I really enjoyed the first 3 of the latest Planet of the Apes reboot. I’m reassured that Wes Ball is the director behind the new one: equally well received.
I hadn’t been convinced by his past gigs but the Apes movies have set pieces on the level I’d hope for in a Zelda movie.
If I could finish and enjoy Banjo-Tooie back in the day, I can live with a smooth 30fps ‘downgrade’ to replay this bad boy with a lovely new coat of paint.
@Axecon I think TotK sales were just massively front loaded. I suspect it’ll finish a couple of million above its current official figures (20m as of Dec 31). A comfortable #8 on the Switch all-time list, behind MK8D, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, BotW, Mario Odyssey, Sword and Shield, and Scarlet and Violet.
Not bad competition to fall short of, considering they’ve all been out for years.
@UltimateOtaku91 There’s no reason Nintendo can’t play it relatively safe AND still offer something new.
I agree that they’d be bonkers to mess with their core form factor too much this time around. They need to make it welcoming for their millions of current users. A bit more power, a REALLY up-to-date and modern controller, much better online, a new optional hardware hook, and a smooth transfer of data, games etc from Switch. That would be enough for me.
Contractors can indeed be temporary. It’s possible Nintendo are dressing this up a little but it’s not comparable to what’s been happening at other big firms. I imagine the short-term gigs are drying up a bit temporarily due to the transition from Switch to Switch 2.
I’m no expert in the biz but if I were at Nintendo, and there’s an upcoming new console and nothing revealed as of yet? I’d be tempted to lock that down and keep testing completely in-house.
Side point: who is Gach and why do we listen to them?
I often wonder what it takes to make some people happy, or if it’s even possible. TotK is a technical marvel and it’s really bloody fun. Anybody who’s disappointed by it compared to BotW or says it’s ’just DLC’ is simply punishing it for being a direct sequel or can’t conceive of the staggering work and craft on show.
Just the game tarted up a bit, with sensible adjustments to control schemes and gameplay if necessary. Obviously not against extras but the game itself remains the absolute priority.
The Mario Bros movie was a piece of fluff; it was cute and full of references for old geeks, and it had a very lightweight story. Perhaps a second one will have room for a little more narrative. A lot of the world building has already been established now.
I can’t see past TotK for a specific ‘best design’ award. The amount of coding, testing, and general skill, hours and creative insight, needed to make all of those abilities co-exist successfully is impressive.
If I don’t have a physical cart then I’m basically renting. Whether it’s 5 years, 10 years, 20 years… eventually they’ll pull the plug and the reality will hit that it was never actually mine.
@Faucet In fairness to Nintendo, Rare had their time. Their record under XBox is quite thin next to their Nintendo days. We’re not clambering for their new stuff.
5. A lot of it was very niche or just plain dull looking to me. I’m sure others saw it differently.
Out with World of Goo 2 and the Rare games on NSO, I didn’t really care for it. I accept that Epic Mickey, Monkey Ball, and Endless Ocean have their fans.
@sanderev I accept it’s not a remake per se but it’s also much more than a lick of paint. I’d also say it didn’t NEED to be a full remake because the original was just that damn good.
@Atomic77 Fascinated what could lead you to this belief. Of course Nintendo have new hardware coming. They like money. They just need to be careful how they handle the transition from Switch to its successor. I’m hoping it’ll be a somewhat ‘soft launch;’ the next big thing doesn’t have to replace Switch immediately. They can co-exist for a while. PlayStation have done it that way for decades already.
I predicted back in the middle of last year that Switch would sell about 143m before Switch 2, assuming they had no intention to support it concurrently.
Can safely say my guess is looking a tad conservative now. Nintendo have a real puzzle to solve here. Their stock is riding high, sales are still strong. Announcing Switch 2 too suddenly will have an adverse effect on those sales in the short-medium term and that all-time-high stock will fall.
First time ever but I’m thinking we might get a very sudden reveal and release: as in just a few months notice.
Nintendo would never admit it but they’ll want to get within touching distance (or maybe even surpass) DS and PS2 globally.
I’m tempted to say Ōkami but not sure they’d do it justice. It was such a unique title and I don’t think the people involved have much to do with Capcom anymore?
@jedgamesguy I think we call that ‘front loaded’. Hugely so.
If this were an earlier point in the Switch’s life it would pick up consistent sales from here on in, easily hitting 25m+ and we’d be having a different reaction across the board.
There’s no doubt it’ll take down Mario Party soon; being the seventh best selling game on the console, with heavy hitters that have been out for years in comparison, is undoubtedly a big hit.
Hardware Sales for the last week of January (followed by lifetime sales)
PlayStation 5 – 41,188 (4,447,566) Switch OLED Model – 33,288 (6,595,453) PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 8,757 (702,771) Switch Lite – 8,991 (5,721,761) Switch – 4,156 (19,710,724) Xbox Series X – 2,158 (249,481) PlayStation 4 – 655 (7,917,910) Xbox Series S – 1,747 (298,280) New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 15 (1,192,801)
Some wacky sales claims in here. Switch looks extremely likely to sell another million in Japan. Easily.
Setting myself up for another fall with this mythical game, but I feel they must be quite far along with it now, especially with this latest ‘news’. My hope is MP2 gets a shadow drop imminently, then MP3 comes at the end of the year with an attached release window for MP4 in 2025- maybe as a cross-gen title or maybe as a Switch 2 exclusive.
People like him need to shut up. The day I don’t have the option of owning a game I buy is the day I leave a company, or this whole industry, behind. We’re entitled to own something we’ve chosen to pay for.
Maybe it’s an age thing. I’m… not quite ‘young’ anymore. I know when I’m finished with a game and that its appeal is spent. I’m better at letting go of them. Free up the space and put them towards something new on occasion.
It depends how big the games come in but in this day and age? 1TB would be on the safe side. I don’t expect they’ll be memory hogs like PS5 stuff but they won’t be small.
I’d be happy enough with 500GB if the expansion options are affordable.
@Znake I’d love a Switch 2 that’s basically a portable PS5 but I think that might be a little bit of a stretch honestly: Nintendo have goals concerning price, battery life and environmental effect when they make and release a new console.
I absolutely agree with you that the gap is widening. I’m astonished that Arkham Knight got out in its current state. I’ll be very surprised if Switch 2 isn’t revealed by the start of next financial year and out by Q3.
It’d be great to join in the GTA party but Nintendo hasn’t often been a console of choice, for several reasons. I’d love GTA VI on Switch 2, but neither of them really need each other at this point per se.
Unless they are willing to do a platform exclusive there’s absolutely no chance. Nintendo aren’t having Mario on a PlayStation under any circumstances.
@Woodyshoe It might due to the fact that Nintendo fund the whole thing. They seem happy to have Bayonetta as a sort of prestige title / exclusive. It doesn’t sell really big but it’s got a loyal audience and offers something different for them.

Re: Poll: So, What Are Your First Impressions Of LEGO's Zelda 'Great Deku Tree' Set?
@arabiansanchez I take back the comment on its size. 2500 pieces? Clearly the pics aren’t quite giving me the idea of its true scale.
Re: Poll: So, What Are Your First Impressions Of LEGO's Zelda 'Great Deku Tree' Set?
LEGO is generally over priced for what it is but this doesn’t even seem like a particularly big set for such a price?
I’m not a LEGO person but it smacks a bit of greed to me.

@russell-marlow Long time since I played TTYD. What would they potentially censor nowadays?

As extraordinary as it sounds I didn’t really remember the thing, just a very vague familiarity when it popped up again in Pikmin 4.

I’m all for variety and I think it’ll be a minor hit; there’s an audience for it. I’m not part of that audience.

Re: Talking Point: If 'Switch 2' Isn't Coming Until 2025, What's Nintendo Got Up Its Sleeve This Year?
