The very first review of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has now been published by Japanese publication, Famitsu. The verdict arrives just over a week ahead of the game's official release.
Famitsu's scoring system has four different reviewers rate the game out of ten; in this case, the magazine's reviewers opted for scores of nine, nine, eight, and ten, resulting in an overall score of 36/40 (thanks, Ryokutya2089 / VGC).
As noted by VGC, Famitsu awarded the original Wii U version of Super Mario 3D World a score of 38/40, a slightly higher score than the publication has given to the new Switch game. The review reportedly calls the Bowser's Fury mode “a lot of fun”, while also praising the new mode's challenge and replayability and the online functionally offered in the base game.
We'll have our very own review of the game for you a little nearer to the game's release, so make sure to stay tuned to read our thoughts. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury launches exclusively on Switch on 12th February – and you can pre-order it now.

I'm 100% waiting on hearing about Bowser's Fury's length. If it's a full game mode with 10 hours (or more) content, I'm totally in. Having put hundreds of hours in the original, I won't be picking this up if BF is just a short add on stage.
Everytime i see bowsers fury my brain says bowsers furry. Help
@Muddy_4_Ever I recall seeing something that said it’s around 2-3 hours
@Muddy_4_Ever Take a look at the replies in some of the reviews on other sites, they let us know the game was about 3-5 hours long.
Hope that helps.
@Muddy_4_Ever From what I've read its supposedly 3 hours to beat and 6 hours to 100%.
It feels like most of their reviews end up being 36/40. Probably because 9/10 means very good but not perfect and videogames scores are meaningless below 7/10
@Muddy_4_Ever
Already leaked 3 hours to beat, 6 to 100%
Still on the fence about this one. While SM3DW on its own is an excellent game, I played it to death on the Wii U. Unless Bowser's Fury is a must-have, I probably won't double dip.
Damn, so it's not as good as Yoshi's Crafted World (Famitsu 37/40) and only mildly better than Sonic Forces (Famitsu 35/40) 😉
@Peteykins If anyone has a review archive, validate against their review for Amiibo Festival. Everyone says that game was a turd.
Sorry if this is off-topic, but I hate how with video game review scores, people think that anything under an 8 is abysmal.
@Peteykins sure...when Nintendo makes a bad game hahaha
Well of course it was going to get a great review because the game is fantastic, it was one of the best Wii U games in my opinion and the new content added for the Switch looks equally fantastic.
I have fond memories of the Wii U original's release. The Xbox One came out the same day and I lined up at EB Games during the midnight launch event. Went up to the counter and asked for Super Mario 3D World hahaha! I'm looking forward to double dipping~
@Peteykins Amiibo Festival is genuinely one of the worst video games I've ever played. There's no way anyone giving it an 8/10 is reviewing it legitimately, yet alone four people.
The original release of 3D World would be about a 7/10 for me. I thought it was really fun as a multiplayer game but mediocre as a single player game so good but not great overall.
@Muddy_4_Ever it’s 3-6 hours. 3 hours to finish, 6 hours to complete.
Edit: But you’ve probably already seen the 100 comments of others that I’m just seeing now
I’ve played the Wii U version and I’m going to wait for a price drop. Just wish I could buy bowsers fury on it’s own.
Famitsu are one of the worst examples of score inflation in video game reviews. Don't think I've ever seen a relevant game get less than 32/40 (4 8/10s).
@Peteykins case in point
@GrailUK Love this! Great reply, 36/40 is a very nice score, can’t wait for this one..
@C-Olimar how are you able to judge that the numbers are inflated?
@Peteykins Sounds about right. They gave Mario Party 10 a 33/40 (8/8/8/9) too.
They love Nintendo developed games, always have and they never score poorly no matter what.
In case anyone's interested, Famitsu also gave Sonic 06, a barely functional game, 30/40. On average, they thought the game was a 7.5/10.
@Friendly seems a general trend in the industry. I've not got the numbers to back it up, so I apologise for that. It just seems to me that every AAA game gets an 8/10 minimum score, in many cases undeservedly.
IGN in particular seem incapable of giving a game below a score of 9.
I do think people here are right that the original game’s better in multiplayer. But doesn’t the fact that we now have online multiplayer elevate this rerelease a score point? I only played with a full set of people once & it was incredibly fun.
@ObeseChihuahua2 I'll bite: please find me one legit example of someone saying 7/10 = abysmal.
Just because people don't want to spend their time and money on a 7/10 game, that does not equate to saying it means it's abysmal. That's just a tired misconception.
@Mips Hopefully the online multiplayer actually runs well and isn't a Super Mario Maker 2 situation. Nothing will beat sitting in the same room with a group of friends and playing through the game together locally though but I suppose that's a little hard for most people at the moment so gotta take what you can get.
I know Bowsers Fury is pretty short but to be fair this is better than I'd hoped for because honestly I thought that Nintendo was just gonna add a new character slap a deluxe at the end of the title I mean sure 2-3 hours ain't that great but to be fair while Mario Kart just brought over DLC and Pikmin added a chapter plus Bayonetta 2 didn't even change adding a whole new story mode even if it's under 5 hours is pretty impressive
@BenAV I'm waiting to see how the matchmaking works for multiplayer and if it has voice support (even if it is through the stupid app).
Nintendo doesn't like to make online connectivity easy.
@C-Olimar Cyberpunk got a 4/10.
But yeah, if the game runs ok and playable, it usually at least gets a 6/10. Does that mean it’s good? Usually no...
Indeed industry standards. The outlets aren’t very critical anymore, since that could mean them losing their license or allowance to receive games early.
A bit the same as being called ‘fake news’, if you think about it. Just anxiety of screwing up.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Pretty sure it's going to be just with friends with no matchmaking outside of that. Dunno about voice chat but there's always Discord and the like I guess which is probably better than the app anyway.
Would a full game of Bowser's Fury not be better? If I'm honest, I've no interest in the main title.
I'm guessing famitsu gets special embargo treatment with Nintendo. Forgive me if I'm late to the party noticing.
@BenAV True, local is always best for me. Apparently N’s got new servers tho - I suppose it depends if the game is peer to peer or not?
Two nines and a ten.. I’ll take that. That’s right, I’m ignoring the eight. As if anyone could score 3D World lower than a nine. Must’ve been a typo! 😉
They rated Sonic forces higher than Sonic 06?! Man I know Sonic 06 is bad but forces is 10 times worse
Totally deserved. The WiiU game is absolutely amazing, and the new content is great. So...
Yeah, I usually don't trust Famitsu. I pre-ordered the game after the trailer last month, I didn't need convincing.
@BenAV seriously? That will be a hard pass from me then, was looking forward to this but there's no point if there's no drop in or out matchmaking. When will Nintendo actually get online right
I am 100% living for this game right now, roll on release day.
@FroZtedFlakerZz They rated Sonic Forces higher than Sonic Mania too (Sonic Mania got 32/40)
@Mr-Fuggles777 I don't know that for 100% sure but it's what it sounded like from the limited info I've heard. I think it does make sense though so I'm not surprised. Dropping in and out of random strangers' games mid-way through sounds kinda awkward and not very fun.
@BenAV And would probably give it horrible Internet like Mario Maker 2.
@Clyde_Radcliffe you can’t always ever bring up that same f*ck up of famitsu.
The reviewers are very different people. And opinion remains an opinion.
Truly adore this game on my beloved WiiU (yes...I was the one other WiiU owner!) I still own it and play it but preordered on day 1 of announcement, even before Bowsers Fury details, just for the portability of it.
Truly outstanding game, not QUITE as amazing as Odyssey..but still such a pleasing game, I didn't stop smiling the whole time playing it (except the evil Champions Road level...which is the hardest level I have EVER played!)
Come on nintendo, make some new games.
literally cant wait for the online multiplayer and to see how bowsers fury ends! gonna play through odyssey, then this!
@Muddy_4_Ever I think it’s been widely reported that it’s not anywhere near 10 hours of gameplay. However, what is there is reportedly a lot of fun. I’d say pick it up on a sale for $40 to offset the fact that you owned it on WiiU.
Cool. I’m sure this will sell a lot. I’m not sure what my next Nintendo first party game will be. As of what has been revealed to release so far this year nothing is peaking my interest.
@Mips Agreed. I think the addition of online multiplayer (which is mind boggling that it wasn’t included in the original WiiU release) instantly elevates it for me and justifies a double dip. It’ll be the first time I play it multiplayer and I’m really excited about that, not to even mention the Bowser addition.
Pre-ordered it a few days ago. Will be a little Valentine's Day present for the kids. (Wink, Wink)
@Peteykins Thanks for doing the legwork.
Guys, we can officially stop caring about Famitsu reviews.
@Ks123 nice one - I’m not too bothered about randoms & none of my friends play Nintendo games. Perhaps there’ll be some people on here that want to play.
@ObeseChihuahua2 I've seen people in here crying about games and refusing to buy them because they're "only a 9".
For people who've never played it, this site scored the original a 10: https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/wiiu/super_mario_3d_world - but I suppose they're wrong too.
Famitsu's review scale for major releases is 36 to 40. I used to put a lot of stock in their scores back in the N64 era, now I see that they are little different than much of the American gaming press.
@Peteykins "Kind of supports my thesis that Famitsu is so beholden to Nintendo that they absolutely will not give a first-party game a bad review. It's like it's a policy."
Which is also probably why Famitsu get to be the first to publish their review.
For anyone wondering here's a source to Famitsu quadruple 8's for Amiibo Festival (32/40)
https://www.gematsu.com/2015/11/famitsu-review-scores-issue-1407
That said 3D World on the Wii U is one of the greatest multiplayer games I've played in a very long time. Make sure to play it with people at more or less the same level.
Have pre-ordered already as I know I'm in for a good time with 3D World.
@Ks123 The one thing that may pull me back is online multi-player (in addition to BF). Fighting people online for the crown seems like it would be a good time. I mostly focused on cooperative play on the Wii U version couch co-op. But competitive online multi-player would be a blast on this one.
@Muddy_4_Ever Hey man you probably haven't heard so Bowser's Fury is between 3 to 6 hours.
@p0cketpingp0ng It can't be easier than Super Mario Bros 2 USA and New Super Mario Bros U surely? 😮
Famitsu has the worst reviews. They're like five words long and tell you nothing about the game
@Yodalovesu Agreed. They're like the descriptions you get on the back of a game box.
@ObeseChihuahua2 I don’t think people think that under an eight is abysmal but now with so many games out and people complaining about infinite backlogs people wonder if something is worth their time if it’s under an eight. Depending on how much free time you have you might think it’s not. And if you have all the time in the world then sure why not.
@Mr-Fuggles777 according to Nintendo’s new commercials voice chat is done best when used with Skype or zoom on a laptop.
@sixrings I get your point, but you might be missing out on a great game if you judge something as terrible just because it is a 6 or 7.
I want to know the length of bowsers fury.
.. and that sounds wrong
@sixrings that's great If you have the persons contact details. Not so good when you are playing with strangers.
Also zoom or Skype isnt ideal when you normally game sprawled out naked on the sofa eating snacks
@CBordo IGN Sonic Forces review
"Verdict: On top of the joy of creating and playing as your own character, there’s a lot of goofy charm that makes Sonic Forces hard to be too disappointed with. The graphics are colorful and engaging, and the music is a pumping backdrop for extreme team-ups, super-speed cinematics, and lots of ruminations on the power of friendship. There are some really fun levels in the mix, too, and surprisingly strong boss fights make for some unexpected highlights. But Sonic Forces doesn’t build on its handful of good ideas as much as it should, and it screeches to a halt just as it seems to hit its stride.
6.9/10
Your example doesn't support your point IMO. Seems like a balanced verdict that justifies a 6.9.
Please note the lack of the word 'abysmal'.
@Mr-Fuggles777 maybe it’ll open up your zoom relationship.
@Peteykins They only review good games probably, so they can never give a bad score.
@sixrings it doesn't unfortunately. It resulted in a disciplinary after our first zoom meeting in work.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Jeffrey Toobin? Nice to meet you.
@sixrings it wasn't what it looked like, I was just "repositioning" myself.
This port has fixed literally every issue I had with the original game. Well worth the purchase and browsers fury is just a big ol cherry on top
@C-Olimar Sonic ‘06 wasn’t ‘barely functional’, it just had a lot of questionable design. (Especially Silver’s stages and the lack of a save point at the beginning). The hub world was fun to unlock and the graphics were solid.
@Clyde_Radcliffe that’s a funny comparison
Friday needs to hurry up. I can’t wait for Nintendo to take my Funds and pre-install it ready for the 12th.
@p0cketpingp0ng uhh... King's Road? :-0
@Muddy_4_Ever it's been said that it's about 6 hours to finish and another 6 hours to 100% it.
3D World was such a good game, the most fun I've had in a 3D Mario, I really enjoyed Odyssey but I feel like in terms of a game you can enjoy by yourself or with other people, 3D world was just head and shoulders better.
I did play the hell out of 3D World, but I didn't quite 100% it, I'm hoping one of my friends gets it and we can play online and try to 100% it.
Also apparently BF will be about 3 hours to beat, 6 to 100%. That said, I'm confident I'll enjoy this way more than the Pokemon DLC or something like that. Plus 3D World is a great game. This is one of those ones that I just have to get day one. If only out of the hope that there'll be a 3D World sequel.
I'm really confused, is everyone expecting a bad score from this? It's a port of an awesome game that was released for Wii U that has MORE content. Of course it's going to get a high score.
At the moment, Gal gun has top priority for me for games released in February.
@DavidMac I thought 3D World was brilliant, I'm still torn as to whether I prefer it to Odyssey, it's very close in my eyes. Both are packed with so many clever ideas.
@1ofUs Mario had donned the Tanooki suit so many times and Bowser has dabbled in fursuits as well. We saw this coming, right?
@1ofUs That would be interesting 😏 😂
@MrGlubGlub how disappointing
@shazbot just saw they gave acaf a 8/8/8/8 score
Im like
🤨
Yeah the Bowsers Fury looks cool and is probably allot fun als Godzilla Monster Movies.
I am still excited about the online mode I think this will keep us a busy for a good time.
Damn it my backlog is getting larger by the month.
@DavidMac Indeed, its my favorite 3D Mario game as well and the amount of hate it received on various forums back in 2013 still astounds me. This will be my 3rd time buying the game and I'll be keeping it this time.
The additions and improvements to this version will make future replays more fun.
I was really hoping for a playable Daisy though....
It just seems to me that every AAA game gets an 8/10 minimum score, in many cases undeservedly.
IGN in particular seem incapable of giving a game below a score of 9.
@C-Olimar IGN gave Axiom Verge a score of 7.9/10.
I have established a policy - low scores from IGN are to be taken as an endorsement.
honestly I thought that Nintendo was just gonna add a new character slap a deluxe at the end of the title
@SMUGSLOTH69 Are... are you saying that you don't appreciate Funky Mode...??
Played the original once. Hated how slow it felt. That update worth alone makes me want to get it. Kind of wish we had a new Mario to play instead, but whatever
@Muddy_4_Eve hi
Still not worth 60 dollars
@mikegamer Assuming millions of copies are sold at $60... you will be, by definition of market value... wrong.
@C-Olimar IGN definitely gives lower than 9. Look at any Pokemon game that isn't Sword and Shield.
@shazbot not everyone, I liked it. People were disappointed it wasn't a real Animal Crossing game, but not me, I was just happy to play something new. Desert Island Escape made it worth it to me, and I liked the board game despite it being very linear, using the cards added a bit of strategy to it, and the world is charming as hell. It's unlike anything else I've played, and it's not that long, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
@Muddy_4_Ever they alreay said that it's between 2 to 6 hours
@COVIDberry Dang forgot all about that but I swear that 2021 is the year that after all the recommendations that I play DK:Tropical Freeze but only because Arlo says it's the best 2D platformer he's ever played
@SMUGSLOTH69 I consider Tropical Freeze to be the lesser title when compared to DKC Returns (no false modesty here - I appear in the 3rd world of the earlier game). If you like games of this type, though, and don't mind the difficulty, I highly recommend it too. There are some very very good, like superb, levels in the game, and the bosses are better in Tropical Freeze.
Also, these are the only games where I laugh when the hero (that big monkey) fails. The game in general makes me smile. Also, you can be smug when you beat the game...
@holygeez03 That's nice
@Muddy_4_Ever it's already been reported by people with access to the previews as 3-6 hours long (to beat / to 100% respectively).
@Friendly oops, I did the same!
@COVIDberry Dope I'll try to get it soon
