@Burning_Spear Oh, I know this feeling. And it's such a bitter taste in my mouth when my time off is over and I have played anything "proper". When life is rough, there's not much I can't do, as there's no way to concentrate and play a game the way it should be done but, in general, this is the time to play some retro stuff. Last week I turned on my snes mini and started playing a bunch of games. Some of them I quit after a few minutes, but some of them sparked the motivation I needed and played them to the end. Not always the SNES for me but always a retro library in this case for me
I'll be on holiday until the 11th, so it's time to play a lot of games.
For the past few days, I've played and completed Super Bomberman, Demon's Crest and Legend of the Mystical Ninja (aka Ganbare Goemon 1) (SNES).
This weekend and next week I'll be playing:
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch) Kaze and the Wild Masks (Switch) Astro Bot (PS5) Super Ghouls and Ghosts (SNES) Super Star Wars (SNES) The Great Circus Mystery (SNES) The Return of the Ninja Warriors (Switch) Picross S Capcom Edition (Switch)
Some of them I'm halfway through, others I'm starting, and there's always a Picross puzzle here and there between games
I was playing Mega Man 9 handheld yesterday and it's not exactly a nightmare, but it's not as good as a proper d pad. That's why when paying docked i prefer the pro controller or one of my 8bitdos
@LikelySatan @GrailUK Since BOTW came out, people tend to say everything is based on it, as though it came out of nowhere, without any reference, like God Almighty creating everything LOL I wouldn't be surprised if someone said OoT was based on BotW, although I know it makes no sense.
I just need to repeat that every year that goes by, it feels like OoT is getting more and more overlooked, especially by those who weren't around when or around the time it came out
@SBandy1 I have a question about these MKW's numbers: isn't the copy that comes in the bundle digital? These sales figures only include physical copies, so there are a lot of people buying physical copies of MKW?
@Serpenterror Talk about a hefty collection! i only know some of the games you listed across different systems, but judging by the ones I know, an X-Men collection would be great!
@Dman10 @Dr_Corndog What I meant was that assuming that a specific language localization isn't newsworthy is culture bias. It's the reproduction of the colonizer's view. That's what I meant. Having culture bias doesn't make anyone the bad guy. It's not something that's always intended by the individual (i know, it is by some). It's highly likely something one does without even thinking, just like countless stereotypes that we reproduce day after day, me included. I didn't mean to say anything offensive. Honest. But I consider saying that a localization to a specific language (in this case, languages spoken by hundreds of millions of people) isn't relevant/newsworthy to be disrespectful/arrogant.
@Dman10 For those who grew up on all sorts of games in their native language (both original releases and localizations), nothing related to other languages/cultures/people will be worth mentioning. Just reinforces the colonizers view: what's not about themselves could and should be silenced
But those who bought the game when it came out years ago might only know about the inclusion of additional languages through news like this
Metroid Prime 4 (S1): Picross S Capcom Edition (S1) Ganbare Goemon: The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES) Super Ghouls and Ghosts (SNES)
I've been enjoying a balance between modern and old school gaming. Having a ton of fun with Metroid Prime 4 Beyond and taking things really slow. As I still won't have a large number of hours until next weekend, I've trying to enjoy my first play through of Prime 4 without any haste, and it's been a great experience so far. Picross S Capcom Edition comes in for a quick burst of puzzling. This one will give me tons of hours of fun like other games in the series, and it will be a companion for a considerable time. Again, no hurry
And I'm revisiting two SNES classics. Both are really challenging games that reward the player's patience with great game design and relentless traps Super Ghouls and Ghosts still impress me graphically and in terms of sound the same way as it did 30 years ago while Goemon makes me laugh and curse at the same time. Both are gems!
@repsahj I feel you, man. I don't know why, but it seems to me that this time their campaign was even nastier than usual. They picked up the Miles thing and declared that the game was ruined and useless because of him. Having played a bunch of hours (4 keys in the game), I can't see why the NPCs are soooo bad as many people were screaming all over discussion boards and social media before launch
And, no, I'm not new to Metroid. Been playing this franchise since the launch of Super Metroid 30 years ago, and it's my favorite franchise. Im really picky when it comes to my baby, so if gameplay was ruined, I'd say it and show my dissatisfaction and frustration. Metroid Prime 4 is still a great game, despite this ridiculous backlash
@StarPoint There's been a lot of handholding in the series since Prime 1 (3D) and Fusion (2D). Since then, we've never gotten a "get lost then find your way again" masterclass like Super Metroid again
And I'm pretty sure comments would be either "there's too much handholding" or "I don't have the time to be searching every nook and cranny. That's old game design!!!". It's hard to please everyone
Oh, the rumors and clickbait before people actually knew the game... Comment sections filled with "this isn't Metroid!!!!!!", "they ruined the essence of Metroid!!!!"... And now you play the game and understand that these controversial aspects play a small part in the game. These are the times we're living. The internet has already judged it, regardless of what it actually is
While reading your piece, all I could remember was my mom refusing to give me a gaming console because "it'll ruin our TV!". Around five years went by and I started working on weekends to save some money to buy what I wanted. In January 95 I bought a used NES and in October a bought a brand-new SNES
Today I know the weight those five years have on me, so I can just tell you: just give you boy a Switch 2!!!!
I never thought I'd be playing relevant releases on the Switch1 6 months after the launch of S2, but here I am playing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which has been awesome so far. What I'm really sad about after playing some hours into the game is that MP4 got such a backlash before launch due to the controversy surrounding Miles MacKenzie and now I see all that noise, which may have impacted sales and reviews, just cannot be justified. And I heard very little about the point that should be criticized: the musicless desert, which can be solved if you buy an Amiibo. That's the point to be criticized!!!
Also, I'm playing Picross S Capcom Edition . I'm a sucker for Picross games with licensed content and having Capcom favorites in it just makes it cooler!
That's a bug in my opinion. Why on earth would they intentionally prevent the player from searching for items after beating the final boss while keeping the save file "open"? It doesn't make any sense
I'd be really surprised if there were only minimal differences between S1 and S2 versions. It makes sense to me that graphics took a hit. That's expected. But the great news is that performance is great, which suffices. This is the version I'm picking up, maybe for an upgrade later of even for double dipping with the S2 physical edition when I get the S2. Really really looking forward to tomorrow!!!
Graphical fidelity aside, it's really hard to argue that Tomb Raider (2013) isn't the best game in the franchise to come out on a Nintendo system in terms of gameplay
@Bobobiwan you pay $99 for a pair of vouchers. Tears of the Kingdom, for example, costs $70 alone. Vouchers are a great deal for those who decide to go 100% digital and get games day one. And you can make it even cheaper if you buy gift cards at a discount, then use the cards to buy a pair of vouchers
Playing handheld on S1 brings you into another world. I don't have a S2 to compare, but the 720p screen makes it pleasant to look at and enjoy gameplay. And I have this game on Xbox One and PS5. Having it handheld is different. It's a great plus and I'm curious to see the S2 version as there are people saying th3 S2 version is just an improved S1 version... what does it mean? That the experience I can have on My OLED is great or that the S2 version could be better?
@SBandy1 I don't wanna sound like a wet blanket, but as much as what you're asking is something they should have done from the start, it might take them some more years to introduce these features. Maybe when the Switch 3 comes out LOL
It might be nothing to some, but it's an incredible improvement for me. It helps a lot. The "setups" we had at home over 30 years ago are just nothing like today's devices, so every detail counts to improve the experience
I'm very interested in this game! As someone said in a comment above, having a digital map to look at on my tablet will be of great help and will add to the nostalgia the game will give me
I feel really strange about this all. Well, this is my favorite gaming franchise and as releases have been so few and far between, I usually tend to freak out around launch because of hype - which happened before Dread came out, for example - but I think life is getting in the way right now and giving me so much to do and think about that I feel time's been flying and launch day is just around the corner now.
