Re: Apple Made More Profit From Games In 2019 Than Nintendo, Sony And Microsoft Combined

brunojenso

Whilst Apple is definitely rather rotten at it's core these days, lets not pretend Nintendo are particularly generous with it's business model.

Can you imagine what Nintendo would be like now if they completely dominated the games industry, with Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Google etc... being nothing but side-line underdogs. Like Apple they would be become intolerable.

It takes a special kind of management team and set of leaders to keep a company morally intact, and decent in conduct, after it becomes mega-successful. Some of the worlds greatest evils have been hidden behind the horrendous phrase 'It's just Business'

At the moment Microsoft is probably the most reasonable of the games companies, but lets not forget what a truly despicable company they were when Apple was the underdog.

All these companies need to improve their practices, ESPECIALLY when they are at the top of their game.

After-all lets not forget the best truth bomb in popular-culture:

**With great power comes great responsibility.**

Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow

brunojenso

'Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance are both older entries that are surpassed by later titles'

Having play all three extensively, I disagree and think this is too harsh a statement, considering all three are stellar titles.

I'd say Circle of the Moon is actually the strongest entry. And Harmony of Dissonance is equal to Aria of Sorrow in most respects and I thoroughly enjoyed 100%ing it very very much. Sure the music is a little weaker in that entry - but it's nowhere near as bad as some say. The actual musical arrangements in that game are probably the most adventurous.

Re: Tetris Effect: Connected Is Dropping Onto Nintendo Switch Soon

brunojenso

@citizen_zane Yeah, custom music is an area where Sony has always excelled. I remember even the PS1 could do it with the first WipEout game. You just swapped the disc to any CD you wanted after the game had loaded. It was brilliant to play WipEout to idk, Transvision Vamp maybe! I'm not sure I've seen it on any other non-Sony console actually.

But yes, Tetris Effect NEEDS to let you cut or change tracks you don't gel with. It'd be my favourite Tetris if I didn't have to listen to certain BS lyrics again and again.

Re: Mini Review: Spelunky - An Indie Icon And Roguelite Royalty, Finally On Switch

brunojenso

Been waiting for this since getting the Switch on it's first week! I've never played any game as much as Spelunky (on PC/Mac and mostly on Vita). A masterpiece. 10/10 Game.

The Switch and Spelunky is the perfect marriage, and until now the Switch library has had one (or two) enormous omission/s, but finally all is well.

@Gerald On what platform? Spelunky has never been on Switch before. There is a crap game called Spelunker though.

Re: Soapbox: The Term 'Indie' Is Losing Meaning, But Maybe That's A Positive Sign

brunojenso

I mean, really, how many good Indie games have there been:

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure, maybe Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb and at most a couple more.

Honestly I don't understand the fuss, I mean it's a cool franchise and all, but why is everyone going on about Indie games all the time these days!?

Move along people! There are other cool protagonists out there too!

Re: Spelunky 1 And 2 Listed For 26th August Release On Switch eShop

brunojenso

There will probably never be another game I'll put more time into than I have Spelunky HD 1, it's an amazing platformer with equal to, if not greater than, refined controls compared to ALL 2D Marios. Big statement I know. And for this reason Spelunky 2 coming to Switch practically scares me. It will be game-crack.

I still complete at least one Spelunky 1 Hell Run every month or so just to keep the skills, and my highest score is around $1,700,000. I really want to get a 2 million run someday.

Re: Tetris Effect: Connected Is Dropping Onto Nintendo Switch Soon

brunojenso

@AJB83 Yeah, most good game music doesn't make the mistake of being too vocal driven. Gaming generally requires repeated play of sections, areas, levels etc... If you have to hear a cheesy line over and over - not good. I'd have rather they used more minimal electronic stuff - Aphex Twin's softer tracks, Bonobo, Rival Consoles, Richie Hawtin, even Lamb kind of stuff where vocals are more subtle. As you can tell I'm rather out of date with my Artists, but there will be modern equivalents.

This game had some really great tracks, including some Nitin Sawhney like stuff, but also have some very 'talky' songs that thought they had something deep to say, but where actually complete shallow lyrically. That's what I struggled with. Still, no biggie, and I sure it'll have relatively mainstream success on Switch.

Re: Review: Axiom Verge 2 - A Fantastic Follow-Up To A Classic Metroidvania

brunojenso

I'm so up for this - what I've played of the first one so far on Vita has totally blown me away. The music is immense.

The originals graphics turned me away for ages - but when you actually play it an see how the gameplay, art and especially the music/sound come together – it's a wow moment that games rarely give me these days.

Re: Soapbox: Playdate Sold Out In 20 Minutes - Is It Time For A New Nintendo Handheld?

brunojenso

I consider the Switch and Switch lite to be unusually large handhelds. So I definitely have a strong interest in new truly pocketable console experiences - including the PlayDate.

However currently the PlayDate is about £185 to ship to the UK with the Unit and a Cover. That is a lot of money to pay for something arriving 'sometime in 2022!'

But as far as I'm concerned the Switch is not the even close to the be-all-end-all of handheld gaming. It's just one good option.

In the meantime I still play my Gameboy Micro A LOT.

Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Dread Be The Franchise's 'Awakening'?

brunojenso

Judging by the reaction to the Prime 4 logo, and now to Dread, I'd say that there is actually more excitement and anticipation for Metroid's reappearance than there was for Mario Odyssey, and I don't think I'm exaggerating.

So that means something right?

So even though we expect our new Mario game on a new console, and everyone buys it, I'd argue that after Zelda, Metroid IS the IP most Nintendo fans are excited about, not Mario!

So sales may go:
Mario, Zelda, Metroid unfortunately.

But I'd say love of a franchise goes:
Zelda, Metroid, Mario.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Football Games

@ThomasBW84

As a fellow Welsh man this made me laugh - although I'm not sure I feel as strongly as you about it:

'Some in our team would be tempted to make a comment on the return of the sport to its motherland, but as this humble scribe is Welsh he'd rather dip his head into a bucket of tarantulas.'

Re: Nintendo Plugs Its NSO Zelda Games Ahead Of Skyward Sword HD's Release

brunojenso

@Heavyarms55 I don't think there are many people defending NSO at this point. I'm certain Nintendo themselves gave us the impression a new system would be added each year at least – even if there was no 'official statement'.

It doesn't matter if the service is 'a bargain' at this point. The service is intended as a replacement for our beloved Virtual Console (which was extensive on Wii U and other past consoles).

So here we are with no way to play first party Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, N64 and others FOUR years into the consoles cycle. That's ridiculous.

From this point of view the service is a failure. So Nintendo either need to bulk out the service's past console offerings quickly or offer us another way to buy GB, GBA, N64 and Gamecube asap.

This will damage people's faith in the big N if it continues like this much longer. NSO is providing Nintendo with a MASSIVE regular stream of income that I guarantee will be significantly more than they got from the Virtual Console purchases. To not give us more systems at this point comes across as pure greed or laziness.

Re: Here's A Look At The Official Carry Case Releasing Alongside The Switch OLED

brunojenso

@Wilforce Maybe your right from the point of view of the majority of people. However I work in print design and I've long known that if you don't want people to see jaggy edges you need 300dpi general or 240dpi minimum - otherwise the print will show pixelation (unless it's large format and viewed from several feet away). It's exactly the same for screens although I'm sure you'll say otherwise. So yes the general public may not care, but if you do care about tech as many on the site do including myself, then it matters.

I find it hilarious that the general pubic want 450pii screens on their phones which is totally unnecessary, but when it comes to game handheld people don't care when it goes sub 240ppi - when they actually should care because the image WILL be compromised.

Re: Here's A Look At The Official Carry Case Releasing Alongside The Switch OLED

brunojenso

@SalvorHardin Sorry but that's mostly nonsense. Apples 'Retina Displays' have never been lower than around 264 ppi for any handheld devices. Only Apple laptops go as low as around 220ppi. I hold my Vita and my Switch at the same distance from my eyes. They are both the same category of device, and much smaller than something like an iPad so they definitely benefit from higher pixel density in the same way a phone does. The only thing you say that might be true is OLEDs 'looking' sharper due to less motion blur, but again based on personal direct experience of previous OLEDs this is the realm of legend.

I'm not saying this is a terrible display decision - but let's not pretend it is ideal either. It is a bit of a backward step - anyone who pretends different is drinking the cool-ade and burying their heads in the sand.

Re: Here's A Look At The Official Carry Case Releasing Alongside The Switch OLED

brunojenso

@Octane @Wilforce Yeah everyone seems to be ignoring it's the same pixels in a bigger area therefore a drop in fidelity will be there.

Switch Lite = 267 ppi
OG Switch = 237 ppi
Switch Oled = 221 ppi

So the new Switch has dropped in sharpness again. It's now almost exactly the ppi of the Vita. The Vita is nice and I love mine but the pixels are more noticeable than on my OG Switch or the excellent screen of the Lite. Maybe no one will care - but it is a downgrade. I expected them to put in a 1080p screen if they went to 7inches.

Also this is a bit heavier than the OG Switch - which is by far the heaviest portable I've ever owned. I wanted something lighter and definitely not heavier.

For these reasons, plus not really wowed by OLED having experienced it, I'm not really bothered about this. It's incremental at best.

Re: Nintendo Switch OLED Screen: Why Is OLED Better Than LCD?

brunojenso

@Slowdive @Rika_Yoshitake I've owned both Vita's and settled on the far more ergonomic, lighter and better looking Slim model. Too me OLED is no big deal and I don't really like the more saturated colour as they look less natural. I'm still the proud owner of an absolutely beautiful Neon Orange Vita Slim Japanese import and would never go back the clunky OG Vita. Anyway I'm not trying to be controversial and each to there own, but thought I'd share a different view on OLED. Having seen it, LED is fine for me.

Also, NL is playing it down here but the decrease in PPI on this model IS a notable downgrade and the 7" screen will be noticeably less sharp for it.
