Re: The US Suffered Its Worst November Since 1995 In Terms Of Hardware Sales

Gamer83

@Omarzy
I think it was the price of Mario Kart that really got a lot of people more than the console itself. Obviously I can't speak to what the majority was thinking but I tuned into a livestream of that April 2nd Direct setup by one of my favorite youtubers. There were a good number of people watching and they weren't huge Nintendo fans but nobody had major complaints about the console price. At most it was slight disappointment. Then the stuff about key cards started coming in, then there was the $80 price of Mario Kart and, well, sh*t hit the fan. You're spot on, though. Nintendo needs to do something. Will be interesting to see what, if any, reaction there is in early 2026. I imagine December is going to be another massive L.

@BaldB3lper78
The follow up to one of the most successful consoles of all-time which has the first new Mario Kart game in over a decade, a legit Game of the Year contender in Donkey Kong Bananza and a brand new Pokémon, getting destroyed in its first holiday season by a five-year-old console is, objectively, not a good thing.

@Jireland92
I think if the only dumb thing Nintendo did was game key cards, people would be annoyed but could look past it. The problem is several decisions that, on their own, wouldn't be as annoying, were all made at the same time. Then you factor in the economy and you get the situation you have. I would be interested to see how things would be going if the market was normal and stable but unfortunately it hasn't been that for several years now and doesn't seem like it will get better any time soon.

@StewdaMegaManNerd
Yeah, it's a very weak argument and just smacks of people trying to cope with the fact that maybe Switch 2 isn't going to be the runaway hit they want. And that's not me saying there aren't other outside factors because there are but pretending Nintendo hasn't made some incredibly dumb business decisions doesn't help.

Re: The US Suffered Its Worst November Since 1995 In Terms Of Hardware Sales

Gamer83

Yeah, even if somebody wanted to, they couldn't spin this into something slightly good, especially when you consider that the gaming industry in 1995 wasn't as big as it is now and just six months ago the latest system from one of the industry's legendary companies was released. This definitely isn't good for Nintendo. First holiday season for the Switch 2 and it got smoked by a five-year-old console on Black Friday, lost the month overall and there were several retailers offering deals on the console themselves. Furukawa is a freaking moron and somebody in a top position at Nintendo needs to wake him the heck up soon.

@mackers84
I'm also intrigued how this will turn out on Switch 2. I'm a big fan of Street Fighter 6, been playing it on PS5 since it launched but aside from a few cutbacks that you really need to look for, the NS2 port is so good that it's become the version of the game I play most. Definitely getting Requiem on PS5 but will double dip if the NS2 version is good.

Re: Katsuhiro Harada Announces Departure From Bandai Namco

Gamer83

My disappointment with Tekken 8 aside, he did good work overall with the series throughout the years and I'm not sure I'd say this is a good thing. Sometimes a newer vision is good, other times it fails and given how hit-or-miss Bandai Namco can be the jury is out on how this goes. Won't find out for while anyway since Tekken 9 is probably some years from even getting an announcement.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th December)

Gamer83

Only game I'm playing at all this weekend is Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2 version). Waited 18 years for another Prime entry and want to give it my full attention. Been a bit of a rollercoaster for me. At points I've really loved it, other things have made me roll my eyes but overall the positive has outweighed the negative and no matter how I feel about the game once I complete it, I'm happy it got made.

Re: Talking Point: Six Months Since Launch, How Would You Rate Switch 2?

Gamer83

Completely agree. Gotta give us something. I'm intrigued by Splatoon Raiders, really enjoy that series and this one is going to be single player focused (which is good for me since I prefer to play games solo) but we don't know much beyond that. It's a popular IP so it'd be cool to get more info. The Mario team did DKB so I wouldn't expect anything on that front, even with the movie in 2026, and Sakurai was busy with Kirby Air Riders so I doubt Smash Bros. is on the horizon. Even with that, it's been a long time since Luigi's Mansion 3 and Nintendo does own the AstralChain IP. Not like there isn't stuff that could be out there to get more people excited. It's great that there's some big third party multiplats but most will buy those on PS5 or PC.

Re: Talking Point: Six Months Since Launch, How Would You Rate Switch 2?

Gamer83

The system itself is a great piece of hardware for what it's supposed to be and I'm very pleased with some of the improvements the extra horsepower has given to some of my favorite NS 1 games. The mouse controls are also a nice touch, Overall, however, while I'd say it's been a mostly good first six months, it's nowhere near as good as its predecessor in the same time frame. That's largely because the software, in particular the first and second party exclusives have not lived up to expectations, the exceptions being Donkey Kong Bananza which right now is my choice for Game of the Year and Kirby Air Riders which is a tremendous improvement on the original. Unfortunately, though Mario Kart World is a really fun game it has some big time flaws, especially in multiplayer. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is just another Warriors game, Pokémon Legends Z-A is another half you know what entry (in an overrated franchise to begin with) and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond may very well be the biggest disappointment of all-time for me. It's certainly the most disappointed I've been with a game over the last 10 years given how much I love the series. Not a bad game, and when it's sticks to being a 'traditional' MP entry it's awesome but the baffling decision to add a bike and open world and an average narrative made worse by putrid NPC dialog makes this, easily, the weakest game that Retro Studios has put out. It lost a ton of great talent over the years and it shows.

The first/second party misses along with idiotic business practices like 'variable game pricing' and key cards and downright despicable legal actions that have been taken against other companies and even gamers also doesn't help matters. All that and I haven't even mentioned the puritans inside NoA going on moronic censorship campaigns against Japanese third parties and cancelling releases because of 'the children' like it's the early-mid 90s again. Something has seemed off to me about Nintendo since the NS2 direct in April and Furukawa better pull his head out of his backside soon and fix it.

Re: Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack Switch Western Release Cancelled

Gamer83

@calbeau
I certainly wish some of these Asian devs would do a better job in that category. Make the character 20 something and make them look it. At the same time, there are people who say Eve in Stellar Blade looks 12, so there will never be an honest discussion on this. The fanservice haters want it gone altogether, which is pathetic when they could just avoid it and let people who don't mind, enjoy those games.

Re: Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack Switch Western Release Cancelled

Gamer83

@BreathingMiit
NoA was a nightmare before people even started misusing the term 'woke.' Sadly, it has had free reign to do whatever the heck it wants during most of Nintendo's time in the console business. There are only two extended periods of time where I can remember they backed off. The original Wii and DS era and the first 5 or 6 years of the Switch 1. And, not surprisingly, both those generations followed absolute sales disasters for their home consoles.

Re: Site News: Nintendo Life Turns 20 Today!

Fun read, thanks for all the hard work keeping these sites running over the years. I found VC-reviews in late 2006/early 2007 and have been enjoying articles on this site since then, also love the other 3.

Re: Team Ninja Founder And Industry Veteran Tomonobu Itagaki Has Passed Away

Gamer83

Very sad to see this news yesterday when I logged onto Twitter. I'll always be thankful to Mr. Itagaki for his contributions to gaming. Dead or Alive 2, along with Soul Calibur 1, is my favorite fighting game on the Dreamcast and DoA 3 being an exclusive added legitimacy to the original Xbox on launch day beyond just Halo. Then there's Ninja Gaiden Black, two decades on and it still hasn't been matched by many action games, forget being topped. I also love the DoA Ultimate collection (the remake of 2 included in there is a great example of how to re-issue a game), DoA Xtreme Beach Volleyball, DoA 4 and the 360 version of NG II. One title I need to track down someday is Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. I was interested back when it originally released but never got around to it. His work was probably best known on Xbox but his more unique efforts (NGDS and Devil's Third) wound up on Nintendo. I don't care what DT's reputation is, Nintendo should re-release it for the Switch consoles.

Re: Poll: So, Did You Get Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 For Switch?

Gamer83

Yup, bought it a physical copy. Mainly wanted SMG 2 but wanted to have it on card so I paid the $70 eventhough I already have SMG 1 as part of the 3D All-Stars collection. Didn't love doing this but it is what it is, still awesome to have Galaxy 2 on the Switch family of consoles. My favorite of the 3D Mario games.

Re: Nintendo Of America President Doug Bowser Announces Retirement

Gamer83

Surprising move indeed but all the best to Bowser in his retirement. Haven't loved a lot of what Nintendo has been doing in the lead up to and since the launch of Switch 2 though not sure how much, if any, really falls on NoA leadership. Good luck to Bowser's replacement. There will be a lot of criticisms like all NoA presidents get, fair or unfair.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Needed A Partner Showcase With Pep; This Wasn't It

Gamer83

All this direct did was prove Nintendo needs to get the Switch 2 dev kits out to more studios, especially the smaller ones. This was an embarrassingly bad show for a new system and I'm starting to seriously question this idiot Furukawa's leadership abilities. He's made a lot of dumb decisions and is clearly listening to the wrong people inside his company.
