Re: Video: Super Mario 3D Land Deserves to Be Remembered

brunojenso

It's a fantastic game with no 'but' at all and I'm delighted to hear people finally and repeatedly discussing the merits of this wonderful Mario adventure. It's just great great platforming without any fluff. It's high on my Mario games list - because that list is based on sheer fun - and 3D Land has that in spades.

Re: Genki: ShadowCast Kickstarter Ends With Almost $2 Million Raised

brunojenso

@RupeeClock Thanks mate - it's a no go then. However I'm glad to see people starting to recognise the market for this type of thing. Things like Mac screens are often the only screen in our bedrooms - I've always wanted to hook consoles to my Apple screens over the years.

But unfortunately there are a lot of idiots out there that don't have that case requirement themselves, so said fools dismiss other peoples interest in doing so with 'just get a TV bro...' type comments.

I hope they continue to improve these things.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 2D Mario Game?

brunojenso

Too be honest I prefer the first NSMB on DS to SMB3.

Both amazing tho, and SMB3 has aged with grace.

Probably Super Mario World is top – but I have learnt to appreciate the original SMB a lot recently

Re: M2 Has Updated Six Sega Ages Titles For Nintendo Switch

brunojenso

Look M2/Sega (as if you might be listening) - the only one you released that was remotely new or interesting was Virtua Racing, therefore I bought that - as well as Sonic AGAIN.

If you gave us NIGHTS, Daytona, Sega Rally, Sonic Adventure, the Panzer games, Vitua Cop, House of the Dead, Shenmue, Alien 3: The Gun... etc... we would have bought a ton of that stuff. Light gun games with a jon-con holder would be amazing on Switch).

Ya know, interesting titles... so any failing of profits is down to you pushing us to buy new versions of Genesis games AGAIN.

Re: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Will Feature Around 300 Playable Characters

brunojenso

@Yanina Grogo's a little s**t. That episode where he eats a ton of that Lizard lady's babies! And Mando was a totally useless Dad about it - just like 'Kids eh, what can you do'. What an a****** (Grogo not Mando). And before we get into 'aww. he's just a baby, he didn't understand' He's 50 years old, has VERY clear comprehension by the end of the show - he knew exactly what he was doing. Worse Star Wars character ever - cute sure, but a subtly evil little b*****

Re: Video: Ahead Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, We Discuss What Makes The Original So Special

brunojenso

@SortingHat Good to know the many factors and complications involved – we don't often think of these things, so thank you.

I'm sure the pressure to release it at the Switch launch was enormous – after all, I'd say the success of the Switch in those early months was almost entirely riding on the existence of that game.

I know I bought a Switch in its first week of release on the basis of that game. Without BOTW I'd have never been an early adopter like that.

Re: Video: Ahead Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, We Discuss What Makes The Original So Special

brunojenso

My main issues with BOTW was a lack of large caves (or nearly any caves at all), zero underwater exploration and that the bosses and shrines were incredibly same-y in look and style. And somehow because the exploration was kinda the main draw, beating Ganon was very anti-climatic.

But I'm still delighted to have played it and do agree it's a massive milestone in video gaming development. I'm hoping BOTW2 fixes all these issues and brings back some of the more creative diversity seen in some earlier Zelda titles.

Re: The Game Boy Lives On Once More As The Shapeshifter Closes In On Kickstarter Target

brunojenso

@Brumblescope Sounds sensible mate. Also @Lone_Beagle isn't wrong about Flash Cart issues too. I have a EZ Flash Omega and if you learn to work with it's quirks and limitations it's great (just reading the manual carefully basically), but the Krikzz flash cart is a better quality product - for more £. Even then these flash carts are not as good or convenient as the options built into modern emulators such as multi save-states - so don't dismiss something like a RG351p or the new Pocket Go S30 - all of which have their strengths and weaknesses - but these two I mention will do GBA great because they have 480x320 screens - exactly 4x the GBA's pixel count and the same aspect ratio (no black bars for GBA).

Just do some research - and maybe the Switch has GBA NSO around the corner too!

Re: The Game Boy Lives On Once More As The Shapeshifter Closes In On Kickstarter Target

brunojenso

@Lone_Beagle Yeah I totally agree about the cost and to my own expense I've learnt the hard way about how much the DIY route can cost - especially if you make mistakes as I did.

Not only do I agree but I'd go as far as to say buying a pre-modded eBay one is almost certainly going to be cheaper. The only way it's justifiable building your own is as a learning project where you get to customise exactly as you want and that is an opportunity to dabble with soldering etc...

I'm glad I DIY'd mine - I'm just not sure why I am

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch Wannabe Runs Cyberpunk 2077, Costs $700

brunojenso

@damienmcferran

You know, calling all these devices Switch-Style, Switch-Concept and Switch Wannabes is getting old and is poor journaling. These are simply handheld gaming systems - with non of the unique features that distinguish the Switch such as detachable controllers. How exactly are these devices more Switch-style than say Vita-style?

It's lazy writing. What we really have here is one of two new-generation powerful (and expensive) handheld PCs. Only the layout of the buttons is Switch-style - which is hardly enough. The Switch wasn't the first controller with offset analog sticks for example.

These are not 'copy-cat devices' and the Switch doesn't have some sort of monopoly on horizontal-layout handheld designs. I love my Switch, but there is nothing wrong with new devices having a similar look - move on.

Re: The Game Boy Lives On Once More As The Shapeshifter Closes In On Kickstarter Target

brunojenso

@Brumblescope I modded mine recently. It's not cheap and you can make mistakes. Here is my biggest advice: All the IPS kits out there give you 3M tape to attach the screen to the shell. NEVER DO THIS. It's the stupidest advice. If you ever want to change your shell again you will not be able to remove the screen without destroying it. Gluing it in is bloody stupid but they ALL tell you too. Instead use these 2 things from Retrosix and you'll have a completely reversible setup:

https://retrosix.co.uk/Game-Boy-Advance-IPS-Screen-Bracket-p201741204

https://retrosix.co.uk/Game-Boy-Advance-IPS-Screen-Dust-Guard-p249525592

Their IPS kit is too expensive - go to eBay and get one as low as £40. MAYBE use one of their shells - they are not as good as they say - but they are perfectly pre-trimmed for the IPS screen. Personally, and if you can find one in good condition, I'd use an original shell that I'd learn to trim myself off youtube. Their button's are great and I learnt to solder so I could do the 'clicky' shoulder button mod and the brightness control wires.

Re: The Game Boy Lives On Once More As The Shapeshifter Closes In On Kickstarter Target

brunojenso

@Brumblescope There are several good options, but nothing quite beats an IPS Screen modded original unit with your original games and a flash cart. For me that's due to the form factor and not having to concern yourself with emulation. I have a screen modded Indigo OG GBA with black buttons - it's an excellent marrying of the nostalgic model of my youth with a bit of modern flashiness.

Other good options are (in a rough order of best to 'worst':

Modded PS Vita Slim (I'm a believer the Slim is the far superior model despite what most say).
Modded PPSgo
Retroid Pocket 2
Gameboy Micro (I still have one and love it for occasional use).

To me a requirement is that it can display the pixel's perfectly and sharply. Strictly speaking that counts out the PSPgo but somehow it manages to scale GBA beautifully - and it's form factor is incredible as a 'true-pocketable'.

I've heard the RG351P is great for GBA too, and there are more options than these of course. I'd include the GBA SP which I've owned but using headphones is a big deal for me and Nintendo not including a port (without an adapter) was unforgivable - plus it is quite cramped for long play and my micro is better for short play.

If I could get one I'd consider the Analog Pocket IF it can be side-loaded or works with flash carts like the Everdrive - but Analog are being cagey with that info.

@Lone_Beagle I'm personal not a fan of the Macro mods. It uses the inferior DS Lite screen. Modern IPS screen are too good by comparison. Plus you have the black bars on all 4 sides due to the DS resolution and have to use half a DS UI for operation. Seems messy and the remaining clips for the clamshell just look weird. It's just not a GBA but half a DS - but that's just my view.

Re: Star Wars Video Games Join Forces Under Lucasfilm Games

brunojenso

@Krambo42 Let's hope so. Even if I play RS 1 or 2 now the graphics still stun me - such epic dog-fights. I think AAA devs have, in general, forgotten how to use graphics to 'wow' now - and 4K ray-tracing ultra-textures isn't - on it's own - the key.

Some games still can like 'Gris' and I played DK Tropical Freeze last night and still found it jaw-dropping. But show me something like Control and I'm meh - and more impressed with Fall Guys or Ori etc...

Re: Feature: Remembering Super Mario 3D Land, 3D World’s Oft-Forgotten Predecessor

brunojenso

I've always said and thought this game was one of the purest Mario platforming experiences there is - and a whole bunch of fun. Just good good platforming without too many gimmicks.

The only strike against it is that 'Cosmic Clone' Mario can **** right off – but that's not an exclusive problem to this game. Cosmic Clone's just a ****** – that's all.

But generally I really think it's one of Mario's finest outings - and not the second-fiddle title many seem to suggest. It's a very very fine game.

Re: Spelunky 1 And 2 Are Both Coming To Nintendo Switch

brunojenso

Spelunky 1 (HD) is both my favourite game ever, and also my most loathed game ever. I’ve beat it many many times now but can still enjoy beating a hell run every couple of months. Despite the challenge it really is a very special game - even compared to special games. And I’ve heard great things about 2. Also I’ve never played multiplayer so online is my chance

Spelunky actually controls a lot like the best 2D Marios - but maybe better! That was my impression the first time I played it and it still feels that refined and kinda similar countless hours in. It’s like Mario if it was made sadistic.
