@iLikeUrAttitude I’m not the most technical person when it comes to coding and the like but I always take Nintendo’s hilariously small game sizes as an indication of their expertise. Metroid Prime Remastered is 8gb. NBA2K22 is 52gb.
@Friendly In that same spirit, Retro themselves act as a support studio for Nintendo at times. Utilising the best assets available is indeed part of being a top developer 😊
To be honest, no. Nintendo need to get better at harnessing their old games. GCN should be included too. I get that they remaster some GCN titles and release them as full retail but they could just withhold them frankly. They’ve always been choosey with what titles they release to us anyway.
@D_Munk It definitely can; Nintendo are masterful at achieving a lot with relatively modest specs. I hope I’m wrong and they manage to put out a MP4 sooner rather than later. Maybe the silence is a good thing and Retro are just avoiding the rumour circuit, given the fashion in which the project passed on to them.
@Souflee @arabiansanchez I’m a huge Metroid Prime fan but honestly, 4 is looking like a bit of a pipe dream at the moment. I have a completely unfounded theory that it might be Nintendo’s cross-gen release this time, ala Twilight Princess (GCN / Wii) and Breath of the Wild (Wii U / Switch). Alternatively, maybe it skips Switch entirely.
More than any other Nintendo title, Prime WAS known for its graphics as much as its stellar gameplay. I’m wondering if Retro have maybe exceeded the Switch’s abilities in trying to make something that lives up to the old Trilogy.
@Anti-Matter Fancy giving some insight in to what these other games are you’re so fascinated by? You’re not really saying anything by just paying lip service to the article then saying ‘I like other types of games’. Bully for you.
@BTB20 What I meant was they are a sizeable software developer. I was responding to the notion that they wouldn’t have the capacity to develop and put out a AAA title with some graphical prowess.
It is also true that Nintendo do own some smaller studios under their overall umbrella, yes.
@Dev9417 Splatoon 2 has sold 13.3m as of March 31 2022. Splatoon 3 has sold 10.13m as of December 31 2022. They are #14 and #17 in Switch’s all time best sellers.
@Giancarlothomaz I’d say very slowly indeed. They’ll have Totk and a few notable B tier games this year, and some remasters. Not expecting any reveal for the successor till 2024.
I personally think they’ll aim for late 2024 with a new console. They won’t officially reveal it until the eleventh hour, just like Switch. That was 5 months from the unveil trailer to release.
The current hardware still has a good 18 months to shift stock without anything ‘officially’ taking its place.
@johnvboy They haven’t officially released the latest numbers but I’ve no doubt it’s very comfortably #3 by now. Even a year ago I wouldn’t have said so but, given Nintendo seem to believe they’ll still sell another 20m consoles in 2023, there’s a little bit of a chance it’ll even challenge DS and PS2 come mid 2024.
@EriXz I agree but I don’t think it’ll miss the top 2 by all that much. They projected 19m units sold for the current financial year. Say they manage even 25m in the next 2 years, they’d be just a good Black Friday / Xmas short.
@Dezzy70 Good thought. I hope so. I don’t think Nintendo will have reason to change their cartridges. By my understanding the size can be increased quite a bit more, and I assume they’ve become cheaper to manufacture.
Having the whole Switch library compatible would actually be a great way to keep some profit coming from the old machine.
@Dezzy70 I don’t think Nintendo will care about that. DS is within touching distance of PS2; they’ve got nothing to prove in that regard.
In saying that, I do hope Switch is still supported when its successor launches. Historically, both Sony and XBox are much better at making the transition less harsh. It would make sense to keep Switch ticking over because there’ll be bigger money to be made initially than the early days of its successor.
I took Splatoon 3 as a statement of intent. Typically they actively support the Splatoon games for 18 months or something? That would be March 2024. Switch would be very comfortably #3 of all time by then to the tune of 10s of millions of units, but probably still a good 20-something million behind DS and PS2.
@Dezzy70 At this point in the Switch’s lifespan (guessing it’s successor is a couple of years away), I’d save the next ‘proper’ Mario and MK9 for Switch 2’s launch year.
EDIT: unless of course Nintendo get in to that cross-generation releases game, with pretty improvements for the new console.
I’m actually happy for him. There were stories of him having issues with his arms and being hooked up to IVs and just carrying on working. He’s compromised his health to keep churning out products. He should prioritise himself now.
If they’d just release Metroid Prime Trilogy and the Zelda WW and TP HD ports, Switch has essentially made both Wii and Wii U redundant for me. The mix of great new titles and the breadth of its choice ports really does feel like it’s almost bookending Nintendo’s entire 3D era.
At worst I think Switch is Nintendo’s best home console in 25 years. At best, perhaps its greatest ever hardware, period.
My year mostly consisted of Metroid Dread, Bayonetta 3 and Skyward Sword HD. A few more were peppered throughout with 5 hours or so: Nintendo Switch Sports, Cuphead DLC, Bowser’s Fury.
I think Bayonetta 3 will be more successful now. She’s unwittingly created a wonderful hoopla around it. All coverage is further brand recognition, which is good for the game. It helps that her statements just don’t add up too.
I’m actually a little concerned about her. I question why she’s picked this fight, thinks she can back-peddle and no one will notice, and also why doesn’t she take any other jobs apart from Bayonetta? According to IMDB she hasn’t taken another part since 2011. I hope she’s generally okay basically.
Going against the grain here maybe but I don’t really believe her. Reasons:-
1) I don’t believe for a second Jennifer Hale has settled for the sort of money Hellena is claiming was offered to her.
2) As for the franchise raising $450m in revenue? Nope. I love Bayonetta but it’s a minor, pretty niche hit. Each game sold about 1m copies. I also don’t see Bayonetta merchandise everywhere to supplement the game profits.
3) Her rant about the new actress not being able to call herself Bayonetta, and the analogy concerning Eva Green? Unhinged.
I’m reaching here but my own theory is she wasn’t picked up for some other reason, likely scheduling, and she’s hurt because Platinum didn’t work harder to retain her.
Well Mario is an Italian-American from Brooklyn. I am very fond of Mario’s Wahoo / it’s-a-me voice but errr… yeah, this is probably more the way to go for a movie.
As for the actual performance, barely heard any of it yet. I’ll wait and see.
Whatever comes after Switch, Nintendo really should take this existing library with them and pick up the pace with future releases. It’s a real money spinner; they just seem to lack the resolve to set it up properly and monetise it to its full potential.
Metroid Prime still holds up brilliantly, played the Trilogy on Wii U download lately. I’m hoping the Prime 1 Remastered rumour is true and we get a short window from reveal to release.
In fact, I’d let Nintendo fleece me for all 3 in the run up to Metroid Prime 4.
@NintendoEternity I’d say it’s almost a guarantee. I think there’s a chance it’ll take down DS and PS2 in the end too, even with inevitably slowing momentum beyond this financial year.
@BomTomdabil Nintendo have owned Monolith for 15 years now. They assist on Zelda titles. If Xenoblade 3 is ready to go a little earlier, we can expect it to be of the required standard for a Nintendo title. They won’t cut corners.
Completely unnecessary. If you’ve got yourself a Switch for 4k graphics you’ve clearly not got the memo. Also, this isn’t really going to be 4k in the same way that PS5 and XBX are, is it? The games weren’t developed to utilise this.
I’m weirdly reassured by the promptness of this announcement? They must be confident in where they are in the process and have a clear understanding of what still needs done.
I could be wrong but I feel this is really early for them to hold up their hands and say ‘We will need a few more months’.
Breath of Duality barely makes sense. Breath of the Wild worked because it conveyed the sprawling landscape, the wind and elements, the general life within the open world etc. What is Breath of Duality meant to make me think of?
I personally don’t think there’s likely to be any truth to this one.
It’s only been 3 years since it was announced that Metroid Prime 4 was being restarted with Retro Studios. They’ve also hired quite a lot of people since then so clearly they weren’t operating at full scale straight away on this. It feels really long since the initial announcement in 2017-ish but the truth is Retro’s project is well within a reasonable development cycle at the moment.

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of December 2022
@BTB20 The attach rate for MK8D is insane. 52million copies vs 122m Switch consoles. Let’s be generous and call it nearly half.
Animal Crossing seems to have run out of steam now but at over 40m sales that’s quite bonkers.
Smash Ultimate just crossed 30m too and I’ve no doubt BotW will soon follow as hype builds for TotK.
Switch really has had some monster hits.
