Sunsoft, the company behind series like Blaster Master, has announced it will be hosting a new digital event next week on August 18th.
At this event it intends to unveil its plans for titles due out for the remainder of 2022 and also the year ahead. In a PR, Sunsoft general manager, Yuichi Ochi mentioned how the company was "very excited" to finally be able to share its vision for the "rebirth" of Sunsoft - with both new and old fans.
And if you're wondering, yes - "Sunsoft is back", as highlighted in the below video:

Here's some additional PR about Sunsoft's history (via Gematsu):
"SUNSOFT is the video game division of Japanese electronics manufacturer SUNCORPORATION, established in 1971. In October 1978, SUNSOFT began to develop video games in arcades with two titles, Block Challenger and Block Perfect. We had several arcade hits in the early 1980s such as Arabian, Ikki and Kangaroo. On July 25, 1985 we released the first Famicon (NES) title Super Arabian in Japan under the SUNSOFT brand.
"SUNSOFT is known for being a retro-game developer and publisher of such titles as Gimmick!, Blaster Master, Spy Hunter, BATMAN, Tripworld, Ufouria the Saga, and more."
What would you like to see from Sunsoft's upcoming event? If you're not familiar with the company, you can check out some of its work via Hamster's Arcade Archives collection.

Super Spy Hunter 2?
didn't they come back during the Wii? All I can say is "oh no not again".
Given the trajectory of most of these older devs back from the grave, I’m surprised there aren’t NFTs and a vapourware console revival.
@nessisonett you just spoiled one of the reveals
This better be Blaster Master news. I’m such a big fan of Metroid and Castlevania and it’s literally all because of Sunsoft/Blaster Master. I have a Blaster Master tattoo!
Nice. Now let's get Gimmick! for North American gamers.
Oeh, a Looney Tunes collection?
I played the heck out of Looney Tunes: Road Runner. Not because it’s a great game (it’s a good game but not great) but because I only had three games for my SNES for a while and I had to play something. But I have very fond memories that I’d like to relive, please
@Friendly This is what I'm hoping for too. I played a ton of Rabbit Rampage, Marvin Missions and especially Death Valley Rally as a kid. Would love to get them all back on Switch!
Chameleon Twist 1 and 2 remake?! Oh, what a dream that'll be...
I remember the last time Sunsoft "was back," all the way in 2009. The Wii saw some of their games come to VC, and "Blaster Master Overdrive" was a thing. If there was anything else to it beyond that, I don't know what it would've been.
I feel like they've still been around some way or another, mostly in Inti Creates' "Blaster Master Zero" trilogy and a few guest appearances in other games like Penguin Wars. If this really is a ramping up, it'll be interesting to see.
Especially if their logo featured Aero the Acro-Bat again...
@Krambo42 @Friendly oh I remember those games, they were awesome and quite challenging too, Dead Valley Rally and Duck Dodgers were so good, Rabbit Rampage was the only one I didn't finished, that Coyote scene was tough.
I still remember this company publishing a lot of Looney Tunes games back in SNES days.
I legit didn’t even know they still existed!
They had a great reputation during the NES era!
My favourites had to be Batman on MD and GB, Super Fantasy Zone on MD and they did an amazing port of Lemmings for the SFC.
@ChromaticDracula it really is an under-rated series. I really only played and beat all the zero games but never played through the original BM. Hoping its BM related myself.
I love Sunsoft. But I remember them for their 2D wizardry.. is this the Sunsoft that’s coming back for us??
I wonder at this point what remains beyond the name? I can remember playing games as a kid that had Sunsoft’s logo come up, but I can’t actually remember what games they were. Perhaps the licensed games?
Would be nice to get the Aero the Acrobat games on the eShop or NSO.
I, for one, would like to see a new Waku Waku 7, please and thank you.
A Sunsoft Collection would be nice. Don't forget about Journey to Silius, which I played and beat for the first time a few days ago thanks to Nintendo Switch Online.
@mrbogus Yeah. Get the remake out of arcades, and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Why they chose to make it an arcade exclusive is beyond me. I'd even be happier if they just chose to put it on different hardware, but of course, they had to put it on the one machine that I have moral reservations against supporting.
Either way, I'm really looking forward to this. I'd love to see something else along the lines of Blaster Master Zero, either for another franchise, or just a fourth game, though I'd also be happy with a straight collection for Blaster Master (as long as they include the wiiware game. I know it might not have been the best game, but it still doesn't deserve to be lost to the wiiware graveyard.), or just a Sunsoft misc. collection. Either way, its great to see more companies crawl out from their graves. Its weird to be living in a world where both SNK and Sunsoft are back making big games again. I wonder who'll be next, are we somehow going to see Akklaim rise from the grave or something? That'd at least be interesting.
Batman and Batman Return of the Joker would be great just not on nso.
I just want them to compose new music for the Blaster Master Zero series. The original had such a fantastic soundtrack. The Zero games have great gameplay but utterly forgettable music.
Ufouria/Hebereke remakes or new games please!
My favourite NES game ever is Gimmick!. The star-throwing mechanic is so nuanced and unique for an NES game, there's just nothing else like it. And the level design is varied and visually interesting, with some fun secrets and nice graphical touches. It's a short game, but the difficulty makes it tough to master. It really has everything going for it if you love challenging NES platformers. Oh, and the soundtrack is great too!
I'd love to see Gimmick! on the Switch, or better yet a new game...?
At the very least I'd want a Sunsoft classics collection.
@mrbogus @EarthboundBenjy Gimmick! would be amazing! Is it a big enough title to justified a Alex Kid DX style remake with the ability to switch between modern graphics and a nostalgia mode?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-lwoMDdzwI
@MarioBrickLayer It already got a full remake back in 2020, but only in arcades. Here's a quick gameplay link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6d3rKIszdk
@CharlieGirl
My thoughts exactly
@alexybubble
Thanks for linking to this video. I didn't know about this remake, and I'm a little sad it's only an arcade game.
I wasn't even aware that retro pixel platformer games still had any kind of life in the arcades these days.
Batman Megadrive AWESOME!!!
@alexybubble Thanks for posting!! I didn't know about that either!
With that existing, I hope it increases the chances of a Switch release.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch Zero please
This I wasn't expecting to see at all. Sunsoft has been laying in limbo for years, so this awesome to see! I hope they got some new ip's they're gonna bring to us, but if we get Gimmick to come back, I will be the happiest person alive
If we're lucky theyll announce a new Festers Quest
Blaster Master: Blasting Again on PlayStation & Milons Secret Castle on NES.
Robopon Sun remake! It's happening!
@KryptoniteKrunch I have fond memories of Aero the Acrobat. It would be nice to have those games on the Switch.
@Moroboshi876 Journey to Silius and its soundtrack are legendary!! A 2D platformer sequel would be great!
@nessisonett LOL
Fingers crossed for something better!!
@BloodNinja They've continued to exist in Japan, though occasionally opening and closing their international operations.
@Kermit1 Yes, although that was with Victor Ireland's involvement.
@mrbogus Speaking of Gimmick... I really hope there's a port of Exact Mix to consoles & PC. That would be pretty epic.
Holy cow! Sunsoft is a company I barely hear about.
@MrGawain Bat Man, Journey to Silius, Blaster Master (I think) Guardian Legend, and I think they had a racing game. Just to name a few.
C'mon Sunsoft bring back Aero and Zero (notice how their name spell the same just that one starts with A and the other starts with Z).
Finally Aero the Acrobat 3..?
Remind me, were they the ones who made Bloodly Roar?
SUPER GREMLINS 2! LET'S GO!
I loved Blaster Master back on the NES, and they did have a reputation for quality games back then. Right behind Capcom and Konami in my book, like Tecmo and Irem. 👍🏼
I'd die for a modern update of Journey To Silius.
@Tempestryke Guardian Legend is my jam! It was developed by Compile and published by Broderbund though
@HalBailman @bluedogrulez @Moroboshi876 I'm glad people get it about Journey to Silius. I swear I came across the original NES cart on an off chance back in the day, and what a surprise it was. That music has to rank among the best I've heard on the NES. I still run it every so often to jam out. Too bad the Terminator license fell through-- It would have been icing on the cake considering they already had classics such as Batman, Batman: Return of the Joker, and Fester's Quest.
@MeloMan Once you learn what to do it's a less than half hour game, though.
Impressive music, I agree.
Sunsoft also lost a Superman license for the NES, had to change sprites into what would have been Sunman and it got canned anyway. Recently learnt about it. That's sad.
@MeloMan The music is the best in any video game ever. I even made a mix tape of it in the day.
Personally, losing Terminator rights was a blessing (except for less sales $$, of course).
Sunsoft has been killing it with Inti Creates' help. I played through the entirety of Blaster Master Zero 1, 2 and 3 on switch and steam, and they were all so well-done (3 was pretty tough too).
It's good to see that there is still some vocal support for their works on here. I'm cautiously optimistic to what they will be announcing. Hopefully it is something sweet, a revival of a classic or new IP, rather than gatcha or NFT stuff. Maybe a collection or compilation of some of their old NES, Genesis or SNES games? Who knows. We'll find out in a few days.
Batman from the Mega Drive is the only title that would get my money. Those Batmobile & Batwing levels were good!
@MeloMan Guardian Legend is awesome. Journey to Silius is quite possibly one of the best soundtracks on the NES, or at least the most advanced. I'd forgotten they'd done Fester 's Quest, I'm sorry but I think it's a snoozer.
@AstralSoul They did Aero the Acrobat?
@Tempestryke YES!
Aero the Acro-Bat

Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel

Aero the Acro-Bat vs. Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel in Aero the Acro-Bat 1

@Serpenterror Wow, I'm unobservant.
I love Sunsoft! Still the creators of the best Batman game ever!!
@Moroboshi876 Sunsoft's Superman arcade game was awesome though!
Man... if Aero the Acrobat makes it back before Gex, I'm gonna be pissed. We've already seen Bubsy, Kao the Kangaroo, Medievil, Crash, Spyro... hell even Tak and the power of freaking Juju got a remaster. Where's my gecko at!?
If they've managed to re-license their 8 / 16 bit Batman / Superman games for re-release, then my money is clearly their money, and I just don't know it yet.
It'd also be pretty awesome if Inti Creates could get a shot or two with some of their other in-house franchises, too, ala Blaster Master. Maybe an updated Spy Hunter?
@Krambo42
How likely will it be for Sunsoft to release a Looney Tunes compilation? I don’t know how willing WB is currently on licensing their properties.
@Don Beats me. I guess we'll find out. Here's hopin'.
Let’s gooooooo!!!!!!!! Just about 1 hour until hopeful Blaster Master news! Even if it’s not BM, I’ll be very excited to see what one of my favorite game companies is announcing today.
@Grail_Quest Which arcade Superman game? The only arcade Superman game I recall was published by Taito.
@Magrane Whoops! You're right, it WAS Taito! (Love them too!) That was a great Superman game!
