huh? The pricing is just strange. If you are still playing Animal Crossing then the sub is.. ok? Fine? And maybe it will bring some people back to ACNH, but it’s kind of a year late. This would have sold bonkers last summer.
Apart from that, I just don’t see how old games from 30 years ago are worth $30-50 a year. It’s a really tiny catalog too.
Bwah ha ha. That pricing is sooooo Nintendo. What is worse is they will probably bundle these all together in a few years and offend half the people who pay for this service.
I would rather invest my game $$ in almost other way. I had my time with N64.. it could have been a nice bonus to encourage me to keep my switch membership but that’s its limit for me.
Meanwhile people are buying GamePass and PSN subscriptions — for less than the price hike — and getting a totally different (imo better) level of deals. Heck 1 year of Apple Arcade is $50.
I play Splatoon 2, mostly coop mode (Grizzco) & when there are Grizzco weapons.
I don’t think the game does a great job of balancing which is why I like coop. I also wish, like with ACNH, Nintendo supported it longer. Splatfests. More DLC. Etc.
Get excited we Nintendo will offer a small selection of old games — that you can find elsewhere and some we have already enhanced on other systems — for an unknown amount of money that we will announce at some point in the future. Yay!….
I wonder what their marketing dept thinks they can sell this for and how many will pay. I think they should just mildly jack up the price of NSO if they are so cash strapped. I don’t imagine many people paying more than $1-2/month for this.
This moves makes sense to me. It is just treating depictions of gambling as more serious. Should other things like lootboxes also be treated as more serious? Yes. Does this labelling change really prevent anyone from playing a particular game? No. So. shrug.
10 hours means I probably need something chill like FF6/7, Hollow Knight, Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Persona, etc. love the many ideas in the comments. I have the Ocarina of Time orchestrated soundtrack and it is very soothing.
Nintendo isn’t facing an existential crises so long as they keep making good games. That said, they might lose some sales of third party games or have to be more competitive with Steam pricing for 3rd party sales (take a smaller cut, allow deeper discounts, make a better store). This is a win for consumers.
@SigmaNoire The pro controller gets drift so this is bad advice. In fact for US-based players this advice is even worse because the pro controller doesn’t have the same warranty coverage. If I get drift with a joy con I can send it in free of charge to Nintendo and they’ll send me a replacement in a little over a week. I’ve done it twice now. There is nothing comparable for a pro controller
Not loving the new graphics. The 3d looks like free to play mobile. The characters bounce animations during combat remind me of Scribblenauts and look cheap. And I swear intentionally or not the characters are whiter and more bubblegum.
I have had errors for failed updates but found that going into the game specific options (+) and updating from there works every time for me.
Playing coop Stardew with my kids. It’s pretty great. The coop mode is a little tough for new players because menus don’t pause time (unless you both are in a menu) so you are almost never safe, but it’s countered by amazing online resources and having a second player to earn money and resources.
@Abeedo yes the art style does look like a big downgrade and I have been trying to figure out why it bothers me so much. I think a large part of it is the new characters look like cheap bubblegum pop Flash animation and less like the like the edgy anime characters that appealed to me as an early teen. Despite that I’m excited that the series is getting some attention and maybe it will lead to a real follow up.
Beat the main game. Going through Ng+. My main tips are (1) pick exercises you like and be careful not to hurt yourself because the game doesn’t do a good enough job protecting you from repetitive motion injuries (2) be especially careful and choosey with the bonus stages and don’t worry about 100% ing everything and (3) use smoothies liberally. I would love a sequel where it dynamically adapts the levels to what you have already played and lets you calibrate exercise/attack specific settings (eg 5 reps of this really hard exercise for me = 20 of this easier one). Nowadays I use RFA to augment my other workouts. I think it’s a great game and I love how it doesn’t body shame. That storyline is kinda awesome.
Point: “Tying a QOL feature to a limited edition physical toy is a bad deal for consumers. They are already charging $60 for a minor remake.” Counter-point? “Nintendo is a company and they can do whatever they want. And Nintendo has done way worse in the past.”
I canceled my preorder. I keep hearing the game wasn’t that good, it’s a modest remaster already at full price, and then I see the team holding out key improvements and locking them to a $25 toy that will sell out and I think... I will get Mass Effect Legendary Edition instead.
Such weird quotes. One, he didn’t say Nintendo was making more games, just that there would be more. Well, sure, they run an app store. There are always new games on Switch. Two, if he wants to focus on the drop in people playing Animal Crossing or Splatoon.. well .. maybe they could keep running new monthly Splatfests (since that’s basically free) and maybe keep adding more value and multiplayer engagement to Animal Crossing which made them 💰 and make Animal Crossing kinder to those who don’t play every day. When you shame your players who play once or twice a week, you shouldn’t expect them to keep playing. 🤷♀️
Grabbed the three Labo sets (not the VR one) for $20 each and that helped my kids when schools were closed during lockdown last Spring. They were awesome and I love that Nintendo just did this. I hope for more weirdness in the future.
@Sakaixx you didn’t read what I wrote. I do not like what Nintendo did and I am not defending them. I am saying I think this dev’s opinion is wrong. I then gave what I think is a better way to approach the problem.
I think this dev is wrong. I mean, yes, it is one of the effects of their choice but I don’t believe that is why they did it. It’s difficult to judge intentions but I think this dev is assuming they are deliberately manipulating the public for money. I think that is a very negative and cynical viewpoint. I don’t think they are that crafty. In this case, take Nintendo’s explanation at face value. I think leadership really has convinced themselves that it’s a way to celebrate something. I think it’s dumb and they can’t clearly see the difference between an in-person event with limited release items and the digital world which they have struggled to utilize for the past two decades. I think they see the negative internet coverage as a sign they are doing something correct — they are leaving future digital sales on the table. I think the right question to ask Nintendo isn’t “why did you do it?” it’s “Nintendo has long been accused of creating artificial scarcity around its products. This is obviously a case of Nintendo doing just that. What would Nintendo say to future Nintendo Switch owners who can only purchase 3D All Stars from scalpers at double the MSRP because of your choice to remove it from the eShop?”
fantastic support for the beginning of covid lockdown. kept family sane. but over time the appointment style gaming got to me and I quit. Everyone is different but my entertainment has to match my needs and schedule, not vice-versa.
I was worried the art signaled a more simplified gameplay style. That fear was validated somewhat, but Zelda has stayed Zelda. And thank goodness as we now look forward to BotW 2. (Simplified gaming is pervasive elsewhere such as mobile games so this was no idle threat or false concern!)
Maybe gaming websites could try to tackle this by pushing back on wild developer claims or coming up with a rating system? I am tempted to use Cyberpunk as an example, but I will go way back to a hugely terrible game from 1998: Trespasser Jurassic Park. In hindsight it was obvious they could never deliver, but the media just amplified the company’s PR department. They shared the fake screenshots some of which were just 3d Studio Max renders, they shared the fake music that never made it to the game, the fake descriptions of the physics and simulation systems that no computer in 1998 could pull off, they participated in interviews where the game was described in glowing detail. No one questioned whether it was possible, realistic, or tried to find evidence that the company’s claims were truthful. And the game came out and it was a disaster. It was obvious people were misled. Deliberately. There was too much missing or wrong. That was 23 years ago and we have not evolved much! Will game media ever own any responsibility for the hype? I think they are just too afraid they will lose access (to those companies) and ad revenue. NintendoLife could write things like “Splatoon 3 concept video shows possible new gameplay. Visuals probably will match what was shown, but it was a very early mockup that wasn’t running on the Switch per the disclaimer at the trailer start. We think it’s likely set for a mid to late 2022 release given the early state of the trailer and the ongoing pandemic which has greatly disrupted Nintendo’s software development approach. A delay would not be shocking. It’s likely many things shown in this trailer will change as they try to balance the various character sets and weapons. None of that testing has likely started yet. Hype Factor: 4 Warios. Take with a huge grain of salt”
@SwitchVogel Game publishers could choose not to put out dumb shallow teasers, games that are just concepts (project blob. coming sometime!), or concept art and trailers. I can only conclude they announce stuff because they like the free advertising. Also, game journalists could not just amplify company PR by putting less credible announcements in context or not running it above the fold. But they do because they like the clicky clicks. So yes, of course, the onus is on every individual — because no company or organization is motivated to change —each game must protect themselves from manipulation by both gaming companies and media outlets.
I want a Zelda Master Collection or substantial remasters/remakes at 1080p60. Run the textures through ai upscaling or remodel things. Orchestrated music. Add trophy challenges and make something like Persona’s “Thieves Den” with art, movies, music but set in Lon Lon Ranch. Golden cartridge.
But clearly we are getting some ports of ports and I will probably buy those. I can dream!
I have a love-hate relationship with it. World, atmosphere, soundtrack, puzzles, lore, storytelling all good. The problem for me was the gameplay. Almost every timeloop movie has a montage scene which highlights funny differences in each loop. Outer Wilds has no “skip ahead” feature so any mistake and you have to repeat the full 22 minute loop. It sucked a lot of life out of the title. I want to believe that feature is there and I just missed it. It’s really easy to die in this game.
Surreal reading people saying they don’t want one, Nintendo should not or will not make one, and that it would be futile. I upgraded my N64’s RAM because you had to, to play Majora’s Mask. I mean, come on now.
I want to add NintendoLife you got my engagement but do you even believe this person’s opinion? Like ok some rando dev says something. Is that news? Do they have any inside knowledge? Do you have any pushback? Has any successful Nintendo system not had hardware revisions? Switch already got one two years ago, is another that unlikely?
Higher res using combo of faster clocks and DLSS (as the only console using Nvidia), faster loading, cheaper to make for Nintendo so it prints more money, and a terrible name like “Super Nintendo Switch.” Cynic in me says Joycon drift still not addressed.
Switch Pro would have DLSS upscaling — which is a no brainer — but it could just have more power in general (faster loads, smoother framerates, reduced jaggies). Maybe better Joycons and a sleeker dock. Or some new weird input hardware that no one has mentioned. A lot of people would pay for niceties like 60fps BotW at 1440p and Witcher at 720p portable.
Oh and to add.. if you have a Switch and one other system chances are you can play the vast majority of any Top Games of 2020. That’s why “rival” isn’t the best word choice.
Nintendo makes good games enough so that people put up with all their company’s defects (insane lawyers that attack the fanbase, hardware failures, weak online offerings). That’s how it has been for decades. As long as they make a good Zelda game people will pay hundreds of dollars to play it regardless of how “powerful” other systems are. It’s a good situation for them.
@Heavyarms55 I think there are some really interesting lines of thought to consider. Are certain games or genres more likely to cause it to happen? I played a lot of Splatoon and both my Pro Controllers failed in <2 years. My kids share a Switch and the left joy con failed after 18 months. Were they too aggressive in Minecraft? What percentage of players are aware that it’s a common issue? Yes, it’s all over the internets but as a parent there I know many kids don’t have parents researching and solving technical problems for them. I wonder how many lack words to describe why their controller is being weird. What percentage of owners decide not to use Nintendo’s repair service? I want to to stick it to them, but I don’t want to lose my controllers for a month. I considered buying a new set, but I object on principle. I can’t spend $70 for a new set of controllers that might break. You can comfort yourself that 9/10 people are fine, but with tens of millions of Switch owners that would be millions of joy con failures. It’s bad.
It’s amazing how many people attack those who are suing Nintendo over this or have experienced drift on their Joy Cons or Pro Controller. This is a documented issue with $80 controllers and some of you are defending the company over the consumer. Why? Just why? Are you Nintendo lawyers in disguise coming here to grief anonymously? Let the lawsuit proceed on its merits and the courts can sort it out. Go learn about drift. Stop attacking random people you don’t know on social media. Stop prioritizing large billion dollar companies over people. Nintendo can fix this if they want to.
just finished Bugsnax and it hit some of my Pokemon needs. Doesn’t have battles or leveling, but good creatures, worldbuilding, and a wonderful story/characters. I would like to see a Pokemon game go smaller. Get lost in Viridian Forest and have an adventure.
1. As long as there are other options and the terms are clear, I am fine with it though I suspect this 1 off cloud approach won’t work long term. I see Control on Switch as an experiment that won’t scale. 2. There are going to be tradeoffs with cloud streaming. It’s not the best of all worlds. The gaming press should get ahead of it and start talking to other industries and analysts to help gamers think through what is about to happen and the consequences. I wonder how cloud streaming will affect game development. Will console games become shorter in length? (parallel with how Netflix isn’t make 7 season long series anymore — they want us captive to their platform not a particular show). Etc.
I wanted so badly to like this game. The animation is gorgeous. I love Studio Ghibli. I found the battle system frustrating. And I didn’t enjoy the exploration, side quests, or character collecting. So basically all of the gameplay. There is so much backtracking. The game is quite challenging even at the lowest difficulty setting. I realized 10-15 hours in that I was really just pushing to get to the next cutscene.
Love it, play it every 3 days or so for 30 minutes, want a sequel.
-Make exercises have an independent difficulty setting (some are way harder than others) -More forgiving system when the Joycons don’t register properly. So many failed mini games and extra challenging workouts that encourage pain/cheating/bad form to win. -More beyond New Game++. I would gladly pay for DLC.

Re: Nintendo's Doug Bowser Talks About Switch Joy-Con Drift
It’s bad.
Re: Nintendo's Doug Bowser Talks About Switch Joy-Con Drift
@Heavyarms55 there hasn’t been a study of what percentage fail (though Nintendo probably knows). A 10% fail rate (in say 1 year) would be massive.
Re: Nintendo Is Facing Another Class Action Lawsuit For Joy-Con Drift
It’s amazing how many people attack those who are suing Nintendo over this or have experienced drift on their Joy Cons or Pro Controller. This is a documented issue with $80 controllers and some of you are defending the company over the consumer. Why? Just why? Are you Nintendo lawyers in disguise coming here to grief anonymously? Let the lawsuit proceed on its merits and the courts can sort it out. Go learn about drift. Stop attacking random people you don’t know on social media. Stop prioritizing large billion dollar companies over people. Nintendo can fix this if they want to.
Re: Soapbox: Here's How I'd Fix The Pokémon Series
just finished Bugsnax and it hit some of my Pokemon needs. Doesn’t have battles or leveling, but good creatures, worldbuilding, and a wonderful story/characters. I would like to see a Pokemon game go smaller. Get lost in Viridian Forest and have an adventure.
Re: Control's eShop Page Reminds Us About Harsh Realities Of A Cloud-Based Future
Etc.
Re: Deals: Level-5's Gorgeous Ghibli RPG Ni no Kuni Has 84 Percent Hacked Off Its eShop Price [Europe]
Re: Poll: One Year Later, How Are You Getting On With Ring Fit Adventure?
Love it, play it every 3 days or so for 30 minutes, want a sequel.
-Make exercises have an independent difficulty setting (some are way harder than others)
-More forgiving system when the Joycons don’t register properly. So many failed mini games and extra challenging workouts that encourage pain/cheating/bad form to win.
-More beyond New Game++. I would gladly pay for DLC.
