't personally like the way the have optimised - with super blurry visuals to mask lower details.

I'd FAR rather they lower the effects, details and textures in preference to native-sharpness visuals. I can't stand soft visuals, and I don't understand modern devs taking that route so much - I hope the trend ends asap.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At Red Dead Redemption Running At 60FPS On Switch

brunojenso

@sketchturner @blindsquarel

This is quite a gross misunderstanding of the situation you have I'm afraid. The Devs cannot use the tools and overclocks that MGV can. All commercial handhelds by companies like Nintendo and Sony are under-clocked to a 'safe margin' and are probably also required too do so to be internationally saleable. These figures are just a proof of concept of what the hardware is fully capable of, IF the hardware was fully available to devs for commercial releases.

But it is not available to them. So in this case this isn't about optimisation - or the lack of.

Re: PlayStation Boss Doesn't Think Call Of Duty Appeals To Nintendo's Core Audience

brunojenso

I couldn't care less if we never saw a COD game ever again. I hope it happened for the fans however, but I like my wars to be fantasy based thank you.

I've been a Nintendo and Playstation gamer for a long time, and more recently an Xbox Series S enjoyer. On all those platforms, and over decades, COD has never appealed to me really if I'm honest. I guess I'm a bit more Nintendo than the rest, so he's a bit right.

Re: Popular Switch Piracy Subreddit Promoting Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Downloads Banned

brunojenso

@sleepinglion I mean, feeling you need to point out that you bought a legit copy of ToTK says a lot about the current situation. And then calling people pious because they don't like stealing is a bit much if you don't mind me saying. Yes, as you say, many of us have been down that road ourselves - especial when younger - but I think we all know, at the back of our minds, it's still not exactly a good thing to do, and I think it's ok to acknowledge that - for ourselves - not judging others. I think checking we are not stepping outside our own set boundaries just makes us feel a bit better about ourselves. If that's pious so be it.

But then blaming the state of Nintendo's hardware as the reason!? That's just one of many excuses people might give themselves. Emulation has come on in ways nobody expected in the last, say 7 years or so. If Nintendo hardware isn't good enough for people, just put your Switch in a drawer, and jump ship until Nintendo's new console shows up.

Re: UK Charts: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Tumbles Out Of The Top Ten

brunojenso

I don't generally pay much attention to these charts but when you realise that in the top 40 UK games, 20 are Switch exclusives (almost entirely first-party at that) and then an extra 10 have Switch versions available - then that's noteworthy!!

So 6 years! in and 3/4 of the games in a random week the top 40 are on Nintendo's hybrid console. And more-than-likely those 10 non-exclusive games have most sales on Switch too.

Conclusion: Nintendo Power indeed, and the Switch is far from on it's last legs.

Other observations are that you only need a Playstation for 2 of these games (and not even that if you have a Steam-deck or PC). I have an Xbox SS for the only other two games that interest me: Jedi and Hogwarts.

Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Controller? Every Nintendo Pad Ranked

brunojenso

TL;DR Version: Gamecube is overrated, N64 controller was a gaming revolution.

Gamecube seems the fashionable favourite to choose these days but I think its just a go to answer now, rather than through experience. I call BS on that. I've owned every one of these bar one (NES) and owned them as the consoles where released, and I can't remember the GC controller really standing out.

I'd go N64, SNES, and then maybe the Wii Classic Controller - very underrated (not the pro).

The reason I'd put the N64 first is because that controller combined with Mario 64 was probably the most mind-blowing moment I remember in all my gaming history.

That game with that controller felt, and was, a literally gaming revolution at the time, and even too this day was probably the biggest leap forward in gaming. Nothing even close to that had been done before, and I just couldn't comprehend how good Mario's 3D movement felt. Magical. And now people just wine about how lose the analog felt when compared to modern standards and total miss what that controller represents.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Super Mario Bros. Movie, And They're All Over The Place

brunojenso

I'm keeping an open mind.

Sometimes critics expect too much from certain movies and not enough of others.

I suspect the latter here and the critics are putting on their wannabe-philosophers heads on, when they should be asking if its enjoyable or not. I don't expect depth from this one - but I expect a lot of feel good fun.

Saying all that, maybe it is (subjectively) bad and I won't like it either. Time will tell, and at least it doesn't have motion controls

Re: Nintendo Announces Super Mario Sale, Wave One Starts This Week (Europe)

brunojenso

@ATHFjman18 I know it's easy to conclude it's not worth the asking price since it's 'just a 2D platformer', but in terms of fun and inventive gameplay I'd go as far as to say this is the finest platformer (2D or 3D) ever made. I'd certainly rate it above the likes of Odyssey. Seriously, I would. If it's 33% off I wouldn't hesitate.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metroid Prime Remastered?

brunojenso

Give us a chance - the game is only just released. I'm just a couple of hours in so no way can I 'review' it.

However I'll say this - the atmosphere in this game is off the charts. And the graphics (of a remastered Gamecube game) have me more in awe of any modern AAA game I've tried recently.

The wow factor of a game is way more than the technical mastery, and in my opinion (so far) this has more graphical charm than stuff like Control and Elden Ring. And make stuff like the recent Pokemon look genuinely embarrassing.

It's taken a remaster of a 'retro' classic to get me excited about game graphics again!

I expect the game to be a 9.5 at a minimum based on what I've played so far. We NEED the other two releasing.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy Advance (GBA) Game Ranked

brunojenso

Regarding Super Circuit: 'Sure, the visual style has arguably aged worse than the SNES version'

Man I don't get that. It feels like a statement everyone's been making for years because that's the generally promoted opinion created by those who've never really played the games much.

I LOVE the look of GBA Mario Kart and think it visually stands up WAY better than the bland SNES original. I didn't love the look of the SNES game even when it was first released, even though me and my mates played battle mode endlessly. Years later the original does not look good to me. But I love everything about Super Circuit and have 3 Stared everything in the game. It was a great step forward from the original. Even the controls after you adjust to them are, I think, superior.

I have great familiarity with both games and given a choice would always choose to play the GBA every time.

Re: Quiz: Which Of These Games Is On Switch?

brunojenso

Actually the 'Her Story' one was utter BS too NintendoLife!

Either the game is on Switch, or it's not. So you didn't 'trick us', you were just plain wrong. A Spiritual Successor depends upon a game that is NOT IT, to be the spiritual successor OF. They have to be mutually exclusive. It is was the same game, how could it homage itself! Stupid NL. Stupid.

Re: Quiz: Which Of These Games Is On Switch?

brunojenso

The Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee one was BS NintendoLife. You flirted the original graphics and title - THAT game isn't NOT on Switch, the remake is.

So objectively that one was utter BS. Other than that - good quiz.

Re: This Latest Switch 'Rival' From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

brunojenso

@Serpenterror

I can find no evidence online of those early adopters getting a better machine. In fact I'd only heard the opposite, that due to some small hardware tweaks and especially software developments the Deck has only improved since release and new users are getting a far better experience now than over a year ago. Certainly I've never heard anything about actual different hardware specs.

Happy to be wrong but your literally the first person I've heard say this - and I've done a lot of reading up on it. Do you have sources please?

Re: This Latest Switch 'Rival' From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

brunojenso

@Serpenterror 'Developers aren’t doing anything to optimise games on the Deck either, it’s all Valve.'

They most certainly will if the SD significantly increases the user-base for those titles. The massive user-base of the Switch is the ONLY reason we ever got so many quality ports over the years.

And I can't see how the SD wont increase the 'PC gamer' user-base – I should imagine it already has – and dramatically. There are many Steam game owners who just don't like the keyboard, mouse and desk setups. And it's hard for the public to ignore the prices in Steam sales.

Re: This Latest Switch 'Rival' From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

brunojenso

@Goofonzo Nintendo is unlikely to produce a straight console again, especially one focus on tech stats

They have thrived on doing the unique, and are, at their heart, a creative toy company. Very, very different to Sony and Microsoft.

If they do I'd imagine it'll be because they want to split the home and portable market into two again.

I totally agree about backwards compatibility. I consider Nintendo to be basically criminals in the way they keep forcing us to pay for our classic titles again and again with Virtual Consoles and subscriptions. Our purchases should ALWAYS carry forward. Thats why I'm likely going to transport over to the Steam Deck/2 down the line. Steam titles come with you.

I may even put all my Digital Switch titles on the Steam Deck when it's powerful enough - finally get docked visuals and better in handheld mode. After all I legit paid for them titles. I've paid Nintendo for over 180 Digital titles now, and I'll be damn well finding a way to continue playing them on better hardware in the future - whether the Big N helps me or hinders me to do so.

Why should I lose those titles when my hardware fails or Nintendo decides to move on. That business model is soon not going to be acceptable to anyone going forward.

Re: This Latest Switch 'Rival' From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

brunojenso

The Steam Deck is a Switch Rival. (I'm not saying better - but it is a genuine rival) This is just an Android phone.

The number of good premium Android native games is woefully limited (and surprisingly so, after all these years) compared to the Switch library, The Steam library and in fairness, the iOS library.

This device will emulate like a champ, be a wonderful streamer and you'll find maybe three dozen Android games worth your effort - maybe!

That's hardly a Switch Rival is it.

Re: Review: Kukoos: Lost Pets - A Charming 3D Platformer Perfect For The Whole Family

brunojenso

I don't think I'm the only one buying significantly less non-first party Digital games for Switch these days. 'Significant performance problems on Switch' feels waaaay to common - and yet the games don't look significantly more advanced than what we saw in year 1-2 of the Switch's life. I'm not sure we can blame it on the hardware really. So many games seem poorly optimised atm, with even first-party stuff like Pokemon being a mess.

We do occasionally get rare port-gems like NieR:Automata but still. No wander digital sales are being lost to Steam-Deck more and more. AND with Steam you won't need to re-buy all your games on the Deck 2! I think Nintendo is going to need to make a few wise changes soon.
