I made a pretty good prediction about its release timing months ago, and the price was within my estimate. Saved very slowly for a looooong time. Any console is a big investment, yeah.
From what I gather the U.K. is a weak market for Nintendo, but the Switch 2 is its biggest launch success by quite a bit. It’s true that many UK gamers have an idea of maturity meaning Call of Duty and FIFA etc are what’s on the gaming menu.
I saw an estimate of 160,000 sold in launch week in the UK, and 200,000 in France (which has a near identical population).
If you pump that up to reflect, say, the US population, at 5x here, you’d be looking at 800,000. It actually sold 1.1m in the USA. So the British interest was 30% less than the American.
All a fluffy way of saying, they could’ve been better but they’re still quite good.
@Lizuka The sheer extent to which you can destroy the environment, and those changes remaining in place, is a very good indicator of the technical performance.
I don’t see it being an Odyssey or a TotK in sales, but maybe like a Splatoon in the long run. Which would still be a big hit.
@Otoemetry I can’t give you exact numbers but I don’t believe for a minute that Switch 2 didn’t perform very well in the U.K. over the last week. It’s had great stock levels too. I’ve seen it go out of stock and back in numerous times in the lead up to launch and since.
I would suggest that primarily handheld players make an effort to leave it docked for maybe a full day.
New devices sometimes need time to ‘find’ their full capacity.
I noted the other day that Mario Kart World on Online Elimination Race (or whatever it’s called) drained my battery by 30% in 45mins. I’d expect it to last 2.5-3hrs with MKW running at a pretty full pelt, based on this.
I have to say, I have not been conscious of Kevin’s Mario performance in MKW at all; I think he’s got completely in to his groove now. I could discern quite a notable difference with Mario Wonder.
If there were ever an advertisement for the (correct) theory that the internet’s famous negativity is a vocal minority of contrary super-‘fans,’ this is it.
Curious to know how many steam decks were sold in the last couple of weeks too. Feels like thousands of people were resolute that their disgust in Switch 2 had sent them to Steam Deck.
@Warioware A bit of both I’d warrant. Backwards compatibility on as massive a scale as the whole Switch library (which I assume was their initial goal) is not easy.
There was a video from the boss of Nvidia released yesterday. Backwards compatibility has been very much considered when designing the Switch 2’s main chip.
I sympathise to a point but I also buy all my games new when I want them. I believe in the value of the games I choose to buy and I have no need to emulate, rip code or whatever else. My life will go on much the same.
I’ve said it several times before. What we want as gamers and how the world works and the legal system are different things. Nintendo are a billionaire company. They like to make money. They make that money by producing fun products that people pay them for. Emulation and modification affects their profit margins and their image.
Finally, the average person doesn’t involve themselves in these matters and will have no concept of any of this. ‘Huh? What’s bricking?’ The public at large won’t realise anything has changed.
I can’t see beyond a quick unveil and launch. Switch was about 5 months from that showcase trailer to launch. I think Switch Successor will be even shorter. March unveil and June launch.
I’m continually astounded that there’s still thousands of people every week deciding that now is the time to get Mario Kart 8. Mulling that one over since 2014 😂
I think it’s fair to say that Nintendo don’t own the whole concept of collecting monsters for battle. I think its also fair to say that Pal World get very close to the bone with a lot of design elements and Nintendo definitely have a case to pursue with patents- just like they’re doing.
Pokémon is their second biggest franchise. They are going to do what they can to protect its unique elements.
@boxyguy I’d like to think they’ve learned some lessons from the ups and downs of their home console record over the years. This is their biggest ever hit and they want to take us all over to the next thing. Lack of backwards compatibility just shouldn’t feel like an option to them if they’re looking for the hardcore to invest in it early.
That’s ok though; we had 7 and a half years of mostly decent to great Switch content. There’s still a few things left to look forward to. Evidently the big boys and girls have moved on to PS5 and XSX/S, and are waiting to release their top tier stuff on ‘the Switch successor’ too.
@Yojimbo Well I know more than I did! Thanks very. Idle curiosity really; I’m not a patient traveller. I’d love to go but it won’t be soon. Maybe the demand will have levelled out a little by my time and it’ll be a more straight forward affair.
I feel like Nintendo stating they’d make a proper announcement ‘within this financial year’ was already solid proof that an actual release this financial year was highly unlikely: very late on at least.
@Mrkittyhead It’s a pretty tenuous distinction at this point, yeah, but I think Emio- The Smiling Man might be the first time such a mature title has come directly from Nintendo’s own development teams and not an acquired second party etc.
Kamiya comes across as quite a small person tbh, has done for years. He’s made some great gaming contributions but he comes across as a bit of a jerk. Time will soon tell whether PlatinumGames will actually miss him.
Everybody ages. It’s down to the individual, their drive and their own health. There’s no reason he shouldn’t continue working but he should be aware if it becomes to his detriment. That is true at any age mind you.
Hiroshi Yamauchi was President of Nintendo until his late 70s and I think he still had a little input in an advisory / board capacity beyond that.
I do like that the Japanese artwork shows more of the characters and gives more of an indication of the narrative, but I just prefer the European version overall. Dark Samus is much more important than the Hunters and the Japanese box diminishes her position. I also prefer the perspective of the European box, looking down at the characters instead of up. In real life that would be a highly unflattering selfie.
@somnambulance I don’t see them ‘wasting’ a big title on Switch at this point, but there could be some solid, B-grade franchise entries. I’m guessing well over half their internal developers have moved on already. I’m also confident Metroid Prime 4 will be cross-platform, if it even comes to Switch now.
@somnambulance I think the last 6 months of the year will be remakes / remasters (Metroid Prime 2, Zelda WW, Zelda TP, Starfox maybe) and 1 or 2 Nintendo originals, and just maybe Silksong. Switch’s time is nearly up but at least they’re doing a better job keeping it going this time round.
@larryisaman Agreed. The mediocrity of the overworlds really drag down all the NMH games. If they did make a NMH 4, I wouldn’t buy it unless this was greatly improved.
@PoundShopOrwell I’d like to assume Nintendo know what they’re doing when it comes to the technical stuff of their hardware. Maybe they’re still impressed with what Shiver achieved with what little the Switch packs under the hood.
I can understand younger people seeing it as less but, as someone approaching middle-age, I think of retro being when I was a kid. We’re back in the ‘90s then.

Hot air, as usual.
Re: Mario Kart World Doesn't Include A 200cc Difficulty Mode
200cc is something I try for its novelty for maybe all of an hour. Amusing but not my bag. 150cc is fine by me.

Re: Talking Point: The Switch 2 Pre-Order Situation Sucks, But Can Nintendo Do Anything About It?
The U.K. has not had a bad situation so far as console pre-orders go.
I checked regularly on Day 1 and got one by the early afternoon. There are retailers right now who have stock: Game Collection, Very and Nintendo.
2 weeks to go and I’d say there have been hundreds of chances so far. No hardware manufacturer has ever done better.
Re: Nintendo Renews A Couple Of Metroid Prime Trademarks
@SirLink I think Echoes is the weak link of the trilogy: the dark world didn’t quite gel for me the same.
Having said that, Echoes is still a 9 out of 10 for me. I just love 1 and 3 majorly.
Re: Talking Point: Are You Ghosting Switch 1 To Save Yourself For Switch 2?
I’ve just been too busy with adult things unfortunately. I still have all of Paper Mario: TTYD to play. I’ll be doing that regardless of Switch 2.

Re: The Switch 2 Won't Have Achievements Or eShop Music
I’ve never really understood achievements either, so I’m with Nintendo on this one.
It feels like an artificial way to keep you playing a game, sometimes beyond the point you’re actually enjoying yourself.
Re: Zelda: BOTW Switch 2 Edition Won't Include The DLC, Nintendo Confirms
Hadn’t thought about it, wouldn’t have assumed it was if I had.
BotW is also a complete experience without it.
Re: "Don't Let Nintendo Ruin The Entire Industry" - Is $80 For Mario Kart World A Bridge Too Far?
If Mario Kart at $80 is enough to RUIN the industry, clearly we didn’t care for it enough.
They also brought it back from the fire decades ago so if anyone can ‘ruin’ it then I guess we’ve had our time 🤷

Coasting their way to Switch 2, #22 isn’t awful considering.

So, this 7 out of 10:-
Is that relative to video games or clocks? Does Nintendo Life now review other clocks too? 😜
