Well, here's a welcome surprise for you. Konami and developer Ukuza Inc. have surprise-launched a brand new IP on Nintendo Switch and other platforms called Skelattack.
This new action-adventure platformer is said to "introduce an expansive Underworld filled with quirky, charming and sometimes deadly inhabitants of the afterlife", taking players on a dungeon-crawler journey from the perspective of the creatures, rather than the humans that threaten their home. It hadn't received any official release information before now, so its appearance on the eShop has come out of the blue.
Here's an official description for you, as well as some lovely screenshots:
As a newly deceased member of the Underworld and resident in the happy hub of Aftervale, Skully is just getting the hang of being dead and coming to terms with being a skeleton. As he prepares for his Remembrance to understand who he was in his past life, Skully finds himself in a fight to protect his home from plundering humans from above.
In an attempt to steal the magic that kindles the spirits of the dead, the Blue Flame, the humans kidnap Aftervale’s elder skeleton, Elzedon. Together with Imber, Skully’s trusty bat friend, players will control both characters to jump, slash and flap their way through the Underworld to stop the human threat, save the Elder and protect the Blue Flame.
It's available to download from the Switch eShop as we speak for £15.99.

Shocking, Konami making new games!
Looks quite nice but I'll wait for the reviews.
Is it just platformer or does it have metroid/castlevania type play?
Konami no... Where is my PES and metal gear collection? (I'm actually quite interested in this game as well though.)
I need more information about it (specifically whether it's level-based or metroidvania... I'm a bit fatigued just now with the latter). But it looks FANTASTIC. It looks hand drawn like Wario: Shake It and appears to play like the best Indie platformers.
Very intrigued...
Wow hooray finally at last, A CRAPPY GAME lol it would of been better to get a brand new castlevania or a brand new rocket knight adventures game
@tourjeff Or perhaps they only published this.
Konami lives.... I just want another Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon game, or even just a remastered version of the original N64 game on the Switch...
@Beermonkey I’ve given up hope for PES coming to the Switch. Ever since EA started reskinning the annual FIFA for top price Konami have been sat in the corner and not capitalising from this. Be nice to get some news this year but I’m not banking on it
yeah looks like Hollow Knight had a brother
Well it’s only published by Konami, so there’s a chance this is alright.
Looks a little derivative but not bad tbh. May be worth checking out.
It seemed to me as if it's Hollow Knight but the protagonist is Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango
Looks pretty decent. When the price is right I may check it out if the word of mouth is good.
Just make a new Castlevania then i will be interested.
This game looks pretty sweet. Thanks Konami.
Looks like every other "indie" platformer recently
skeletons sure have been popular protagonists lately. kind of looks like a indie. might put it on my list depending on the rpg elements since i saw a crit.
Early reviews are suggesting it's a pretty game with good ideas but lacks the polish we've seen with stronger indie releases.
Is it sad to say that doesn't look half bad?! My have they fallen but this game has potential.
I wonder how much they mistreated their employees this time to get this released.
Let's all believe this is just an appetizer before the main course.
I have no idea which was announced earlier as this is the first I've seen of Skelattack but it surprised me that they would name the protagonist 'Skully'. Not only is it really on the nose but there's a game releasing in August called Skully as well. It seems like there's a fine line between a memorable name and one that feels very unimaginative. Other than this minor gripe the game looks pretty cool and I'll look forward to some reviews.
A more manageable Hollow Knight would be just fine by me.
@BANJO Yeah, a new Goemon game would be great. We've had more than one per year in average since the series started, then it just completely stopped in 2005. A Goemon ReBirth would've been awesome when Konami made all those ReBirth titles on the Wii, but no such luck...
Even a Goemon collection in the style of the Castlevania and Contra ones would be lovely.
...At least we have Mr. Goemon on Switch, am I right?...
Sorry not going anywhere near that, I used to love Konami in the 90s when they were hands-down the best developers but its not even a shadow of its former self. Really sad to see.
I have lost all faith in anyone still working in the hollowed out husk that once was Konami.
@geni53yr7 Oh, it’s crappy? I’m assuming you played it to make that judgment or .... ?
This looks good but really WTF is Konami doing these days? Since parting ways with the brilliant creator/director of MGS they really haven't done much to speak of. FIFA was a 1yrs effort by EA and then a massive rehash so the soccer market is wide open. A quality full featured version of PES would likely sell great in EU/UK and JP so why not port it? Several teams have proven excellent at ports on the Switch and tend to get them done in less than 1yr. MGS5 is one the best combat simulators ever IMO and ppl would love to see MGS5 or even the PS3 only MGS4 ported. And then CastleV….only one of the most beloved IPs in gaming history and Konami gives us nothing.....isn't it time for a total reboot of SOTN? I don't even know how Konami stays in business with their terrible practices and refusal to capitalize on their best IPs.....This game looks interesting, but is it really going to be better than Hollow Knight, Celeste, or SWDig2.....I doubt it. It looks like another Indy platform game (which I love) just being published by Konami. I will await reviews and my pick it up as I love old school but really its very little to be excited about considering what Konami should be bringing to the Switch.
Love the premise, and its looks pretty great. Thankfully not made by Konami too. Might just snag this.
@Yenkman They could corner the market as seen as EA just throw us scraps. The thought of a true on the go football game makes me giddy. Would even settle for Mario Strikers at the moment.
@Yenkman
PES 2009 was the best football game ever
Absolutely loved the the control system, looked abit mad on screen but after a while you never bothered about it, have played football games since ***** nes days, ISS66 was the best until this game 2008 showed off the weird set up then they took it up a notch for 09, fifa tried but no where near as good, best game ever for me is based on playing football games over many years one thing I could never do was play the highest setting, and misplaced passes were downright insane, PES 09 made that impossible so my football play improved instantly and dramatically so much so i took the level not up to world class but legendary and to my surprise am competing with them, then actually beating teams on legendary setting so best football game EVER fully justified for me, would love PES to use this style on the joy cons, the football I played back in the day was scintillating
Looks decent!
@Krisi Yes a new Goemon would be amazing, I unfortunately don't think it's possible.... Konami now is a shadow of it's former self..... If they could just release the N64 original as it is I would be happy!!
Konami makes a lot more money doing compilations and pachinko machines.
Not related to Death Jr., another short lived franchise they published?
@tourjeff
'Liked' your comment just for your profile picture alone! I love firing up my Japanese copy of Waverace 64 now and again as, frankly it still handles like a dream! Plus THAT soundtrack is worth the entry price alone.
"You're about 15 seconds ahead"!
👍👍
Isn't Konami just the publisher here?
Doesn't look particularly good.
Konami! They're still going?
Only they don't really seem to produce much nowadays sadly. A faaaar cry from the company's heyday back in the early 1990's, before a chunk of them spilt away to form Treasure.
Company either needs to sell its remaining I.P's, or be brought out by a rival (Nintendo could do some truly amazing things with Castlevania!)
Christ knows who'd end up with the MGS franchise? Ideally though I'd kind of like it to go almost full circle and end up back in Kojima's hands. And for the love of Vic Viper, get David Hayter back in as the voice of Snake! He IS Snake! No ifs, no buts.
Speaking of Treasure....
Looks alright, but PES is the Konami game people really want. Fifa desperately needs some competition. I wouldn't even be bothered if it was unlisenced, as long as it played better.
I’ll try it! Not quite the Castlevania or Metroidvania we’ve all been wanting, but years ago I said to myself that it would be cool if they did a light hearted, cartooned Castlevania. Maybe this is more along those lines.
It looks great but I heard this is a rogue lite. If that's true I have zero interest.
@Mr-Glissando Yes, I loved the n64 version and I also play it sometimes.
The soundtrack is awesome I remember most of them as well.
I wish Nintendo would release a new entry or a remaster with more circuits etc. Let's hope this will happen soon!
'Okay, good... Maximum power!!' 😁
Oh wow they're alive.
This looks like one of the other hundred or so Metroidvania platformer type games available on the Switch.
At least it's reasonably priced but honestly, no thanks, I own like 7 of these already.
When did Shantae pass away? She was looking a bit thin...may have taken that dieting too far...
@geni53yr7 I don't know. I'm kind of tired of dragging out the corpse of those IP's to flog them again. I welcome new IP.
I'm like 3 hours in, and I like it! Nothing too special, but a nice one to kill some time every once in a while. Pure platformer.
So instead of giving us one of their millions of classical gems they decided to give us an indie game instead. I mean I still take it but c'mon Konami where's all your arcade games at, where's Rocket Knight Adventure and Sunset Riders, heck even the last gen version of Rocket Knight would had been good.
Hardly 'just', it was released yesterday! Ever slow Nintendo Life!!
Oh wow, 1 hour later I finished the game! 😅
4 Hours of gameplay.. No new game + either. Way too expensive for what you get for it, if you ask me.
@BANJO finally! Someone talking sense! Would LOVE a re-release/remake of Mystical Ninja!
Konami is the Smaug of video game companies, sat on a pile of IP's that have been proven to print cash and doing bugger all with them, instead the only thing they do release is a small indie looking platformer? So bizzare. Don't get me wrong it looks cool (and its nice to see them greenlight something that isn't pachinko machines) but I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be people's first choice for a new Konami title...
gameplay looks brilliant..
@commentlife have you got one of them Nintendo consoles in your avatar picture?
I watched SimpleFlips play this and it looks fun if you enjoy challenging platforming.
New games give me hope that Konami will resurrect Goemon someday... Heck just translate the SNES ones (and redo the one we got) an make a collection. I'd buy them again.
@RocknRolf 20 USD for one hour of game. Very sad to know. I am playing but at the beginning.
THANK GOD, FINALLY
A REAL GAME AND NOT JUST ANOTHER PACHINKO
I don't know. I might be interested if it was a Pachinko machine
I am joking. This is exciting and the cartoony nature is reminding me of Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and Rocket Knight. I grew up with those awesome Konami games and still believe they got the ability to recreate those times again.
@MysteryCupofJoe They don't have the ability to do that and they didn't make this game. They did nothing and will do nothing.
What Konami needs to do is make a new Castlevania game ,retro style ..
@tourjeff @Mr-Glissando WE ARE BROTHERS/SISTERS IN WAVE RACE! (And perhaps F-Zero?) I WELCOME ALL PRAISE AND EFFORTS TO REVIVE THESE TIMELESS JOYS
Konami releases a game.... O.K, good for them. I wonder what Capcom are doing? Oh yeah 10 times better, moving on.
@COVIDberry and @tourjeff Me fellow Wave Race 64 brethrens.
That game was a near masterpiece in my eyes. Shame about the 'sequel' though! (well Blue Storm's actually the third game I'm the franchise, due to the 1992 Game Boy Wave Race) Blue Storm wasn't necessarily a bad game as such, but its handling felt way off and it just completely lacked "the feels", music, and just general experience of Wave Race 64.
Definitely needs a reboot though! And where the hell's a new FZero?! 17 YEARS since Sega's Amusement Vision (of all people) dropped the Superb FZero GX on us!
Sort it out Nintendo! (or Sega even)
Animation looks hand drawn and gameplay pretty decent. I'm going to wait until around Halloween to pick it up.
@RocknRolf Damn, I'll definitely be waiting for a sale then.
@DreamStar
BINGO!!! It could even be a new IP since we are talking about a SNES like game. They could make a KILLING on Switch!!!
@Smug43 ..Agreed ..
@Mr-Glissando Heh - my first experience of Wave Race was that very Blue Storm. Perhaps it was that game's wave physics and amazing rumble performance that enchanted me. I actually prefer the art direction of Blue Storm to F-Zero GX; the graphics and music on GX are superior, but do not proclaim "F-Zero!" to my heart.
The Shin Megami Tensei and Mega Man franchises have relatively small but loud fanbases; I think these old games call for such vocal support!
Miyamoto-san, you are wrong when you claim that no new innovations are available for such franchises. Using all the features of Switch to their fullest, with all the expected modern upgrades, would be sufficient!
To be perfectly honest, this looks like something my six year old daughter would play on her tablet.
Oh, Konami, how I wish you more closely resembled the Konami of 87-99.
@COVIDberry @Mr-Glissando
Hey there, in my opinion the n64 is a better game than Blue Storm.
Not that BlueStorm was bad but I felt it was lacking something.
The controls were also not as good, I do prefer the n64 handling.
The music on the n64 is also memorable and I cannot say the same for BlueStorm.
I really hope that Nintendo will release one of these forgotten IPs.
On my wishing list I also have :
F-Zero (obviously)
Pillotwings
1080 Snowboard
Cruis'n
Mario Golf
@BANJO I would love to see a port/remake of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. That was the first video game I ever played and I had so much fun messing around in it. Sadly, I didn't get very far when I was a kid and when I tried to go back to it and actually complete it, my copy stopped working. I would love the opportunity to actually finish it, but I need them to re-release the game to do so.
@Bolt_Strike I remember playing it after Super Mario 64, both great games. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon had an excellent soundtrack, I also enjoyed the Impact boss battles, really good memories...
I sold my N64 copy a few years ago, I wish I hadn't now....
This looks intriguing, but where is Metal Gear Solid, Konami? They should have, at the very least, given the Switch an eShop release of the collection.
@tourjeff
Sir, we definitely park our cars in the same garage when it comes to game tastes! Completely agree on the fact that Blue Storm, somehow just missing that 'vibe' and handling that was presente in the superior N64 game
All of those long forgotten Nintendo I.P's and franchises you mentioned, are EXACTLY the same games I want to see resurrected! (not so much Cruise'n for me personally) but F-Zero... WHAT are they doing regarding it?! The fans (myself included) are literally chomping at the bit for a new F-Zero game!
They're telling us they can't take the franchise "any further" Bollocks! So some of the most creative minds in the whole of the video gaming industry, that they simply can't think of some fresh ideas to implement into their wonderful futuristic hover car racer? In this day and age as well! I simply don't understand why they've tossed this franchise onto the scrapheap? (possibly sales related)
I'll have an F-Zero brainstorm then shall I...
For a start... You could implement customisable crafts, characters, tracks (especially the track editor part)
Deformable terrain, ie the track could extend out into space or be even set on a distant colony, or an industrial space cruiser. Imagine meteorite storms bombarding and instantly knocking out or damaging parts of the track, thus forcing the player to be adapting and being constantly on top of their game! Different gravity's could effect your crafts weigh, as in the background the Starfox team take on enemy forces.
A selectable weapons system mode (think Mario Kart, but obviously done in an F-Zero style way)
A possible story mode where captain Falcon can go out and track down bountys. This could play out in a futuristic Mute city/GTA style sandbox world (obviously it would be a lot smaller in scale than a full fat GTA game though) the credits obtained when the bountys are turned in, could them be spent on parts for your craft and on alien prostitutes.
Last but not least.... Online mode!
There's just a few ideas for a new F-Zero.
@Mr-Glissando
“WOW! Have a job!” ...is what I would say if I worked at Nintendo (and in charge of reviving old IPs).
What, that took you ten minutes to drum out some truly innovative, substantial and fresh ideas for the series? Not too outrageous, but enough to ‘justify’ a new release (MORE everything GX would suffice for me/many!).
Bashing on ‘what Nintendo SHOULD do’ gets old (in my opinion), but ironically, it’s sensible, thoughtful ideas like this that often provide fuel for the fire!
I applaud your ideas, and perhaps one day, will reap the benefits of such progressive thinking. BioRex...we will be reunited, ONE DAY!!
@CodyDogg
Cheers chap! 👍👍
