Re: Opinion: Can We Stop Comparing Donkey Kong Bananza's Tactile Thrills To Odyssey Now?

carlos82

Both this and Odyssey are brilliant games that share some elements but by and large the core gameplay loops of both are quite different with the 2 main characters controlling quite differently.

Then structure wise, DK doesn't actually require any banana's for progress, meaning you can engage with as much or as little of the game as you like and the last part of the game is one of the best I've ever played.

I've now collected everything on DK and have the 3 star save file and at some point will do a no banana run , which should be challenging with no upgrades but ultimately if you're a fan of 3D platformers, play both, oh and New Donk City is one of the all time great levels

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (26th July)

carlos82

Just finishing off Donkey Kong Bananza, I've done the main story and post game quest, so just mopping up the rest of the Banana's. This game is amazing and has one of, if not the best end sequence I've seen in a game which i won't spoil

Once I'm done with that, it'll be back to finishing Death Stranding 2

Re: UK Charts: Donkey Kong Bananza Is A Hit, But Sells Less Than Half Of Super Mario Odyssey

carlos82

Yeah let's compare the sales of a game that launches in the summer just 6 weeks after its console, to that which launched 7 months into it and the holiday season where more games are sold anyway.

The time to judge Donkey Kong's success isn’t now but in the months and perhaps years to come.

What I will say, if you're one who buys Mario games but not DK's, then you're missing out, as Bananza and the overlooked Tropical Freeze are easily as good as anything with Mario in

Re: Video: Switch 2 Vs. Steam Deck System Face-Off, Digital Foundry Investigates

carlos82

They aren't even competing devices and this is simply the old PC vs console debate. People buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo's games, so at that point the Steamdeck is irrelevant in that discussion.

A few on here are even saying the Steamdeck is a console and it simply isn’t, its literally a handheld PC and as simplified as its OS is, the majority of games on Steam do not function like console games.

Steamdeck is a great device for what it sets out to be, but sales data alone shows that these do not cater to the same market at all

Re: "Somewhat Mixed" - Digital Foundry Delivers Its Technical Analysis Of Donkey Kong Bananza

carlos82

Would I rather it be a locked 60fps, sure but my only real concern from that is some bosses going down to 30fps, so hopefully that can be looked at, everything else seems minor and not something I'd be bothered about.

Actually watching DF's video, John is overall very complimentary about the game, much more so than this article suggest as they only pickup on the negatives

"I highly recommend giving it a shot if it looks interesting to you. Sure, it has a few technical issues under the surface, but what the team has accomplished on the whole is really quite amazing"

Re: The First Review For Donkey Kong Bananza Is In

carlos82

@AussieMcBucket I know, it just me me smile when I really think about some of these things.

I just went back and looked at the direct and it looks like the ostrich only glides, similar to how it did in DKC, with updrafts of air to give you more height

Re: The First Review For Donkey Kong Bananza Is In

carlos82

@AussieMcBucket I get what you're saying but it's kinda funny that someone can accept that an ape can transform into a giant ostrich, just not that said ostrich can then fly, next you'll be telling me that zebras can't run on 2 legs or on water 😉

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Director Acknowledges Performance Drops: "We Prioritized Fun And Playability"

carlos82

@h3s yeah the VRR on PS5 is a smaller range and of course this can easily mask small performance drops though other issues such as traversal stutters would still be noticable, or games like Oblivion which has enormous frame time spikes.

Thing is, most of the time such minor drops aren't a big deal and thats ultimately my point. I've been gaming since the 80's and the majority of console games have suffered from slow down, frame drops etc and for the most part they don't matter.

Sure I'd rather every game lock to their fps target but what I've seen of this so far it seems unobtrusive and I think sometimes we get far too obsessive over such minor things (myself included), rather than just look forward to something or having fun with it

Re: Beat 'Em Up Classic Double Dragon Gets A Modern Revival On Switch This October

carlos82

I'm a big beat em up fan but Double Dragon is one series I've never really understood the popularity of. It probably didn't help that id already played the vastly superior Streets of Rage before playing any but even later entries like Neon weren't great.

This though, the gameplay looks like it could be interesting but visually, I don't find it particularly appealing

Re: Sega Knows You Hate Mario Kart's Blue Shells

carlos82

I always found the blue shell to be a weird item, as the person who gets that has no real benefit from using it and I do feel the frequency of them should be significantly turned down, that said its hardly made a difference to the success of Mario Kart.

Thing is, even if you remove the blue shell or don't have an equivalent, the chances are that the person in first is just target practice for all manner of projectiles anyway

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

carlos82

I've played my Switch 2 handheld way more than I did the OLED, mainly because the joycons are significantly better but also because I prefer a bigger screen. Sure the motion clarity isn't as good as the OLED but I don't really notice it when playing and as I said, I prefer it because it's larger and has HDR, I'd also say the screen is way better than the og Switch.

What's the fuss over the USB cable length? I only use it to charge my Pro controller on the rare occasion it dies

Re: The House Of The Dead 2: Remake Reloads For August Release On Switch

carlos82

Love House of The Dead and i played the demo of this and sadly ot has the same poor controls as the original. This could have been great on Switch 2 with mouse controls but its not made as a lightgun game would be, so doesn't even work properly with them on PC.

I'll stick to playing the originals with my Sinden Lightgun on PC

Re: Reaction: Donkey Kong Bananza Has Instantly Become My Most Anticipated Game Of 2025

carlos82

Same, even as someone who plays on all platforms. I was excited being a Donkey Kong fan and having waited 26 years for a new 3D entry but that initial reveal seemed like it'd be good though maybe not truly special.

However, all that changed in the Direct and it looked incredible, seemingly taking all the best bits of Odyssey, the soundtrack style of MKW and throwing in a bit of Banjo Kazzoie. I cannot wait

Re: Say Hello To Pauline In Donkey Kong Bananza

carlos82

This looks incredible and its brilliant to see Donkey Kong and Pauline back together after all these years. Does this mean it was actually Mario kidnapping her back in the original game?

I'm super excited for this, it looks like they're taking the best parts pf Odyssey and sprinkling a bit of Banjo Kazzoie magic on top

Re: Poll: So, Have You Used Zelda Notes Yet?

carlos82

Yeah and they're pretty useful, especially early on for extra weapon storage and I like the auto builder QR code function.

For new players I'd recommend not using it for Koroks etc (straight away) as it kind of spoils your exploration and learning the environments
