Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (13th June)

UpsideDownRowlet

I'm a bit late posting this weekend, but I've been playing:

Celeste - After Celeste music filled me with the power to lock in enough to pass Calculus, I've decided I owe it to the game to finish what I was previously unable to. So I'm going back to collect all the strawberries, complete the C-Sides, and finish Farewell.

Pokémon Shield - For no apparent reason, I feel like finishing the Pokédex in this game, so I guess I'm doing that now.

Mario Kart World & Kirby Air Riders - Doing online matches.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream - Usual TL business. Kris Dreemurr has finally agreed to date someone (Frisk) after rejecting 5 other Miis who had a crush on them.

Happy gaming everyone!

Re: Talking Point: Starter Pack - What Are Your Nintendo Switch 2 Essentials?

UpsideDownRowlet

Games: Donkey Kong Bananza is definitely essential. Mario Kart World is only essential for people who either never played 8 Deluxe or who really like Mario Kart.

Accessories: A screen protector is a must; I never used it on my OG Switch and it got fairly scratched up, even when I didn't use handheld much. Some kind of carrying case is also essential. I got a sling type carrying case, since it gives me peace of mind walking around when I can have the Switch 2 right in front of me, though there are much more compact options.

Re: Reaction: A Direct That Picked Up Pace For A Breathtaking Finish

UpsideDownRowlet

Primarily, I came looking for news on Deltarune Chapter 5 and I got that; definitely the highlight of the Direct for me. I was also looking forward to the Ocarina of Time Remake reveal, but the "Nintendo Hire This Man" artstyle and lack of any actual gameplay made for a pretty muted 'one last thing'. While not super exciting, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort does look neat, and I may consider picking it up at some point. The Splatoon Raiders trailer was fine, but I'm mainly looking forward to the SR Direct at the end of the month. The DK Challenge seems like a fun thing to check out, but nothing crazy. Though I'm not a fan of the series and probably won't buy the game, I have to say that Xenoblade Genesis probably has the best graphics on the console so far.

Overall, it was a Good (7/10) Direct. It wasn't anything exceptional, and maybe didn't quite live up to the long wait since the previous Direct, but I was pretty satisfied by the time it ended.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct June 2026 Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

UpsideDownRowlet

My hopes that are somewhat within reason:

  • Deltarune Chapter 5
  • Silksong Sea of Sorrow
  • Ocarina of Time Remake (ON SEPTEMBER 17 OR BUST)
  • Planet Zoo 2 & Jurassic World Evolution 3 Ports
  • Expedition 33 Port
  • Splatoon Raiders Update (emphasis on boss fights, platforming, or both)
  • MKW update with new KT routes.
  • Subnautica 2 coming to Switch 2 (no release window)
  • New trailer for Glaciered
  • More Switch 2 Free updates

Predictions I don't really care about (reasonable or not)

  • News on Fire Emblem, Duskbloods, Rhythm Heaven
  • A new Among Us update
  • Xenoblade Switch 2 Edition
  • Pokemon RSE ports
  • Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Pikmania
  • Luigi's Mansion 4 (first reveal of the show)
  • TOTK DLC (I believe this one precisely because it is so out of left field)
  • 3D Zelda Tease even though it's not coming anytime soon (I'm not getting my hopes up; I'd much rather they wait for this)

What I expect not to see:

  • GTA6
  • Pokemon Winds and Waves news
  • new tracks for Mario Kart World
  • A statement by former US President Barrack Obama
  • Persona

Re: Opinion: Mario Kart World Deserves Its Flowers, So Let's Stop Comparing It To MK8 Deluxe

UpsideDownRowlet

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was already basically a perfection of the Mario Kart formula, and it had 96 courses once all the DLCs were all, so had World been an entirely iterative sequel (especially at a time when people were complaining about the iterative nature of the Switch 2 console itself) it would have inevitably been a disappointment. Instead, Nintendo decided to take a big risk for the franchise, and I think that was the right play.

I think the open-world is great, and the new movement and shortcut potential has made it impossible for me to go back to 8 Deluxe because it's just that fun. Had the game been a proper Mario Kart 9, I think people would hate that too when it failed to have the same course count as 8 Deluxe post DLC, because why would anyone play the new Mario Kart if it was functionally the same but had less content. Nintendo knew this so rather than making the proven formula again, they took a bold direction on the series, and it didn't work out for everyone, true enough, but it has created a very unique experience which many people love, and for those that prefer 8 Deluxe, well they can't take that game from you.

Part 2 of 2

The console itself is immaculate. The build quality just exudes premium design, with the sticks, the buttons, the screen and even just its visual style. Internally, I'm super satisfied with the amount of power Switch 2 packs. While the OS could have been a tad more inventive, the speed it has over the original Switch, especially with the eShop, cannot be overstated. The only concerns I've had with it were how Switch games appear crunchy on the screen (which has since been fixed with Handheld Mode Boost) and more recently some rare Joy-Con 2 disconnects (though I've heard blowing out dust should fix that issue, so I should get on that soon).

Pretty much the only thing that drags this down is the (and I know its cliché) is Nintendo's greediness. Most notably, the price of Mario Kart was psychotic, and nothing the game did could have justified that. Then there's also the big paid DLC push which can be annoying, especially with games like Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokemon Legends: Z-A where I feel like they didn't bother to make super substantial postgame content so they could focus on DLC (not to say the DLC is cut content, neither of those DLC's feel like that).

All in all, this is easily my favorite game console already. From the console itself to the games I've played on it, new and old, this has been the medium for the height of my gaming experience (heck at the start of 2025 I was starting to think that gaming was losing its luster for me, but that sure changed, else I would not be here).

9 out of 10
I really doubt anyone's going to read all of this two part spiel, but I have a lot of love for this device that I want to share, so I'm sharing it anyway

Part 1 of 2

It's the first time I've purchased a console on Day One, and I have no regrets.

On the games side, I feel like with the Switch 2, I'm in my best gaming era (though truthfully, that started right before Switch 2 came out as I played Hollow Knight for the first time). On the Nintendo side of things, they have absolutely provided an excellent year one. Mario Kart World---between its exhilarating movement tech, suspenseful Knockout Tours, and relaxing strolls in Free Roam---has become my favorite Mario Kart game easily (granted I've only played it, 8 Deluxe, and 7... oh I guess I played like one race of Super on Nintendo Classics too). Donkey Kong Bananza is just one of those games with such a unique appeal that works just so well. Also, despite having a very similar structure to Odyssey (a game I thought mediocre), with mechanics like the skill tree that incentivises getting everything, it manages to be an undeniably smashing experience, and is absolutely the standout game of the Switch 2 for year one, and will remain one of those games that defines the console's legacy. Star-Crossed World was the only Switch 2 edition I got for a game I already owned, and while the 12 new levels are great, just replaying the perfection of Kirby and the Forgotten Land in 4K60 was magical. In October, I finally got Pokémon Legends: Z-A (which was a whole rollercoaster of hype for me, where I was insanely ecstatic by its initial reveal, disappointed by the gameplay reveal, soon ecstatic again just by how interesting the battle system looked, let down by the early announcement of DLC to the point I thought I wouldn't even buy the game, before caving just like two days after launch) was a ton of fun, windows aside. Its gameplay loop and battle system make it one of the most memorable games in the Pokémon series (still only my 4th favorite, but I digress). Then Kirby Air Riders surprised me with the Global Test Run, and it went from a skip to a day one buy immediately, and it has absolutely proven to be a very fun multiplayer experience to complement Mario Kart. In December, we finally got Metroid Prime 4...this game blows. Every new mechanic it tried was too scared to fully commit to, so those mechanics only dragged down the base Metroid Prime experience, without providing anything new of its own. In the first half of 2026, I didn't grab any Switch 2 first parties, which is fine because the second half of 2025 was super insane and more then compensates. On the third party side, I've played Deltarune, which is one of the best games ever, Silksong, which is also one of the best games ever, Hades II which is (and say it with me) a good game definitely but nothing outstanding, and Hogwarts Legacy which was a an absolute snoozefest. Then there were the games I played via backwards compatibility (and this games section has run on enough so I'll give my opinion with an emoticon): Cuphead , Portal , Celeste , Portal 2 , Ori and the Blind Forest , A Short Hike , Super Mario Galaxy , Pokemon Scarlet[sup]Replay[/em] , Bowser's Fury , Pokemon LeafGreen Version , Super Mario Galaxy 2 , and now Outer Wilds . Overall, the Switch 2's game library is super impressive and I couldn't ask for more with its exclusives, 3rd-party ports, and returning gems from the Switch library.

Re: Rumour: A Nintendo Direct Might Come Our Way As Soon As Next Week

UpsideDownRowlet

Okay now, let's all make sure we're separating our hopes from our expectations. 3D Mario probably isn't going to appear. 3D Zelda honestly could, since they tend to reveal those way in advance, though I hope not.

Some fairly reasonable hopes of mine for this presentation (if it does indeed happen) are news on Splatoon Raiders, Deltarune Chapter 5, and Silksong Sea of Sorrow, as well as announcements of the Ocarina of Time Remake (and most of all, OoT must come out September 17th, I don't care if mid-late September is already packed to the brim with games).

Hold up, what's that?

Is it just the icon for this specific demo of the game? Is it a boring game we already know about Nintendo just wanted blurred for Nintendo reasons? Or is there a game we don't know about that you're not supposed to spoil.
I lean towards the first, but I consider all possibilities.

Edit: Looks like it was the second possibility after all, with the game being Rhythm Heaven Groove, despite us already knowing what the icon looks like. Gotta love Nintendo's strange sense of discretion.
