@USWITCH64 I agree. Without realizing it at the times, the gimmicks they introduced in each new system always sparked a sense of excitement and curiosity.
The innovative features also made every long running franchise feel fresh again. What’s waiting for us now are just the “same” games again that we had on Switch, just looking a bit better. Not saying that it won’t be good or fun, but it does lack the usual feeling of hype that normally comes with a new Nintendo console.
@Uncle_Franklin I feel you, I feel exactly the same. I wish it would excite me, like every console reveal has done in the past. But the new system doesn’t resonate with me at all. My age probably has something to do with it, but I think Nintendo itself is changing too.
Can you bring into words where your lack of excitement comes from in your opinion?
@larryisaman I agree that giving it a confusing name isn’t a smart idea. But just sticking a number to it is the other bad end in my opinion. Too bad they couldn’t find the golden middle way this time around. Glad for you that you’re happy with it though!
They screwed up with the name and marketing of the Wii U, yes. But there never was any confusion when they named the “Super Nintendo”, “Game Boy Advance” or “3DS”, for example. Those systems paid homage to their predecessors and still made it very clear they were the next big thing.
Hopefully we’ll ever receive some inside information about why they suddenly opted for a numeric name. I’m very curious to hear the reasoning why they decided to break tradition with this one.
@the_beaver The article asked us to rate the reveal trailer, so I can’t take into account any potential games that may or may not release in the future.
I can only base my opinion on what I’ve seen right now. And that was simply underwhelming at this point, for me personally. But I’m happy for you if you’re all hyped up!
@AstroTheGamosian I was thinking the same thing. It sort of feels like the pressure of the leaks made them drop a trailer earlier than they wanted, just to get it over with.
The idea for a mouse gimmick sounds nice on paper, but I doubt it'll really work out all that well in practice.
For one, you'd need to be able to put the "mouse" on a flat surface, which is typically not available for a console setup. Besides that, the controller doesn't look very comfortable to use if you hold it like that.
@ottoecamn Yes that's true, we don't know what's under the hood. They might surprise us with the tech.
But judging from what I can see right now, it just feels like a very small step forward and not the launch of a full new generation. It gives me the same vibes like the GBA SP, DSi and New 3DS.
Auch... They were clearly still afraid after what happened with the Wii U, so this time around they are playing it safe. Too safe. Which means we are now facing the other side of the medal - a complete lack of innovation and no real sense of wonder and excitement.
The lacklustre name "Switch 2" symbolises the machine perfectly I suppose.
@LadyCharlie It’s definitely not flat out worse than the 3DS version. It improved on certain areas, such as resolution and frame rate, while falling giving in on other aspects like loading times. So it depends what you personally value more.
It’s probably not worth getting it again if you already own it. But if you don’t, it’s still a phenomenal game.
Some reviews seem a bit on the harsh side and are throwing in some strange arguments. It’s a great game, highly recommended for everyone who hasn’t played it yet!
They credit the people that worked on this specific version of the game, a game which is based on the work of a different development team. Exactly as the credits state. Not sure this is worth all the fuzz.
@fenlix Can you please eleborate on that? I’ve checked the user agreement of various retro devices and games, but I can’t seem to find anything about that being the case back in the day.
As for modern gaming, I suppose you’re right. True ownership doesn’t exist anymore. And with physical copies often relying on additional downloads and patches, those lines are fading too.
@GameOtaku Sure it would be nice, but allowing people to play Nintendo games on different devices or a PC probably isn’t going to happen. Perhaps even for the best?
It’s also worth noting you don’t technically own most digital content you pay for, but you are granted a license to use it. But that’s a different discussion altogether.
@GameOtaku I have many iOS games from back in the days that I cannot play anymore, because the current devices don’t support them any longer. Nice for me that I still “own” them and that they are included in my account, but what’s the point if I can’t play them anymore?
My point is that it can never be guaranteed digital owned content will last. You’re always dependent that they keep supporting it down the road. That’s not real ownership in my book.
It’s a different business approach which you could prefer or not, but it can still not guarantee preservation of your library in the future.
Let’s say in a worst case scenario Nintendo goes bankrupt and your account they are tied to goes down. You would still lose all of your “purchased” games.
Preservation is just very tricky with digital content and technology in general. Even physical cartridges have an expiration date and will stop working sometime.
I’m a big retro enthusiast and prefer to “own” the games. But that’s just a sentimental matter.
The NSO subscription service offers just so much more value for money, it’s hard to beat. Plus this way you’ll discover some titles that you had otherwise never purchased standalone. I like it more than the VC.
It’s either canceled automatically because a certain time threshold has been passed, or they were informed the new selling price is going to be a lot higher than they initially charged.
Yikes, that looks a bit too much like the OG Switch. I hope they will have some surprises up their sleeves in terms of functionality. Formwise it’s starting to look like it’s just a soft upgrade, akin to the “New” 3DS line.
I’m not convinced that these are unusual circumstances. It’s healthy for both the developers and studios to get a fresh wind every once in a while. That is, if the studio manages to attract enough new talents to make up for it.
I hope they take all the time they need. Having said that, I think they should have kept the announcement under the radar a little while longer, at least until they actually have something to show.
Sad but true. A game like Punch-Out would receive tons of backlash in today’s overly sensitive society. I can imagine an entertainment company wouldn’t dare to burn its fingers on it.
It’s a shame, because the stereotypes were really fun characters that made the game shine.
@Carck You forgot quite a few. Here's the full list:
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (2014) Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (2014) Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (2016) Sonic Forces (2017) Sonic Mania (2017) Sonic Mania Plus (2018) Sonic Frontiers (2022) Sonic Superstars (2023) Sonic X Shadow Generations (2024)
And that's not counting another 7 spinoff / party games.
So yes, that's quite a packed schedule, in my book.

Re: Talking Point: Did All The Switch 2 Leaks 'Damage' Nintendo Or The Console's Reveal?
Yes, the leaks spoiled the reveal pretty much entirely.
It didn’t help that Nintendo hardly showed anything new that hadn’t been leaked already.
Re: Nintendo's Share Price Dips Following Its Big Switch 2 Reveal
No surprise there. Their stocks always drops
after a new reveal.
Re: Random: Switch 2 Leakers Called Out By Industry Veteran Hideki Kamiya
Leaks are horrible. Not just this one, but almost every game reveal gets spoiled these days.
Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of Donkey Kong's Redesign In Mario Kart 9?
I love it! Gives me retro vibes.

Re: Nintendo Will Hold A Switch 2 Direct Presentation In April
That's a strangely long wait. Makes me feel like today's reveal wasn't the original plan, but rushed out under the pressure of all the leaks.
Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?
@AstroTheGamosian I was thinking the same thing. It sort of feels like the pressure of the leaks made them drop a trailer earlier than they wanted, just to get it over with.
Re: Poll: So, What Did You Think Of The Switch 2 Reveal?
Where's the fun, the joy, the creativity? The things we came to love so much of Nintendo?
This teaser felt soulless and corporate-y. It really lacked that touch of "Nintendo magic".
Re: Switch 2 Will Be Backwards Compatible With Physical And Digital Games, With Some Exceptions
Glad to have the confirmation again regarding backwards compatibility.
Hopefully we'll also see performance boosts and easy save game synchronisation.

Re: New Mario Kart 9 Teased For Switch 2
@BaldB3lper78 Thanks for pointing that out! I thought it was supposed to be a new Mario Kart game.
Weird move of them to show an old game in the reveal trailer of a new console, though.
Re: Switch 2: Hardware Gallery - Take A Closer Look At Nintendo's Lovely New Switch
Way too slick and stylish. I miss the spark of fun and imagination in this new machine.
It feels like Nintendo is a kid that has grownup.

Re: New Mario Kart Teased For Switch 2
Is it just me, or doesn't this look like a next gen title at all? It honestly feels like I'm looking at a regular Switch game.
Not really the grand first impression you like to make with a new console...

Re: Nintendo Is "Very Upset" About The Switch 2 Leaks, It's Claimed
Sadly, the world is just a much less respectful place then it used to be. Keeping things secret is not possible anymore.
Blogs, podcasts, social media, streaming channels… They are filled with vultures that just want the latest scoop for a moment of fame.
Re: Nintendo Lawyer Breaks Down What Makes An Emulator Illegal

Re: Retro Staff Credits Removed From Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, Forever Entertainment Confirmed As Devs
People can really overreact. Especially the ones saying they aren’t buying the game
because of this.
Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic
The drop from a 10/10 to a 7/10 is quite bizarre. The game is just as fun as back in the day.
I get that a minor penalty might be applied because of how little it adds, but a severe drop like this is a bit extreme imo…

Re: Rumour: Konami And Square Enix Expected To Bolster 'Switch 2' Software Library With Major IP
It’s looking to become a major port fest. Hopefully there are also some completely new games in development by third parties, not just rereleases.

+1 vote for Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Odyssey and Metroid Dread.
Re: Random: Metroid Prime 4 'OG' Amazon Pre-Orders Are Being Cancelled
It’s either canceled automatically because a certain time threshold has been passed, or they were informed the new selling price is going to be a lot higher than they initially charged.
Re: Round Up: 'Switch 2' Renders Suggest A Sleek, Classy Successor
@canaryfarmer Completely agree.
The “Switch 2” name feels way too bland and corporate for a fun and imaginative brand like Nintendo. I really hope this name turns out to be false…
Re: Nintendo Breaks Silence On 'Switch 2' Image And Video Leaks
Leaks from online random people are one thing, but Genki really pushed things over the edge. Very unprofessional for a company like that.
Re: Talking Point: Is The Switch 2 Going To Be Too Big?
The OG Switch was already too big for a handheld. I still take the GBA or DS with me on a trip instead, because they are much easier to take along.
Re: Genki Claims The 'Switch 2' Joy-Con Can Be Removed By 'Brute Force'
Bizarre how unprofessional Genki is behaving the past weeks. They do anything to make the news.
Re: Talking Point: Everyone Else Is Busy Revealing Switch 2 - What Gives, Nintendo?
It isn’t all about the hardware. It’s also about the software. And that remains a complete mystery so far.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Tops Rolling Stone's 50 Best Games Of All Time
In a list of significantly influential games, it’s very strange to not see Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
I suppose they only wanted to highlight one entry per game franchise, which resulted in some odd choices.
Re: Random: Let's Be Thankful The 'Switch 2' Won't Be As Big As Acer's Ridiculous New Handheld

Re: Rumour: New 'Switch 2' Photos Show Off A Very Legit-Looking Joy-Con
It looks so similar to the current design that I just can’t believe it’s real.
I expect they learned their lesson after the Wii U to make sure everyone understands it’s a completely new product this time.
