I preordered. I just want Nintendo to start doing more accessibility options. That’s my only gripe. Charge me $60 for a new coat of paint on an old game PLUS accessibility. I love options to eliminate or reduce button mashing and timing based minigames.
Make it so I can play these games with arthritis so if I get that when I am old I can still enjoy it. And so my little ones can enjoy it now.
@Princess_Lilly yes. They have so many good titles but this year I want more! It was a tremendous year in gaming. I want a “best entry in a long running series” award so Trails from Reverie could be nominated and imo win.
Nintendo had a stellar year with ToTK, Pikmin 4, and Super Mario Wonder and a bunch of other games I’m forgetting/omitting.
I wish this particular awards venue had made more categories to acknowledge just how many phenomenal games were released this year. It’s abnormal and it’s been awesome.
Nintendo deserves more awards. So does Sony. So do many other publishers and devs. Props to all.
Bought it just based on reviews. It’s the most exciting 2d Mario (imo) since the SNES. It’s phenomenal.
That said, I hope Nintendo will actually add more accessibility features and at least let me remove the multiplayer “feature” where party control shifts to whoever got the most points in the most recent level. And I would love to see journalists call for more accessibility when they get N on record.
@rjejr it depends what the game is doing. The choice is better pixels (advanced lighting, shading) vs more pixels (resolution, frames per second) and that also competes with game complexity (ai, physics, game logic, object/item management).
I think the promise with Switch 2 is “can run ports of UE5 games but at low quality” vs Switch which just can’t.
For me the top three are: (1) working hardware with decent warranties (looking at my two drifting defective $70 “pro” controllers 😭 ) (2) is family sharing for digital games and dlc (3) eliminating or reducing online checks for proof of ownership (airplane flights with “secondary” switches suck)
I expect dlc for the Switch 2 uhd version of the game.
DLC I want is item duplication powers and a few legendary unbreakable items. I don’t want more costumes, I want fewer where your look doesn’t have to match your set power. Maybe via accessories? I just need to never slip in the rain again.
I don’t want Zelda as the main character in DLC — I want her as the main playable character in a full game. But bring back beloved minor characters from previous Zelda games and have Link partner with them for quests and that would be awesome.
@LastFootnote wow, I disagree. There is judder (or I don’t know what to call it with FF6 remaster) but I played it on my PS5 and an OLED screen and it was a little annoying and they should fix it but I would never go back to the old version that I have on my SNES classic.
Being able to turn off random battles and up EXP and MP alone made this game so much more enjoyable for me personally. The new soundtrack, trophies, artwork, and updated graphics are all pretty good bonuses too. I think the censorship was dumb so I guess I’d complain a little about that. I think overall the new version just takes what I remember from playing this beautiful game 25 years ago and modernizes it a bit and makes playing it more like I fondly remember.
I don’t see why this is a big deal. Companies can price their games at whatever at launch. Unless they are Nintendo which doesn’t really do sales anymore, prices drop fast. Let’s just see what happens. Run an article on historical PS4 prices from launch to 12 months post-release.
@KingdomTears yes.and everytime I see those kinds of so-called-debates I think of https://xkcd.com/386/ and try to do the opposite. The goal is to have fun and enjoy our short time on this planet (yay gaming!), not spend it arguing about the “right” way to play.
Just imagine if Nintendo devs stopped being so reactionary and defensive and spent their dev time on something meaningful.
Release an official way to do item duplication or charge for it with a special amiibo or sidequest.
Nintendo could spends its millions of earnings from this title on anything else — literally anything else would be a better use of time. New costumes, better performance, the DLC, a different DLC, more DLC content, better giveaways, etc.
When you spend your energies going after nonsense you are deprioritizing other things that are more valuable and everyone loses. So even the 50+% on this site that say they don’t use item duplication are also missing out bc of whacked priorities.
Switch has done well with indies but third party “AAA” games aren’t a big thing on Switch. Nintendo simply found a different market segment — who wanted Nintendo games above all else — similar to when Prego introduced “extra chunky” tomato sauce in the 1970s (see Howard Moskowitz). Nintendo has been on that trajectory for 18 years now and found that, with Switch, playing console quality Nintendo games anywhere — portability — was a huge success.
The counter-argument is they are at minimum overlapping market segments that compete for similar attention and money — and many Microsoft games run on Switch — and it’s weird to think of it as an either-or proposition.
Mario kart dlc, Super Mario RPG (for my kids), and Super Mario Wonder because it’s weird.
I hope FaeFarm is good and I’d love Pikmin 4 to be great — I’m not big on tactical games anymore but I loved Pikmin 1 on Gamecube.
I’m mostly holding off on new Switch games until I get clarity from Nintendo on Switch 2. That might sound insane but I have other gaming systems that keep me busy.
No please no. Spend your time on new games not redoing the 1990s.
Pixel Remaster is great — just fix frame pacing (there’s a stutter when scrolling because of pixel movement vs frame updates don’t sync). Maybe add a NG+ option. It doesn’t need anything.
@YoshiF2 TotK and BotW have very simple stories relative to the percentage of time spent traversing and existing in the open world environments. So, yeah, it’s very different. But not wrong or broken. Traversal is more joyful in Totk and that is a huge percentage of time.
@Uncle_Franklin yep. And that’s why item duplication is great. It fights overpriced armor so I get to use it in the game.
On weapon degradation, I think the issue is with the master items like your Master Sword and the special weapons (Great Eagle Bow, etc). It doesn’t make narrative sense — here is the God Weapon that you earned by … oh! Gee! It’s TiReD and needs to rEsT! And it makes Link less powerful which at that point in the game is imo a blight on the storytelling.
I have the same issue in Animal Crossing when you earn the gold tools and they break.
Nintendo will give you daily free items in Zelda if you pay them. I’ve never heard anyone call that cheating. What makes item duplication cheating but Amiibos not?
It has to be close enough to Pokemon that you see it as competition but different enough that it’s not just Pokemon and also clearly better? That’s a tough market space to be in.
I expect something fresh and indie (like Cassette Beasts) to come along and offer serious alternative choices. Kids who grew up on Pokemon are making games now. Buy them! Also as a journalist use your voice to promote indies and address publishing nonsense like companies deciding on preorders alone whether a game is a success as well as call Nintendo/GameFreak out for bad practices.
I love that you start with a map, no compasses, and leave at any time. Theming was better. Bosses were more fun. I don’t miss the old temples. I just need want even more traditional Zelda music for those temples.
Duplication is awesome. Between that and Amiibos I always have basic needs met and can spend my time using the shops, staying at the inns, and still getting armor. Oh yeah and doing all the other game things. BotW and TotK make you poor all the time (Totk does better but still never enough rupees)

They have a lot of information about the Switch 2 hardware and modern gaming technology. Did you watch their 30+ min breakdown of the GTA 6 tech?
Re: Soapbox: Ganondorf's Villainous Intro In Ocarina Of Time Is One Of Gaming's Best
@Spider-Kev Ocarina was my first Zelda game so I didn’t know anything. And it. was. amazing. 1998 was another great year for gaming.

Plague Tale 2
Venba
Trails into Reverie
Planet of Lana
Chained Echoes (late 2022 depending on your cutoff date)

@Princess_Lilly yes. They have so many good titles but this year I want more! It was a tremendous year in gaming. I want a “best entry in a long running series” award so Trails from Reverie could be nominated and imo win.
Re: Soapbox: Six Months Later, Tears Of The Kingdom's Sense Of Wonder Is Still Unmatched
Loved ToTK even though I took a break and haven’t “completed” it.
I especially enjoyed using ToTk and TikTok for the first week or so before the normies were drowned out by the monetizers and speedrunners.
Phenomenal game for the best year in gaming maybe ever.

Means something like we showed 5 game demos, not four.
Re: Video: We Compare Super Mario RPG On Switch To The SNES Original
@mercilessrobot thank you! The new font is bad. Not FF Pixel Remaster bad, but close.

Switch 2 needs HDR support regardless of whether it’s outputting at 4k or 1440p or 720p.
Re: Talking Point: Along With Joy-Con Drift, What Does Nintendo Have To 'Fix' With 'Switch 2'?

OooOoooo I forgot !!
Bring back actual sales on old Nintendo games and systems!
How is Mario Kart 8 $45-60 ?? Come on! I miss Nintendo Selects.
Re: Talking Point: Along With Joy-Con Drift, What Does Nintendo Have To 'Fix' With 'Switch 2'?

If no to both questions, have fun! Whatever that means to you. It’s your game that you paid for.

@koffing adding — https://kotaku.com/tears-of-the-kingdom-totk-zelda-armor-1850621472 —examples of things Nintendo devs could be doing instead of going after duplication bugs used by a tiny minority of players.
They could improve the house building experience, add custom button configs (turn off call your horse, remap shortcuts), etc etc

Re: PSA: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom News Channel Giving Out Free In-Game Items
Both bad items and bad timing.
This should have started on launch week, not early July.
Who is this for? Certainly not us 1.1 players but even if I started the game over fully patched, a single Amiibo drop would be far more valuable.
