What's with all the comments about graphics? This article isn't about the graphics, it's about this new Legends spin off looking so bland.
Arceus has a unique setting, unique art style, new gameplay, an unprecedented scope for the series - everything about it was bold and exciting. This looks like... just more Pokemon content. What happened to the striking black and neon blue cyber aesthetic from the teaser trailer, for instance?
@Ogbert I feel the same. The name had previously been a trusted source of quality for a very specific niche of gaming - experimental, cinematic, visually striking. Now I'm not sure what to expect from them.
@bluemage1989 except the story said that "ALL" of Annapurna Interactive's staff walked out, including the president and other executives.
This dev is a critical darling for some reason. I've never played the original Citizen Sleeper but I played another game he put out called In Other Waters that also reviewed really well. It was one of the most boring games I've yet played on Switch.
@Yalloo you got the ending wrong because nowhere does the game hint about the thing you said it's about nor does that wikipedia page you said you referenced. Either you don't know what that thing is, or you're thinking about a different game.
Thanks to JohnnyMind for the spoiler help. I didn't know that was possible on this site.
@Yalloo mods can you delete this guy's comment? He openly spoils the ending of Rime, one of my most favorite moments from gaming during the Switch era (but somehow still gets it wrong).
@the_beaver big patches were released for Rime post-release on Switch which improved the game drastically from its launch state. When I played it, there may have been some stutters here and there but I found it to be quite enjoyable.
Anyhoo, this stinks. I loved Rime, Song of Nunu is in my backlog, and I've had my eye of Gylt since it released (it received fairly positive reviews on other platforms).
"The sworded issue of EoW's frame rate landed a much more succinct response from co-director Tomomi Sano, who simply replied that the developers felt the variable approach was the "best option" available."
"WE enjoyed a lot of OUR playthrough, but WE also sometimes found OURselves genuinely frustrated. More than once WE asked ourselves if WE were really having any fun at all."
From the thumbnail, I thought this was going to be The Gecko Gods. ...which coincidentally is another indie announced at an Indie World presentation which has yet to release. (Don't worry though, its eshop web page says it is still scheduled to come out in Spring 2024!)
@Jack_Goetz it released silently on Switch in March of this year. NintendoLife's own forums have posts from someone that played it on Switch. Oddly though it seems to have been since removed from the E-shop just as quietly as it was originally released
Why isn't anyone talking about Sackboy and Ratchet also making their first appearance on a Nintendo console? Both characters are available as costumes in this.
@ScalenePowers kind of, except I see it happening with Donkey Kong Country Returns in January. That'll give them one last Xmas / Black Friday to focus on squeezing out more Switch sales
This is why you don't write articles based on tweets from random strangers. I stopped watching when this article about how Astro Bot copies Mario design started showing clips from Pikmin and then ARMS
Am I looking at the same screenshots as everyone else? This looks incredible. The last M+L Game that I can remember was the one with Paper Mario in it, and this looks light years beyond that
@-wc- Same. I find myself disappointed with a lot of well-regarded games in this genre, the most recent being Prince of Persia. I can't help but feel like the genre has lost its way, honestly. Modern Metroidvanias remind me a lot of bad open world games, where the large interconnected map does little to enhance the gameplay, and instead just makes getting from place to place a chore.
That really sucks. Humble Games is one of the absolute best indie publishers in the industry. Their name is on not just one or two, but several of my new favorites from the Switch era. What happened?
@kryz and somehow after two years you're the first comment to point that out! I was shocked to see it described as a roguelite as well, there's nothing about the game that could fit into that category. Losing your money when dying makes it closer to being a souls-like than anything
What's up with the Outer Wilds port, NintendoLife? It's got over 20% of the vote above, but there's not a peep from any news sites anywhere about quality of the Switch version
Game artists only make $48K a year in Japan while working for one of the world's largest videogame companies? That seems low. Google says that's around the average salary in Japan
I never played the first but this is kind of a weird review. I definitely felt the "one more go" feel as I would reach each checkpoint and refill my energy + buy new upgrades
Also the music in this game is great. Not sure why the reviewer wanted "thoughtful ambient" music for an action packed kitty-themed sci fi shmup, but the music is one of the strong points of the game.
Funnily, 7/10 is a perfect score for the game ha. I just found the specific complaints here didn't match my personal experience
I find it kind of silly that the release of what many call one of the best games ever made is a sign that Nintendo needs a new console. One of the best games of all time is on Switch. Let that sink in for a second.
And if we're being realistic, it is very unlikely that Nintendo's next console will be more powerful than a PS5. So, in that case even an upgraded Switch would still be old tech. How long will everyone demanding a new console be happy with something like that? Pretty soon even something as powerful as a base PS4 is going to be woefully inadequate in the eyes of those who live on the cutting edge
I also kind of feel like this shows how dangerously close we could have been to another video game movie disaster had Miyamoto not heavily involved himself in Hollywood's process
... But I also think it's going to be one of the biggest disappointments in the history of the Zelda series, especially after the insane heights that were achieved by the original and that this game is being expected to meet or exceed.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed I'm on board with that theory. I don't believe Nintendo has poured the entirety of the Zelda team's development resources into making this sequel.

Why no Mario Maker 2?
Re: Review: Everhood 2 (Switch) - A Subversive, Surprising Yet Shallow Undertale-Inspired RPG

Honest question for the NintendoLife staff:
In December of 2024, how many people do you think are reading this review wondering if Switch is the best place to play a brand new PS5 game?

Can you stop reporting on this trash, NintendoLife? I know it gets you clicks but this is giving free publicity to bad faith individuals.
Re: Californian Law Dictates Storefronts Be Honest About Digital Game Ownership
I didn't know digital content on gaming consoles could be removed from your devices remotely until recently.
For physical, they can't take the actual disc and box away from you, but they can certainly update software to make that disc practically useless.
I think that's why a previous commenter said both physical and digital are just licenses

YES. It's 2023 and there is a Mario Movie with Chris Pratt voicing Mario now. And it worked! We're not in the same era anymore.
