@KindofaBigDeal He loves how the Wii game looks. so I'm afraid the higher resolution and players actually having arms and legs now won't mean anything to him unfortunately - it's just new courses he's been hoping for all this time.
I'd throw Nintendo big-bucks to be able to give him that. Maybe the online will appeal - I'll ask him about that.
So my Dad has been playing Wii Sports Golf Resort almost obsessively of many, many years. He's tried all the other fancy Golf games out there, and only likes Wii Sports Golf Resort. It's the only on-TV game he plays, he's done all the Trophies including 18 under-par, and the only, only thing he's wanted all these years is more courses for that game.
Am I to understand they've just made this new one but with only the exact same courses available on the original Wii Sports Resort?! No new courses at all? Are they kidding!
Please, please tell me they made some new courses and this is just additional free content. He's only waited 13 years after all!
He's 82 now, and It'll break my heart to tell him there is a new one at long last but it's just slightly better graphics - not new holes he's not played thousands of times before. Please tell me I've misunderstood!
Otherwise I may just have to have a cry on his behalf.
I feel this article gives a way too exaggerated view of this, and it seems to have worked to skew views looking at some of these comments.
I'm from the UK - a small part called Wales, but have lived in many parts of England too. Most of my family and friends have been Nintendo fans for life and now have Switches, and if I travel by train I see Switch users frequently.
I see Nintendo doing just fine here. Maybe XBox and Playstation do well here too - it's just balanced. But Nintendo is not a weak presence here. It's just not.
Cappy was great - but overall I didn't love Odyssey as much as other 3D Marios, and would strongly challenge anyone saying it was the best, as it's not even close imo. There was simply not enough challenging and engaging 'platforming' in this supposed platformer. Also way to much focus on non-gameplay based things like costumes.
Whatever the next true Mario game is, I want it to be a top-tier inventive platforming game above anything else.
There was nothing wrong with the amazing Wii U Virtual Console library/store (in fact it was excellent) and that should have continued on Switch with existing purchases carried over. Nintendo have been borderline criminal in how it's made us pay, pay, repay, and then subscribe for it's retro collections. Probably displays Nintendo at their absolutely worst, and the expansion concept is frankly the biggest insult yet. I'm not even on the base NSO anymore, and I'm not missing it.
@sixrings 'We' want both, but we will be very happy with this clone. Also is it just a clone if it manages to improves on the original? Sometimes that happens, such as Bug Fable bettering recent Paper Marios. When that happens I'd call it a spiritual successor or a love letter.
@koekiemonster I understand the concern and your viewpoint, but I still don't agree. The Switch is not at the end of it's life. I think Metroid Prime 4 will likely be it's swan song, though I think it could still appear late 2023.
@Koffyman The first one was a quality game with more attention put into it than Nintendo manages often. Not all that's Nintendo is gold, and not all that's Ubisoft is poop.
@victordamazio It's my fav, MK and I've 3 Stared everything after much effort (on a Gameboy Micro!). Controls are unusual in feel, and take some adjusting to, but they are not bad controls.
'the lowered resolution muddies the vibrant world, giving the whole experience a ‘fuzzy’ sheen in a game clearly meant to have defined edges and clear vistas'
This is not acceptable either in docked or undocked anymore (and never was). No more fuzzy/blurry Switch ports for me. Will have play this elsewhere. I love my Switch but we have so many great native games and well-done ports, I'm not supporting games that don't look at least sharp on this console anymore. Why devs don't dramatically lower the fine-details and effects instead of trying to hide it behind blurring I'll never understand. Blurry/fuzzy ports look horrible.
To those with issues regarding the devs, have you yourself ever been a d*** in your life and then changed and grown up? Or are you from that point-on a forever d***? Is it possible these guys could be different by now, or down the line too?
They are not permanently bad people for goodness sake. By all means acknowledge their mistake as you perceive them - then move on. I don't understand how being an idiot at one point in life invalidates any successfully executed creativity by that person (i.e. the games).
I have no intention of 'canceling' anyone when they can be better people in the next moment. And us 'not supporting them' doesn't help the situation, nor does it further anyone's personal campaign to sort the world out either - it probably just makes them hold tighter to the views you hate, due to the hostility they receive.
If this is a good game then I'll support that. And if I can help those same people work through some questionable viewpoints I also will, but it's a separate issue.
This article is about a game - and a damn good looking one at that.

I hope more western gamers enjoy hentai-eske Chibi JRPGs and Farming sims than I do. It kinda made me depressed for the direction Nintendo thinks gaming should go.
@SpaceboyScreams Yeah, that's fair enough - and I'm 1 of those 40 million. However I bought it on the bases of much New Leaf enjoyment, which had more 'games' and 'activities' when you traveled to the holiday Islands and so on. It was less about collecting stuff and more about doing things I think. I had hoped on the Switch they would expand on those kinds of activities, but they went full-on with the collect-stuff for-your-house-and-town route, which disappointed me since I find that stuff hard to enjoy - since it's basically an extension of what we do normally in daily life. It was also very clothes and fashion orientated, which again, wasn't too heavy in New Leaf. I'm definitely not a clothes guy. So It just turn in the wrong direction for me personally. I did enjoy it for a while, but I just needed more Island-games like activities. Anyway I'm glad it's your cup of tea and that its been very, very successful. It's a charming game, and it's reassuring to know a game like that can appeal amongst the FIFAs and the Call of Duties. And I'll definitely go back to New Leaf sometime.
So there you go, New Horizon's is a special game no doubt, and may be 'perfect' in some peoples eyes, but imo it does deserve some of the not-all-complimentary occasional critiquing it receives.
@Abes3 Ruddy hell, I hope it's lighter than that! The Oled is already a heavy-set lassy. I'd hope we can have an improved experience but with the weight closer to the Lite.
Played both years ago on Steam, and replayed the first on Switch (including all the Bonus levels) again about two weeks ago. It really is one of the best puzzle games ever. There are just so many rewarding ah-haaaa! moments. Looking forward to going through 2 again.
Conclusion: this really is a game no body should miss. I just can't imagine anyone not enjoying it. If these games were films they'd be considered cult-classics.
Sorry to go against the flow - but I loved both. Phantom Hourglass was the first Zelda I ever completed, and I've completed many since.
Not once did I think it was a significantly worst experience than the many later (or earlier) Zelda games I've played and completed - and I've completed many of the so-called 'best' in the series at this point. I also loved the stylus controls on both games and had no great issue with 'that' Temple.
I'm just balancing up the view - and not challenging other's negative experience.
That square screen is by far the most interesting thing about the whole device. 720x720 @ 3.1inches makes is a very high 328ppi. That's a bit sharper screen than all current iPads, and certainly a lot sharp than all three Switch models.
If bought primarily to play GB, GBC, Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket/Colour they should look amazing on this screen.
Super Stardust HD is the game that jumped to mind before Nano Assault. Looks great to me. I'm not sure what makes it look like a 'poor-mans' Nano Assault for some people.
@QuickSilver88 Great thoughts - and yeah backwards compatibility is essential as you say. Gamers are rightly sick of having to leave behind the huge investment of the library on a previous and eventually unsupported device. Also agree with you that even if the next Nintendo is a radical piece of inventiveness, Nintendo will still need something that is still firmly routed in their dominant handheld market.
@Matthew90 Bang on. A better Switch just wont be that compelling even 2 years from now.
This isn't about bettering the SteamDeck, this is about new innovation to simply survive in the market. Games like we've never played before will ultimately win in the end.
Sure, many of the public will continue to buy the next incremental iteration of their favourite franchises until the day they die - regardless of whether the new version innovates or not. Idiots basically. But I'm not sure we all will anymore. I think a lot of people will move on if Nintendo is suddenly content to rinse and repeat it's past successes.
Eventually that approach won't even work for the big hitters like Apple and I'm sure they are aware of it. I already don't really care what the next iPhone might do because I already have a mindblowingly powerful one in my pocket that I bought secondhand for 2/3 the price. And if we dare to be brutally honest the OLED Switch was a boring-as-heck upgrade. A better stand, small bezels and a more vibrant screen?! Really! They won't get away with that again.
Not everyone want's to play essentially the same games and genres over and over but with merely prettier graphics and bigger maps.
@Moistnado 'If I need to buy a whole console to play Metroid Prime 4, I'll emulate it'
Ouch! That's a harsh reality for Nintendo now. I'll personally find a way to pay for every game I play - but I understand what you're saying about the hardware investment. And I've got to wholeheartedly agree with you on the Virtual Console situation.
The Wii U eshop was amazing and alive with so many legacy options. I was expecting my standard NSO subscription to be giving me at least N64, GBA and Gamecube by year 3 max for sure. Especially since I already owned many of those games on my Wii U and 3DS account. The way they ungenerously have drip-feed us NES and SNES games FOR 5 YEARS is an absolute disgrace. They've come across as the biggest misers in gaming and have definitely lost some credibility in the process. I personally love and buy a lot from Nintendo but I could not bring myself to buy the NSO expansion pack. I consider it the worse move of Nintendo in decades.
@koekiemonster Exactly my thoughts, nothing against Reggie at all - but we hardly need his or anyones expert opinion on this.
As it happens Nintendo is one of the few companies that could pull it off - but not in the way most of the media and public is predicting. I think a 'more power' approach wont work even though everyone thinks they want a Nintendo 'Pro' hybrid console with the power of an Xbox Series X or PS5. I don't even think it'll work for those guys next time. I mean, at this point, how much do even tech-conscious gamers care how much better Forza 6 might look compared to 5? That game is already photorealistic and somehow a wee-bit boring looking because of it. So for us Ninty fans - is a much prettier BotW 3 really what you want - or do you want the Zelda games you never even dreamed could exist and to play it in a way you never imagined possible?!
Nintendo will probably (and I think correctly) give us another console no one was expecting. Maybe a new take on VR or AR or maybe something totally unpredictable. Nintendo's creatives have very publicly said over and over that they are most interested in finding completely new gaming experiences. In that respect the Switch was kinda too conventional for them really. Sure it was very flexible in terms of HOW you play, but the games are predominantly the same standard one-screen and pressing buttons affair we've had for decades. The design was marketing genius for sure, but in terms of gameplay experience it was nowhere near as interesting as the DS/3DS/Wii or even the Wii U concepts - and I think that bothers a company that cares about creativity as equally as profits. I personally think they'll dare to take a path no one will expect again.
To keep our precious and extensive Switch libraries alive I think they'll do a 'NEW' style incremental approach. I predict (or hope for) a lighter dock-able main switch that rocks a 1080p screen and has just enough of a processor boost so that all games can play with current docked performance (when undocked). Basically a best-of fusion of the comfort of the Lite but with the power of a 1080p (and non blurry) docked and undocked experience.
Another factor is that there now (or very shortly) exists lots of Chinese handhelds that do the above right now!. I could pre-order a (more affordable than you think) AYN Loki or AYA NEO Air and by the end of this year get a handheld the size and weight of a Lite but with a 7 inch OLED screen and that can run A LOT of my currently owned Switch games as well as almost any pre-Switch home or handheld system, PC, Android or Linux games with a well thought out UI.
So think about it - by the time a Switch 2 is released - would such a device be anything special or unique? Tech is moving so, so fast that Nintendo MUST once again be highly original to be relevant in the future.
So in summery I don't think a 'Switch 2' will work as well as everyone thinks for Nintendo. It's too conventional a move for the risk-taking company we love. I think it'd be a very bad move actually - even if it had reasonable sales. However they most definitely need further incremental support for the massive Switch user-base.
Is it me or did this whole 'blurry visuals' thing not seem to appear much on older generations of games. It's a 'this generation thing' and I can't help think that most of us would prefer an honest display of angular polygons over this terrible blurred look to everything. It feels like devs are trying to hide how the games actually look and making them look worse in the process. It's like this generations N64 fog effect and to be honest I'm sick of them doing it. Just show us the rough edges as they are. Sharp and bumpy.
Please devs - stop blurring the sh*t out of our games. I've been playing 3D since ps1 and N64 and it's never been this bad. Even Nintendo do it a bit, on SMO for example.

@Silly_G Thanks - glad it's not just me.
Re: Review: Kao The Kangaroo - Rough Edges Can't Ruin This 'Roo's Return

@Axecon Not this one my friend - it takes a long time to master, but you'll have a lot of fun in your week.
