Fun read, thanks for all the hard work keeping these sites running over the years. I found VC-reviews in late 2006/early 2007 and have been enjoying articles on this site since then, also love the other 3.
As a fan of the series since the beginning, I'd prefer a focus on the legacy characters as well for the anniversary stuff, but, I'm not going to get all bothered by this the way some people have.
Very sad to see this news yesterday when I logged onto Twitter. I'll always be thankful to Mr. Itagaki for his contributions to gaming. Dead or Alive 2, along with Soul Calibur 1, is my favorite fighting game on the Dreamcast and DoA 3 being an exclusive added legitimacy to the original Xbox on launch day beyond just Halo. Then there's Ninja Gaiden Black, two decades on and it still hasn't been matched by many action games, forget being topped. I also love the DoA Ultimate collection (the remake of 2 included in there is a great example of how to re-issue a game), DoA Xtreme Beach Volleyball, DoA 4 and the 360 version of NG II. One title I need to track down someday is Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. I was interested back when it originally released but never got around to it. His work was probably best known on Xbox but his more unique efforts (NGDS and Devil's Third) wound up on Nintendo. I don't care what DT's reputation is, Nintendo should re-release it for the Switch consoles.
Yup, bought it a physical copy. Mainly wanted SMG 2 but wanted to have it on card so I paid the $70 eventhough I already have SMG 1 as part of the 3D All-Stars collection. Didn't love doing this but it is what it is, still awesome to have Galaxy 2 on the Switch family of consoles. My favorite of the 3D Mario games.
I probably shouldn't because the price is a bit high but Super Mario Galaxy 2 is my favorite 3D Mario game and second favorite Mario platformer ever behind only World, so I'm going to buy it. Been wanting to have it on the Switch for a long time now.
Surprising move indeed but all the best to Bowser in his retirement. Haven't loved a lot of what Nintendo has been doing in the lead up to and since the launch of Switch 2 though not sure how much, if any, really falls on NoA leadership. Good luck to Bowser's replacement. There will be a lot of criticisms like all NoA presidents get, fair or unfair.
To be honest, I would've thought it would happen a little quicker. Still impressive, could catch PS5 in Japan in less than a year if sales remain steady.
Great to see Klonoa: Empire of Dreams. The only game in the series that I've played is the original Wii remake of the first entry way back around the time it launched. One of my favorite games for the console. Can't wait to give this entry in the series a try.
N64 was my primary console in the 32/64 bit era but by the time DK 64 was out, I was doing the vast majority of my gaming on Dreamcast so never got around to that game. Looking forward to eventually righting that wrong.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is among my favorite Switch 1 games, I'll definitely get the upgrade pack at some point, just not sure when. Pretty packed release schedule this last week or so with Shantae Advance, this, the Snake Eater remake and Shinobi.
@Nintendo4Sonic I actually liked the game from the start, but yeah, I think it gets more interesting as you get further into the game. Different level themes, some cool boss fights, new power ups. I also like DK and Pauline's interactions.
All this direct did was prove Nintendo needs to get the Switch 2 dev kits out to more studios, especially the smaller ones. This was an embarrassingly bad show for a new system and I'm starting to seriously question this idiot Furukawa's leadership abilities. He's made a lot of dumb decisions and is clearly listening to the wrong people inside his company.
Laziness and stupidity. SquareEnix really is one of the worst companies out there today. Though it's equally frustrating that those running Nintendo have made it so there aren't more choices than a 64 GB card or the Key card.
@LikelySatan
Yeah, back in the 16-bit days I was a Genesis guy so I'll always have a soft spot for that series. Part of what made me go with Sega at that time. I know they didn't get the best feed back but I also enjoyed the Shinobi PS2 game as well as the Nightshade spinoff.
I own all the other Shantae games on Switch so I'll definitely get this one. Would like to buy it on a game card, but, just like with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, I don't really feel like waiting either and it usually takes a month or two before Limited Run gets games out to people.
Continuing Donkey Kong Bananza on Switch 2. On the PS5 side, I may start Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, but DK is taking up most of the free time I have for gaming at the moment.
I'm not too far along yet but from what I've played, 10/10 from a fun factor standpoint. Exploring the world is fun, the destruction element seems cool and I've enjoyed the couple boss battles. Also think the story, minimal as it is, could end up being pretty interesting.
My favorite new Zelda game of the Switch era. I can appreciate what Nintendo did with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but it's not the approach I prefer for this series.
30+ hours so far. Mostly play single player, I love the free roam mode but also play a lot of Grand Prix and Knockout Tour. It may not be quite as good as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but I still enjoy this game a lot. Look forward to seeing how it expands in the future.
While I don't take to websites like metacritic or opencritic and 'review' games myself, I can understand people using it to show dissatisfaction with something as it's one of the only ways they can. In this case, Nintendo made a stupid update that it had to know would tick people off (it's their game, no way the devs didn't see how people were playing it online). I mostly play offline and I'm not bothered by the intermissions. Still a fun game, imo, though I do prefer the old structure of 3-lap races around a specific track.
I've enjoyed Mario Kart World quite a bit, however, eventhough it's a re-release and I try to stay away from those as a 'Game of the Year' pick, it has to be Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. I never played the game on Wii U but I can see why a lot of people I talk gaming with have it as one of their favorite games of all-time. 70+ hours in and still not even done with chapter 7. Love everything about the game, even the story, which many believe is its weakest element.
@IronMan30 Nope. Part of the next season pass, which is somewhat annoying because I feel like Sagat is one of those characters (along with the rest of the original SF II cast) who should always be on the starting roster of a new SF game, but it is what it is. At least Capcom isn't filling up this game with nonsensical guest characters the way others in the genre do these days. It's just Terry and Mai, and they don't feel too out place given the history between Capcom and SNK.
It's one of my least favorite Nintendo consoles (not that it was bad, though) with only the Wii U and Virtual Boy behind it, but the GC does hold some great memories for me. I was a senior in high school and while I had several consoles in the past to call my own, the GC is the first one I ever pre-ordered and bought on launch day. Remember getting out of work and heading over to the mall where I picked up the system, All-Star Baseball 2002 (was and still am a big sports fan) and a memory card.
I also spent tons of time reading through magazines, main ones being Nintendo Power and EGM at the time, getting the latest news on any games I could. Smash Bros. Melee was the next game I got, a Christmas present from my sisters, followed not long after by 007 Agent Under Fire, Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil remake. All those were awesome games, but the main event, and still my all-time favorite game from that era, is Metroid Prime 1. The fact the series was back after so many years had me hyped but that the game delivered and then some made it even better. There were plenty of other games I enjoyed, Soul Calibur 2 and F-Zero GX both near the top of the list, and revisiting those on Switch 2 has been a lot of fun. Still hold up extremely well.
Mario has been and always will be my main character in this series. But for each entry I like to mix things up once in a while and choose some other one. For World, my no. 2 racer is going to be Daisy.
If Donkey Kong Bananza delivers, then so be it. I like 3d Mario games but I have no problem waiting until some time in 2026, especially if, in addition to DKB, we also get Metroid and possibly one more first party release this year. For some Pokemon will be that big game. And there was Mario Kart on day one. It's not like Nintendo isn't doing anything for NS2 this year.
@Folkloner Well, it's been a proven fact over the years that Nintendo fans don't buy third party games, which is why the support has been weaker compared to other platforms.
Well, that sucks. Just means third party support is going to dry up. Pathetic job by Nintendo fans. Yakuza 0, Street Fighter 6, Sonic Generations, just to name a few. And I don't want to hear the key card argument. It's beyond pathetic considering many games aren't fully on PS5 or Xbox discs but nobody uses that as an excuse not to buy.
The last Amiibo I bought was the set for Metroid Dread. I did get the Street Fighter 6 Amiibo cards but that's not really the same thing. This is cool, though, I'll definitely have to buy it along with the game.
10/10. Might be my favorite Direct that Nintendo has ever done, mainly because the game looks awesome. I was already hyped enough that I pre-ordered it the day I pre-ordered Switch 2, I figured it would be good but it seems now like this could be a legitimate Game of the Year contender. The action looks sublime and there could be a fairly deep story as well. Really looking forward to getting to play this.
@Serpenterror Well, like I said, I love the game so I'd definitely buy it again for NS2 but even without Sony own the IP, it did publish the game, I'd be shocked if there isn't some legal mumbo jumbo to prevent the game from being on competing platforms other than PC.
Maybe the sequel will be on Switch 2 but there's no way in h*ll that Sony puts a million-seller that it published on a Nintendo platform. Zero chance. I'd be a day-one buyer just like when it launched on PS5, great game, but it'd be too good to be true.

Switch 2 - Super Mario Galaxy 2. One of my favorite video games of all-time, very happy to be able to play it on a modern system.

Re: "It Was A Bit Of A Perplexing Experience" - Hideki Kamiya On The Fan Reaction To Bayonetta 3
I really liked the parts when you played as Bayonetta, not so much with the other characters. Overall a good game, but 1 and 2 are better.
Re: Resident Evil Requiem Has Been Officially Confirmed For Switch 2
It's a nice get for Nintendo but PS5, Series X or PC are all better places to play it. Would've been more hype if the direct itself had been better.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th September)
Switch 2 - Donkey Kong Bananza
PS5 - Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
