Wow $70 for a key card that competes with indie farming games. I get they can’t go head-to-head with Stardew Valley, but … $40? $50? seems much more reasonable for what looks like a 10-20 hour cozy game.
They should do it, but not gonna happen. They don’t see the need to and they still underestimate their core base and how they want to consume Nintendo products.
I would love DF to do a side by side comparison with the OG Switch and OG Steam Deck. I love those guys, but its so technical — and I ❤️ that — it’s not really clear to a larger audience.
Tl;didn’t watch: Switch 2 is great, Gamechat is awesome, screen has many compromises for the price point.
@cvrator I have two new Ultimate 2Cs for family and friends. What a deal! $50 for two controllers with Hall effect sticks, as you said amazing rumble, and great battery life. They work great in Mario Kart World. Nintendolife you really should check em out.
As a multiplayer title it’s good. Online is fun and challenging. Loving split screen with the camera. And I agree with all the criticism esp for single player mode.
On why no split-screen free roam? It’s almost certainly a memory issue. I don’t think Switch 2 can hold and run the world as-is from two completely separate locations. They would have to put a boundary around player 1 and yank player 2 back in when they go too far away. I think they do something like this for 2-person online. I think for purely local they probably tried it and found it was miserable. Players are naturally not going to stick together in “free roam.”
I love it. Glad I got it as a bundle tho ($50 digital vs $80). Also glad I got a camera as that helps makes the game feel different than mk8 and easier to find friends and family.
Main critiques:
I wish the free roam collectibles felt like they do anything and were trackable. I got a P Switch. So what? How many are there? How many did I get? How many left? Etc.
I want the camera to follow my face. People move.
Difficulty ramps up quickly. Going off road is a huge penalty which is imo why smart steering is the default. Game probably needs to do a little more for brand new players.
The Switch 2 is going to be a better experience for most people and will wildly outsell the Steam Deck. -Lighter/More portable -Easier to use, games optimized for that device -Big screen
But Steam has: -Free online services that are superior. -More games, cheaper games -Ultimate backwards compatibility — I don’t need to repurchase Hogwarts Legacy to get a better version, I just need better hardware. Deck 2 will make all my existing games look phenomenal.
Infinity Nikki has no fall damage and is a better game for it. I can see games where the emphasis is exploration or cozy vibes going this route. Anime inspired games as well.
“Speaking of which, we're somewhat confident that Nintendo will likely replace the Gold Points program with something similar when the Switch 2 has found its footing.”
Why would you have any confidence? I don’t find your sourcing or argumentation convincing. This could just be a way to offset US trade wars.
@Waveboy thank you especially for the 3ds video link! That was such a different tone. It had me and my kids in stiches laughing. It looked so fun. I want more of that.
This is the most tech-bro Apple-like trailer I have ever seen from a gaming company. I think it’s gonna be a good gaming device but I’m not really sure who this is for. As far as I can tell, this is for Nintendo executives who want their company to seem important and are upset that their hardware is being spoiled by leaks during manufacturing.
I just want it to be fun. Can we have the 3ds features back? I loved opening the 🎁
It seems like if they did some balancing, had a story mode option, this could be bigger. But JRPG competition is stiff now and this would be low on my list.
@sleepinglion I’m playing on ps5 with child. It’s ok. The graphics are amazing but the script is much weaker than Lego HP. It’s also confusing. The community board brick rewards aren’t clear. It’s going to take forever to kill 15 robots with bombs. There is no level select so I’m not clear how to replay our favorite parts to earn trophies or rewatch any cutscenes (if we wanted to ). At one point in one level the path split and we went the wrong way and we can’t try again. The world hub is gorgeous, but not fun. Lots of backtracking. And the game is stingy with money/rewards so **hours in** we have spent most our money on level upgrades and have barely unlocked decor or costumes. Which makes me sad bc it means I am going to finish this game and not get to use most of the buildings or costumes. And they clearly put work into it so that’s a shame.
That said, my kid loves it and we’re spending time together fighting lego robot dinosaurs. And I hope they make a second one that addresses the issues.
💯 on all the pros and cons. I’d also add they gave me 2 extra Korok masks and now I want to find the pieces to build them. I’m really hoping they make some smaller sets so more fans can join in. $300 is a lot. I want a Majora’s Mask Clocktower Moon set and a BoTW Guardian Set. Oh and way more Princess Zelda.
Sky FC is my favorite. I’ll have to get it even though I suspect it won’t beat the original (updated) PC 2004 release, I love that they’re doing this so more people can play Sky.
I don’t understand why games are taking longer to dev. I have suspicions for why it might be so, BUT is there anything comprehensive that explains why?
I think I have to buy it or Nintendo will never make another game with Zelda as lead.
I wish they used a different art style. I wish Link wasn’t on the box cover and I hope he’s barely in the game. I worry this game is the Black Widow movie equivalent, but for Zelda. Nintendo, make Zelda premium!
I think Switch 2 is going to be in some ways a Steam Deck that’s lighter and more comfortable to hold, plays new and old Zelda/Nintendo titles including BC with Switch 1, and — of course —worse online features and DRM.
I expect games like Mass Effect. I wonder if Sony games like Death Stranding and Horizon will be on new Switch.
With Xbox flalling and Sony on Pc and Square doubling down on multiplat things are getting weird.
Drift has been an expensive annoyance for my family. The free repairs were nice. I wonder if they’re over and done and now Big N can just continue gaslighting everyone that it never happened.
BotW is the better game because it’s simpler and less overwhelming. It has focus and many moments of calm.
TotK is just more fun. The powers are better. The physics are amazing. Falling is a blast. Temples are better. Puzzles are better. Beating the game “cheating” feels amazing. Villain is more engrossing. But it had too many things!! — it can be overwhelming. 70 hours in I paused and I still haven’t finished it.
I’m guessing this rumor is wrong but props to DF for thinking through it.
I’m actually more curious about what kind of launch titles you would expect in 2024. New Zelda? New Mario? New Splatoon? Like we just did all of those. Probably not getting new Smash Bros. My guess is this is the opposite of Switch Lite. Maybe Switch Heavy? Lol. What is supposed to drive adoption? I am so curious!
I really hope the new Switch is more like a toy and less like a tablet. The 3ds radiated with joy. Make the os fun. Make it silly. Transparent colored plastic all the way.
Some commenters here would rather Nintendo not support the growing community of gamers who are less abled.
Just to be clear to others: Asking Nintendo to add accessibility features like basic button remapping to their top tier AAA $70 videogame is a reasonable ask.
It’s not zero sum. Nintendo can have record profits, we can get a great game, and it can have button remapping. Arguing that Nintendo shouldn’t do this is exclusionary intolerant behavior and I will call it out.
@Heartless666 I appreciate that you acknowledge life is unfair. I wish your solution wasn’t to minimize the unfairness as “not my problem” AND to complain about anyone with that problem as if **having to listen to that problem is just so unfair to YOU***. It’s not all about YOU dude. Go touch grass!
@Heartless666 now imagine if you couldn’t play it.
Maybe you had an injury and were healing Maybe you were just born that way Maybe you had arthritis or are aging
**We are all just temporarily able bodies**
Just imagine being locked out of something because you are different. That’s all this author is asking for — support being able to enjoy something they love.
@SwitchForce You could actually watch Digital Foundry instead of making assertions about who they are or what they do. I have a background in computer graphics and software engineering and they make a lot of sense to me. Nintendo can’t beat physics or modern economics so you can make wise educated guesses about what they can do.
DF employees are taking screen measurements, looking at chip releases and leaks based on power requirements, acquiring and running custom hardware to emulate other systems.
You can call what they do “opinion” but you can also say your doctor, dentist, or bridge engineer has “opinions.”
Is it possible that there’s a custom GTA 6 that eliminates most of the crowds and game logic and has a completely different lighting system? Sure. I would argue that would be a different game.

@Vyacheslav333 i think it’s reasonable to conclude Nintendo doesn’t want too much competition. I want Infinity Nikki on S2.

Echoes runs poorly on my OG switch and in docked mode in the overworld on a horse is janky and dizzying.
I wonder if this was supposed to be a Switch 2 launch window title.
Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?
I think this is the maybe the best first Zelda game to play. 8 or 9 out of 10.
Performance issues are real but I played Star Fox.
