@Aawill91 thanks for the context. I would guess a Feb-March 2024 announcement and a Summer release to give manufacturing time to wind up for Fall 2024. Or wait until 2025. But then again, maybe they are saying they plan to release later this year. Who knows.
@roboshort wow dude, I hope that when I am in my 40s-50s I have more to look forward to then a glass of tap water and minimal interaction with humans or this planet. I love videogames and I am an introvert but I don’t live life in muted color palettes. The world is a fascinating place.
I bet Switch 2 in April or May 2024 that runs TotK in 4k 60. Nintendo can and will drop some games or remakes/WiiU ports on us for the Fall (Metroid Prime 2, Galaxy 2) and they will announce Zelda DLC and/or Wind Waker/Twilight Princess. And some new ip. Nintendo is pretty good at surprising people.
@Chaotic_Neutral If it has similar performance to the first game but with new features then they clearly found performance improvements because they added way more physics and object interactions and increased the draw distance and world complexity. It’s amazing this will even run on Switch.
And please don’t bully people because you don’t agree with their opinion on videogames.
There have been some amazing Switch ports and I am amazed that games like Witcher3, BotW, or XC3 work on Switch.
But, man, it must be difficult sometimes to be a Nintendo dev stuck developing your AAA game for a low power 2017 mobile chip and seeing indies — with a fraction of your budget — launch better looking and more performant games for other platforms. The performance issue isn’t just about appealing to consumers, it also is about retaining your talent.
@Purgatorium thanks for that detail. I plan to get 6 but trying to decide which platform. I am hoping to learn about performance differences in the coming days.
I think they should work on expanding the Mario universe. A Halloween Luigi Mansion movie would be awesome. Splatoon and Zelda anime series. Animal Crossing TV series. No Star Fox unless there is a game to match. Pikmin… no idea. Kids mini tv episodes similar to Pui Piu Molcar?
It’s not clear right now it gets them anything. Even in Persona which has lots of dialog the main character is pretty silent and it is fine.
But I still want a game where Zelda is the main character and in that instance I could imagine it would be more important to have Link voiced. And if so, they just have to get it right. Please don’t use celebrity voices.
@SwitchForce dude have fun shilling for corporate execs and their private jets. Nintendo’s legal department HAS to demand this person gets fired cause ***Rules***!
@Switch_Pro I am not aware of any legal requirement where companies have to (1) pursue solving leaks in order to claim standing on separate leaks or (2) they are required to demand specific forms of action against leakers such as demanding an employee be fired. /shruggie.
@Switch_Pro Do you see that both of us have valid points?
I can absolutely acknowledge that GameStop has the right to remove employees and shouldn’t keep employees who violate secrecy agreements on their payroll. That’s bad business. I also acknowledge that individuals are responsible for their decisions. This person knew better.
Now,
(1) Can you acknowledge that GameStop’s IT and security departments can do more to protect allegedly private information that has been consistently leaking from them for the past twenty years?
(2) Can you acknowledge that Nintendo — instead of “demanding the employee be terminated over the leak” — could make different demands and wasn’t forced to demand this particular outcome?
(3) Can you acknowledge Nintendo wasn’t financially harmed in any meaningful way from this leak? That this multi-billion dollar company in particular immediately sells out of whatever special edition hardware they make.
@Switch_Pro what’s your “agenda”? Why defend Nintendo? Do you work for them? Were you fiscally harmed by the employee “leaking” the existence of a new Switch model?
@Adol-Bannings could GameStop the parent company be at fault for not securing upcoming trade secrets and internal databases from their own employees?
It’s soooo easy to blame the minimum wage employees. That’s what most multinational billion dollar corporations do. That’s way easier and cheaper than actually being responsible.
Nintendo knows this. And they should get asked by the press in every interview about the things that suck. Their legal takedowns of fan charity events. Their failing Joycon hardware. Their alleged treatment of contractors and temp workers.
They are an amazing company that makes amazing games but we don’t have to pretend they are blameless. They are an elite multibillion dollar company. Let them own that.
7.5 Really fun, great score, lots of easter eggs, I loved it and my kids loved it. Peach was more of a character than I expected. Bowser from School of Rock stole every scene. The film was beautiful.
That said, the pop songs were fun but jarring. There wasn’t much of a plot or any character development. And I wish they had spent more time on Peach’s backstory. Or just more Bowser and Jack Black.
I think their more detailed discussion around why #12 makes a lot of sense especially looking at the competition. I feel like Nintendo got more into theme parks and movies lately though I am counting on new Zelda to knock it out of the park.
@Switch_Pro we are talking about a videogame system designed to last 5-7 years so 2024-2028/2031? A lot can change in that time. /shruggie The Switch has been fabulously successful, but Nintendo shouldn’t just assume they can rinse and repeat.
@Switch_Pro I think over the past five years we have seen (1) an increase in VR systems with Apple apparently launching one soon (2) the creation of mobile pc gaming form factors and (3) functional cloud and subscription gaming services. As long as Nintendo makes good AAA games, maybe it doesn’t matter to you or me. (But it does matter to them and their business model) I am confident if Nintendo makes great games they will have an audience who will pay for their hardware.
A good demo helps you make a choice with zero risk. That could be a 15 minute demo or a ten hour demo. The shorter the demo, the less the save data is an issue for me.
I think companies have moved predominantly to a new model where they make a game and sell it and then (1) discount it heavily early after launch (2) “give” away their games using Epic or Sony especially right before launching the sequel.
I probably would never have bought Little Nightmares but after getting the first for “free” I gladly bought #2.
I just hope it’s a great game. If it is, then $70 is fine.
I could easily spend $70 to take my family to a movie or out to dinner. Cumulatively, we spent hundreds of delightful hours playing BotW+DLC. If I get something close to that? Fantastic.
@Eagly People want to feel seen and validated. They want to feel a part of something bigger than themselves. I think some people take any criticism of their choices or the things they love as criticism of them and they lash out. That violence is a part of our history, language, and many people’s upbringing. We talk about “people being wrong”, when we mean to say “a particular idea is incorrect”. See the difference?
I deeply wish that we could more easily remove the toxicity from fan sites and comment boards and I would challenge any gaming website to think deeply about the issue. How can your site promote a culture of inclusion and kindness? I think that would be better for everyone. Nintendo games in particular trend to younger audiences and I would be sad to find 8 year olds or 10 year olds being chewed out in comments for what they love.
People are welcome to like Pokemon in whatever state it is in and for whatever reason. And because I choose not to but Pokemon Violet or levy criticism at Nintendo or GameFreak doesn’t mean that choice in any way reflects on your choices. Love what you love.
@Eagly I mean yes some people want JRPGs and there so many options like Chained Echoes or Trails of Cold Steel and Genshin Impact. And some people want creature collector games and there are games like Tem Tem or Ooblets. There is so much gamer choice right now it’s awesome!
I just don’t get it Nintendo. I’m convinced their sales and marketing teams are screwing them over.
Give away Mario Kart 8 and try to get people hooked on the DLC or your expansion pass sub.
Give away BOTW and try to get people to pick up the DLC and the sequel.
Discount Splatoon 3 in late 2023 to drive sales of the DLC.
Discount your console to drive software sales
etc.
I don’t think their current rates actually make them the most money and it’s not a great deal for customers.
An Xbox Series S plus a year of Gamepass is about $300. It’s not portable and it’s not Nintendo games but… it plays all the new games and doesn’t have drift.
A Steam Deck is $400 and while its battery life and screen aren’t as good as a Switch and it wouldn’t be great for little kids especially, but its games are going to be significantly cheaper and unlocked.
I got a Switch and MK8 for $250 in a 2018 Black Friday deal. I just don’t get it. I guess work on your movie and theme parks?
@MS7000 +1000000 the Splatoon 3 dlc trailer was super confusing. Pay extra to visit storefronts from different games (wave 1) and something else (wave 2) wasn’t quite the hype they maybe thought it was.
Part of making something and transitioning it is watching others make something different than you would make and that is hard.
I watched NL’s side-by-side and was repeating baffled by some of the visual changes between the two games in the credits, lighting, etc. But I also recognize that design is hard and I have no idea what kind of constraints were imposed on thr artists, development team, etc.
I get where this dev is coming from and I think he might be an amazing DF retro guest. I am glad that there are still places on the internet where we can hear this kind of talk rather than it just being a ratioed, corporate hellscape.
Good Direct but needs better stories around each title.
I can’t tell what wave 2 is for Splatoon DLC. Where is Pearl and Marina? I am waiting on this.
Advance Wars deserves more coverage, I hope. Unless it’s terrible.
I really wanted more gameplay from Zelda. I preordered.
The Gameboy stuff is ok, but it would be nice to know Nintendo’s plan here with the 3ds store closing next month. Is there a strategy? Currently it looks like throw out a random smattering of games every so often. I’m still interested because they showed Golden Sun.
Wow. I agreed with so many here. The Zelda trailer was for me the least exciting. I was hoping for more details and I didn’t get it. First time I have felt any hesitation on this game.
@MetalKingShield one of the best things I did for myself was get a third party controller (in my case a Hori Split Pad Pro) for portable mode. I have gone through 7 instances of drift repair (multiple JoyCons and multiple Pro Controllers). I have one Pro Controller that still works (out of 3). Not sure what I will do if that one fails.
Never experienced this on any other system and I have been gaming for decades.
Alt-Title: Nintendo wins; Consumers Lose. Sub: Nintendo lawyers argues EULA allows them to sell crap hardware and win in court.
Shocked anyone is defending Nintendo on this. (1) PEOPLE! Almost everyone here on this site loves Nintendo products! That’s why they are deep in the comments. As a parent it has been so frustrating seeing my elementary school age children deal with drift. (2) This lawsuit is part of the reason Nintendo of America offered to do “free” JoyCon repair. So if you have used it, thank those parents for standing up to this company. (3) The free repairs are not universal. It’s not across the world. And it’s at minimum a couple of weeks without your controllers. Fyi, it also doesn’t cover Pro Controller drift which, yes, is a thing. (4) The 2023 hardware still has a 2017 defect. So you might need this program in the future. And.. how long do you think the repair program will last?
Whenever you take something as complex as a video game and ask people to collapse all their thoughts and feelings to a single numeric score, well, there is no “right way” to do that. anything goes.
I have just started P3P on Switch. So far it’s a great port. If you want to rank that, rank that high. I also like the game. And I think it’s a decent rerelease at a reasonable price. It’s more like a Pixel Remaster than anything like a remake or legendary edition. Do I want some kind of ultimate release that combines the best of P3P and FES? Maybe. But that’s not what I am judging here.
Maybe but needs work. BotW made inventory management a huge deal and it was a worse game because of that. So my two tweaks to their fomula: (1) ancient special weapons such as for beating a boss don’t break. Maybe they aren’t the strongest possible but they are sufficient. (2) let me earn the power to climb in the rain for the love! and (3) bonus pretty-please: take a page from Spiderman and let me switch between playing as Link and Zelda to save Hyrule.
If you get into the second or third palace in P5R and hate it, well, it probably isn’t going to get better for you. It takes a while to really build the core gameplay loop and if you don’t like that, well, #shruggie … that is ok! Enjoy your other games!
Yes, buying both. Already played P4G (PC) and P5R (PS5, Switch) and I want them portable. I am hoping for confirmation of resolution and fps. I would expect 720p60 handheld 1080p60 docked.
Yes. The OS in particular feels unloved and spartan (euphemism for barely there, minimal, and lacking development and refinement). The eShop lags and feels fragile. The pricing model has been static (family sharing? Nintendo Selects?) why is MarioKart 8 not just free at this point? The online models and backwards compatibility ideas need more fleshing out. I mean… voice chat for multiplayer anyone? The hardware is OK but they need to (1) fix the controllers so they don’t drift (2) add some tech to support temporal upscaling and get some freaking basic anti-aliasing into their games. I love the Switch but the Steam Deck has answers to every single problem I just listed and it’s one year old.
(Edit/add: the Switch can clearly do beautiful games. BotW. Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Witcher 3. Etc. it’s going to put out impressive stuff this year. It will continue to have great games. It’s just I am starting to play those 3rd party games on other platforms bc those platforms are becoming more compelling, faster.)
@cyrus_zuo definitely feels like something has changed. The games are still strong but the platform feels weaker. I was just downloading a 3DS game and I forgot how delightful the UI is.
No major surprises. Haru gets the least time to be a compelling, proactive character. I like her better in Strikers. But, then again, I like all the characters more the more I play the game (working on third playthrough, first on Switch).
Now I need an extended poll to include non-mains cause … Sae Niijima, Tae Takemi, and Sadayo Kawakami got me and are clearly the best. 😇
I think Nintendo’s first party releases this year were pretty weak overall. Switch, the platform, however still had a bunch of interesting games.
Next year I look forward to Zelda, and maybe Advance Wars, Pikmin, or Metroid? I welcome updates to Mario Kart and Splatoon 3. And third party content will keep me busy too. P3P and P4G in January! Yay.
But I already have a massive backlog on each system such that if I stopped buying games I would still be busy well into 2024. Lol.
@Purgatorium I hope the theme for the year is “stupid NFTs, stay out of my videogames ”
I think some basic themes: E3 is dead, open world is here to stay, DLC becomes a planned part of most AAA launches, buggy launches continue, we are still cross gen and will be for a while longer, and SteamDeck was a huge success and will be a new common form factor for gaming.
And my take on Nintendo 2022 is that this was an off year for them and they are trying to recover from the pandemic. I saw more news about the Mario movie and their theme parks than I expected. Two Pokemon games in a year was weird. I also did way less Switch this year than expected. Was planning on getting Pokemon Violet and then saw the bugs and decided to wait.

Re: Poll: Breath Of The Wild Vs. Tears Of The Kingdom - Which Final Zelda Trailer Was Better?
It’s odd to see the comments so heavy on BOTW but the poll showing TOTK leading.
Both were very strong trailers, each promising specific gameplay advances (open world, gliding, climbing anything) (building, falling a lot).

If you get into the second or third palace in P5R and hate it, well, it probably isn’t going to get better for you. It takes a while to really build the core gameplay loop and if you don’t like that, well, #shruggie … that is ok! Enjoy your other games!
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden On Switch
Yes, buying both. Already played P4G (PC) and P5R (PS5, Switch) and I want them portable. I am hoping for confirmation of resolution and fps. I would expect 720p60 handheld 1080p60 docked.
Re: Video: Does The Switch Actually Feel 'Old' Yet?
Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally
Physical for Switch because Switch lacks family sharing. I wish they would catch up to Steam or Apple.
Re: Here Are Metacritic's Highest-Rated Switch Games Of 2022
@iLikeUrAttitude if you like turn based jrpgs… Persona is pretty fantastic.
Re: Here Are Metacritic's Highest-Rated Switch Games Of 2022
@cyrus_zuo definitely feels like something has changed. The games are still strong but the platform feels weaker. I was just downloading a 3DS game and I forgot how delightful the UI is.
Re: Atlus Reveals Most Popular Persona 5 Royal Character In Official Poll
No major surprises. Haru gets the least time to be a compelling, proactive character. I like her better in Strikers. But, then again, I like all the characters more the more I play the game (working on third playthrough, first on Switch).
Now I need an extended poll to include non-mains cause … Sae Niijima, Tae Takemi, and Sadayo Kawakami got me and are clearly the best. 😇
Re: Soapbox: If You Thought Last Year Was "Sad" For Switch, 2023 Might Be Hard To Handle
Lol.
Re: Talking Point: What Was The Video Gaming 'Theme' Of 2022?
