Re: Soapbox: It's Time To Normalise Giving Up On Games Early

Nice piece. I agree. If you're not having fun anymore, just move on.

Your bit about not being able to skip parts of videogames like you can with movies or books is intriguing tho. Would it be so bad if the games of the future allow players to skip to any section of the game at will? Kind of like the rewind feature that's on the SNES Mini... but in reverse!

Re: Video: Here's Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Crash Bandicoot 4 On Switch

Yodalovesu

Digital Foundry is a scourge on this industry. Human eyes are perfectly capable of determining if a game is attractive or not. DF, on the other hand, encourages people to judge how attractive something is based on a list of numbers and tech jargon.

If it looks good to you, play it and enjoy it. You'll likely never be concerned about any of these things that DF brings to your attention. If it doesn't look good to you, you don't need a third party to tell you that anyway

Re: Soapbox: I'm Tired Of Ports And Remakes - Where Are All Nintendo's New Ideas?

Yodalovesu

I love the last sentence. It captures exactly why the indie scene has become my new hangout for all things gaming. "The weird and the wonderful" are there for sure. But also the original, the honest, the raw, the quiet, the creative, the personal, the flawed, the restrained, the pure genius... the Indie scene is the most likely place to find any of things in video games these days

Re: Video: Ten 3DS Exclusives That Could Be Better On Nintendo Switch

@BloodNinja hey man, you're absolutely right. If we could have more games available on the Switch that would be pure awesomeness. Ideally, we would have access to as many old games as possible on the console. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that's actually opposed to the idea of getting more games on the system.

The problem is that there's a growing suspicion among some fans that the ability to port old games to Switch is being abused by Nintendo to save costs and maximize profits. The suspicion is that old games are not only being repackaged as "new" games, but they are even replacing actual new development. And there's a little bit of data to support that. Nintendolife even ran an article showing that Nintendo's output since the Switch started has been lower than with the Wii U when you account for these ports.

Now that those Wii U ports are finally drying up, there is a bit of hope but also anxious uncertainty... Will Nintendo finally devote all their efforts to new development, or will they reach even further into their backlog to continue re-selling us old games at full price, while simultaneously being selective and stingy with the games they decide to give us access to? With Skyward Sword and Miitopia being recently announced, it seems like the former could actually be the answer. That's not a future for the Switch or for Nintendo that I want to support, and I think there's lots of others that feel the same way

Re: Review: Blue Fire - A Superb Action-Platformer That Puts Gameplay First

Yodalovesu

Finished with 99% completion recently and loved every second of my twenty-ish hours with it. This is my favorite indie of the last two years. If it looks interesting to you, give it a try!

@sketchturner after finishing the game, I'm pretty sure the range of scores is because of the high old school challenge (no checkpoints on long platforming sequences) and lack of hand holding (no map and no objective markers). Some people will enjoy that and others will be driven absolutely mad by it. Some of the void stages are HARD. Like "put the controller down and give it another try tomorrow" hard

Re: Rumour: Zelda's 35th Anniversary Will See The Return Of Wind Waker And Twilight Princess

Yodalovesu

Nintendo is squandering the Switch's potential just to make a quick buck and to maximize their profits.

Sure, they're a business and gotta make money, but I worry a little for their long-term viability as a company with strong brand loyalty if they keep up this trend of low-effort / high-cost ports, remasters, and half-sequels.

At least in my world that's been the case, but maybe not for others. In just three years time, I've gone from being a huge Nintendo devotee to just kinda indifferent to most of their output

Re: UK Charts: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Launch Sales Are 190% More Than The Wii U Version

Yodalovesu

I'm still wondering what Nintendo's employees have been doing all this time? Surely it doesn't take as many people or as much time to port old games from a weaker console. Then also consider that 3DS development is no longer a thing, presumably freeing up even more people to focus on Switch. Nintendo should hypothetically be capable of pumping out new games at an unheard of pace

Re: Video: Immortals Fenyx Rising - Switch VS PlayStation 5 Graphical Comparison

Yodalovesu

Nintendolife, did Ubisoft provide the Switch v PS5 video? Or did they request that you run a story comparing the game to the PS5 version? Because you're not the only site to do this, and it seems like such an odd comparison to make. I'm not sure I see what a Nintendo-focused website has to gain by showing its readers how much worse a Switch version of a game looks compared to a version that is running on a vastly more powerful console

Re: Review: The Last Campfire - A Refreshingly Freeform Puzzle Adventure Packed With Ideas

Yodalovesu

The story was my favorite part of the game, for any who are interested. The narration during puzzles can be extremely insightful and poignant. Narration only comes when you have made a correct move towards solving the puzzle, as well, so it'll never speak when you're just wandering looking for a solution.

Also for any concerned about the "performance issues" mentioned in the comments, it's a total non-issue. Stuttering does happen when transitioning from the overworld to the puzzle maps, but you don't have any control over your character in those moments and neither is there any story happening. It's basically a seconds-long loading screen in disguise. And seeing how the game never needs to load at any other moment when exploring around, I think it's a pretty good tradeoff
