Re: Switch Port Experts Share Thoughts About Switch 2's "Raw" Performance

eldersnake

If it's anything like the Switch 1, from a purely hardware perspective it probably has a fair bit more power than it actually utilizes. As we know, the SW1's Tegra runs quite a bit underclocked for longevity and battery life. Anyone with a CFW Switch knows you can push those clocks up quite a bit for a nice performance boost, at the obvious negative to heat and battery life.

Of course devs can only work with the standard console as it is out of the box. I'd love if Nintendo included a "Turbo" mode or something, but we know that will never happen.

Re: Switch Port Specialist Believes Switch 2 Can Surpass Its Predecessor's Success

@RiasGremory no the constant whining does not need to stop, people have a right to protest, especially when they are consumers pouring a ton of money into the industry.

Ultimately it may well be that the majority don't care enough and the market just keeps moving this way, which is a huge shame IMO, but if passionate people keep beating the drum and there's even a 1% chance it helps influence future directions by the third party devs, it's worth it.

Re: Nintendo's Ability To Ban Switch 2 Consoles Has Landed It In Hot Water

eldersnake

It wouldn't be so bad if most games were still physical, but we all know where that's going.

The console might not be technically 'bricked', but Nintendo, no doubt by no coincidence, has made nearly all functional aspects of the console online only. Once banned, it seems the sole online thing that still works is firmware updates. Probably likely just so you can continue updating the console and reduce the chances of it being hacked in future, just to rub salt in the wound and make it more likely to be e-waste.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tests Out Switch 2's Free Switch Game Upgrades

eldersnake

@Suketoudara interesting, thanks for going to that trouble, I was genuinely interested. I haven't been watching them for too long but the technical analysis stuff has seemed generally decent. But it sounds like like a lot of bigger channels they make some questionable decisions or leaps for views sometimes (like that built-in advert that was mentioned before in this comments section).

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tests Out Switch 2's Free Switch Game Upgrades

@Dunkin exactly. I can never understand being such a fanboy that one has to vehemently defend the thing we like no matter what. It makes no sense, and leaves the consumer open to abuse by the company that makes the thing if we don't give constructive criticism and demand better.

And yeah everything DF has done that I've seen is fair and reasonable.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

eldersnake

@Tryskam I think it's probably something to do with the sunk cost fallacy. It's an expensive console, combine that with the excitement of the thing launching and I'm guessing there's a lot of people who feel the need to defend their 'thing', like they would defend their football team or their child.

I try to be more objective personally. The Switch 2 screen 'looks' decent enough, it will often get the job done for a handheld screen, but there will be times it will fall down - like playing fast side scrolling games like Super Mario World. There's a clear compromise made by Nintendo to cut costs and also keep power consumption down at the same time.

It's not great, but it is what it is. For a lot of the modern 3D games I think it will be OK, but personally for other games where the screen isn't suited I'll be using my OG Switch or my PC.

Re: Video: Switch 2's GameCube Emulation Apparently Has Underlying Issues Nintendo "Desperately Needs To Fix"

eldersnake

@Suketoudara it's constructive criticism and if there's room for improvement that will benefit the user, it's a good thing we have the likes of MVG (and he very much enjoys games I can assure you, but he has a lot of experience in the field and does a lot of tech stuff).

The main thing I noticed personally was the stick sensitivity in F-Zero. Although I don't know if that's purely a GameCube emulation thing, I find the sensitivity of the joystick is also really over the top in menus in something like Yakuza 0 (I have to use the D-Pad to navigate properly).

Re: Forget Switch 2 Game Key-Cards - "Full On-The-Cart Physical Releases" Are What People Want, Says Publisher Lost In Cult

eldersnake

The drums need to keep beating loudly about this. Yes I know some don't like anything to do with outrage or seeming negativity, but if we just lie down and take it whenever big companies make these sorts of changes that are anti-consumer and anti-preservation, it will keep happening and easily.

The servers of course likely won't switch off "in a few years" but it is a matter of when, not if, they do.

Re: Opinion: I'm Completely In Love With Mario Kart World's Photo Mode

eldersnake

I don't think I'd spend much time with it, but I love seeing people enjoy things at such a level of something that I myself may find mundane.

It reminds me of a video I saw on YouTube where one of the guys in charge of the art direction in the original Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was walking around a real life forest and admiring and getting inspiration from the colours of plants and moss. I don't think I've spent 10 minutes doing such a thing let alone over an hour that he probably was, but he was absolutely in his element and loving it. And I loved seeing that.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"

eldersnake

Just a perfect storm I'd say. Expensive console in the first place, limiting people's immediate outlay of cash for full priced games, game key cards, re-releases instead of much new... etc etc.

The situation will get better in time for the third parties I reckon, though I hope it includes a move away from key-cards. Or IMO key card games should be ever so slightly cheaper than the physical media.

Re: Say Hello To Pauline In Donkey Kong Bananza

eldersnake

I see Nintendo really was holding a lot back, even in the play testings, cos this looks way better and more feature packed than I thought before.

I'm still just tossing up whether I actually want to dump over $100 AUD on it though, as good as it looks

Re: Best Mario Kart Games Of All Time

I want to give more love to SMK, but something about the graphics actually hurts my eyes even playing it on OG hardware and a CRT. At least, now as an adult, I don't remember it doing that as a kid.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (14th June)

eldersnake

A weird mix of Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, maybe some Split Fiction if I can pry my partner away from her otomes (on the Nintendo side of things), then otherwise on PC I've been replaying the Deus Ex games (currently on Human Revolution after clocking DX1 and DX2) and even playing a grand old oldie for the first time - Beneath a Steel Sky.

Re: Nintendo Reminds Us DK Is On The Way To Switch 2 Next Month

eldersnake

Not too sure yet what to think of this one. My worry is Nintendo doing a classic "look at this one cool new thing" and hyping it to oblivion that might get old a bit too quickly one playing it. It will be interesting to see some reviews.

But anyway my favourite DK titles are still the SNES Country series so far.

Re: Forget The PS4, Koei Tecmo Reckons Switch 2 Is Closer To Xbox Series S

eldersnake

Ultimately I don't think it matters much. The important thing is it is a good step up from the Switch 1 (it had to be) and it has tech like DLSS as well. I think as devs get to know the Switch 2 more we'll be surprised what can be done on it. There were some miracles worked on the OG Switch, so it will be interesting to see what devs manage on the new one as years go by.
