In the same interview with VGC the other week, PlatinumGames' co-founders Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya used the company's upcoming self-published title Project G.G. to seemingly touch on why it's been so quiet about certain other releases.
With these other games - like Bayonetta 3, for example - it all comes down to the publisher's approach. In the case of Bayonetta 3, the publisher is Nintendo. When it's something like Project G.G. though, Kamiya explains how Platinum can essentially share whatever it wants, whenever it wants (without getting in trouble):
"Also, since we’re self-publishing [Project G.G.], there are no publishers to get mad at me this time, so I’ll be sharing things online, putting up screenshots whenever I like…"
When it comes down to other titles (again, let's use Bayonetta 3), it's simply not Platinum's decision to make. In saying this, Inaba notes how the company respects whatever approach other publishers want to take:
"We don’t have that much say over projects that we’re not publishing. And we understand different titles require different approaches, so we respect the publisher’s decisions."
"So if there is a difference between what we want to do with Project G.G. versus what we normally do with our other titles, it’s not really a criticism for those publishers: we respect their approaches. But for this title especially, our approach as a company is that we’re hoping to be more open."
So, in terms of Project G.G., you can expect to see and hear more than you might normally get from Platinum when it's working on a game published by another company.
Could this be the reason why Platinum has been so tight-lipped about Bayonetta 3? Is this why Kamiya keeps on telling fans it's going "very well" all the time? To be fair, in the same interview, he even said a potential 2021 update about the game wasn't really Platinum's "position to say".
What do you make of the above responses? Do you think Platinum has been told by Nintendo to not say a thing about Bayonetta 3 and it can't even tell us that? You know, so Nintendo can eventually do some sort of surprise announcement and break the internet... Share your own thoughts down below.

There’s no point to putting out release dates or even windows right now because nothing is certain these days. I’m cool with it.
Thats another extra year
Sounds like the game is completed and just that Nintendo is undecided about when to release the game? Maybe Nintendo is just spreading its big releases because it doesn't have too many big titles in development. But that's just me reading between the lines lol
As much as Kamiya is a troll on twitter, gotta respect his professional ethic in this regard. Definitely does match Nintendo's style of being tight-lipped until its ready to drop a news bomb on us when things are really close to release.
I knew bayonetta 3 wasn't going to release this year.
@iLikeUrAttitude That could be true, but keep in mind Nintendo's strategy of late: Only revealing games just months before release. Yes, Bayonetta 3 had already been announced, but just barely. If it's really up to Nintendo, maybe there's a chance they pull a Super Mario Maker 2 or an Origami King or a Pikmin 3 Deluxe or an Age of Calamity.
I am calling this one Vaporware for now.
Kamiya: "I cannot talk about games not published by Platinum because I wouldn't want to break an NDA, or do anything that would make our partners funding our games mad at us, for obvious reasons."
Dumb fans: "The game is done and ready to ship!!!"
"I told you it's not coming out in 2021!!!"
Seriously, how do people get through all those logical hoops?
Is it so hard to read what he says and take it at face value? Or have we come to a place where the norm is to never trust anything that was said ever?
It's so sad to see people jump straight to conspiratorial conclusions all the freaking time about everything.
Cowexcrements. I smell development hell.
Ugh..... people... there are countless games out there and I bet you all have an eternal backlog. Leave the man in peace and it will come whenever its ready. Same for Metroid Prime 4.
Platinum Games outputs quality games 95% of the time and its one of the best indie developers out there.
Focus on asking about IPs that have non-existent development news like StarFox, F-Zero, Advance Wars and such.
I don't think we'll see Bayonetta until it's 3 months from launch. As that tends to be how Nintendo Markets stuff.
@clvr Very much agreed. That was exactly what I was thinking.
Well at least there's a reasonable excuse.
Honestly, saying 'It's going smoothly!' once a month and then saying 'Just forget about it for a while' was VERY worrying.
If they were going to be so tight lipped about it then perhaps they shouldn't have announced it so soon.
I can wait, though. Bravely Default II is coming out this month, after all!
To be honest, I don't care too much as to how long it takes. So long as it's good. And to those who are complaining about this, would you rather have another Duke Nukem Forever on your hands?
"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." - Shigeru Miyamoto
Bayonetta 3 would be a perfect game to re-reveal alongside the Nintendo Switch Pro. Any higher powered mid-gen Switch refresh is going to be aimed directly at a more hardcore audience, which is a very similar demographic to Bayonetta and PlatinumGames fans. Would not be surprised to see this, a Zelda BOTW sequel re-reveal, Nintendo Switch Pro announcement and perhaps a Metroid game all in one big presentation
I thought we were told to forget about bayonetta 3? It's just like when you're a kid and during a long trip the kids are asking are we there yet? are we there yet? Then dad turns around and yells. WE'LL GET THERE WHEN WE GET THERE! Now quit whining or I'll turn this car around and nobody gets to see grandma!
That's basically what this is guys. At this point I'll just expect it to arrive on switch 2 LOL!
But that makes sense. Nintendo will publish the title, and Nintendo decides when and what footage of the game is shown (if any).
Bayonetta 3 confirmed xx
@clvr you sound very angry mate you alright? 😂
Like some have said I'm on the side of the game is either done or very very close to being done. However Nintendo being Nintendo they've ordered the game shelved until they say when the time is right. Makes sense to me why Kamiya would act they way he does when constantly asked about Bayonetta 3. It would be very frustrating to put all the work into making a game, be so proud of it, and just dying to let the fans enjoy it but being blocked by the powers that be. In that scenario you're essentially taking the beating from the fanbase when in reality its out of PlatinumGames hands. That would be annoying.
I said it before in a previous post but my prediction is either a Direct or random announcement will drop followed by release within 90 days. Just another day of Nintendo being Nintendo and lets be honest they do it best. Hence all the hysteria in every Nintendo Life article on almost any relatable subject matter.
This goes to emphasize the impact that the phrase "Now In Development" has on games, especially when compared to "Coming Soon!" which unfortunately shouldn't be the case for Metroid Prime 4 or the sequel to Breath of the Wild, because they were both TECHNICALLY announced in 2019, if you count the MP4 restart as a new game announcement.
When the announcement comes, it comes. I would start asking for a release date if they decide to put a "Coming Soon!" trailer rather than a "Now in Development" trailer.
So Nintendo. Figures
Though I understand the consumer frustration, I stand by Platinum, games take time and no reason to overhype fans with a project that’s not near completion. In due time. I think it will be well worth the wait. Just my humble opinion.
I reckon Project GG is the third installment to Viewtiful Joe
Is Nintendo exactly ecstatic about these comments which feel like they are daily. I never hear any other of Nintendos studios talking like this. They sold their one IP to Nintendo and maybe they are done with them after this project. It just all sounds like they are putting all the blame on Nintendo and its hard to see how Nintendo would be OK with that.
One thing I can't wait for is the inevitable about face that is going to occur among many on here. Whenever the game is properly shown and before or after release I know what's going to be the new focus: the technical crap.
Meaning most attention will be all about fps, resolutions docked/undocked, aspect ratios, blah blah blah blah blah. All followed by "if/its not 60 fps so that's a hard pass for me", "at 720p resolution is unacceptable 0/10 canceling preorder", "I'll wait for a sale cause 30 fps is not worth full price!". Won't matter at all how awesome the game is. Just wait its going to happen its a endless loop on here
Yeah cause if they do say something, Nintendo will cancel it! Looking at you Netflix!!
@Kuhang I mean, Breath of the Wild was likely nearly complete up to an entire year or more before it finally came out (obviously done to coincide with the Switch launch), so that wouldn't be unheard of
@TeslaChippie i think that is what it is. Nintendo's business plan to spread out releases and not reveal the release date just yet and put any pressure on themselve. Also to have a bigger impact when Bayonetta 3 is finally shown off because so little detail is out in the wild. So i think Nintendo will wait until they are ready to release. I have a feeling the game is done.
@Kuhang nintendo is spreading because it doesn’t want titles cannibalizing each other’s sales.
And because they need a lineup for the Switch or Switch 2 after all Wii U ports are done.
That’s what I think at least
@Friendly i agree 👍
Simples. If there is a new console somewhere on the horizon, it will need new games. If the console is postponed that sets the game release back.
it is the right way to manage an important title.
When is finished and release date is 100% sure, then start to publish videos and photos.
understood cd project red?
Bayonetta 2 sold less than a million copies on both Wii U and Switch according Wikipedia's list of best-selling games (at least it's not on any of the lists).
I think Nintendo realistically wants people to slowly forget about Bayonetta 3, because the franchise is not selling that well and it would cost a lot money to put it into full production.
Sorry, but I think it will be cancelled late in Switch's cycle (but that's just what I think, you don't have to believe me).
"Development hell". "Vaporware". "Some other idiotic statement".
@Kuhang yeah I'm fine, thanks!
Not sure where you got the anger from, though, I didn't put one emoji or anything.
I get that internet comments are not as clear as we would like, but don't you think I would've put some clear markers if I were that upset?
I personally tend to read messages neutrally if there's no bold, upper case, emojis and such.
I simply wanted to put out some people's inability to comprehend what was a very clear statement properly.
Have a good one 👍🏻
Told ya! Lots of games are on "embargo". Nintendo decides when to share. We just have to wait and see, it can't be helped.
@sixrings really confused why you would think Nintendo would be unhappy with his comments. He is simply stating it's Nintendo's decision to decide when new info can be published on games they are publishing. I really can't see the problem here!
@shgamer this is a joke post right. Bayonetta was never a big seller on any system. Nintendo knew exactly what they was getting when they funded development of 2 and now 3. Bayonetta is selling in line with what people expect. The game sells well enough to cover development costs by the way.
@fafonio except Platinum is not an Indie Developer, it's a 3rd party developer.
Yeah, not worried about it myself, they'll show it when it's good and ready. Never understood the paranoia, its like people forget that games take a few years to make.
@kobashi100 It's not a joke; according Wikipedia's lists of best-selling Switch and Wii U games Bayonetta sold less than 1 million (they're not on either list that shows what games sold at least 1 million copies) copies on each platform.
Nintendo probably thought that Bayonetta 2 (and 1) would sell more when they ported it to Switch. It seems it didn't.
Capcom's Devil May 5 (a direct competitor to the Bayonetta games - the gameplay is pretty much the same - fast action with combos etc.) sold 4.1 million according to Capcom's own page of million selling (platinum selling) games.
Now, I'm not trying to destroy anybody's dreams, but people might have to temper their expectations when it comes to Bayonetta 3.
Games of that caliber costs an awful lot of money to produce these days and needs to sell several million copies to make it financially viable.
As I said in my earlier post you don't have to believe me, but unfortunately I think I'm right.
@djtwenty9 Ummm I think it falls between both ... Indie in other words its independent ... and they are publishing their own titles now without the need of a publisher. So in the purest sense of the word... its an indie. However they also work for certain publishers. In a weird way its both, but we are used to seeing Indie developers as these small studios, when the term indie came from "independent".
@shgamer I know exactly how much Bayonetta 1+ 2 sold. Like I said it sold in line with what people thought it would. The game flopped hard when it was originally released. The series was dead before Nintendo stepped in. You seriously are comparing Bayonetta to DMC. Bayonetta is selling what Nintendo expected it to sell. Talk of it being cancelled is silly! Where are you getting this idea that Bayonetta has to sell several million to be financially viable. lol Nintendo would have never stepped into to fund the game if that was the case. You are tripping dude!
@kobashi100 Believe what you will, but 3 years without as much as a screenshot maybe says something else.
After Super Mario 3D World, what big releases has Nintendo confirmed? Seems like they’d want to have something imminent?
I guess FE: Three Houses was pretty similar. We knew nothing about the details until a few months before it was released in the summer. Nintendo likes to tease way in advance , then give a killer demo a few months before the game is due to release.
@iLikeUrAttitude Where in the article is that said?
@Rygar Don’t we have Bravely Default 2, Monster Hunter Rise and Pokémon Snap all coming within the next 3 months"?
I'm sure I posted this a week or so ago when this site posted completely different quotes to trigger the bedwetters.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/01/fans_should_forget_about_bayonetta_3_for_now_says_platinums_hideki_kamiya#comment6101956
NDA. Can't say anything. Simple as that.
@UmbreonsPapa Its pretty obvious Bayo 3 isn't releasing this year. The developers are so hesitant to tell us anything implying the development is slow.
@iLikeUrAttitude Well, it isn’t pretty obvious seeing as I don’t see anything or anywhere saying as such.
And there’s a reason they’re hesitant to tell us anything. It’s pretty much heavily implied why in the article
No More Heroes III, Metroid Prime 4, SMT V and Bayonetta 3 are all coming at some point. Until we hear otherwise, assume they are coming, and we will learn more when the time is right.
Astral Chain was revealed and then released a few months later.
I expect something similar with Bayonetta 3.
no suprise here, if Nintendo decide that Platinum Games should release Bayonetta 3 on Switch sucessor(you have to acept this since Nintendo is funding the game,) i will be no suprised if Nintendo is holding off Bayonetta 3 to on Switch sucessor along with Metroid Prime 4.
I'm kinda over this game by now.
@MJL switch pro is not happening man time to let that go.
Worst case scenario is that something leaks and Nintendo cancels it like that Netflix story earlier this week.
@Giancarlothomaz Bayonetta is not a system selling game. It's niche material and holding number 3 for switch successor would be completely pointless.
@kobashi100 unless they can’t get it to play properly on the current switch.
Publishers don't like showing development hell. Something isn't right about it taking this long on a system as popular as Switch when 2 sold well and the series held on after a wii u exclusive. Publishers may be quieting the dev teams but I doubt they scaled back efforts or put it temporarily on ice.
@fafonio you know what, you’re right. My backlog is huge but MP4 will jump to the front of the line once it drops.
If I had to guess, Bayonetta 3 will be the last one in the series, and after that, they probably won't be making any exclusives for Nintendo.
@Altina I mean if you have no backlog you probably have so much good stuff to discover still.
In other words "stop annoying me".
@Altina I mean if you hate reviews that much just watch twitch videos or youtube gameplay. I don't tend to take reviews too seriously but if a game has some serious deficiencies or bad programming they can still save you money.
@Altina I recommend splatoon because of graphics and it's normal to play
I'm sorry, Mario, but your annual first party release is in another fiscal year.
We got acnh this year. Can't have 2 big games. That's a -=NEW=- Nintendo rule.
@Giancarlothomaz the Switch is four years old soon and is still selling extremely well. I don't expect a successor until 2023 or 2024. Holding a finished game back for that long doesn't make sense.
Breath of the Wild was an exception. When they finished development it was already clear that the WiiU was a failure. So holding it back for a year to have a system seller for the Switch made sense.
I think Bayonetta 3 was in very early stages of production when they announced it. A development time of three years is pretty standard for this kind of game, especially considering that Platinum games isn't that big and works on multiple projects at the same time. Nintendo will probably stick to their current tactic and show the game off in September and release it in October.
It's Nintendo published. Back when they announced it, they had the Switch to market. The Switch has taken over the entire market, and now they don't even announce their own biggest titles more than a few months before actual release (and who can blame them in a world where Cyberpunk 2077 just happened). So nothing means anything here. I just wait and see, and play what's there already. Plenty in the backlog, already purchased way after release at deeply discounted prices. So I may not be playing the latest, but I am playing the greatest cheaply, and patiently waiting for a steady stream of new entries for my wishlist, and looking for better prices for them, never feeling like having to double dip when a digital game later gets a physical release, because I didn't buy it at digital release anyway.
Nintendo’s games seem good at one thing, finally putting out a great game. Otherwise they don't have a clue!
@shgamer You are not right. Nintendo is not a company that sets unrealistic expectations on the sales for a game like Bayonetta. Platinum's games are not big budget titles.. they are mid-tier. That is why they are still around. If they were making games that cost 50+ million dollars to produce, Nintendo would not finance their titles and they would probably be gone.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows how Nintendo operate. Nor does it mean it’s coming out next month. Nor does it mean it’s cancelled.
@Mince
Yeah they’re really struggling at the minute. They’ve got everything with the Switch wrong. Total disaster.
@sixrings why would they not be able to get the game running on switch. Post makes no sense at all. This isn't a port, platinum are developing the game with the switch specs in mind. Getting the game running isn't an issue at all.
@kobashi100 what if it’s only running at 720 60fps? Technically it’s running. Switch owners bought the original games that way and Pikmin 3 but that’s a big ask for a brand new game.
@KryptoniteKrunch Yeah it doesn't help that people check into sites like this daily multiple times a day hoping for the tiniest little snippet, which isn't going to happen as it's down to Nintendo to dish out the info on this one. They're only frustrating themselves really. Difficult info to digest for such an overemotional crowd.
@electrolite77 completely missed my point well done!
@electrolite77, Wii U comes to mind. Sarcasm a ugly trait, the switch is hardware not a game mate.
Well, like I said in the last article concerning Bayonetta 3, my interest for this game has dropped to near ZERO.
Regardless who's publishing it, the fact they they are side-stepping info on it is... not a promising thing. Especially since it's teaser trailer is now approaching 4 years old and the new buzz is: "When will we see a Switch Pro?"
My hunch? We're not getting Bayonetta 3. We're not getting Metroid Prime 4 either. Those two titles will probably get pushed to whatever Nintendo's next hardware release is.
@Nerdling
But how would that ruin your interest in the game?
I mean, I understand not being straight up "hyped" at this point. ^^
@Mince
Probably should have made the point more clearly then given Nintendo have done well with the Switch Hardware (drift aside), software, marketing etc.
@electrolite77 ok, fair point i suppose but this is a article specially about game releases and publishers.
@Wargoose
A marketing strategy I'm a fan of...as long as the companies don't announce a logo reveal years before release. 🙄
I'd honestly prefer developers and publishers to not reveal games anymore unless they're guaranteed to release in the same year.
@_Dan or a 3d all stars!
@Kang81 I like to know what's on the horizon, and have stuff to look forward to. I don't need constant updates on projects, it's just nice to know cool stuff is on the way. If it wasn't for Bayonetta, Metroid and No More Heroes 3 being announced. There would have been very little reason for me not to trade in my Switch and put the money towards a next gen console.
Especially after last year's game drought. It felt like all that nintendo released last year was Animal Crossing, Mario Remasters, xenoblade remaster and another Musou game. I'm sure they released more than that, but it felt like 2020 lacked a big reveal.
I've got my fingers crossed for a proper direct soon
This was obvious to anyone who could pay attention, but it's nice for them to make it clear for anyone else.
Aaaand people are still reading too much into it/interpreting different meanings entirely. Some things never change.
@countzero well we don't know if Bayonetta 3 is finished, the game may be still in early stage of development(very unlikely)or the game is too ambitous for Switch to handle, so Nintendo is saving the game for Switch sucessor, like Metroid Prime 4.
@kobashi100 holding on Bayonetta 3 on Switch sucessor, maybe because the game is too ambitous for Switch to handle, have you forget about the Switch factor?(Pikmin 3 Deluxe a niche franchise like Bayonetta become the highest/best selling game of the franchise on Switch).
@Giancarlothomaz dude Bayonetta is never becoming a huge seller just like every other single platinum game. And yes pikmin 3 sales on switch in Japan are great but even with them sales just like Bayonetta it is a niche title! Please let's stop this fantasy that Nintendo can turn Bayonetta into a mainstream big seller. Nintendo revived the series to diverse the library and appeal to the small audience who love Bayonetta. Remember that MS passed on Bayonetta because of the lackluster sales. It was a good business move by Nintendo as it's never gonna be a title that loses money. It serves its purpose!
@kobashi100 that was Pikmin 3 Deluxe worldwide sales, if you apply the same trough about Bayonetta 3, cancel Metroid Prime 4, since the Metroid franchise don't sell compared to Mario and Pokémon.
@Giancarlothomaz who said anything about cancelling the game. WTF are you on about. I have no idea what point you are trying to make here. Oh and P3 deluxe sales are worldwide but being carried hugely by the Japanese sales.
@Wargoose
Yeah, I definitely see your side as well. That's how I used to be. It's just so many games get announced now, and it's 3 or more years before they get released.
It's partly my fault. I read a lot of gaming news blogs and websites, and sometimes I read so much about a game I'm excited for that by the time it comes out, I'm no longer interested because it took too long.
@Altina "Live your own life maybe, instead of trying to be like everyone else?"
Do I know you? Cause that's a pretty pointed statement to say that because I defend game reviews I'm just a sheep. Btw youre on a site dedicated to being informed and receiving opinions about games.
@doctorhino - Oh! So you can act like if you would know me, but when I say something that's not even per se directed at you but more a general thing it's suddenly a "Do I know you?"-thing? Interesting.
Keep going... And yes, I'm aware that this is a newssite.And yes, staying informed is important. And I even said that I'm open for opinions. But what has this to do with metacritics and stuff like that, that I'm not interested in? Exactly. Absolutely nothing. You seem to be kinda confused... It also seems to be kind of pointless to keep talking with you, because you twist everything like you see fit, or are just trolling. I bet my bananamilk here is in your head a protein shake on beef basis too.
Big N just waiting for that "Available TODAY in the eShop" announcement....
....back to reality, how amazing was that Bayonetta Demo on the Wii U?!? Don't think I ever got so hyped for a game after playing that (like a million times)....
