Update 2: Some owners of the physical edition of Horizon Chase Turbo have reported that the DLC doesn't work when coupled with a physical cartridge. We got in touch with the team to ask about the problem, and have been reassured that a fix should be coming soon:
"Yes, we are aware, our programmers are looking into it and hopefully will fix it as soon as possible."
Those of you who own the digital version of the base game should be able to play the new DLC without issue.
Update: As promised, Horizon Chase Turbo's 'Senna Forever' expansion is now available on Nintendo Switch. You can find all the details you need in our original article below, but first, here's a message from Ayrton's niece Bianca Senna, shared today in a press release:
"This homage to Ayrton [Senna] is incredible, and I have to thank all of AQUIRIS’ team for it, a Brazilian gaming studio worldwide known in the industry. To be able to partner with a quality company from Brazil is extra special to Senna Brands. I’m sure Ayrton’s fans will love the Horizon Chase expansion, a democratic game for catering for many markets and being multiplatform. It’s great to have the chance to tell Ayrton’s racing career in a different way to a new, younger generation of fans."
Original Article (Mon 27th Sep, 2021 13:30 BST): Brazilian developer AQUIRIS has announced Senna Forever, a brand new expansion for Horizon Chase Turbo that'll honour legendary Brazilian racing driver, Ayrton Senna.
Launching on 20th October, the new expansion introduces an entirely new set of cars, tracks, and features inspired by Senna's career, and will even offer a new single-player career mode that lets you follow Senna's own motorsport journey.
It'll cost $5.99 on Switch and other consoles (the iOS and Android versions of the game will get it for $4.99) and "part" of the profits earned will be dedicated to the Ayrton Senna Institute's educational programs. The Ayrton Senna Institute is an organisation designed to help create opportunities for human development for young Brazilians and was set up by his family just months after his fatal crash in 1994.
Here's a feature list and a selection of screenshots for the new expansion:
Single Player Career Mode: Follow the steps of the legendary Brazilian driver through five nostalgic chapters.
Brand new first-person view (Senna Forever-specific): Feel the heat of the moment from the inside of a cockpit.
New race strategies mechanics (Senna Forever-specific): Make tough choices and choose your car setup considering each race track and weather conditions.
130 Senna’s Marks on Career Mode: Pursue them to achieve the driver's outstanding historical performance.
Championship Mode with 18 different teams to choose from and more than 30 cars to unlock: Dominate the world circuit racing through its three different categories.
Play alone or with up to 4 local players: Experience unique runs on each Championship with the unpredictability of randomized weathers, tracks and competitors (the multiplayer mode won't be available in the mobile versions of the expansion).
Those real-life F1 tracks are looking lovely in Horizon Chase Turbo's distinctive style, huh?
If you haven't yet played Horizon Chase Turbo, we'd definitely urge you to give it a try. In our full review of the base game, we called it an absolute must-have for anyone even remotely interested in racing games.

This is great news! I own Horizon Chase Turbo on Switch and PS4, as well as the vanilla iOS (non-Turbo) version, which works wonderful with a Backbone controller. I love the game and I’m a motorsport fan, so I’ll likely grab this Senna tribute DLC across all three platforms.
Certainly one of (if not) the greatest Formula 1 drivers.
Been a long time lurker on blogs and forums for nearly 2 decades. Watched others comment without contributing anything, waiting for that perfect game/incident to finally make my comment debut....and never knew it would be for a little known retro racer by a little Brazilian dev team.
Not even a motor head - but this game is a cracker and this update has got me as excited as any other recent switch news.
Yeah, Horizon Chase Turbo is a great game, especially with friends in split-screen co-op.
Glad that they're updating it with more content.
Wow that looks brilliant. I managed to platinum the original career, so will be picking this up for sure.
Super Monaco GP vibes anyone?
That’s just lovely that they’re honouring him like that. I wish I could have watched him race live but unfortunately I’ve only ever seen clips and documentaries.
@tourjeff Agreed. Ayrton may not have had the longevity of Schumacher or racked up a century of wins like Hamilton, but he’ll always be my favourite F1 driver, for sure.
@nessisonett I was big into F1 in the 90’s and watched that fateful 1994 San Marino GP live with my friends on TV. I’ll never forget that horrible feeling of seeing that crash. Wish I’d never seen it at all.
It felt like that was me in the video clip and it made me misty-eyed. I grew up watching him on weekends with my dad. We were watching live when Senna tragically passed.
Now, I'm only a couple years away from introducing gaming to my child. I'm certainly picking up this expansion.
This looks great, lovely tribute. I also watched the San Marino GP live, heartbreaking.
This looks like great DLC. Grabbing it for sure.
My mother was a flight stewardess on the day Senna died, and the Brazilian pilot went into meltdown mid-flight when he read the news that day. Three days of national mourning. What a man.
He’s no god though, I always disliked him for his holier than thou attitude.
@The_Pixel_King The day after Ratzenberger as well. Thankfully there have been so many safety advancements over the years.
no, im not crying, there is just dusk in my eyes... and yes im a brazilian and yes, I have this gem and i gotta restart playing..
📥I hope we get DLC for 'Cruisin Blast'.
I read this site every single day, but I had to create an account today just to say OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Honestly this is possibly one of my favourite games ever.
I had a feeling this DLC would be a tribute to Super Monaco GP, but I thought it would be a few tracks to gage interest in a full game. Looks like they've gone straight out and given us the full game for about a 1/4 of the price I'd happily pay for it. Woooooo!!!!!
@nessisonett I’ve also been to a number of live WSB and MotoGP races and seen some horrible crashes. How they get up and walk away from some of those two-wheeled crashes is incredible.
I had a sub-30mph crash on my Ducati 999 in 2004 and ended up in hospital for a month and in a wheelchair for a year. Broke my hip, leg, shoulder, clavicle and ribs. But the pro’s slide off at 100mph+ with no more that a shrug. Thankfully!
Wow I’m all over this! This is a great racer and I will definitely support it and it’s for a good cause. A beautiful game.
Whoa. Had just finished the main career & was debating Summer Vibes. May jump on this one.
Including this DLC pack and the two others, is this now the best racing game on the Switch? Assuming this expansion is as good as what has come already.
@Riderkicker Summer Vibes is a good (short) time filler until this comes out, and the car you get makes 100% - ing World Tour a little easier if you plan to
Then, the game passed from Outrun/Top gear style to some as Taito GP/F1 Built to win style?
Great!!
They could put in a bonus level where you date under age girls to make it really accurate
Day 1. Not shure if I'll be playing it tbh. But an easy decision to buy. Just to support the Devs for their fantastic work. HCT - for me - is 2nd best racer on switch. Right behind Mario Kart.
I know absolutely nothing about this guy, but HCT is one of the best values on the Switch, and the DLC price is right, too - especially if part of it goes to charity.
Sign me up.
Such wonderful news!
I love the base game - that's incredible fun for such a low price. And now the devs will offer an expansion with seemingly a great deal of content for - once again - a cheap price. I will just say thank you and buy it day one. Keep up the great work, guys
Am I the only person playing this game on PS Vita?
@The_Pixel_King Senna is a legend here in Brazil, almost unanimous that he was GOAT, but I'm one that goes against the tide.
He has more DNFs than victories, so this puts him bellow Hamilton, Schumacher and some more.
Still a awesome driver tho.
@The_Pixel_King that time was really the golden age of F1.
No BS of team managers calling drivers in the radio to let the partner take over, no computerised cars, etc.
Everything was so raw and challenging to everyone.
Nowadays is extremely boring. Don't even follow it anymore. It's just not fun.
Great game and looks like an amazing update. Really looking forward to this one!
So little gameplay shown it’s an instant. - no thanks!
This beats every announcement in the Direct for me.
THIS LOOKS AMAZING!
@Lord aHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAH
@The_Pixel_King Weirdly the crash itself didn’t look particularly bad, certainly survivable even in those days. It was only as the medics kept working that you realised something else must have happened beyond the G-forces involved. It was nothing like Grosjean’s crash last season for example, where you immediately thought “he’s not getting out of that”… even though amazingly, he did.
Uhhhhh.. this is weird.
This was a great game already...this update looks incredible.
@scottishwildcat Oh man, I’d forgotten about Grosjean’s crash. Do you remember the Ricardo Patrese crash in 1992 or 1993? His Williams flipped spectacularly.
@The_Pixel_King I do, at Estoril. There have been some jaw-dropping collisions over the years, for sure. Christian Fittipaldi literally somersaulting over the finish line at Monza in 1993 is another that springs to mind, as does Martin Brundle's huge shunt with David Coulthard in Australia.
@scottishwildcat Oh god, yes of course. Seriously, I could talk about motorsport (and video games) all day long, so it’s really nice to take a [Lance] stroll down F1 memory lane with you. My memory can be pretty awful, so it’s nice to have it jogged every now and then. Thanks, buddy! 🙂
[EDIT] Speaking of memory lane, I literally only just recalled a game I used to play during the early 90’s on my brothers SNES. I was in my late teens back then and didn’t really get into playing anything other than racing games and each FIFA instalment until much later, probably my 30’s. But at that time, I remember buying – and playing nothing other than – Nigel Mansell’s World Chamionship. Don’t know how it was critically and commercially received at release, but I absolutely adored that game.
@The_Pixel_King I get you there, Senna was my favourite F1 driver too at the time. I couldn't believe what had happened.
Man, I really want to get this for the cockpit view and, I assume, tracks based on actual real-world tracks. But if the hitching issue is still there, I don't want any of it.
Wasn't a Senna fan (I prefer Formula One drivers that raced hard but didn't forget that they were gentlemen, like Jackie Stewart) , but this looks great.
I wonder if there's any chance of Top Gear (SNES) style pit stops. Never was a fan of the fuel icon pickups and always have been puzzled that a bunch of Top Gear fans went that route when developing this spiritual sequel.
@The_Pixel_King I didn't have a SNES, but I did play that World Championship Racing game (and the earlier "Nigel Mansell's Grand Prix") on my ZX Spectrum, which was 11-year-old technology by then, and even on that it was pretty fun. However, by then I'd also discovered Geoff Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix on the Amiga, and that was the one that devoured all my time for a good couple of years.
AYRTON, AYRTON, AYRTOOOOOON SENNA DO BRASIL SIL SIL SIL
Um dos maiores heróis nacionais, dentro e fora do esporte. Ser humano GIGANTE!
AYRTON, AYRTON, AYRTOOOOOON SENNA FROM BRAZIL ZIL ZIL
One of the greatest national heroes, inside and outside the sport. GIANT human being!
@masterLEON
That was my only issue with it. I might pick it up on PS5 unless it's still present there.
@masterLEON what's odd about this is it gets worst the longer you play, then goes away if you shut down and start again. It makes record attempts virtually impossible when it starts.
@SpringDivorce I've only ever watched it be played on PS(4) but have never seen it stutter.
Nice
We had the classic Top Gear experience.
Now, the Super Monaco GP experience.
@SpringDivorce I'll definitely be looking up videos just to make sure. There's no excuse for hitching on a game like this.
@papa_frezz That's the weirdest part! The game started microstuttering consistently after an hour! And picking up the first gas can of a race literally caused a split-second pause. This has all the earmarks of a memory leak that they didn't pin down in testing.
@Atariboy I found that odd too that they didn't do the pit stop scene like in Top Gear. To be honest I am not a big fan of how they did refueling in Horizon Chase Turbo.
Interested to hear how this plays. Really enjoyed the world tour mode, but found myself a bit frustrated by the “bumper cars” from the more narrow tracks. Looks like this expansion has a lot more road to spread out on, so I might jump on this!
So, to buy the expansion for Switch, or see if the main game is discounted at all on PS4/5?
I bought the PS4 dlc. I can confirm it's a essential one If you like F1-history. Awesome job.
This was the first switch game I bought. It is a good one for sure. Just keeps on giving.
am i the only one who preordered this then saw the DLC was ready and it's NOT working? I've restarted my switch, deleted and redownloaded just the software then the DLC seperately and nothing! pls hlp
Thank you for the reminder
Nice some F1 racing...now I might have to play again (I only have 30 mins logged) or at least give me a reason to.
They get my monies. I love this game and more content is grande.
Big respect to one of the greatest F1 drivers and big respect to this game that IMO is one of the best driving games apart from the Forza Horizon series! Yep will be adding this DLC to the game.
Aquiris, the studio behind this are doing some interesting things, theybhave a game called Wonderbox which looks almost like a Zelda Maker, if I was Nintendo i'd be talking to them about a partnership, exclusive titles or an acquisition.
@SakuraHaruka Ahhh, those Built to Win F-1 stages. Never could beat the second to last race...dang hairpins!!
Downloading now this game is a masterpiece and I wish I had all this on a physical cart. It deserves good sales. I think I’m most looking forward to the first person mode.
Wow that is incredible. Looking forward to downloading and trying that out. A true legend of his profession
@SoManyHaveDied Do you own the physical or digital version? If you own the physical, as I do, did you buy the DLC through the eShop directly or through the game menu? Last I knew, if you owned the physical you were supposed to purchase the DLC through the game menu only.
Edit: Scratch that. I just checked and you do indeed have to buy it directly through the eShop.
Saving this for the Christmas holidays - if I can resist the temptation...!!
Note: if you own the physical ve5rsion of this game do not buy this DLC as it does not work with it or recognise you have purchased it. The developers are also at this time saying nothing about it or seem to be fixing it. Very disappointing. I actually bought it a second time on PS4 to play it.
@PoliticallyIncorrect figured it out. since i'm in asia and my switch is american (as well as account) i guess it presumed it was ready? had to wait til midnight my time and then there was an update and boom! senna time!
@YANDMAN So it doesn't work? I had my suspicion this would happen.
@PoliticallyIncorrect it only works if you bought the full game digitally, if you have the physical like me it does not register that you've purchased the dlc. I've messaged them four times now and nobody responds, yet they shared my twitter post when i was excited about its release.
@YANDMAN I have the physical as well. I went into the menu and hit the DLC, which took me to the shop and the DLC was not available. However, the eShop page for the DLC does not warn about this like the last 2 DLC did.
@PoliticallyIncorrect I literally just cannot understand what is going on, or why it isn't compatible. The developer's comments on twitter are that they seemingly don't know anything about it, or are going to do anything about it. It's really really poor service from a studio I had so much respect for.
I love the game but performance on switch has always been a bit off for me. Some little hitches or quick periods of slowdown that are noticeable be because of how smooth the game otherwise is and needs to be.
@ryancraddock any chance you could reach out to the team again? The issue with physical versions not being able to access the dlc has not been resolved
