Re: "Somewhat Mixed" - Digital Foundry Delivers Its Technical Analysis Of Donkey Kong Bananza

I think in this age of people being extremely sensitive online to any sort of criticism of <insert thing they like>, it's worth remembering constructive criticism is actually a good thing and not something you're supposed to get offended by. DF do the technical thing, it's their schtick, they're gonna hyper analyze all the little technical flaws like blocky shadows. And despite all that though, John still looks at the game in non technical ways and even praises it.

I've been playing EoW and haven't found it too bad, and I'm someone that is very sensitive to inconsistent frames and fluctuations. Although I believe as I've come to the game late, I've benefited from it being patched and had performance improvements so it's probably nowhere as bad as it was at launch.

One hopes maybe they'll patch this one too, if it is bad enough.

Re: Switch Port Experts Share Thoughts About Switch 2's "Raw" Performance

If it's anything like the Switch 1, from a purely hardware perspective it probably has a fair bit more power than it actually utilizes. As we know, the SW1's Tegra runs quite a bit underclocked for longevity and battery life. Anyone with a CFW Switch knows you can push those clocks up quite a bit for a nice performance boost, at the obvious negative to heat and battery life.

Of course devs can only work with the standard console as it is out of the box. I'd love if Nintendo included a "Turbo" mode or something, but we know that will never happen.

@RiasGremory no the constant whining does not need to stop, people have a right to protest, especially when they are consumers pouring a ton of money into the industry.

Ultimately it may well be that the majority don't care enough and the market just keeps moving this way, which is a huge shame IMO, but if passionate people keep beating the drum and there's even a 1% chance it helps influence future directions by the third party devs, it's worth it.

Re: Nintendo's Ability To Ban Switch 2 Consoles Has Landed It In Hot Water

It wouldn't be so bad if most games were still physical, but we all know where that's going.

The console might not be technically 'bricked', but Nintendo, no doubt by no coincidence, has made nearly all functional aspects of the console online only. Once banned, it seems the sole online thing that still works is firmware updates. Probably likely just so you can continue updating the console and reduce the chances of it being hacked in future, just to rub salt in the wound and make it more likely to be e-waste.

@Suketoudara interesting, thanks for going to that trouble, I was genuinely interested. I haven't been watching them for too long but the technical analysis stuff has seemed generally decent. But it sounds like like a lot of bigger channels they make some questionable decisions or leaps for views sometimes (like that built-in advert that was mentioned before in this comments section).

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tests Out Switch 2's Free Switch Game Upgrades

@Dunkin exactly. I can never understand being such a fanboy that one has to vehemently defend the thing we like no matter what. It makes no sense, and leaves the consumer open to abuse by the company that makes the thing if we don't give constructive criticism and demand better.

And yeah everything DF has done that I've seen is fair and reasonable.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

eldersnake

@Tryskam I think it's probably something to do with the sunk cost fallacy. It's an expensive console, combine that with the excitement of the thing launching and I'm guessing there's a lot of people who feel the need to defend their 'thing', like they would defend their football team or their child.

I try to be more objective personally. The Switch 2 screen 'looks' decent enough, it will often get the job done for a handheld screen, but there will be times it will fall down - like playing fast side scrolling games like Super Mario World. There's a clear compromise made by Nintendo to cut costs and also keep power consumption down at the same time.

It's not great, but it is what it is. For a lot of the modern 3D games I think it will be OK, but personally for other games where the screen isn't suited I'll be using my OG Switch or my PC.

Re: Video: Switch 2's GameCube Emulation Apparently Has Underlying Issues Nintendo "Desperately Needs To Fix"

eldersnake

@Suketoudara it's constructive criticism and if there's room for improvement that will benefit the user, it's a good thing we have the likes of MVG (and he very much enjoys games I can assure you, but he has a lot of experience in the field and does a lot of tech stuff).

The main thing I noticed personally was the stick sensitivity in F-Zero. Although I don't know if that's purely a GameCube emulation thing, I find the sensitivity of the joystick is also really over the top in menus in something like Yakuza 0 (I have to use the D-Pad to navigate properly).

The drums need to keep beating loudly about this. Yes I know some don't like anything to do with outrage or seeming negativity, but if we just lie down and take it whenever big companies make these sorts of changes that are anti-consumer and anti-preservation, it will keep happening and easily.

The servers of course likely won't switch off "in a few years" but it is a matter of when, not if, they do.
