I'm working this weekend, so keep me in your thoughts, folks. Had some time to game yesterday though: still chipping away at Metroid Prime 4 (really like it) and am doing my long overdue, first ever playthrough of the original Final Fantasy VII.
Mostly though, Ball x Pit is still eating all my free time. It's just so good and so chill, man. Perfect podcast game.
I do wonder which way they'll go with this: remaster, modern port, or unique version for Switch. If it has a solid campaign I'd be tempted. I do like playing through those every few years or so. I did attempt to play the most recent one on game pass (Black Ops 7, is it?), but my word, it was terrible.
Falcom's games are a recent discovery for me. I'm hoping to slowly work my way through the Trails series over the next few years, it would be nice if they could port Cold Steel 1 and 2 so I can play that full arc on the Switch when I get to it.
They're cute, but last gen taught me that if you just wait, they'll be some sexy special Zelda ones at some point in the Switch 2's life cycle. Stand down for now.
I'm in London for the championships so hopefully I can get a Pokémon Centre reservation. Not holding my breath though. Last time it was awful, we got in on the last day and most of the stock was long gone.
Happy to take a break from new games this month. Though there is Despelote coming to Switch this month, I believe. A nice excuse to finally dive in and play that
These long JRPG demos always completely work on me. Octopath Traveller 0, Romancing Saga 2, Trails in the Sky - they all had demos that hooked me. I just got the Dragon Quest III remake for Christmas so I might hold off on trying this for now until I have time for it. This does look excellent though.
I'm also praying for Star Fox in 2026 but I think we should dream bigger than a 64 remake. That game's been rehashed enough. Let's have something new, fresh and exciting for the franchise!
Man I think this is an exceptional game. Nothing came close for me this year, I just locked into it and found the story, the characters, the world utterly rivetting. The combat was very satisfying to master. A lot of battles kind of play out like a puzzle and I got into this zen state with them, and wanted to take everything out as efficiently as possible. I know it's not for everybody but this games vibe was just 100% my jam and I constantly want to go back to it.
I played this on PS1 back in the day, and have been itching to revisit it. I just started playing this version on Switch over Christmas and it is magnificent. The aesthetic and vibe are immediately attractive to me and the platforming, whilst mostly linear, is so solid. Proper classic, I'm having a blast.
I can't believe Switch Sports is still selling so well. Clearly I live in a bubble because I don't know anyone that's played it. Wii nostalgia must be rife.
Always cool to see free DLC, I'm sure this will be beautiful, but I dread to think how hard it's gonna be. I've been playing Silksong on and off since launch, currently stuck in act 2, beating my head against several challenges. If I ever finish this game, I don't think I'll be able to stomach any DLC. 😭
I respect Silksong immensely, and there have been some great moments, but, man, this game has been so punishing. Hard to say I've enjoyed playing it overall. I wish there was a more manageable way to experience this gorgeous game without losing my mind (and all my rosaries for the hundredth time).
My partner has been into collecting Pokémon cards for the past couple of years. It's been so sad to watch it go from casually picking up packs in stores to no point even trying because they last about 5 mins on shelves. It'd be nice to get her some packs for Christmas, but it seems impossible, unless you're in the right place at the right time.
I tried getting into playing the TCG so we could do it together, but even the pre-constructed decks were getting scalped because they started putting illustration rare promos in them.
Humans ruin nice things. Every collectable hobby turns to *****, look at the retro gaming market. Hopefully the hype around these will die off or supply will catch up with demand and parents can get packs for their kids again.
Btw, the Guardian article about this is really good, worth a click (then come right back to Nintendo Life of course).
@Kyloctopus Consume Me is fantastic, I hope it gets something at the awards too. Would like to see it get a switch port as well so more folks can check it out. It feels so WarioWare at times with the crazy mini games that make up your chores. It would be a great fit on a Nintendo device.
I'm working this weekend and life is always so busy this time of year. But any free minutes I can get will hopefully be spent with Metroid Prime 4.
Also excited to dive into more Sonic Racing Crossworlds now the Switch 2 version is out, and I might do another level or two in Shinobi: Art of Vengeance.
Omg this is all so cool. I thought they'd never reprint that squishy amiibo, ordered one of those immediately! Resisted the urge to get the arm cannon for now, but not sure how long that will last...
Amiibo is the one bit of tat I allow myself to collect. Not sure how it started but I have lots now. I'd like to pick up some of these, they're pretty neat. But yes, expensive, I'm skint and Christmas is approaching. Perhaps someday when I'm having an unwise moment I'll pop a few in my basket. Chef Kawasaki calls out to me...
Ok, looks like a very sincere take on Legend of Zelda. My hope was they would take thePeter Jackson LotR approach rather than the quippy Marvel take everything seemingly has to be these days. From these clips it looks promising. 🤞
The ethernet port on mine doesn't work at all, as far as I can tell. I've not bothered going down the Nintendo support route as Wi-Fi is fine for my setup anyway. Kinda annoying though.
That orange lil guy belongs in a kart. Put him back, slap it on switch 2 and take my money. "Too many kart racers" - nonsense. If soulslike fans can get 6 new announcements at every gaming showcase, then feed me more kart racers. Kirby, Sonic, Mario, Crash. I want it all.
I threw DK Bananza a vote, but my actual game of the year is The Hundred Line: Last Defence Academy. Nothing has had me as absorbed and obsessed as that game this year. An absolute master work.
Totodile was my babe through many a save file on the Game Boy back in the day. Sure I dabbled with Cyndy and the Rita, but it's totally Totodile in my heart. Glad to be reunited. 💙
As if this is happening. It feels so strange that the release day is actually here. I'm stuck at work all day, then have some errands to run, dinner to cook, gotta pack for a weekend away. Man, looks like I'll be up late if I wanna play today. Oh well, gotta be worth it, right? 🫠
I can't see myself wanting to play this much, but the price point is low enough and the controls are unique enough that I'll definitely give it a try. Admittedly if this wasn't first party I don't think I'd be interested.
I was going to make a joke about how it seems to perform about as well as Honda have done in World Superbike recently, but given they won the Suzuka 8 hours, I'll keep my mouth shut.
As a motorcycle racing fan and a Nintendo fan, it's rare the two worlds meet. That was a very bizarre and silly video to witness.
Real kart racers know this game is the goat. The PS1 original is still my favourite of the genre and this remake improved upon everything, has so much content and fan service. Beenox knocked this out the park, I hope they get a chance to return to the series.

Re: One Of 2025's Standout Switch Releases Could Get A Switch 2 Edition Upgrade
I'd love a physical switch 2 edition. Currently I only own it digitally and its so good that I wish I had something to display on my shelf.
I've said it on comments before but this was by far my favourite game of 2025.
