Lots of good stuff, Switch has been my go-to system for most 2D games (platformers or otherwise). I'd say my five favorites in this genre are Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Sonic Mania, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mega Man 11 and Sonic Superstars (played on Xbox Series X, not Switch, though).
No it's not 'a bit much.' It's a video game, a work of fiction, people need to stop being so damn hypersensitive. If you don't like the content, don't buy it, that simple but there are far more egregious things than this in gaming, in movies, tv shows, etc.
10/10 for me. A few minor complaints but nothing that greatly detracts from the game, though it is stuff that if Nintendo continues to build off this game (which I hope it does, 2D and 3D Mario can co-exist), I want to see fixed.
@UltimateOtaku91 There's plenty of room for both the 2D and 3D entries, but I agree at the start of a generation when a company is most looking to sell consoles, 3D is the way to go because it's the best way to show off a system's capabilities. The 2D entries are great for mid or end of generation releases after the console has been established on the market.
It is a big step up from the NSMB games, thankfully. I liked those games a lot but they weren't on the same level of World, 3, 1, Lost Levels or even the NA version of 2. This one really is the true successor to World.
Picked up both this game and Spider-Man 2. Going to be a good weekend of gaming. I plant to start SMBW first, been my most-anticipated game for any platform since it was announced and the demo convinced me it will live up to my expectations.
Expected to like the game but happy to say I've enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. Big fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series going back to the Genesis days, heck, the original is what made me choose Genesis over the SNES. The last couple years have been great with Frontiers and now this. And while gameplay is most important, have to give a shout to the graphics, Superstars looks fantastic on Xbox Series X. Great to read that the Switch port is more than competent as well.
As much as I liked most of the NSMB games, they really shouldn't have been that hard for Wonder to top so saying it's the best 2D Mario since the SNES days isn't the biggest plus. But, I've played the demo and this review pretty much confirms what I thought, the game is awesome.
Hopefully it means Arkham Knight will run competently but I've been concerned about that one from the start. Also think the jury is out on City but Switch should be able to run it, don't think Asylum should be difficult either. Knight is my least favorite (by a lot) of the trilogy but it's still a decent game and would be nice for Nintendo fans who missed it to get a playable version of it.
@AstroTheGamosian Yeah, I'll admit I was talking mostly from the perspective of how games are made but I do remember the way Iwata tried to keep as many people employed as possible during the struggles of the Wii U era.
I've said before and I'll keep saying it. The industry consolidation is bad in the long run and MS and Embracer's behaviors in particular have been disgraceful. Also, last thing I want to see as somebody who prefers Japanese games is an American company buying Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, etc. It would completely destroy the culture at these places. Hell I'm not even a big fan of when the Japanese companies merge with eachother, like SquareEnix, unless it's a situation where it's absolutely necessary for the survival of both businesses.
@Picola-Wicola @Vil Yeah, I played Metroid Prime back when it originally released on Gamecube and got the remaster the day it launched on a physical game card. If you ask me, it's incredible how well the game has aged. Level design still holds up, boss battles are still fantastic and the upgraded graphics and modern control scheme make it easy for anybody to jump into. Can't recommend it enough. MP 1 is among the top 20 greatest games of all-time and now that it's easily accessible I say everybody with a Switch, fan of the series or not, should give it a try.
On Switch I'm playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Bought the DLC and enjoying the survival mode and using the new characters in the story. Also been revisiting my favorite game on the system, Metroid Dread, which I haven't played in a while.
It was a good enough Direct but unless the it had just flatout sucked, I was always going to get this game anyway. The Super Mario platformers, 2D and 3D, are my favorite series of Nintendo games after Metroid.
@chipia @Antraxx777 @OrtadragoonX Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about the badges, so it's like stated in my other comment, still looking forward to the game and will wait to play it before fully judging. I love 2D Mario games, even the 'New' series, and I'm sure once I get the game and see how all the different mechanics work, I'll realize what the devs did actually makes sense.
@shonenjump86 Yeah, seems like a kind of a lazy decision to make each of the main characters play the same. Maybe when the final game is out we'll see that there was a reason for this but just reading it, definitely disappointed that, at least, Luigi and Peach don't play different from Mario.
Pre-ordered both. I'm a big fan of each series. The first video game I ever played was Super Mario Bros. 1, way back in December 1987 when my grandparents bought my uncle an NES for Christmas. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 was the reason I got a Genesis. I prefer the Mario games so Wonder is the one I'm slightly more hyped for but Superstars is a day one purchase as well. Getting Spider-Man 2, also. Going to be a jam-packed mid-late October.
@Ryu_Niiyama
I'd love to be proven wrong on this, but I think if we're lucky it'll be on Nintendo's successor to the Switch and probably not until a year after it's been on PS5, Xbox Series and PC. Again, though, I'd love to be wrong.
It seems like it's playable enough on Switch based on what I've heard from others but I got it on Xbox Series X as I figured it'd be a much a better version.
I knew Nintendo had a potential hit on its hands back in 2017 when the Switch got me back into the brand after I hopped off the bandwagon during the Wii U's run but I didn't think it'd be this great. Easily my favorite era of Nintendo gaming since the SNES and Game Boy ruled the roost.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It's the easy choice but the game is awesome. I couldn't get into BotW, for whatever reason, and with TotK being more of the same, I'm shocked I like it as much as I have but it just feels like a better product overall.
I don't believe in counting remasters/remakes of games in GOTY discussion, but if I did, then as much as I like Tears of the Kingdom, my vote would have to go to Metroid Prime Remastered. Over two decades later and that game still holds up phenomenally well and it's even better, imo, with the modern control option selected. Would love to see 2 and 3 get the same care, but I want MP 4 first.
@Nightcrawler71 I'd recommend checking out Nintendo Force if you get a chance. Can look it up on Patreon. I've been reading that mag since the Wii U era and finally subscribed in 2017 during the start of the Switch's run. Great read if you enjoyed Nintendo Power or Official Nintendo Magazine.
I'd imagine Final Fantasy XVI wins the first week of sales up against TotK, maybe even stays ahead into weeks 2 and 3 but will be interesting to see what happens after.
Considering the sales numbers Breath of the Wild managed and the hype this game generated, I guess 10 mil+ in 3 days isn't surprising but still extremely impressive. Wasn't sure what the total would be but the midnight launch at my local Gamestop was the first one in years that drew a good sized crowd so I expected the game would be a big hit.
Fun while it lasted, was cool to see NP back again in some form. Hopefully it'll return on a regular basis when the Switch's successor is out, but if not, at least Nintendo Power was given one last go.
This was the first real midnight launch (meaning it took place at 12 am not 9 pm like most have recently), in the area I live in a long time and it's the first one I've attended since 2013 or 2014. Had a great time. Lots of people, which I didn't expect but was great to see a large turnout, one of my co-workers was there and I was chatting with a bunch of other people and reminiscing about big video game midnight events of the past. Wasn't sure I was going to attend it at first but happy I did and very happy to get my physical copy of TotK at the earliest time possible here.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Is Officially The "Fastest-Selling" Super Mario Title Ever
Great start and well deserved. My favorite game of the year so far and I've played and enjoyed pretty much all the big releases.

Switch - Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Xbox Series X - Sonic Superstars
PS5 - Assassin's Creed Mirage, Spider-Man 2
Re: Poll: What's Your Switch Controller Of Choice For Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
Pro Controller because of the HD rumble but I do enjoy using the Super Nintendo classic controller from time to time.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Sonic Superstars?
If I were reviewing it professionally, an 8 or 8.5. But as far as how I much I enjoy playing it, 10/10. I'll be replaying frequently.
Re: Switch Online's 'Missions & Rewards' Adds Super Mario Bros. Wonder Icons
I'll be adding all of them to my collection.
Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

LMAO! I'd imagine that should work pretty well. I know it would've got me to do stuff when I was a kid.

I like both. Anyway... Can't wait to play this game, it's actually my second most-anticipated on Switch after Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

There was a time it might've been ok, not these last handful years, though.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Demo Available At Nintendo Switch Kiosks Across the US
There's a Target about 10 minutes from where I live so I drove over today to check out the demo. Think Nintendo's got another hit on its hands.

Switch - Metroid Dread, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
PS5 - Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle
Xbox Series X - Starfield
Re: Poll: Who Will You Be Playing As In Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
Mario for the first playthrough but I'll definitely use the other characters at some point as well.
Re: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night To Share Details On Two New Modes Next Week
Great game, but I'd be more hyped for a sequel than some new modes. At least they're still doing stuff with the IP.

On Switch I'm playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Bought the DLC and enjoying the survival mode and using the new characters in the story. Also been revisiting my favorite game on the system, Metroid Dread, which I haven't played in a while.
PS5 - Tekken 7
Xbox Series X - AEW Fight Forever

It'll never happen because the game is way too niche but icons for Astralchain would be awesome.
