One of the big releases for the Nintendo Switch this week is Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.
Although we've already got a good idea of how it runs on the hybrid device, John Linneman of Digital Foundry has now shared his own technical analysis of the game alongside the new PlayStation 5 version. Both are running on Unreal Engine 4.
In terms of resolution, in docked - the average for Switch is between 720p and 792p, while the portable mode is around 540p with dips below this - particularly during "more demanding" cutscenes.
"the primary difference between docked and portable mode comes down to image quality. The temporal pass present in docked seems to be absent so it looks sharper on the portable screen but with more shimmering."
As for framerate, the Nintendo version is cut in half - with a 30fps cap in place. Though, there are some spikes:
"When performance irregularities emerge, it's typically in the form of a few dropped frames and some 16ms spikes - incorrect frame pacing. Fortunately, this isn't a regular occurrence during normal play."
There are also a number of cuts:
"the cuts are many: first and foremost, dynamic lights are aggressively culled on Switch. As a deferred renderer, usually this doesn't buy back a lot of performance but the Switch is extremely bandwidth-limited which makes this more challenging. This applies to everything from additional scenery lights to large scale flashes during stormy effects. Basically, in most cases, lights are drawn in close proximity to the camera but in certain other sequences, they are completely absent - especially during cutscenes."
"Secondly, mesh detail is reduced across the board. The changes are smartly made, however, and not something you'd necessarily pickup on outside of direct comparisons. It's a smart optimisation to reduce the geometry throughput. Shadow resolution is also pared back significantly with shadow maps now lacking fine detail. This is another smart choice and is typically one of the first visual features you'd scale back on less powerful hardware. Beyond this, water rendering is reduced in quality with the surface no longer distorting objects beneath. Texture detail is also pared back which, again, is expected bearing in mind the vast system memory differential."
What's not quite as expected and even described as "disappointing" is the elimination of post-processing effects such as motion blur and depth of field.
"motion blur gets a bad rap but it was a perfect fit for this game with its per-object implementation and it's sorely missed at the lower frame-rate."
Despite all of this, Digital Foundry still thinks the developer has done a "great job overall" retaining the game's visual signature. Even the loading is decent. All up, the Switch version is "as good" as the other versions, "looks the part and runs consistently".

Not bad not bad at all, I think this looks great on the switch It looks just like I thought it would.
The fact that they still make comparisons between the Switch and 'next gen' systems just shows you that the Switch is still very much 'The Little Toaster That Could', and an ongoing force to be reckoned with.
@Lordplops I know LOL.
Slightly baffled how they can say it’s “as good as the other versions” after such a long list of inferiorities.
Or are they admitting that all these visual compromises and detailed comparisons (yes, even the frame rate) are pointless because the game has all the same gameplay and features?
@gaga64 Yes, that's what they are suggesting - but only to some. These things are subjective. They are presenting the pros and cons in a way that you can make your own decision based on preferences/taste.
I need this as a physical release in Spain. Activision, don't be an *****!!
Was a little concerned about the lack of pre-release footage and the $40 price tag, but I feel very reassured. I was worried this might be another Sonic Forces situation, where the game would be 20 dollars cheaper than expected due to poor quality of the game, despite the developers insisiting otherwise. There's really no reason they shouldn't have charged full price for this game compared to the PlayStation and Xbox versions, especially considering how much time and effort went into optimization for Switch. Say what you will about Activision being a scummy company--I hated them myself until a few years ago--but I really think they've become far more consumer-friendly than modern Nintendo. They have my support.
@arekdougy I know, it just seems slightly awkward phrasing, as if they themselves don’t actually care about the differences and are only doing the video for the pay check.
No thanks, I'll stick with the Playstation version. I can now even play it as the PS5 version.
And guys, believe me, this game is hard as hell. 100% in the levels is another thing than in the nsane trilogy.
I wouldn't want to play it with this poor performance.
Cool. Waited for this one on Switch because I want it portable so good to see it performs well.
Most people who buy this game for the Switch, will neither care or even be aware of any differences.
@gaga64 They did say in the video that nowadays being the worst version isn't much different from being the best unlike say, previous different versions between consoles in years past where one is vastly different to the other.
So in a way they did just say...yeah it doesn't matter.
Also the video made me laugh: Switch vs PS5, seems legit.
Sounds like a good port for those without the other consoles or want handheld play, i already own it on PS4 so i shell stick with that version.
I've got a Series S but I still want to get the Switch version for handheld play. Can't say the same about Apex Legends, FIFA and stuff like that but Crash just feels a bit more Nintendo-ey.
And you guys still haven't a review! Priorities and all that...
At this point, games taking a slight visual hit to make into Switch is par for the course. As long as it still plays well and there's no content cut, I'm happy to sacrifice some dynamic lighting.
Does anyone know what's going on regarding a physical release for Crash 4 on Switch? There seems to be boxart floating around but nowhere is actually selling it. (Although Game have it up as a pre-order tbd-2021.)
It's actually not bad. Definitely a stark contrast to Apex.
I thought when activision said it was 1080p docked that they might mean between 900p-1080p. But here we are at 720p again. I don’t have a Mclassic so unfortunately I will be crossing this off my list.
Why cull the render distance on static lights instead of just baking them in?
Why remove effects like lightning flashes, just because they've been done the least cost effective way possible?
I know they had to look for specific things that are visibly different, and I know the team responsible for the port didn't have all the time in the world.
But relying on Unreal Engine sometimes seems to make people forget that the exact same things were achieved fifteen years ago in considerably more GPU friendly ways.
If you're not running them both side by side I doubt most people would really be able to tell the difference.
@Mark_C Its out in Australia i got my physical version this morning from amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Crash-Bandicoot-About-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B08X4Z4WLX/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=crash+4&qid=1615541902&sr=8-1
@Lordplops I mean its great but lets not kid ourselves that the Switch is somehow comparable to the next gen consoles graphically.
Remember the 8 bit and 16 bit days when we used to play games for something called ‘fun’
Now it seems every release has to be scrutinised on a technical level and in many ways convincing people to somehow enjoy the game less.
@johnvboy Most of them wouldn't even know that Digital Foundry or Nintendolife even exist.
@HamatoYoshi tell me about it.
It's not just the resolution, textures and lighting but the game is quite demanding (I mean gameplay) and after playing New Super Lucky's Tale in 120fps on Series X, it's unnatural to play Crash Bandicoot 4 in 30fps. By the way, Crash Bandicoot 4 is being enhanced for Series X (4K 60fps). I'll leave Switch for Nintendo's exclusives.
@wummle Oh right that's cool. I think the physical version is also out already in North America and it's Europe who haven't got it yet. A tad frustrating but hopefully it'll follow soon
No physical release, no purchase.
I am fine with the visuals and FPS but the price in europe is a no go for me atm
@Madder128 what are you talking about??? If you that dumb and can't look around why do you play video games.amazon ship my girlfriends copy this morning.lol u couldn't take 2 secs to look online before making a pointless comment
It looks great to me now just got to wait on my play Asia copy to ship 😬
@elpardo1984 and yet here we both are commenting on an article doing exactly that. Funny, eh?
@HamatoYoshi remember in the 16-bit era when everyone agreed the SNES version of Mortal Kombat had better animation and music than the Mega Drive version, but missed out on the gore? And everyone agreed the handheld version on the technically inferior Game Boy was rubbish as it had missing characters, animation, music and controls?
Debates about which is the best version are not new. It’s just now the gulf is not as obvious, and the analysis is far more technical.
But yes, for me the question is always “is it fun to play?” first.
Seems that where it really matters the gameplay is pretty much the same the thing that has really annoyed me is the lack of physical release would have been day 1 for me but now I will wait for a sale well done activision. I hope this isn’t the road they are gonna go down with Tony hawks 1+2 on switch
@Darkyoshi98 Amazon UK, I don't live stateside.
Bigot.
Just wish it got a physical here in the UK. If it’s staying Digital here then I’ll wait for the price cut (probably sometime in April 😂)
@Lordplops yes DF are comparing them, but the subjective view that they are comparable in terms of performance is overstated.
@elpardo1984 yes, but that's your - subjective - opinion See you on the next PS5 vs Switch comparison
@Lordplops Indeed it is and as this isn’t resetera lets agree to disagree! Happy Gaming
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't someone falsely claim that this game was going to run at 1080p docked and 720p docked, both at 30fps?
I'm disappointed. This game SHOULDN'T be graphically-intensive, but it is. And now we're getting that bare minimum resolution on the Switch. That's just painful for a cartoony game.
Low resolution is fine in 2D games but in 3D games it's not so fine.
@Lordplops Switch being inferior to PS4/PS5 is not subjective its straight up objective, the difference between TW3 on the PS4 and on Switch is pretty huge as is Doom Eternal. There's also not a chance in hell it could ever get a graphically intense game like Red Dead 2 or TLoUP2 on there either. The Switch is powerful yes and its amazing it can get these ports but it has limits and isn't even as powerful as the OG Xbox One.
Runs fine on docked, looks like an interactive bitmap on handheld.
@HamatoYoshi Right on, man. While I am impressed with how in depth Digital Foundry's can be with their analysis of games it does though bother me some. I feel when they point out any inferior elements (obviously with Switch there will be a plenty) it can swing the views of many who normally wouldn't have cared much. Their initial "hey that game looks like fun" mentality changes to "its not that good it has too many compromises for my taste in fact it kinda sucks now" or something along those lines. If you want evidence of this just not only read these comments but on the YouTube's page of their videos. Pretty much its mostly so much debate and hate on Switch that otherwise wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for videos like this that point out things telling you should be upset about.
Anyone with half a brain should know that pretty much anything ported to Switch WILL come with compromises in some form. What's important though is the core of the game is there and its playable as its meant to be (or very very close to it). I mean seriously its being compared to a freaking PS5!
@WallyWest that wasn't the point I was making, you can reread my comment is you want. I'm saying that they can be compared. Of course it's inferior, doesn't mean you can't compare them and have a version that, while lacking certain elements/graphical tricks, is essentially the same game and is recognisable as such.
@Nintendo4Sonic poor performance! How is stable 30fps poor performance? The base PS4 version was uncapped 60fps and has performance issues. Should have been locked to 30fps. I downloaded for switch last night and the game is great.
@WallyWest of course a portable console launched 4 years ago isn't as powerful as an base Xbox one. That was never gonna be possible 4 years ago.
@Gs69 £25 Russia eshop my friend
@ModdedInkling base Xbox is 900p. The game was never gonna reach that on switch.
@BlueOcean someone is gonna be disappointed when they see the Xbox series X performance issues. It isn't locked 60fps!
Definitely will pick this up eventually, but backlog is too overloaded to justify an immediate purchase (to wit: still haven’t worked my way through Crash 2-3 on Switch, or wrath of cortex on Xbox 360). In other words, the question is not if; it’s about [what] time.
YES! it's out! cant wait to play this!
@Ganner I've seen many times on here people saying "urgh, I'll see what Digital Foundry has to say" rather than thinking for themselves. Then you see them posting somewhere else on the site "When is N64 coming to online???!?!?!". Hmmm. Fair weather graphics whores.
@kobashi100 activision themselves said it was 1080p. I didn’t expect it until they said it. But now that they gave me that expectation I am disappointed and won’t be buying. The end of story. Activision shouldn’t have said anything other than they got it to run on switch. Instead they got people’s hopes up.
Not sure why Activision said 1080p docked when that clearly isnt the case
They also screwed over physical collectors
Digital Foundry is a scourge on this industry. Human eyes are perfectly capable of determining if a game is attractive or not. DF, on the other hand, encourages people to judge how attractive something is based on a list of numbers and tech jargon.
If it looks good to you, play it and enjoy it. You'll likely never be concerned about any of these things that DF brings to your attention. If it doesn't look good to you, you don't need a third party to tell you that anyway
@kobashi100
Which pretty much says how poor the optimization is as a whole. The game works and runs quite well, but man that resolution is never on their side. One of Activision's biggest problems with most of their devs is that they keep prioritizing one and only one platform.
@kobashi100 bargain but do you have to buy eshop cards or can you use a card that’s registered in UK ?
You have to appreciate the work on the port to be fair. This is the version I will play despite owning a PS4 as well. I honestly barely notice these fine visual and frame-rate details tonthos extent. I want the gameplay. Interesting nonetheless.
@Gs69 you can use UK debit card.
@Yodalovesu "Digital Foundry is a scourge on this industry. Human eyes are perfectly capable of determining if a game is attractive or not. DF, on the other hand, encourages people to judge how attractive something is based on a list of numbers and tech jargon."
I strongly disagree, I really love watching DF videos and find them to be very helpful helping inform my opinion on games/consoles. I would never solely rely on DF to make a decision but I absolutely use the information they present to decide whether or not I want to buy something on a particular platform.
The fact that everyone is giving activisions blatant lie a pass should encourage other developers to claim their games also run at full HD 1080p.
@Yodalovesu I for one are on both sides of the fence. I definitely agree with a lot you said. It does create and swing a narrative for how to judge games. Again, look at the comments on here or YouTube when these videos release. They're full of the back and forth of "they removed the shadows and grass details!? Game is unplayable!!!" and "hell yeah its not a broken mess of a port its highly playable and fun experience!".
I do appreciate their dedication to inform the consumer of what they're buying into. That's how I see it. Developers and publishers marketing can easily be the real scourge of the industry. I've fell for it many times and the tragedy of Aliens Colonial Marines will forever make my heart slowly bleed to a painful death. As @contractcooker said it does help make a better uniformed decision on where to spend the $. It just depends on how you perceive the information. Unfortunately though throughout the generations I feel its because of videos like DF it does create a narrative more focused on those small technical details and less on straight up is the game fun as is. There's always 2 sides to the coin.
@gaga64 I prefer the objective look, because I don't care what they care about. They are making the video for a paycheque. They are paid to objectively parse the difference in graphical performance between platforms. That's their job.
@Ganner yeah man. I agree. Digital Foundry seem genuinely interest in what they report on. And they do a great job at it. I can't fault them for that.
The "perfection or else!" narrative you referred to is just an unfortunate by-product of what they do. And I guess that's what I really take issue with. Not DF themselves
@kobashi100 thanks think I will have a look into that later
@WiltonRoots I've said it before that I believe a lot of it is a generational thing. I hope not to trigger anyone but I believe us 90's gamers that lived through the REAL Console Wars definitely have a completely different perception of how to see games as they are. Yes we love technical achievements and advancements as the rest however we have a better understanding that's not everything. As developers pushed and pushed more advancements throughout those earlier generations they were still forced to work inside limitations. Those limitations forced creativity, iron out game play mechanics, plenty of content for replayability, etc. Imagine getting all that for one flat price! Developers now that spend more time making sure the shadows, the leaves on a tree are perfect, the armor on the character models are perfect etc. and less time on making sure the game itself is good really rub me the wrong way.
I've said it to @HamatoYoshi before to see how far the narrative has changed throughout the generations is the SNES port of Killer Instinct back in the day. Now that was a HUGE downgrade from the arcade version to the SNES. I should probably throw in the word MASSIVE to the downgrade. However, publications and the players united in celebration of how unbelievably awesome it is to now have Killer Instinct at home. Any compromises (there was a ton!) were noted but completely accepted because we just wanted this game at home to play. Oh it was such a privilege to experience that gaming era. Nowadays any compromises are seen as a negative and should be looked at under the toughest eyes of scrutiny. This is not to be confused with unplayable broken messes of ports. That's a completely different situation and did happen even in those days.
@kobashi100 i was speaking for myself.
You can do what you want.
You could also choose to play Street Fighter 2 on Switch or on Game Boy. I would prefer the Switch.
@Nintendo4Sonic cool, you failed to justify your poor performance claims so no problem. Not liking crash 4 @ 30fps does not equal crash 4 performance is bad. There is a clear difference.
Why was the PS5 version chosen to compare instead of PS4?
@Ganner Those were the days. I remember seeing Strider in the arcade and thinking no console can run that...then the MD version came out. It wasn't perfect but it still wowed. Then we had Street Fighter II on the SNES...
