I would have probably got it on series X by now if I didn’t think the situation with Season Passes and stuff like that was too expensive. So I guess I will be waiting a bit.
@MrGawain Those AI summaries are pretty bad. There is AI mode search also by Google (Separate thing though). I have no sympathy for the quality of slop that appears at the top Google (Under the AI overview). Most so called journalism don’t even state properly where the information came from. I don’t get why linking to other sites is such a problem but it definitely is. (Perhaps they are just copying rumours from each other in which case it is not worthwhile content anyway but being honest about that wouldn’t look very good.) It has got much more difficult to find decent well sourced content. (When I first went online nearly all the content was impartial the people reviewing stuff were putting their own money into it now most sites are just an extension of the marketing departments of the game creators.)
There is other stuff as well like only listing people who they get referral money from under the articles etc. If you look back at this site on the way back machine it used to be so much better.
@MrGawain I think the changes to search engines are mostly welcome. (I use paid perplexity which specifically lists the sources). Can’t see how it devalues anything apart from ad’s which I don’t care for one bit. (Be quite happy with just fan sites like when I first started using the internet don’t really trust reviews when the publisher gives out free games anyway).
I will probably end up all digital (I did for Wii U because I hated the noise you get from spinning disks.) For Switch I was mostly physical but I have recently re bought quite a bit of digital when I have the cartridges already. I find especially for Arcade type games I like to just have one credit and my money has been totally wasted on quite a few carts for that reason.
@Chimichanga I have not picked it up for that reason. £70 would have been okay but I don’t like DLC straight away or digital deluxe nonsense. I tried the play test on Series X but it didn’t grip me like transformed did on PC . (The World Tour was a great way to learn transformed I don’t think spending ages in time trials would keep my attention.) I don’t even know whether I will be interested in it down the line.
@Orpheus79V The problem with the Steam version of Transformed is that there are too many cheaters. (As in have uncapped speed and unlimited fireworks). The Xbox version runs at higher frame rate on series X doesn’t have many players but it doesn’t seem to have tha same issue with hacks.
One choice I don’t understand is using Micro SD Express. (The full size cards are approximately 4 x the speed of the Micro ones). It’s not like with the switch where it makes no difference.
@Sonicka They chose Unity in the past. Rare was good when they targeted a single platform. Maybe it’s understandable if most of their sales are on PC but if most of the money comes from Nintendo players then I think they should make Nintendo the lead platform (and then port it elsewhere afterwards).
Are there any decent Arcade sticks that are not too heavy to use on a lap ? (I have a Hori Real Arcade Pro but it’s too heavy. I want decent sticks/buttons but it’s mainly just for playing Arcade Archives games).
@RupeeClock Those Android versions are based on the Japanese feature phone versions (Which may themselves have been ported from the DS ones) but they are not good no battle animations etc.
They axed most of the localisation people from NoE didn’t they a while back ? My only relatively recent experience with them was getting a 3DS circle pad replaced. (They used a good courier for the pick up but sent the fixed item back with the worst UK courier at the time. (I think I was lucky to not end up with it lost or broken).
The cost is too high for this (and Disney Dreamlight Valley) outside of Apple Arcade. When you are paying for a full priced port (Apple Arcade gets all the new content first) the DLC should be included (Apple Arcade gets the whole thing because DLC isn’t allowed on it).
I wasn’t impressed with the Network Test on Series X. Still might give it a shot but the PC version of All Stars Racing Transformed gripped me straight away and this didn’t. Depends on the single player I think. (If it really spends time to properly help you master the game I think I am in. Didn’t start multiplayer with Transformed until I got the Triple Star License).
@topsekret The difference is the indies have a small print run they know will sell out. Doing a big print run at $23 a cart is a massive risk and to pay for the misses the hits need big print runs. Nintendo doesn’t reprint some stuff frequently (e.g Metroid Prime Remastered). I don’t think all 3rd party games going to the same type of model as LRG is better really.
@Kingy The old cartridges used a different technology. (GBA was last to use that). They are likely to outlast DS/3DS/Switch/Switch 2 carts over many years.
@topsekret They are just adding the cost of the cart to the price more or less. Can see why the other publishers don’t want to do it when they may end up taking a loss (And definitely will make less especially on something that isn’t limited edition enough to sell at Nintendo prices. The 3rd party stuff doesn’t hold its value.)
I am going to get both III HD2D and I&II HD2D on series X but only when I actually am going to start playing them unless there is a 75% or more sale I suppose. They could have their reasons (I.e the Switch 2 version might have better assets so the Switch cart would be just acting as a game key card anyway but I have mine I have yet to notice a problem that particularly bugs me with any of the 3d party / indie games that I have bought on Xbox other than when it has been a 360 or original Xbox.
It was briefly available for just over £40 (£42/£43 can’t remember) yesterday so it it comes up again I guess I will get it. (Totally sell 3D All Stars though as it will no longer have any value to me).
I first completed it without warps on 3DS Virtual Console (Using continues which starts you at the beginning of the world). I first finished it with warps on All Stars SNES.
I don’t remember the music in md tazmania being that bad. Thought it was a pretty good game. If it was that bad I would have thought I would remember it.
@Jujuman More recently than that they had Nintendo Selects. (Wii/Wii U/3DS still had them.) the discounts just got quite a bit worse 25% vs 33%. (At least UK & EU). Still trying to decide whether or not to get Mario Maker 2 digitally on sale or not (I have the cartridge but thought I would play it more as a download). Choosing a finance guy as CEO is working somewhat as expected but the quality is dropping and the price is going up. (As if some parts of the calculations are either deemed unimportant.) Might take a few years but there are knock on effects of poor quality and overcharging. I have gone from probably £1000 on digital first party games. (+ All indies on Nintendo which they were getting a cut from.) to basically maybe 5 first party games a year nearly all cartridges. (Where there is the cartridge cost + distribution + retailer cut). Makes a difference if people think that they have been ripped off in the future. (Like when many people bought a Wii for Wii Sports and that was it they are not immune from a similar situation happening again. Most people having 3 games at the end of the generation vs most people having 30 games obviously makes a big difference.) There is also the issue that digital buyers are subsidising physical purchases and everyone else is subsidising Japan (Cheap consoles and games) and US (tariffs).
@N00BiSH Never played it (Supposedly a pretty good port from the Wii U) but I wouldn’t want to have missed so many of the funny animations by covering the screen with my finger. I am probably one of the 0.5% of people who would buy a Switch 2 version of something similar to the ps portal if about 5 of the best Wii U ports were fixed and it worked with the Switch 2 running as if in docked mode.
(Vita version does seem to be an example of get as much out of the hardware as you can like used to happen rather than lowest common denominator).
@ibookboyuk The problem is that the Murphy bits (Where you cut through ropes and move platforms) which originally used the Wii U touchscreen on the gamepad are just really boring pressing a button.
Maybe it’s not as much of an issue handheld but the bits where you use gyro to twist stuff would suffer a similar problem handheld.
They just didn’t put enough effort in to any of the ports after the initial Wii U version.
I have not enjoyed any of the Murphy bits since the Wii U Original. (I don’t know how they have the cheek to call any of them definitive). I wish they could be disabled entirely. (Or the Switch version restructured into two games one to play on the tv and one handheld). It’s annoying.
@Miseryguts1969 Some games just get boring if they are too long. Nintendo did used to have two classes of game with different price points (Handheld/Home Console). Even excluding (Selects / Players Choice etc). Thinking every game is worth a pretty high amount is a relatively new thing (Accountant CEO / The fact that the only high street games stores don’t tend to sell new). If you look at what Wii U / 3ds / Wii had at lower price points you will find quite a lot by Nintendo). HAL still made Kirby s Dream Buffet. It’s nickel and diming for everything these days. Much rather have some smaller Nintendo games to play. (Switch was advertised as best of both worlds but it turned out to be charge console prices even for what would have been handheld experiences in the past. (Sometimes even a port of a handheld game. We were sold a lie. (No reason we couldn’t have had a £20 Mario vs Donkey Kong game made by a small team sold for a budget price that would have been able to be sold cheaper (Less risk/ costs). When the hardware is weaker and there are hardly any Nintendo First/Exclusives/(Even lead platform timed exclusives there is nothing of value they are helping with this strategy.
@KingMike I thought the PAL super Metroid was 50hz optimized by dropping a frame every so often to keep the speed the same. Was that done with the same rom ? (I am curious how they did it if so).
I hope Retro Endurance 8bit comes to switch (Made by one of the zines authors I also bought that on steam but it’s unplayed (And it’s dirt cheap like £4). I got so much use playing IPs translated rpgs that never hit the uk with zsnes (I bought ff3 and Chrono Trigger (And that junk Lord of the rings game)). But at the time zsnes was the only one fast enough to run on my pc so I support the original author wholeheartedly. (I suspect this game is similar to ufo 50 but I doubt an old school assembler programmer uses gamemaker)
@MontyCircus I am not saying you are not right but I do think the site has been getting worse. When it was just reviewing Wiiware it was the best it’s been. Then when Thomas Whitehead was editor it was well written the reviewers were good (And you got the Nintendo Download updates for at least both Europe and the USA (Which was fine). Now all the real content seems to have gone the number of posts seems to put gossip sites to shame. One decent post could replace 10 useless ones. I only still use the site at all due to habit. (And I am a great fan of time extension which shows that they do know how to make a decent site). Hookshot seems to hate AI but if I could have an AI generated version of this site distilled into a format similar to time extension with Switch Content I would take it. Take a look https://web.archive.org/web/20140228124058/https://www.nintendolife.com/ this was a much better site in the past and had much less pointless slop.
Is there a reason for so much NA content on a British site ? It’s not like there is really an import scene these days. (Except people buying jap eshop titles that I expect will not end well)
I have a hori real arcade pro (Switch 1 - wired) but seen as I play just in an arm chair just in front of my tv its too heavy to be comfortable putting it on my lap. Is there anything with the same quality of buttons / sticks that is light enough to put on your lap or fit across an armchair.
I would go for a 3rd party dock if it managed to output 4k/120hz with hardware based VRR. (No idea if that is possible but the Xbox system wide VRR seems much better than Sony’s). I don’t mind if the Maximum frame rate stays at 60fps but the whole thing just seems to work much better on Xbox with that output. Someone who knows more about this than me can probably explain whether it’s possible.
If VRR can be implemented by Mister I don’t see why a 3rd party dock couldn’t.
@JayJ I don’t necessarily mind them concentrating on later games but I don’t think something like NebulasRay is better than e.g Viper Phase 1. (Happily pay £13.49 for something like Raiden DX) but if they price everything at £13.49 just based on Age I will be buying much less of them. (Or maybe start meticulously trying them out first with Mame or final burn neo).
I have already bought it on Steam (At full price) because I liked the concept but I think I will have to actually bother trying it before buying it again. (Which I probably will do if I am going to play it). Rather use switch SNES Controller for this. Be easier if I could use Linux or Mac as I have better (Desktop) machines. I thought it might not come to consoles at all. Hopefully it works on an 8th gen intel thinkpad. (Only Windows device I have).
How does it compare with Hamster’s Salamander (Which includes both US and JP Life Force).
I have found M2 to be much more hit and miss than other people seem to.
(And I tried Gradius 3 on real hardware recently and it was far too difficult for me. I can’t imagine it has been improved over the proper arcade board with a crt).
With the Famicom did they not have the option to do their own thing. (A choice taken by Konami whose Famicom versions were generally superior then NEE games ?)
The zWii wheel actually made me enjoy Mario Kart Wii much more than I would have I am pretty casual with that game. Sadly with the original mk8 I couldn’t get to grips with the control method at all.
@Lady_rosalina There are other better things about the Wii U (They have the tech to allow using a switch lite as a controller that they use for Gameshare). But at least Rayman Legends/Captain Toad are much more fun with the gamepad controls. Be also nice for off to play in another room without having to move the docked switch. (And the specs are higher docked). I can see why this would not be added specifically but when everything needed exists for other reasons I think they should. (No 2nd screen map for Zelda Games is also a major downgrade if you ask me.

Re: Review: Gradius Origins (Switch) - An Almost-Perfect Package For Shoot 'Em Up Fans
Re: Nintendo Was The Only One Making Steady Revenue On NES, Says Capcom Vet
With the Famicom did they not have the option to do their own thing. (A choice taken by Konami whose Famicom versions were generally superior then NEE games ?)
Re: Shantae's Long Lost GBA Sequel 'Risky Revolution' Gets Switch Release Date
How similar is it to the first one ? I have found the later ones although good looking a poor detail in terms of length.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Wheel - Flawed, But Still Fun
The zWii wheel actually made me enjoy Mario Kart Wii much more than I would have I am pretty casual with that game. Sadly with the original mk8 I couldn’t get to grips with the control method at all.
Re: Nintendo's Official Camera "Attach Rate" With Switch 2 Revealed For US
@Lady_rosalina There are other better things about the Wii U (They have the tech to allow using a switch lite as a controller that they use for Gameshare).
