Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Super Mario RPG

koffing

I preordered. I just want Nintendo to start doing more accessibility options. That’s my only gripe. Charge me $60 for a new coat of paint on an old game PLUS accessibility. I love options to eliminate or reduce button mashing and timing based minigames.

Make it so I can play these games with arthritis so if I get that when I am old I can still enjoy it. And so my little ones can enjoy it now.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Wins Nintendo GOTY At Golden Joystick Awards 2023

koffing

Nintendo had a stellar year with ToTK, Pikmin 4, and Super Mario Wonder and a bunch of other games I’m forgetting/omitting.

I wish this particular awards venue had made more categories to acknowledge just how many phenomenal games were released this year. It’s abnormal and it’s been awesome.

Nintendo deserves more awards. So does Sony. So do many other publishers and devs. Props to all.

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Is Officially The "Fastest-Selling" Super Mario Title Ever

koffing

Bought it just based on reviews. It’s the most exciting 2d Mario (imo) since the SNES. It’s phenomenal.

That said, I hope Nintendo will actually add more accessibility features and at least let me remove the multiplayer “feature” where party control shifts to whoever got the most points in the most recent level. And I would love to see journalists call for more accessibility when they get N on record.

Re: Digital Foundry Digs Into The Nvidia Chip Rumoured To Power 'Switch 2'

koffing

@rjejr it depends what the game is doing. The choice is better pixels (advanced lighting, shading) vs more pixels (resolution, frames per second) and that also competes with game complexity (ai, physics, game logic, object/item management).

I think the promise with Switch 2 is “can run ports of UE5 games but at low quality” vs Switch which just can’t.

Re: Talking Point: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom DLC - What Would You Have Liked To See?

koffing

I expect dlc for the Switch 2 uhd version of the game.

DLC I want is item duplication powers and a few legendary unbreakable items. I don’t want more costumes, I want fewer where your look doesn’t have to match your set power. Maybe via accessories? I just need to never slip in the rain again.

I don’t want Zelda as the main character in DLC — I want her as the main playable character in a full game. But bring back beloved minor characters from previous Zelda games and have Link partner with them for quests and that would be awesome.

Re: Final Fantasy's Pixel Remaster Series Has Now Sold Three Million Copies

koffing

@LastFootnote wow, I disagree. There is judder (or I don’t know what to call it with FF6 remaster) but I played it on my PS5 and an OLED screen and it was a little annoying and they should fix it but I would never go back to the old version that I have on my SNES classic.

Being able to turn off random battles and up EXP and MP alone made this game so much more enjoyable for me personally. The new soundtrack, trophies, artwork, and updated graphics are all pretty good bonuses too. I think the censorship was dumb so I guess I’d complain a little about that. I think overall the new version just takes what I remember from playing this beautiful game 25 years ago and modernizes it a bit and makes playing it more like I fondly remember.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's New Update Targets Item Duplication Glitches, Unsurprisingly

koffing

Just imagine if Nintendo devs stopped being so reactionary and defensive and spent their dev time on something meaningful.

  • Release an official way to do item duplication or charge for it with a special amiibo or sidequest.
  • Nintendo could spends its millions of earnings from this title on anything else — literally anything else would be a better use of time. New costumes, better performance, the DLC, a different DLC, more DLC content, better giveaways, etc.

When you spend your energies going after nonsense you are deprioritizing other things that are more valuable and everyone loses. So even the 50+% on this site that say they don’t use item duplication are also missing out bc of whacked priorities.

Re: The FTC Doesn't Seem To Think Switch Is A Serious PlayStation & Xbox Competitor

koffing

I’m not sure the FTC is wrong. 🤔

Switch has done well with indies but third party “AAA” games aren’t a big thing on Switch. Nintendo simply found a different market segment — who wanted Nintendo games above all else — similar to when Prego introduced “extra chunky” tomato sauce in the 1970s (see Howard Moskowitz). Nintendo has been on that trajectory for 18 years now and found that, with Switch, playing console quality Nintendo games anywhere — portability — was a huge success.

The counter-argument is they are at minimum overlapping market segments that compete for similar attention and money — and many Microsoft games run on Switch — and it’s weird to think of it as an either-or proposition.

Re: Nintendo Infographic Showcases The Games Featured In June's Direct

koffing

Mario kart dlc, Super Mario RPG (for my kids), and Super Mario Wonder because it’s weird.

I hope FaeFarm is good and I’d love Pikmin 4 to be great — I’m not big on tactical games anymore but I loved Pikmin 1 on Gamecube.

I’m mostly holding off on new Switch games until I get clarity from Nintendo on Switch 2. That might sound insane but I have other gaming systems that keep me busy.

Re: Soapbox: How Zelda's Bad Economy Made Weapon Degradation Great Again

koffing

@Uncle_Franklin yep. And that’s why item duplication is great. It fights overpriced armor so I get to use it in the game.

On weapon degradation, I think the issue is with the master items like your Master Sword and the special weapons (Great Eagle Bow, etc). It doesn’t make narrative sense — here is the God Weapon that you earned by … oh! Gee! It’s TiReD and needs to rEsT! And it makes Link less powerful which at that point in the game is imo a blight on the storytelling.

I have the same issue in Animal Crossing when you earn the gold tools and they break.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Desperately Needs A Rival, But Who's Big Enough To Take It On?

koffing

It has to be close enough to Pokemon that you see it as competition but different enough that it’s not just Pokemon and also clearly better? That’s a tough market space to be in.

I expect something fresh and indie (like Cassette Beasts) to come along and offer serious alternative choices. Kids who grew up on Pokemon are making games now. Buy them! Also as a journalist use your voice to promote indies and address publishing nonsense like companies deciding on preorders alone whether a game is a success as well as call Nintendo/GameFreak out for bad practices.
