In this Soapbox feature, Gavin reminisces about the old days when Nintendo made multiple racing games...
Earlier this week was the 20th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, but there's another Nintendo 64 game that debuted exactly two decades ago, albeit on the other side of the globe. In the catalogue of Nintendo-published games, Left Field Productions' Excitebike 64 is rarely held up as a stone-cold classic, but I have great memories of the game that launched in North America on 30th April 2000. To me it represents exactly the sort of quality 'B-tier' game Nintendo hasn't put out for a long time - and the type of game Switch could really benefit from right now.
In the late '90s Nintendo was looking for a way to update its old motocross IP and ended up throwing the keys to the Excitebike series at Canadian developer Left Field Productions, the third-party team who were behind the fondly-remembered NBA Courtside games. Shifting the gameplay from side-on to behind-the-rider 3D, the 64-bit entry melded the careful pitch and throttle control of the original game with the subtle mechanics of N64 stablemates Wave Race 64 and 1080° Snowboarding to produce something just as deep, rewarding and addictive as those racers.
a solid entry in any one of those franchises would be a lovely bit of counter-programming for gamers who aren't utterly enamoured with Animal Crossing
In addition, Excitebike 64 included the original NES Excitebike, another 3D version of that game, a track editor and a bunch of multiplayer modes, including a giant soccer game mode (it's not exactly Rocket League, but it can be fun with four players).
The game wasn't perfect, of course. It arrived very late in the console's life (releasing in Europe in June 2001, over a year after its North American launch), and going back to it now reveals patchier performance than I remember at the time. The controls still feel fantastic, though and although I've never been a fan of the original Excitebike, both this and Excite Truck on Wii are massively underappreciated racing games in my book.
Those games (along with F-Zero X, I'd argue) had an arcade-style appeal but with added texture and the depth of a sim - the thinking gamer's arcade racers. The controls were nuanced and took real effort to master. You had to use your head and really read the terrain to get the most out of them, but the feeling of cresting a wave at just the right time, or spraying up powder on a long sweeping curve, or threading the turbo just so to nail a perfect jump was unbeatable. Everyone remembers their first 1080, no?
It's a shame that Nintendo is leaving it to other companies to fill its roster of racing games on Switch when these series have been lying dormant for two generations or more. I've written before about these 'precision arcade racers' and how there's a gap to be filled in Switch's otherwise substantial library, but the 20th anniversary of Excitebike 64 once again has me pining for the days when Nintendo used to make racing games which didn't have Mario in them. Don't get me wrong, Mario and the gang are brilliant company, but I'm also partial to a little Dion Blaster and Ayumi Stewart of an evening.
Let's make no bones about it - none of the above games are system sellers, and it's understandable why they haven't been a focus, especially in the lean Wii U years. Nowadays, however, Nintendo has plenty of killer apps for Switch and a solid entry in any one of those franchises would be a lovely bit of counter-programming for gamers who aren't utterly enamoured with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Yes, they do apparently exist. Alternatively, it might be quite nice to squeeze in a jet ski race or some downhill slalom between fishing and selling turnips.
Will we ever see the likes of these again? Will "Tricky" Ricky Stern make a glorious comeback in HD some day? We can but hope. However, with a big question mark hovering over Nintendo's upcoming Switch releases for the rest of the year and beyond, there's certainly space for some smaller, more niche games to keep the hardcore happy in between tent-pole releases. Goodness knows Nintendo has the cash to fund these projects and they'd spice up the release schedule between the breadwinners. Go on Nintendo, you know it makes sense.
Which series would you most like to see make an HD comeback on Switch? Let us know in the poll below:
Frankly, is there anyone who doesn't want a new F-Zero?! That's why you can choose two.
Got a soft spot for these games? Who's the best Ricky - Winterborn or Stern? Let us know with a comment below and join us in raising a glass to these blue-collar N64 classics and toasting 20 years of Excitebike 64.

I agree. But Nintendo won’t release any of them
Been praying for a new wave race for years!
Not to mention a new f-zero, pilotwings (which is more than a tech demo like the 3DS “game”) and excitebike. I’d even settle for a re-release of excitetruck from the wii!
I’d sell my soul for a new waverace game.
Was torn between Wave Race and F-Zero. In the end went with Wave Race because I like bouncing up and down on the waves. Problem with Wave Race games is they never have many tracks.
I’d settle for an N64 app at this rate. Might as well have the classics if they can’t be bothered doing anything other than the obvious series.
I think F Zero will happen eventually, they need the right studio for it though and I don't know if they have the correct in house people for the job. Shin'en might be the best bet for a task like that as they are practically a sole Nintendo developer anyway.
PilotWings before any of those.
I don't understand how this series can get so little love...
I know this isn’t a Nintendo IP but I wouldn’t mind a remaster midnight club LA or any midnight club on switch. Loved those games
I am glad that we get experimental ideas like Splatoon and ARMS, but there is always room for existing franchises.
I’d love a new WaveRace but I’m not sure if it would live up to the original. I never really got on with Blue Storm, it just didn’t seem to match the handling of the original, so any developer would need to look very closely at what made the 64 game so special before embarking on a new one.
I think there’s definitely a niche in the market for “meatier realistically themed arcade racing games”. They’re never going to be mega sellers in this day and age (for similar reasons why arcade sports games have died) but they add prestige and appeal very much to an important group of players.
A modern wave race with Nintendo behind it would be amazing.
I wouldn't mind F Zero, but I was never a fan of those types of games outside Mario Kart. I can see why they would be a hit with more of the casual audience and broaden the Switch's library, but "NEED?"
Maybe.
We need more Nclusives~!!
@Gofixmeaplate man this and gta 1&2 wouldn't hurt as well ;p
F zero and Excite Truck for me, was playing Excite truck yesterday and it still holds up. As for F zero, Nintendo's mishandling of that franchise will go down in history as the most narrow minded affair.
No F zero racing battle royale? Death race was born to be FtP Switch online incentive, along with Tetris 99.
Like others have said, Pilotwings please!
Although, we haven't waited as long as F-ZERO fans, so I'd be happy to see that first!
Definitely agree, I’ll take Wave Race.
For me, Wave Race and 1080!
Let's not forget about Cruis'n series that are also Nintendo's IP.
And Pillotwings.
....
TBH, any of these games would be great.
An F-Zero GX HD remake would be enough for me, and include a download code for F-Zero X as a pre-order bonus.....
Other than that a new Wave Race would be amazing!!
Only 2 choices I want them all plus pilotwings
I loved 1080, even a virtual console release would make me happy.
Which ones? And "you can select two"?
Hell, no: I want ALL of them, stat. Get your booty in gear, Nintendo, and give the people what they want...
Wave Race 64 is purely classic. I want more like it.
F-ZEROOOOO!! We need another one, ASAP.
I don't really care about the rest, although I'd be glad to see them for those who like em.
Any of the Cruzin USA games
I'd love if Excitebots came back. Such a underrated Wii game with a lot of replay value
I'd be happy just to have an N64 Online service or something similar. Bonus points if they enhance the games in small ways such as improving framerate, removing the weird blur filter, etc.
If they do another F-zero, all I ask is that they let Sega handle it. F-Zero GX was exceedingly well done and proof that Sega is more than up to the task.
F-Zero, man if only that would get a new game. I need some fast paced racing. I'm tired of go-karts.
F-Zero GX...that is all
I'm begging for a new Wave race game. Also port F-Zero GX to the Switch
Never mind the Switch. WE need these games. We haven’t had a sequel to the awesome Excitebike since the N64, we haven’t had a good F-Zero sequel since the N64 (X is way better than GX, don’t argue) and we haven’t had a sequel to 1080 since the GameCube. Absolutely awesome Nintendo IPs just languishing. All different types of racer and all equally amazing.
@Mjoen I'm surprised someone here remembers that IP! My favorite was/is Cruisn' Exotica. I still remember my excitement when my father bought it for me back in the day.
Other than that my vote went for F-Zero and Wave Race, with 1080 coming third.
Nintendo trailer zooms in to reveal an F-Zero racer...
On a board. F-Zero Party! Falcon and Friends compete to finish the board game race while wacky events and minigames happen! But make sure to manage your fuel, or it's game over! F-Zero Party! Out Holiday 2020!
Wave Race and 1080 all day. With a dash of F-Zero for good measure
The issues isn't that these games aren't big system sellers. Fire Emblem and Kirby aren't big system sellers, but they are still getting made.
The issue is that these games might not even be profitable. Maybe F-Zero has a chance at returning because of Captain Falcon's consistent appearance in Smash Bros, but does anyone outside of the extremely hardcore Nintendo fanbase care about Excitebike, Wave Race, and 1080 Snowboarding beyond them being tech showcases back in the day??
F-Zero had a nod in Mario Kart 8. Look, we have to be realistic. It's much easier for us to ask for a new F-Zero than it is to come up with a new take on it. If Nintendo don't have a direction for it, why on Earth are we asking for one? Come on guys, we are Nintendo players not Activision / EA drones asking for the same game every year.
There is room for Nintendo to do another racing game, but rather than ask for a new version of a game, I'm happy if it's something new. If they can make their new idea fit with a franchise, then fine. Like, how many times do you a play a Nintendo game and wonder why someone hasn't thought of that? Answer is simply, because they aren't thinking 'let's do that again with more beards.'
Besides, I don't want F-Zero with no analogues for drifting. It would be a step backwards. So 1080 gets my vote. But what's left to do with Snowboarding games apart from better visuals.
1080º first, then maybe the rest and Pilotwings and the Rogue Squadron games as a cherry on top.
F-Zero and MK9. Remove the unintentional shortcuts by taking out self-looping, "jump"ing (think MKWii Maple Treeway), closeby/passing, and roundabout track segments, and LET'S GOOOOOO
I'll never understand what made Wave Race 64 so good... I'm really not into racing games other than Mario Kart... but I spent a ton of time with Wave Race.
We have over 5 futuristic racing games in Switch Library, some of them TOP QUALITY.
Nintendo Library misses a good Racing Sim. V Rally, WRC etc are just games downgraded to Switch. I just started Gran Turismo 5 in my dusty PS3 and it was waaaaaay better in graphics. This is sad. Nintendo SHOULD invest to a First Party Racing Sim.
F-Zero. F-Zero. F-ZERO!!!
Fast RMX is very good, but a bit soulless, and sometimes needlessly frustrating.
Not sure that these would make a huge splash individualy, but would be cool if they had a pack of modernized mini-games....
If you talk about Excitebike 64's soccer mode (the worst little extra mode in the game) instead of the procedurally generated desert race mode (a rarity at the time) and the fantastic uphill and downhill modes, then I feel the writer missed the real qualities of the game. However, if they had put a little more effort into the soccer mode, then Nintendo could have had their own Rocket League back in 2000. Anyway, give me Excite Truck Remastered or F-Zero 99 and I won't need any more racing games this gen.
We are getting Star Wars Episode 1 Racer...which is great but how great would that be with an online component?!?!
Wave Race forever! That game is still to this day my favourite water-based racer.
A decent budget Wave Race 64 Remake would be gold!
They can keep water physics and original levels, add 3-4 new levels and both local and online multiplayer.
i am possitively surprised how Excitebike 64 still looks and feels so freshly and entertaining.
@Mgene15 yes it’s the same with sega, we want Daytona, rally, Manx TT, jet set, crazy taxi, and they won’t release these either.
I wasn't all that big into Excitebike. But I would embrace either a new F-Zero, Wave Race or 1080. Or all three of Nintendo were feeling very good about them.
I would rather have Road Rage for the Switch but of course my jacked up defective Joycon would ruin the fun.
I'm going to say no to all of those. The Switch doesn't need a game that will sell < 1 million. These games all have had their times on older consoles but where never any popular (except for the "core" crowd)
Do I want them though?
Yes.
Racing games? Meh. Switch needs more games from Nintendo like Paper Mario, Golden Sun, Earthbound...
Yeah, just made an account in order to reply to this article.
What is clear is that there is huge pent-up demand amongst Nintendo's vast international fanbase for new games in this loose collection of games. If the next Nintendo Direct started with a trailer for a stunning, modern blue skies watery Wave Race people would go nuts. For me it would be a 'megaton' out of all proportion.
The Switch library is great, don't get me wrong, but there is a gap for high-production value knockabout arcade racing games like these. A new Ridge Racer, exclusive to the Switch, would also be very welcome.
Nintendo can very frustrating. They have so many wonderful intellectual properties that fans want to revisit. I can't help but think that they are missing opportunities to collaborate with developers around the world on their franchises.
I remember thinking that after Steep was cancelled on Switch that the assets could have been repurposed into a new 1080 Snowboarding game. Perhaps the open-world design of Steep just couldn't work on Switch, so why not get the developers to put the engine they had created or optimised to good use with a new version or even a remake of the original N64 classic?
I can't recall the last non-Mario Kart racing game that Nintendo has developed or published. Excite Truck, a launch window title for the Wii, is the last I can think of. Such a strange state of affairs - Mario Kart is their best selling game, so why not expand the genre? Like, why not make a new Diddy Kong Racing? People clearly love fun racers.
I suspect that they probably have been working on something in the past. Star Fox Grand Prix sounded great, in theory, and it may very well have been Retro's mystery game. Perhaps it got cancelled in the end - something was going on there. If I recall correctly, Criterion were considering a new F-Zero collaboration with Nintendo at the beginning of the last decade, but it sadly fell through.
Nintendo has faced development challenges in recent times, with many of their studios having to help each other out. I'm not sure why Nintendo has so many issues with implementing online, finishing games, producing HD titles. A company with as much money as they have should not be short of a bob or two when it comes to developing games.
Only time will tell if we see these games return. What is clear is the Nintendo that produced them in the first place is not the same company today. I feel Nintendo is a smaller developer in some ways. Development studies are probably bigger than ever, but output is much less than it once was.
I'll finish this near-essay by stating that 1080 Snowboarding is my all time favourite game. I decided recently that I, in fact, do prefer it to Ocarina of Time, which has been my No. 1 choice for twenty years. 1080 is a near perfectly designed snowboarding experience and remains a job to play to this day. I am also partial to Wave Race Blue Storm - it too holds up and plays beautifully, with some astounding visual effects and contains a myriad of sheer 'fun' moments.
I hope we see these titles re-emerge in the not too distant future.
@Krull
True, but Switch players have many RPGs choices as it is, but few quality racing games to pick from. The library on Switch should be little more balanced in my view so that everyone is catered for, not just RPG fans.
I'm up for having all four on the Switch.
@GrailUK new take on F zero? It was in it's death race game mode, it is Battle Royale with stupidly fast vehicles! Nintendo could have stormed the genre ages ago. They could do that for Online free to play and then follow up with an actual 30 players multiplayer game? F zero championship. It writes itself.
It also needs a Strand type game. What a genre.
@wazlon There's only been two. In hindsight Nintendo, could probably only fit so much into tiny carts and tiny discs. Hopefully it won't be their awful NST team again who completely missed the point of what made 1080 and Wave Race classics on the N64, they went all arcadey, americanised and hip to copy SSX.
I miss snowboard games like 1080 snowboarding. Played the halfpipe for weeks to beat my own score. Realy loved the game!.
wave race would be sick
I'd prefer ExciteTruck...
@RileyR
@Flugen Nintendo don't make simulators. They create arcade, fantastic, irreal stuff, and they're great at that, but not at simulators. Nothing they've done, at least for a long time, is "realistic". You're asking that to the wrong people (it's better to ask for a third party port).
I'm saying it right here: Mach Rider reboot at the next big direct. Its just left field enough for it to make perfect sense to exist.
@FargusPelagius I don't think there are many folk at Nintendo who think "let's make a Battle Royale" game. When something writes itself...it's just parroting. They have to bring something to the table themselves. I don't know, what hasn't been done before?
Can't add weapons, that wouldn't be F-Zero. Hmm. Maybe you could play more on the zero friction aspect and tweak how the cars grip the road. In the original, the car gained traction when you depress / press accelerate. Maybe they could develop the mechanics of that game play. Or they could add a new feature to the tracks no one has thought of. Not even Nintendo yet, which is why we haven't got a new game lol.
I don't think that Nintendo really cares about fans or anything other than money but if they do care then hear me say Wave Race!
@GrailUK The pilots could do attacks. Samurai Goroh and Captain Falcon are practically screaming for that opportunity. Falcon Punch a nearby vehicle and throws its steering off/makes it lose some energy.
@Shinra And therein lies the problem. Folk are wanting newer versions of their fave IP, but Nintendo have to come up with something new (and folk really do gaming a disservice calling them gimmicks) and then see if it can be applied to a franchise. I can appreciate it can be frustrating waiting for those two timelines to cross, but on the contrary, it's how they keep reinventing gaming. It sounds like total fanboy nonsense I know (and I have no idea how I can make it sound otherwise!) but anyone in the industry plays Nintendo games for that reason.
The problem with F-zero, Excitebike 64 on the Switch is that they will eat into the sales of lesser games that I'm not buying : P
With the Mario remasters coming, maybe there are plans for these games in the future.
I think we only got this diversity due to direct competition and at the time Nintendo was desperately trying to please everyone so they didn’t jump ship.
Now for Nintendo it’s just 5-6 big hitters then onto a new console. And repeat.
Mario
Zelda
AC
Smash
kart
Splatoon
A new F-Zero as an evolution of GX would be amazing. All the awesome vehicles and characters and tracks plus the chance to build your own personal racer with unlockable parts.
Nintendo have a real chance to produce a next-gen racer that fully realises what they did with GX, and also steals the crown from Wipeout.
I'd even take a cell-shaded version of it, as long as it means they can pack in more sweet content.
Career mode for all characters plus a blank career for your own custom-built character/racer.
Challenge modes with various different win-conditions required to progress.
Loads of unlockable vehicle parts and maybe an option for armed races where everyone gets a main weapon/sub weapon combo and can take out the other racers.
Oh well, I can dream.
We need another F-Zero, yes but sports games are a dull, repetitive affair that lack innovation and imagination. I love games with engrossing narratives, clever puzzles and memorable musical scores. Not some dumb sport title that advocates scoring points and wearing silly sports attire in attempts of replicating some airheaded sports star‘s movesets. (I love exercising and all but never saw the appeal for sports culture and its fandoms...) Video games involve direct input from players, televised sports offer no direct control and the fans yell and scream at the screen like lunatics. Truly bizarre.
@KingBowser86 Captain Falcon would save fisticuffs till after the race man! Hehe. Seriously though, how would your combat work at 1000 mph? (Honest question, it wasn't a put down.)
I really miss these "arcade Nintendo racing games", I had some hopes for a Wii U or Switch F-Zero episode after the cameos int the MK8 DLCs. But sadly, Nintendo didn't do anything. It seems to be like a no brainer to just tweek the MK8 engine a little and make a great F-Zero game.
Ok, F-Zero RPG. Make the races 20 laps or something ridiculous like Le Mans. The view is in the cockpit, with a monitor at the bottom of the screen and stories unfold during the race. Your actions on the track trigger other pilots to give you dialogue on the monitor to add drama and objective scenarios during the race. This will create rivalry. And you can quest further after each race in Mute City and all the other places. Heck add fighting scenes so folk can Falcon Punch their hearts out. F-Zero Rivals. Solve crime and corruption, win the season and get the girl. Lol. (See why I don't design games.)
Edit - this is just a train of thought lol. And I'm not even convinced it's still F-Zero!
@Shinra That’s 100% fair. I don’t begrudge anyone their racing games, really, even though it’s probably my least favourite genre. I’m surprised at how thin the stable is on Switch. There’s probably more decent shooters even.
Brilliant article, you speak my mind.
A wave race game similar to hydro thunder would be awesome. There was enough tracks ( from what I remember on dreamcast).
@GrailUK Best I can figure, they manipulate modules in their vehicles. So Captain Falcon wouldn't be punching, a mechanical falcon-shaped "battering ram" would. Now, not always the case — Samurai Goroh could throw out orb-like smoke bombs, but they stick to the vehicle and generate a fog/smoke effect on the windshield. Or another more alien character could use mind powers to flip another driver's left and right. This sort of thing.
I know I'll get called out for this but I don't care. I think Wave Race and 1080 are very over rated. I don't miss them. I owned, actually still own, both and they were/are played little.
I can't comment on Excitebike 64. I never got my hand on it but I have very fond memories of the NES version. That start up tune is sooooo, catchy, right?
F-zero though... bring it on!
All of the above please.
1080 is a definite for me. I'd take a remaster or even a port of F-Zero GX. As I've said several times before, just slap emulations of 1080 Avalanche, Wave Race Blue Storm and F-Zero GX on a cart and call it Racing Replay or something, sell it for £40, and collect the cash. Wipeout Omega Collection and Crash Team Racing show there's a substantial market for retro racers.
@KingBowser86 It could work, but F-Zero's hook for me was the arcade thrill ride of pure racing at the fastest possible speed known to man!) I'm sure if someone flipped my controls I would go mental hahah! I reckon it would be a similar deal to boosts and restricted use somehow. Otherwise, balancing 50 racers with different abilities would be the stuff of nightmares. You would have to release regular patches to nerf / buff each racer so everyone took turns being imba.
Bear in mind, the reason why we hold some games in such high regard is because they challenged a genre or brought something new to the table. If we do get a modern version, it can be 60FPS and 1080P till the cows come home, if it doesn't reinvent itself somehow, you aren't going to get that buzz. And then say it's not as good as the original (without putting your finger on why.)
I chose Wave Race and Excite Bike, but I want to vote for all choices.
Nintendo Presents: Forgotten Classics Compilation!
F-Zero
Wave Race
1080 Snowboarding
ExciteBike
Pilotwings
Enjoy classic titles from all these classic series'. Now on Switch so you can play at home or on the go!
"Which racing series would you like to ride again?"
Yes.
Let the successor to the successful Operation Rainfall be known as OPERATION REV-ALL.
Motorcycles, trucks, watercraft, airplanes and anti-grav machines are all deserving and the concepts are capable of cross-pollination. (Wave Race on low-gravity planets with 1000 m waterfalls and river rapids. F-Zero through dense atmospheres to produce wave interactions à la Wave Race.) I despise Twitter and lack an account, but the hashtag method may work, and I will beat the drum for this to my last breath.
@Rika_Yoshitake It is not the Switch that "needs" these B-tier titles, it is the video-game industry as a whole. B-tier titles require less risk, broaden a library, attract a diverse audience and enhance respect and loyalty among the players. By the same token, you could say that the Switch does not require Metroid - but esteem for Nintendo increases with successful releases of that franchise. Remember, this company still publishes games like BoxBoy.
@DevlinMandrake A career mode with all those characters would be extremely amusing. What dedicated F-Zero GX player has not wondered what Bio Rex eats for lunch?
@GrailUK All friction/surface-based racers can use HD Rumble to convey the texture of a surface, even when surfaces appear similar or are not visible due to fog/obscuration. Players would navigate portions of tracks mainly by rumble. Is that a new enough gameplay element?
@GrailUK Oh, they wouldn't last long enough to be imbalanced, in my mind. Just enough to slow someone down a bit and clutch the win.
Plus, gives the racers meaningful, individual flavor. e.g. Falcon's is used to stop criminals without being utterly lethal, Black Shadow's could be straight and significant Energy damage as he's a villain, etc.
Please please please bring back 1080 Snowboarding! I would also love to see a new Wave Race. Excitebike is sorta whatever and F-Zero isn't that big of a deal to me anymore.
I wish they would bring the Wii era excite games forward. I enjoyed them back in the day...
@COVIDberry Indeed. Certainly something for a group of folk to brainstorm ideas from. Certain feedback could actually require a specific response etc. Nice!
Thats a hard one. As wave race, 180 and Fzero were 3 of my favorites. One game id prob take over all of them tho is another pilot wings. That game was amazing on the 64. Lost all of its soul when it went to 3ds tho with those rediculous Mii's. To be honest id really be happy with a reboot of any of those IP's. Chuck in a little star fox and were good to go.
I played Wave Rave 64 (on a real N64) last weekend and for some reason I couldn't get the turning right (my controller has a tight stick, btw). Wife was overlapping me, lol. I was doing stuff like holding back + left/right to try and cut through waves while turning, I'd end up barely turning at all. Egads!
I have never agreed with a "soap box" article more than I do with this one.
@GrailUK You make reasonable points about difficulty innovating these genres, but you seem to be overlooking the fact that Nintendo could just port the existing games with remastered graphics and they would probably sell as well as, if not better than, a brand new iteration.
F-Zero is the one I want most, and then Wave Race. I loved 1080° Avalanche on Gamecube so if they made another one, I'd want it to play and feel like that one, more so than the N64 game which i had a much harder time getting into. Excitebike I just don't feel the same nostalgia for, sorry. I did enjoy Excite Truck and Excitebots on Wii though! I loved that Excite Truck let you play your own mp3 music from the SD card in the system.
1080 then wave race , fzero and excite bike for me. All fantastic games though.
does snowboard kids count?
1080 and FZERO absolutely need to return! Id prefer an excite truck sequel actually.
@westman98 I imagine they all produced a profit on the Nintendo 64 (definitely WaveRace 64 and Fzero (for the SNES)), but then once Nintendo proper quit developing these games and they went to Sega, NST, etc, the sales went down. Possibly cause Nintendo puts more resources into games Nintendo EAD makes and possibly cause Nintendo EAD puts more effort into coming up with new gimmicks to improve the core game mechanics.
Excitebots 2, please.
I just want a new Diddy Kong Racing and/or Beetle Adventure Racing. Any of these other series would be lovely as well - especially F-Zero.
I know it’s not a Nintendo game, but I was recently thinking about how I miss racing games like Extreme-G. I loved these games too.
What a great article. Wave race blue storm would be great - people misunderstand this game, it really has the most fantastic gameplay. You just have to master it to see the depth; unfortunately many people found it too difficult and disregarded it as a result as 'unplayable'.
@GrailUK I don't know if that's what you personally want, or if you think Nintendo feels like it HAS to reinvent the wheel every time.
Me, I'm perfectly fine with a new Wave Race or 1080 or F-Zero that offers more of the same, much like what Mario Kart is doing, by the way. Over the decades, they really haven't added all that much, other than vehicle customization and other vehicles. And rehashing/refurbishing old tracks, something they could also do on F-Zero. There's two SNES games, a Game Boy Advance game, an N64 and a GameCube game, so more than enough tracks to choose from and to re-imagine in HD.
Certain genres, especially racers, don't NEED to have a new gimmick every time. Just more of what it already had, and a new lick of paint. Just look at the popularity of the Forza and Forza Horizon series on Xbox: hasn't really changed either, besides the points I already mentioned, so this incessant and rather stupid idea of Nintendo that a new game in a series MUST offer something new is completely insane and out of touch to me.
I'm pretty sure that millions upon millions of fans of each of the games mentioned in this poll would even be happy with a simple HD re-imagining of the same games, much like how they were happy with Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD where Zelda is concerned. Those two games are more or less proof of that.
But no, let's just allow series to rot away because we can't think of something new and potentially gimmicky to do with them...
They all for sure, need a revival. But I’d be most hyped for 1080 and F-Zero.
@Kabloop Personally I have been begging for some new snowboarding games for a long time now. I really don't care if it's called 1080, Cool Boarders, Amped, SSX, or whatever, just give me a good snowboarding game! It's been far too long.
@ThanosReXXX @gcunit I totally understand you guys ^^. I don't think Nintendo have to reinvent the wheel every time, but they sure as hell try. Their legacy is built on innovation of gameplay. In my book, it's why I regard them so highly. It has never been about graphics. D-pad, motion, gyro. It's all about gamepl- oh my God. That's it! F-Zero with x/y axis gyro controls. The tracks would be crazy!!!
Nintendo just aren't that set on resting on laurels. After leaving the tech race, it's the one thing they've got. They have the luxury of artistic freedom. They can create anything right now. If it fit's with a franchise great, ker-ching. But on a profound level, if the design brief says F-Zero, you hamstring creativity because you gave it a boundary. For the record, my train of thought wasn't strictly what I want. It was more trying to illustrate how hard it is to come up with something. Even a first idea would get brainstormed into something else. And, I'm sure, if Snowboarding became as relevant in the mainstream as it was in the late 90s, we would see a 1080. I do hope we see re-releases. I mean, they did see releases on the WiiU so I'm not sure where the narrative of them being forgotten has come from, so maybe Nintendo are just slotting them into a road map for Online or something.
Anything other than F-Zero. Mario Kart 8 already emulates as much of the F-Zero experience as I'm interested in trying. I've been banging on the table for years about there needing to be another racing series that isn't just the same old driving mechanics as the dozens of other racing games out there, and even though the likes of Mario Kart is technically a different kind of racer from the Forzas and the Burnouts and the Gran Turismos of the world, because it still involves driving it feels similar. The racing genre is sorely lacking in diversity right now and could use something like a Wave Race or a 1080 Snowboarding. Or if you even want to go outside of Nintendo franchises, I'd welcome anything like Sonic R or Sonic Riders (probably with a new IP though, since SEGA seems to have no interest in bringing either of these series back). Just something other than the bland driving simulators the industry has been spamming to kingdom come the last 10-20 years.
"needs" is a strong word
Yeah, I would love to see next gen versions of all those games.
A new Wave Race and F-Zero please!
I take back everything I said about analogue triggers for drifting. They could just use gyro controls. It would even allow some vertical input if the tracks need it. Add on HD rumble to convey traction / friction. I reckon there is plenty to go it. Get to work Ninty! ^^
@ThanosReXXX You must be joking - Mario kart 8/deluxe was a revolution. You can say that some old tracks made a return, but those, the entire handling model, the premise of multiple axes and many more aspects make the game much more than just an evolution. I don’t think Nintendo would be happy with a straightforward evolution of their major series’. In fact revolution, not evolution is their central premise, that’s why we love them.
@GrailUK heresy! Gyro controls for drift would be such a let down
@andykara2003 I wish I could be so definite. (If you ever played the Atari Star Wars game, sideways movement down the death star trench with the handle bars is quite similar to the gyro motion and I never had any probs with that game. Heck, that could even lend itself to racing with gyro controls!) If you build the gameplay and tracks around it, it could be sublime. For example, if your car tilts at the same angle as the controller while drifting, you could have obstacles involving tilting through gaps / obstacles which would be more visually intuitive than making sure you apply the right pressure. SO yeah, applying it to what you know would be heresy. But games built around gameplay tend to work out for the best. I'm just thinking aloud. Btw.
@GrailUK I like your thought processes. Not for me, but I expect you're right in that it could be done really well
@NoNoseNosferatu I see you couldn't even make your HS badminton team, had to sit with the goth kids at lunch and now taking it out on the jocks in here. No worries I still love you.
@Kabloop I dunno about 1080 but fzero had memorable music and courses. Mute city. Wind. Fire. Anyways yes you could maybe slap 1080 on any good snowboarding game but I dunno if you could do the same with Fzero
@ThanosReXXX honestly they could make a widescreen hd version of the original fzero and add in online and wireless local play and I'd buy it in a second.
@kkslider5552000 the only thing anyone "needs" right now is a vaccine. That said its just a saying which I'm sure you knew anyways. Maybe you're the semantics police.
@andykara2003 I'm not saying I'm right, but I do like to stray outside the box from time to time. At the very least, it might inspire something else.
I like the idea of a compilation. Include the old roms. But also have a whole new game. Heck, make it like those vacation games. Big old hub. Customizable character (outfit unlocks for completing challenges). Have an arcade for the roms. Then different hub areas for the new versions. An Excite area, where you can race bikes or trucks. A beach area for Wave Race. Snowy mountain for 1080, with different courses. Do a VR room for F-Zero. A little airport on the island for Pilotwings. Shoot. I think thatd sell incredibly well.
Why on earth would we want these games when we have vroom in the night sky...
If they bring any of these series back, they really can't be less than stellar games. Let's take Streets of Rage 4, for example. They dug up a franchise that had been dead for 26 years, and made an awesome game that meets or exceeds the 3 other entries. But image if SOR4 had stunk, what a bummer that'd be. IF Nintendo brings any of them back, they better be awesome, or why resurrect them at all?
Surprised there’s so little love for Excitebike. 😢
Nintendo needs more of its retro games from the N64 on up period. They loathe the usage of roms, of course, and emulation at home, yet do little to combat it by keeping so many of their consoles and catalogues off their current systems
I'd be happy with F-Zero GX with updated graphics and online.
@roboshort
All of those games sold well at one point, but I'm struggling to see an audience for any of them in the current day gaming landscape.
I dont think people remember, but Ubisoft released Steep on PS4/XBO/PC back in holiday 2016 and that game was quickly forgotten about. How is 1080 Snowboarding going to be any different? Maybe some N64 nostalgia will propel it a bit, but that's it.
You're also right that Nintendo is prioritizing other bigger games (i.e. as far as I know, Breath of the Wild 2 was targeting a 2020 release back in 2019, which no longer seems possible due to current circumstances).
Snowboarding kids. Ninttendo 64 port or remake
@sixrings I was Goth, yes, I never played Badminton; I was in Cross Country/Track and Field. Studied History, Illustration, Geography, Japanese, Literature and Photography.
What’s your point?
Jocks are just pea brained sycophants and with your recent comments, you are clearly act like one of them...
(Last I checked- nobody worth their salt, likes Jocks and their constant BS.)
@NoNoseNosferatu The most important people on earth do.... Ladies do.... Goodnight and secretly in high school I would have loved to have had a goth girl.
@sixrings uh, no. Lol.
They don’t.
People of value support intellectual discourse, fine music/art, cute goth babes, fine meals and so on.
(Not silly sports/jock endeavors)
(Seriously though- Goth Gals are the hottest Gals)
@Tibob : I wouldn't mind if Nintendo took the Pilotwings Resort approach to the series moving forward and make it a crossover series where you can explore popular areas from classic Nintendo games.
We need another Endless Ocean. The first Endless Ocean with HD graphics.
I love all of those games but I don’t think the Switch needs them. The obsession with extreme sports from the 90s is dead (I am a 90s kid so I am sad about that), and while fun arcade racers don’t command major numbers the way sim racers do now. Mario Kart works as a flagship mascot racer and with the franchise blending in 8 honestly I say mario kart cameos make the most business sense for these mothballed franchises.
The thing is you have to look at demographics and games that aren’t rated M have to be designed with the current young person in mind. Arcades are dead in most countries and phones provide a home for experiences that would sell middling otherwise. You don't have 15 year olds of either sex waxing on about playing snowboarding or fzero games. You have a bunch of 40 year olds making a lot of noise but at the end of the day either won’t put their money where their mouth is or there won’t be enough of them to be a reasonable ROI. The best arcade sports license Nintendo has is mario vs sonic which again sells ok and has mascot power behind it. And even that game is deved by SEGA.
If Nintendo tried to go the licensed route they’d have to sell mario or animal crossing numbers to get their money back and even steep an official game backed by mainstream darling ubisoft and the olympics sold...ok. A game full of obscure Nintendo characters with an arcade take isn’t going to move big numbers. And even worse the current gaming market is so volatile that if you don’t strike major hits it can ruin you. Nintendo can’t trot out its B listers like it used to. Game companies aren’t sitting on franchises for fun. However, these franchises have to be a decent revenue stream. Heck if metroid hadn’t become a fps I am almost certain it would have been shelved in the gamecube days.
If Nintendo didn’t really bring those franchises back during the 3ds when it was cheaper to make games and everybody has at least 2 of them I don’t see them trotting out the games now.
At best Nintendo can farm these characters to other franchises (mario kart or smash) or make a mobile game. Perhaps they will hit NSO eventually.
Disclaimer: As a fan I adore the arcade sports titles and I grew up on 1080 snowboarding and still play it now. However I try to look at things practically and not based on what I want.
I absolutely agree, and that for many years now. It is an area where the Switch and even the Wii U have been lacking a lot.
It would certainly enrich and diversify the Switch's library.
But Nintendo just don't seem interested in making these games because they're no systemsellers...
@the_beaver if Microsoft , a company that had no experience about video games could manage it with Forza then believe me Nintendo can do better if she wants. The question really is “why she don't try?”
They could fuse Excite bike and Excite truck with each other and make one game of it🤔😁
Would love these series back, it would really make and feel the switch more diverse
Excite Truck Remastered. C’mon Nintendo.
@Kriven I often dream about a cross over of WaveRace, 1080 and Excitebike all on the same island - a bit like wuhu island but bigger and more rich with detail. In story mode you start at your hut with an empty trophy cabinet basic gear etc, race calendar
and your jeep to drive to the events. Then you can choose to hit the shore for some Waverace or the mountain for 1080 or excitebike. When snowboarding down the mountain imagine excitebikes jumping over the piste and jet skis in the far off sea. There’ll be challenges for upgraded gear and intertwined story elements. Of course people can jump straight into traditional races without going into story mode if they choose. I need to stop dreaming like this. It makes me depressed.
@SortingHat
I dont think a micro-transactionless Steep would have pulled off any better sales than what Steep actually sold.
I'd love a new 1080 game with one condition: It's made as a 'period piece' of early 2000s extreme sports and has a fitting soundtrack to go with it, like Avalanche had.
@Silly_G Yes ! Also, being ablo to play as Nintendo characters (even if the game doesn't need it at all) would be very good for sales, and incorporate well with the Mario Kart / Golf / Tennis... declinaison.
@GrailUK
Nintendo does not apply that logic to Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin or Zelda. Not every game they produce is revolutionary or even innovative. If they applied that logic that you speak of to all their game series and only released games that were completely new we'd not be enjoying Smash Bros. Ultimate, Xenoblade 2, Mario Tennis or many other titles right now.
It's 19 years since the last Wave Race. There's nothing stopping Nintendo in theory from making a sequel - even if it's very similar to the previous entries. And the fans would lap it up - no pun intended!
F-Zero all the way but I’d buy them all! Bring back the death race!
@beazlen1
We need to make that happen! Sounds incredible!
Wouldn't it be great to get some sort of online campaign up and running to get Nintedno's attention to make a new Wave Race/1080/Excite game?
Just give us F-Zero x HD, or as nintendo worked with Shinnen to deliver fast racing. Why don' t they get them to re-skin that engine into a new F-Zero.
@GrailUK 100 racers on an expertly crafted track? With lots of routes. The track would be the star in a racing battle royale. It would also be literally and figuratively the fastest battle royale. Matches would be like 5-10 minutes depending on expertise. Not sure what you don't see that is innovative about that, not a single company has attempted it. Forza kind of tried a shrinking zone point to point, but No one has created a true Battle royale track. Nintendo have the skill and savvy to pull it off.
I bought wave race as an impulse for dirt cheap at the local game store and i found myself oddly enamored with it. Between the cheesy jazz-fusion music and the great graphics (for the N64!!) it's just such a good time! My other choice must be F-Zero, as a self proclaimed superfan...
@SortingHat I bet you're right, amigo!
@Steel76 I'd like to see a modern take on Ice climbers, Retro or Good feel (or hell both, do a collab) would be good fits. If they went the indie route, let team cherry or image and form. Both of those would give us a fun and interesting take.
@Shinra Haha, nice pun though That's as may be, but their creative process is still evident. When they introduce things like gravity defying tracks into Mario Kart, you can't hold it against them for wanting to put that into their bigger titles first. One could argue instead of MK8, they released F-Zero the Switch wouldn't be so successful. Mario Kart will continue to sell through the Switch's life. So if they do now come up with a racing idea, it could very well be a new IP or another instalment of an older one - IF it fits.
Zelda broke it's conventions.
Mario introduced the new Cappy gameplay.
Links Awakening had the dungeon creator
Gameplay is first man. They don't just make the same game again, unless they had simply too many ideas to fit into that game.
So no, I humbly disagree that they make the same games for Mario Kart etc. Double Dash is probably the most extreme example of doing something different.
Now please, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against them remastering old games. (Xenoblade Chronicles!!! YES! And even that has a new story mode) but Nintendo say themselves, time after time, a new instalment needs to be it's own game and a remake needs to bring something else to the table. I find it easier to accept what they say. (It's surprising how transparent they are with the plans - if not their actual games in development) If folk are so eager to just accept anything, then the hobby is in a sad state of affairs indeed.
@FargusPelagius Whereas I fail to see the innovation in thinking 'Let's make a Battle Royal <insert genre> game' I do confess it would suit F-Zero ^^. To be honest, I don't even think there is a need to just have a shrinking track, maybe after the 3rd lap, folk get disqualified in the last couple of places. That would be quite intense. But even then, this feels like a multiplayer option to the main game. But there again, any kind of idea they have like that, I'm sure they would see if it could fit Mario Kart before F-Zero. (This is the point I'm trying to make. They don't have franchises in mind, but if it suits, they go for it.)
@Tibob never played any pilot wings. Which would you say is the best for a beginner to get into the series?
@PuppyToucher
The N64 iteration is my favourite with four different islands, but I think the graphics and framerate didn't age very well. Today I'd say Pilotwings Resort on 3DS is the way to go (and you should find that one for cheap).
@SortingHat that sounds like an excellent idea. I've played USA and World as well but my favorite remains Exotica. Those games had a killer soundtrack as well.
@GrailUK agreed! At least MK8D allowed u to store two items, added new characters and added a meaty battle mode. I caved in to get DKTF bc I love the character but suck at the game. There is really very little reason to double dip on the WiiU remakes, unless u just have to play on the go.
@Kriven excellent idea!
I think Nintendo has missed out on some opportunities. I get that they have to manage their resources, and that the last decade was not kind Nintendo financially, at least from 2012-2016. But they should be in a better position to produce new content and or revitalize old content.
@rockodoodle The Windwaker remake on WiiU used the touchscreen (gah, I miss having a touchscreen controller) and had gyro aiming for the bow, grappling hook etc. It used the system they were developing for. I really don't get how folk don't see how they work.
Also to highlight a point. If you come up with a gameplay idea of possessing other monsters, Mario is such a universal video game character, it's a doddle to apply most gameplay element to him. You can work out how that possession happens. Throw his cap at him. It's just a cap. Well make it a character. There iwould have been loads of meetings about that alone lol! Mario is so flexible because Nintendo have curated an avatar to represent video game gameplay. That's what makes him so cool.
Conversely, if you have a history of making God of War and wanted to make Kratos possess enemies, well, you have a harder time crowbarring that in, in any believable way for it's fans. It sure as heck wouldn't be a cap lol. But I can't help feel western development wants to go straight to the 'ooh we could change the cap and make it an axe' train of thought as opposed to the previous step of actually coming up with the gameplay mechanism. And ok, that one might be ok, but if the next idea is a wacky tennis game. Well, lets see God Of War Tennis!
@GrailUK But that was just my entire point: they don't HAVE to. Somehow, over the years, they've convinced themselves that they have to, and look how many useless gimmicks it has given us. Regardless of how popular the Wii was (initially), and how much even I personally enjoyed it, ultimately, it only brought out a crap load of shovelware, Nintendo was behind the times, and from there on out, they have had to make a LOT of changes to get to where they are now, and they're STILL behind the times, on SO many levels. Blue ocean thinking is nice and all, but at the end of the day, you're providing a service to the public, and if the public wants something, then you should by all means respond to it, instead of waving it away and saying "but we can't come up with something new/innovative/revolutionary to do with these series, so we're not going to make new games out of them".
@andykara2003 I think you should not speak for others. Each and every one of us has a different opinion, and not everyone is of the same age either. I'm trying to look at this from an objective point of view, and theorize about why they would not make any new titles in these series, or why they think they would HAVE to add new and innovative things to them, instead of thinking purely like a Nintendo fan(boy).
If you look at Nintendo's main series in general, there has obviously been some innovation here and there, but it's not like "over the moon stellar never before seen" additions. Just fun additional features, but some titles have more of them than others, so apparently, this innovation drive isn't true for every Nintendo IP, or only to a lesser extent.
And personally, I've never seen anybody go hysterical when a new Mario Kart was announced. At least not because of all the wonderful new features. People just like to have a new Mario Kart, instead of having to play last gen's edition...
Looking at it in broader lines, the main features of those games are more or less the same, and as I mentioned, there's plenty of titles that they just gave a new lick of paint or only added minor features to, so that's basically all I was saying: spruce them up, add some new touches like gyro controls and ready. They could DEFINITELY do that with F-Zero, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to come up with something, but it feels like they're sorely overthinking things sometimes, especially in regards to these titles.
Heck, there's SO many references to F-Zero in plenty of games, ever since the Wii U, that it would appear that this particular game is actually still on Nintendo's mind as well. At the very least, it shows that Nintendo is, to some extent, definitely aware that we want it.
@sixrings Yup, absolutely.
@GrailUK Yeah, I know. I just have this impression that THEY feel like they HAVE to, while many, many Nintendo fans would already be happy with a full HD re-imagining of F-Zero GX...
@ThanosReXXX They have done it since day one of them entering the video game industry. Why the heck do you want them to stop now?? And in no way shape or form do I think they are behind the times with gameplay.
@ThanosReXXX They are artists mate. Of course they have to! I don't expect them to, but they do! Let them do what they want to do.
@GrailUK So, that goes solely for Nintendo, then? I can name plenty of examples on Xbox and PlayStation of titles that have shown little to no innovation whatsoever, other than adding better graphics and some added features, and STILL these titles sell by the millions, so that's proof enough for me.
I'd just like Nintendo to see and understand that, and not force themselves to put innovation in every damn thing they do. At that point, it becomes a gimmick exactly because of the self-forced nature of it, instead of true innovation, and that's actually limiting/hamstringing yourself...
@GrailUK As for my behind the times comment: obviously not in gameplay, I totally agree with you there, but with features and services? Most definitely. Lousy online service, needlessly complicated/clunky chat features, and the lousiest of all, are the old game offerings. They should have been offering up the GameCube catalog by now, instead of giving us NES and SNES games for the umpteenth time.
And not only that, they should give us the option to own them, instead of just letting us rent to play...
@ThanosReXXX Better graphics. Why do games with better graphics sell well? Because they are on systems designed to have the best possible graphics. (At least that's what Sony and Microsfot tell folk). The consumer is buying into 'state of the art'. That's the image. No way Nintendo should start touting their graphics as a selling point. Come on lol. Stylistically great, but because, again, they are made with the hardware in mind. If you release a multiplat with better graphics, Switch is going to lose out to PlayStation. 'Best possible experience' is a strong advert.
As for gimmicks? It's always been the foundation of gaming. Was the first steering wheel a gimmick? Even though you spun it around unrealistically, it was still fun to play. Was the hydraulic chair in Space Harrier a gimmick. Light guns? Dance Mats. Gimmicks add gameplay. It's not a dirty word.
@ThanosReXXX And as someone who plays video games (rather bloody well I might add), then for me Game play is the most important thing. I don't even mind playing a green square against a red square on a black background. (That's my childhood lol)
@ThanosReXXX Nice chatting mate ^^. (I must admit, I'm starting to get self conscious lol, so give someone else a chance!) If folk disagree with me, that's fine. It would be boring if we were all the same.
@GrailUK All things add to a point. And mind you: I'm not even remotely a blind graphics you-know-what, but I do expect newer games in a series, or on a newer system to have improved looks.
As for the gimmicks: I'd like to make a distinct difference between the ones that add immersion, like the ones you mentioned, and gimmicks for the sake of it, such as adding "wave your Wii remote like a madman instead of just pressing a button" like so many third party developers did back then.
Obviously, in Nintendo's case, it wasn't THAT bad, but even they themselves weren't completely innocent of such practices, and that's basically what I meant. Artificially hampering/obstructing your own train of thought or development process because of having an incessant need to put something new into a game, or otherwise not deeming it worthy for release, let alone development, would seem highly counter-productive to me.
As for the other parties: regardless of what you or I may think of it, they've shown multiple times that it most definitely works. And personally, I do LOVE Forza Horizon, to name but one hardly changed game series that's still wildly successful...
But agreed. Always nice talking to you, because you're one of the people that realizes that you don't HAVE to agree to still have a decent conversation nonetheless. And that definitely WOULD be boring.
@GrailUK they could have it as a free to play incentive for Switch online like Tetris 99. Then see if it is popular. Then make a full blooded F zero that leapfrogs off it, with all the modes, tracks etc.
The free to play track needs to be big and complex, people fall off, set off mines, are "shunted" by other players etc for eliminations. Like you say you eliminate the players in last 4-5 at a time per lap, have several routes that change each lap, adding or subtracting hazards. F zero is the one Nintendo IP that would lend itself to the genre perfectly, because it is a refined death race mode.
For wins/ranks you would unlock your favourite Racer skins etc or components to alter the look of you craft etc.
I am not even trying to think about it, it just makes total sense.
Anyway, one day maybe someone with have the resources and will to do it.
@FargusPelagius Would make sense to be an online game defo
I know I'm the only one, but:
Uniracers
Stunt Race FX
@SuperToe Stunt race FX would have been a perfect fit for Labo. A more fleshed out take might be interesting though, they could go for the whole, how does it drive on this surface? Then go to town with loads of wacky surface physics, mud, rivers, snow, ice etc all while trying to do stunts. Arcadey fun.
@Arkay I had Cruisin' USA on the 64 and really liked it. Looking back now though, I'm not sure the series was really that great.
