Bayonetta 3 was announced back in 2017, but since then, we've seen nothing of the game – not even a new trailer. There's no solid indication of when it will be released, either, and developer PlatinumGames has been forced to assure fans several times that production is proceeding as expected.
Earlier this year, the creator of the series Hideki Kamiya got hopes up by appearing to hint that a reveal was coming soon, which led many to speculate that it would be shown off during the E3 digital event – something which didn't happen. With three months of 2021 remaining on the clock, time is running out for any kind of solid Bayonetta 3 news.
When quizzed on his earlier tease by our friends over at VGC, Kamiya said:
It was more of a not definitely ‘something will come out this year’, but if there is a year, then something should happen, right? If you remember last time, I said that even though everyone was asking about Bayonetta 3, maybe you should tell everyone to forget about it for a while. I kind of need to keep to that stance for now because ultimately, it’s not our decision what to say and when to say it.
Also speaking to VGC, PlatinumGames’ studio head Atsushi Inaba said:
There’s no need to worry. Don’t worry about it at this time. Everything’s OK.
Kamiya added that the team behind the game is well aware that fans are desperate to see it in action, and the studio is equally keen to show it off – but it sounds like Nintendo is keeping Bayonetta 3 under wraps for now and ultimately has the final say, as it is the company which is publishing the game (a point which has been made in the past):
As much as everyone is clamouring to see it, we are really, really waiting to release it too. Everyone who is working on the project is of course very proud of what we’re doing and wants everyone to see what we’re doing. As much as fans are waiting for it, we are waiting for the day when we can show it. We want everyone to cheer us on as we run to the final stretch. We want to show it too!
Do you think we'll see something of Bayonetta 3 this year? When do you predict the game will release? Let us know with a comment.

Better late than never I always say.
Sounds like Nintendo wants to review the finished product before they announce it’s ready. Not unusual for them since it took awhile to get Bayonetta 2 ready.
I wonder how many times Platinum will have to say this for people to get the point finally
So it's Nintendo to blame for allowing the title to be announced in the early stages and hold off from any trailer footage for 4 years. Sounds like another particular game of theirs. That makes sense.
It.s Nintendo, they may as well announce a Direct for tomorrow and say it's being released in a month, with a surprise drop of F-Zero, or just nothing at all for another year. Anyway, when it's done and how it's done, we'll have to wait and see. Or just play something else instead of being hyped for years, pick it up day one, and already being hyped for something else.
@Shambo Ofcourse, it's a Nintendo published title. There are contracts and agreements that developers don't just start releasing information.
After seeing Sony’s September 21 showcase of 2023 releases, I get why Nintendo doesn’t believe in a showing a game too early.
Bayonetta 3 needs to be shockingly surprising like the first 2 were.
Take your time... make it good.
Funny how they keep saying they can't say anything about it, but at the same time say things like: "We want everyone to cheer us on as we run to the final stretch." and "Don’t worry about it at this time. Everything’s OK."
So which is it, they can't say anything b/c Nintendo won't let them or the game is almost done, b/c it's been 4 years and they are making it sound like the game is almost done.
So they should either shut up or tell us when they think they will be finished making it but it's up to Nintendo when it gets released after that. They are trying way to hard to have it both ways.
Maybe I wouldn't be so annoyed if I also hadn't been waiting on "nearly complete" Pikmin 4 for the past 5 years. That was going great too. And let's not get started on the entire Wii U Era with Yooka-Laylee, Project Cars, etc.
Somebody remind Platinum Games "Scalebound" was coming along OK as well. 😝
Anyway, always the next Direct, probably in the next week or 2. At the rate Bayonetta 3 is going we'll probably get Scalebound on Switch first. And I'd be OK with that, we'll still get B3 before Pikmin 4. Which at this point better be a SwitchDS launch title.
"Are we there yet?!"- Gamers, asking for info on any game that was announced ages ago but hasn't been talked about since.
They'll drop the trailer on some random day like they always do but my guess is as good as yours
@sanderev And I can get behind that completely. Leaks and such spoil the initial impact, and you often only get one chance for a first impression, especially in such a saturated market where people build up high expectations, and move on the minute they are even SOMEHOW dissatisfied.
I have a suspicion that Nintendo want to shift Bayonetta to their next generation of hardware, whenever and whatever that might be.
Lol. It’s clearly vapourware.
It's been in Nintendo's hands to reveal it since day one.
I think the issue was that Nintendo announced the development to build up hype when the Switch released. But good games take time!
SMT V was in limbo for years and look at it now, basically finished and looking better than I ever expected. Hopefully Bayonetta is similar
Given Astral Chain was released within a few months of its reveal I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the same with this. I’d bet Nintendo announced it when it was extremely early into development just to put another feather in Switch’s cap during its first year. Don’t know why everyone is so worried after Nintendo were so candid with Metroid Prime 4’s development reboot; if this is cancelled they’ll surely just say it or at least remove it from upcoming release schedules.
I don't want to see anything, I just want them to release it when it's ready. It's been so long since the announcement they can't really get away with anything close to a hype period anymore. Once you go past waiting 3 years for a game any hype starts working against a game for me.
I'm starting to prefer announcing games, like, a month ahead of release. Anticipating something for several years with no end in sight is kind of frustrating.
Still have my hopes up for this, though.
No worries yesterday PS showed Bayonetta 4 and it looks amazing !
Still vapourware then
@Porky well you still have companies announcing games for 2023 and we are still in 2021.
I've honestly lost interest at this point
It's actually moving over to be a PS5 exclusive.
I really believe that this is going to be a Switch 2 launch game for 2022. Odyssey 2, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and BotW 2 are all going to release in a single year and it will be glorious.
"It was more of a not definitely ‘something will come out this year’, but if there is a year, then something should happen, right?"
I don't seem to speak the language this sentence was written in. Can anyone translate?
Take your time. For example 2028 is a good year to show it. We would prefer a sequel to Astral Chain
B2 had a fantastic demo available for weeks…maybe months before its release. I hope that happens again.
If Nintendo isn’t stressing about it, nobody else should be stressing about it. Just wait.
It’s been FOUR years already.
It's starting to look like its initial reveal was either a massive miscommunication or a botched marketing ploy.
Either way, it's starting to create somewhat negative PR.
@Hobbesyall Yeah those camera angles at the start of Project Eve were very Bayo.
"Forget about it" is so funny when it's coming from them, but we honestly should. Just busy yourself with other game. No big deal...
I've been on the same thought about Bayonetta 3 since Metroid Prime 4 was rebooted to Retro Studios: Metroid Prime 4, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD and Bayonetta 3 WILL come out in the same calendar year together. As soon as Metroid Prime 4 has a launch year decided on, they will announce all 3 games in the same event (likely Nintendo Direct or Game Awards presentation). Bayonetta 3 will be a lot like Super Mario Odyssey. Remember, remember Mario Odyssey went gold 8 months before the game released and Nintendo held onto that game for that long. Same thing will happen with Bayonetta 3. It will go gold long before they announce it and Nintendo will just hold onto that until they're ready. Why I feel this way about all 3 games mentioned? It's a strange dichotomy I have about these games that would take a while to explain. Out!
It'd be nice if Platinum and Nintendo stopped lying and just admitted Bayonetta 3 doesn't exist. It never did.
@Meteoroid The other thing is they release a lot more software than a lot of other companies, so they have strategic calendar slots to make sure one game doesn't cannibalise the sales of something else. It most likely has a slot, only Nintendo and Platinum know what that is, and Platinum have their mouths gaffer taped shut.
At this point Project Eve will be released before Bayo 3 😂
What a joke....
This is a fun self-reminder that I bought the Bayonetta double pack on Switch and never even opened it. I had played the original back on... Xbox? I don't even remember. But I never did boot up the sequel, and probably should one day.
Some day...
“A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”
Time is running out for a reveal? Is there some deadline I am unaware of lol?
@HolyGeez03 I get the impression it's less about needing more time than it is about waiting for Nintendo to pull the trigger. Plus side, clearly there's something to show...
I see what Nintendo is doing.
Keeping everything tight till the release of the steamdeck, and at the release they will reveal every game they had hidden lol.
At least i hope they have more in store for us than what they have revealed.
Show us the money!
Whats more surprising is that they have been able to keep everything under wraps without a single leak.
The game is not delayed I think it’s ready but Nintendo decided to keep it and they will release it when they think it’s the right time, Like when people will stop buying remaster of wii u games and ask for something new to play , and when the interest will start to drop for the switch then maybe they will dare to show us these games.
it's release will probably be tied to new hardware. same with zelda, they need a good line-up of enhanced titles to push sales for the Switch 4k.
“Final stretch” you say?…
Hey, I want games to take there time, Bc in the end you can't rush art.
I thought the Playstation showcase this week was really strong ....... however it was very much a look at late 2022 going into 2023.
In some ways I do prefer Nintendos approach of announce and it's coming this year with the odd few exceptions like Bayonetta, Zelda and Metroid.
And this folks, is precisely why you don’t announce a game this early in advance. What’s it been, 4 years now? Not a good look at all
Nintendo is usually great at timing when they fully reveal games. Bayo 3 was obviously announced too early, but I imagine the actual gameplay reveal will be much closer to launch. This is what made Nintendo's E3 so great this year; getting Metroid Dread, WarioWare, Mario Party and SMT V gameplay footage and them all being released this year.
@rjejr To be accurate, he says "it’s not our decision what to say and when to say it". That to me is a clear distinction between not being able to say nothing versus being able to say very little, when to say that very little and that very little being controlled by another party (in this case, Nintendo). Maybe they would be better off not having said anything at all. But then I would imagine they would have caught flack for being silent as well.
I also can't speak to whatever happened with Scalebound. I know of the game. It was not really on my radar. But as for Pikmin 4, it was obviously the case, like Bayonetta 3, of information being shared earlier than it should have been. Miyamoto admitted as much. What it;s fate has become, who knows? We know Nintendo has a history of switching development from one console to another or even having games completed to release when they feel. So it could be the case for that game.
And I know some here think the game is canceled. I just don't think they would even entertain questions that would imply the game still exist if it didn't. The gates of hell would open if they kept saying its coming, only to switch course a month later and say it had been long canceled.
I think they are moving Bayonetta 3 to PS5 and renaming it Project Eve.
Watch it shadow drop on the next Nintendo Direct.
@Bizzyb
Whoa, dude. Is that you?!
It must be a pain working with Nintendo, they don't like leaks, they don't like previews, they don't like fans.
@MindfulGamer looking at the Project Eve trailer I wouldn’t be surprised
@UmbreonsPapa You mean like Playtonic did with Yooka-Laylee? 😝
I don't think it's "canceled", it's in perpetual hold which is worse. Could be done, could be moved to Switch Pro or Switch 2, could be a train wreck like MP4. But they should either stop talking or say something useful. All their "it's coming along great" is a bit hard to believe after 4 years. It's Bayonetta, it's not Dreams, that took 7 but they were building a game building engine for the masses, that takes time. 4 years should be enough time to build a sequel on the same hardware. At least Horizon and God of War can say - dual release.
I've never had a game PRE-ORDERED for 3 years before.
@Meteoroid It was a translation error all 3 times he brought it up? That's a bit hard to believe. He even said it wasn't Hey! Pikmin. Most likely it was nearing completion for the dual screen Wii U then Nintendo moved on to mono screen Switch so they put it on the back burner until dual screen Switch DS launches. Which we'll only never know for sure if a dual screen Switch ever launches.
That's okay as long as it doesn't suck like No More Heroes 3, Baldo, and Sonic Colors Ultimate then I say keep up the good work and take all the delays you want but please do update us on how the game is wrapping up.
Any game "trailer" without actual game play is worthless cannon fodder.
@Einherjar
Is it really though? As I peruse & partake in all types of video game related media & events: and the only real "negativity" I've really seen over it is from a few impatient & vocal folks like those here & in other select comment sections. Heck, I hob knob with guys who run sites & rub elbows with legit industry insiders & they aren't as up in arms as folks here. While the wait certainly sucks for folks like us (the average fan) I think your take is a tad bit hyperbolic.
I pre-ordered it on Amazon 3 years ago.
I hoping it's super fun, locked at 60fps, and only being held back as a special weapon against some awesome exclusive that Sony or Microsoft might announce or release. Bayonneta 3 is something that could go toe to toe with almost anything, even a hypothetical amazing 120fps action game that releases on PS5 or XSX.
@Meteoroid or Pikmin 4 was the 3DS game?
It's not about "take your time until it's ready," it's about properly managing the hype. If Nintendo stealth-released it tomorrow, sure a bunch of fans would be happy. But it would lose the benefit of months of press buildup (consider NintendoLife's coverage of Skyward Sword remaster, for example). It would get overlooked by millions.
Unless the game is still years away from being ready, Nintendo should really be pushing it in front of eyeballs.
@Scrubicius Pikmin 4 wasn't Hey Pikmin. After Hey Pikmin was announced someone asked him that and he said no, Pikmin 4 was still it's own thing.
Edit: All of this was covered 18 months ago. It was brought up in 2015, 2016 and 2017 AFTER Hey! Pikmin was announced.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/02/feature_its_been_nearly_five_years_so_where_in_the_world_is_pikmin_4
@Meteoroid Pretty sure if it was the design of the game a guy who has been in the business his entire life would have said something like "We've begun work on Pikmin 4." He knew what he said. In the 2 times he talked about it after he had opportunity to correct himself if he was initially mistranslated.
"so there's obviously no way it was actually nearly done"
I can think of several ways it was actually nearly done.
1. He thought it was done but Nintendo didn't like the direction he went. ie Metroid Prime 4
2. He thought it was done but it didn't run well enough. ie Cyberpunk
3. It was done FOR Wii U but Nintendo couldn't figure out how to take the map out. is BotW
4. It was done but Nintendo wanted to milk Pikmin 3 first. ie all the Wii U ports on Switch
That's just off the top of my head. So yeah, it was probably very obviously close to done, but things happened.
@rjejr I guess Pikmin 4 is as real as the Switch Pro this year lol
Still Pikmin 4 is Hey Pikmin since it is the fourth installment right?
lol
My bet is that there will be an actual trailer at this year's Game Awards.
It’s been 5 years, that is normal anymore and it could potentially take another couple of years as well. This will all depend on the length, detail, and game mechanics. It all factors in to how long it takes to release a game anymore. When it does come out I expect it to be epic and at the top of the charts.
@Meteoroid I'd take either of the first 2 over the last. I mean even if it wasn't "nearly complete" and it was only half complete, it would be complete way before now, unless we believe it takes 10 years to make 1 Pikmin sequel. Which I can't. Even if they had just started it 5 years ago it would be done by now.
@Scrubicius Pikmin 4 will be released in a Switch Pro Pikmin themed bundle. 😎
If it's up to Nintendo to show anything about this game, then it's screwed up.
They've been approaching announcements with proximity lately, Astral Chain was announced just 6 months before release for example.
The problem with that is not having to boast something to be excited in the long-term, so why can't they just show something off this game if it's already ready to be shown?! They already showed gameplay for BotW2, something must be wrong there.
@GrailUK Probably the end of the Switch's lifetime lol
@AngelSlayer Hahaha. Very good
@Deerock69 😂 Possibly....
