Nintendo is all about innovation and HOW do you want to play. Homerun with the Switch...freeing gamers from being tethered to the couch. But what is the next innovation? That is the void the next console will fill. My only guess would be augmented reality....
A new season also launched today in Asphalt 9 for the standard $9.99 for the season pass. It is one heck of a racer and the evergreen content is remarkable.
***[INSERT MY OBLIGATORY PRAISE FOR ASPHALT 9 HERE]*** ***[ADD #SiegeEngineFTW HERE]*** I fear I have become very predictable...but I do so love a good racer!
I love the arcade game and the series, but not sure this is in the same league as Asphalt 9 (positively brilliant arcade racer). I'll sure I'll buy it just to see... ; )
Contra, Baseball Stars, and Tecmo Super Bowl are serious omissions, but the ONE THING THAT MUST BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY IS: #6 Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Yes, it matters! : )
NONE OF THE ABOVE!! For cardboard era games, give me a decent looking cart, a decent instruction manual and I'll have fun making a UGC box for it. Looks great on the shelf and I don't have to panic when handling the box to PLAY THE GAME!
Big N just waiting for that "Available TODAY in the eShop" announcement....
....back to reality, how amazing was that Bayonetta Demo on the Wii U?!? Don't think I ever got so hyped for a game after playing that (like a million times)....
I started collecting around 2008 . . . that was the time. Economic crisis thanks to bad lenders and financiers, I was still gainfully employed and eBay was full of NES and SNES deals. Didn't take long to surpass my childhood collection and build an N64 one to boot. But too many just sit on the shelf now in their custom UGC boxes I took such pride in creating. My best advice is ignore seeking a game merely because it's "rare" or will round out your collection (or sub-collection). Many of those types of games are pants (love that phrase!) and the ones that aren't are often available in other formats now (I'm looking at you, Wild Guns). And I've played the uber common and cheap Star Wars E1 Racer a thousand times more than Conker's and my more pricey games.
On the Switch, I've locked into ONE game for the past year plus (Asphalt 9). It is so refreshing to me to play a single game I truly enjoy and not be on the hamster wheel of game accumulation anymore.
Fun topic, good article, and as always, to each his/her own.
@Highonda_H_S Amen. Splatoon is a far more quintessential WiiU game and CANNOT be anything less than a TOP 3 WiiU game.
When I see these lists, I always like to give a nod to the much overlooked Tank! Tank! Tank! for its multiplayer fun and use of the much neglected Wii U camera.
Playing since its Switch release last October, I took a few months off but recently returned to A9, the MOST ENJOYABLE racer I've ever played (and played and played), and glad to have more cars and tracks. Career mode's "new car wall" can be annoying but you cannot quibble with the excellent racing action in this game. Truly outstanding!
@Mountain_Man yep, claim its rare, get it sealed up, and who knows what is even on there. I hate being a skeptic but i like even less what is happening to VG collecting.
I bought it and played for an hour last night. Here are some noted differences/improvements over the N64 version: 1. The lighting is DRAMATICALLY better. The N64 version was very dark. 2. The graphics are MUCH sharper. 3. In-race music! 4. Pre-race cut scenes that give a little more context to the racing environment. 5. Boost meter fills when stick forward/up OR BACKWARD/DOWN 6. Playing with a pro controller, controls seem more responsive 7. Gameplay is still fast. I've played Asphalt 9 intensely since October, and I thought it would make SWE1R seem slow. Nope. 8. Text replaced. Very easy to read, no blur.
I am confused. The N64 game had almost no music. It had to be removed and only piped up occasionally (start of last lap maybe?). Is that still the case?
Also, other versions (non-N64) had more robust cut scene of the track and planet they were on. Does this version have those cut scenes?
How I wish multiplayer online racing was supported . . . imagine an ASPHALT 9 like experience with pod racing in the Star Wars galaxy. How great would that be?!?
SMB2 is really a great baseball game in the Baseball Stars tradition. The gameplay is really good and if you pitch like a Major league (change speeds, location, hit corners), you can stifle opposing offenses. And I'll second the inclusion of female players.
9) If you're a twitch gaming, adrenaline junkie, play Asphalt 9 and you wont have time for nor want to play or buy anything else until you beat it (which probably requires 500+ hours).

Yikes, getting WiiU vibes. Where are the innovations? And would ergonomic joy cons been too much to ask?
