Ubisoft's next major release for multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch is Immortals Fenyx Rising.
We've obviously gone hands-on with it about a month ago, and now we've had even more time to see what it's like. To help tide you over until its release, our lovely senior video producer Alex Olney has whipped up a few new videos.
First, we've got a side-by-side graphical comparison of the Switch version and PlayStation 5 release:
And next up is more than 10 minutes of gameplay footage. Enjoy!
Take a look at both videos and let us know if you'll be adding this game to your Switch library when it arrives next month.

So they remove all the lighting effects and down the overall detail but it still looks like the same game to me. Perfectly playable.
The Switch version really doesn’t look bad, just a whole lot worse than the PS5. Which is to be expected.
Doesn't look too bad for a switch game but man...idk.
The difference is negligible if you can appreciate the power disparity between the two.
If anything, the Switch version is superlatively more impressive given its capabilities. Though Ubisoft isn't exactly renowned for their optimisation either (and a big fat day one "update" is expected).
The Switch version actually looks good enough. Not amazing, but good enough, even a bit impressive, since this seems like a bit of a demanding game, and there's a 99% chance that there will be a day one update, so it'll probably look better by then.
I still don't like this game's artstyle though, ew. The initial artstyle in the reveal trailer (when it was called Gods and Monsters) was so much better. I'm scared for what this game will turn out to be.
The problem isn't the Switch, hell, not even the Ps5 (duh), but it's really the game itself. It's so bland and it's style is if Fortnite's skins got dehydrated, burnt, run over twice, and then Ubisoft just did an Ok job fixing it. This game just looks bad so far. Literally could've used the pandemic as an excuse to make it look better, but they NEEDED it to launch around the same time as the Ps5.
I'm too dang tired to rant on Ubisoft any further though, so if Nintendo Life has more Ubisoft-related news, I might show Ubisoft my wrath.
The flippant narration and dialogue are driving me up a wall. I really wanted to like this game when I first saw it, but everything about it, from the art-style on down, just annoys the hell out of me.
Less Breath of the Wild than Shrek of the Wild.
Anyway, as others have said, it seems like an impressive enough conversion given the limitations of the hardware.
The Switch version doesn't look bad, but I'll hold of buying it on Switch until I know how it handles handheld. Which I've seen absolutely nothing of. (Which really worries me)
I have bought the PC version of the game. Which I will be able to run in 4K60 on my TV (yes, connecting via HDMI to my TV is something I do)
It looks like the Switch version holds up quite well. There was always going to be a noticeable difference if you compare the two but it shouldn't make any significant impact to the experience. Hopefully it runs well handheld.
Looks pretty good to me. I may double dip in a few years when the game is 20 bucks if I like it enough. But this looks just fine on Switch. Will get the gold edition.
I am a little annoyed by that stamina bar though.
Graphics set aside, the game itself seems to lack... something. Can't put my finger on it though. Will wait for reviews.
The game looks great I can't wait to get my copy.
I thought the Switch vs PS5 comparison was going to be comical, but I was pleasantly surprised by how decent it looked in many scenes.
Honestly, I expected a whole lot worse, I like how both versions of the game look, just different reasons
Holy moly, but how? Switch version still looked beautifull. I want to see aome docked vs undocked video.
Switch holds up well in that comparison. I think were reaching a point of graphical fidelity where the gains from the newest hardware are very marginal. A bit more shadow here, better reflections there, more realistic hair... All nice but not amazingly different to the previous generation. Nothing like the jump from SD to HD, for example. Like a slightly nicer gloss on this year’s Ferrari. For a Switch Pro to keep up with the next gen I think it essentially just needs a bit more grunt to maintain frame rates. Graphically I think it doesn’t need that much more (for me).
I'm glad it looks good on switch because I already pre-ordered it there lol. This is going to be my big Christmas game, and I can't wait to get into it!!
Eh those character animations look super blocky, almost like a marionette running around. Nice comparison though, can't believe the Switch version holds up to the PS5. Obviously, PS5 has way more detail but very impressive none the less.
@thiswaynow This game isn't really a good comparison as its nowhere near a next gen game. Looks a kind of like Overwatch if you ask me.
Difficult to see colassal differencence there. You can see the Switch version certainly looks lesser graphically but doesn't look huge to me. Or maybe that is me.
5 pixels less here and there, 5 shadows less here and there, 5 trees less here and there, 5 wrinkles less here and there. I think I can cope with that.
Awesome animation for AAA (or AAAA?) game. ME Andromeda level of quality.
@ritouf : It's usually about 4-6 weeks.
While not a Ubisoft game, Need For Pursuit: Hot Pursuit only came out 2 weeks ago, and it's already more than 40% in Australia! Similarly, FIFA 21 is already half price and that was only released a short time ago as well. But Ubisoft is particularly notorious for heavily discounting their games so soon after release.
Looks good to me! I'll be getting it on Switch, seems more like a Switch title. But I may wait and see how it runs on the system first.
Looks fantastic
Seems a bit weird comparing the PS5 version to the switch and not the PS4 but the switch seems to hold up for the most part.
Will be holding off buying until I've seen how it runs handheld because if I need to play docked to avoid choppy frame rates I may as well get the better version for the same price.
Less atmosphere, less detail, less shader, less lighting, no HDR, it's all to be expected to keep the framerate up. Had you showed it without the PS5 version next to it, I would have had no problem at all! Is it worth 500 bucks to upgrade to PS5 and have your hands tickled. Only for purists I would say.
Game looks like crap, No matter if its on PS5 or Switch
Despite its legitimate QoL steps, PS5 is still the more "graphics-oriented" console of the two, so graphical comparison videos could make even Captain Obvious roll his eyes.
My relationship with PS5 ended before it ever began, the moment it became clear that Sony isn't updating Vita to stream the new console. For all of the Fiver's merits, she's still chained to your living room, her entire portability limited to phone/laptop+gamepad contraptions. The Switch version could run at 20 FPS for all I care, and still allow you to get further down that world and story than its slicker and expectedly smoother counterpart - because it just gives more windows of playtime by design.
More power (pun intended) to people who want the ability to play games with visual fluff and higher framerate, but I'll always prioritise Switch ports in pursuit of the ability to PLAY games, period.
What is going on with her teeth in the Switch footage!? Surely they don't need to make them so bright. The PS5 character actually looks pretty, the Switch one looks like a typical video game funny face.
It looks like this game was made targeting Switch.
Looks good considering we're comparing a three and a half year old handheld system to a home console that came out last week.
Anyway I'm really excited for this game, it looks excellent.
The graphic comparison was interesting, in some sections I prefereed the switch quality and others PS5..... iit looks like this could be a great game
They have done a good job I reckon. Switch version looks pleasingly less cluttered.
I don't know guys, it looks awesome to me. Maybe the art style was better before (although everyone complaint because it looked a lot like BotW... Meh), but everything around it looks great. Maybe I won't get it day one because Ubisoft games go on sale pretty quickly, but I know I'll get it someday soon.
Surprise. PS5 looks better than Switch. Surprise Lamborghini beats Renault in a race etc.
Blurry backgrounds, visible pop-ins, low resolution and disabled lighting graphics ... the Switch version looks pretty inferior Asking the same price as for the XBox and PS version is outrageous. Legend of Zelda graphics is way better than this.
@TIND that's one of my biggest issues with multi platform games on switch, you pay the same price (or more often more) and you get less.
Hopefully they sort out cloud streaming and we can get the same versions as the other consoles.
I have a LG OLED cx65 wich upscales switch games, it probably looks better then in this vid, also planning to buy a hdmi 4k upscaler for switch.
The dialogs in this game realy triggers me to get this game, the switch miss these kind of games
@TIND
there where times nintendo did not get nextgen titles at all, let alone games for two generations ahead. be glad and accept for what the switch is, or rather buy a ps5.
i personaly think the dialog and story does alot to a game to make it great, i think its a realy good game
Considering the massive gap in performance capability it looks really good on Switch. I am hoping this turn out well as it looks like it could be just the game to keep me going through until BOTW2!!
@ChaosBadger777 Dont even mention cloud gaming. Cloud gaming is a cancer to the gaming industry. It is cool at home where you have broadband, but useless anywhere else. If you game in your home only, why not just buy a PS or Xbox ?
@PALversusNTSC pro announcement likely January as with original release and march/April release
@TIND Totally agree. Cloud is terrible for gaming. You play full dollar for a game that you will never, ever own.
@TIND because I cant play my PS5 on the toilet or when I'm in bed.
How is it a cancer to the industry exactly if it allows you to play games on a system you wouldn't be able to otherwise - or would you prefer to do without because they could eventually shut down the server.
@jarvismp you don't own digital games either so whats the difference?
What it’s not as good as the PS5 version? Nope not getting it. 🤪
Still not getting it. I just have to many games on the backlog.
The Ps5 should be like 2 generations (or 1,5?) ahead of Switch in terms of graphical power. looks at the video The games look almost identical. The lighting just glows a bit more in the Ps5 version. I'm never gonna understand the appeal of these comparison videos unless there are some real differences to compare. Looking at two almost same looking products in a microscope to see the differences is as useless as comparing framerate dips from two games both running at almost stable 60 fps.
Like not even comparing the games i played the demo on stadia and it had great lighting and smooth gameplay and seems to be an almost better alternative than the ps5 since no one can even buy a console but i will be getting 2 copies one for switch so i can play on the go and stadia edition to play in 4k
I’ll be adding it.....to my PS5 library.
I particularly hate these kinds of videos because I wonder if it actually hurts the sales of the switch versions. Compare it to the ps4 or xbox not the ps5 or the Xbox x. Everyone KNOWS by now that the switch isn't all that powerful, which by the way I'm perfectly fine with as I've been a avid nintendo since I can remember. I just don't understand the point that's all
Can we get a fairer comparison? Against PS4 or Xbox One? It's obvious the console that released just last week is going to make the Switch version look rubbish
What about portable mode vs docked?
It looks like a switch game, be more appealing to me on switch then the ps5 ... I want top graphics and big maps on the ps5 realistic games
This is suited to the switch , the ps5 will no doubt gather dust like the PS4
I wish this was a new Kid Icarus game!!
@N8tiveT3ch tbh except for the grass which could use some work(i'm crafting to think BotW really set an interesting standard for grass-that-look-good-but-easy-on-performance)and the fact the skyboxes feel a bit more generic than BotW whose skies and day/sunset/sunrise transitions seem really done, this game (on a technical rather than artistic level) seem roughly similar to BotW. Like said, raw tech wise i'm not sure what they could improve except for the grass and skyboxes and for the latter it might be more art direction than tech(even BotW has similar distance fog tech wise but a lot is offset by re: these skyboxes)
@jarvismp
i guess that depends on your internet speed and quality. somebody experienced with stadia?
Quite unfair to compare it to a 2 generations stronger console.... The question is if it looks bad.... And luckily it doesn't
The graphical downgrade for eyes/face of main character really distracts me. I still prefer original god & monsters art style. Unfortunately, the gameplay & enemy footage isn't sparking my interest. We'll see how reviews go.
So I clicked ahead in the first video and honestly didn't know which side was the Switch... the left?
Cant wait for a review. The comparisons to BOTW will obviously be in there somewhere.
@Baker1000 I think that was the point to show off the Switch version compared to PS5. With the lack of power on the Switch this game still looks good on the Switch.
Of course nobody would ever expect it to rival PS5 graphically but this still looks impressive on the Switch and very playable.
Good to know its not much difference between switch and ps5
Something about this game just doesn't seem super appealing to me. Maybe I am just burnt out on open world games!
Took it off my GameFly list after playing the Stadia Demo.
If you have a PS5, better to just get AC: Valhalla. It is the better open world game in every way. And same price.
Go and play the demo before you drop $60 on this, it is 100% free.
@nessisonett,
Yes comparing the Switch to a PS5 is pointless, I mean it was way behind the PS4 and Xbox One base models, so what were we exactly expecting here.
Tbh, that Switch version looks good. I'm not watching the comparison video, but I like the way it looks on my favorite system.
Gameplay wise, honestly looks pretty tame.
Graphics wise, looks too much like fortnite a.k.a bland.
All in all I'm impressed they got it running and at a stable framerate as well. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
Maybe I'll buy it at a discount.
EDIT: After watching a few more videos of gameplay, I came to realize I was wrong. Gameplay and combat looks like it can be fun. Still a bit on the edge about the visuals/art style.
It looks as good as you’d expect from the Switch but I’m glad I have an Xbox Series X and PS5 so I can enjoy these games to their fullest. Console wars are dumb: play them all and everyone wins.
5:56 she's literally crying a sea of tears (looks like they used the sea's ripple effect on her tears).
@PALversusNTSC Even with good internet Stadia is very poor. Tried it out for 3 days and I have a strong connection and it is just awful.
Holy crap, that's a lot of texture pop-in. I thought this game was being developed from the ground up with the Switch in mind. Looks like a so-so port.
The art style and animations seem so also-ran. The whole game just doesn't appeal to me at all. The Switch version would have been fine for me if I didn't see it side by side with the PS4 version with the enhanced lighting, but if I only had a Switch, and some interest in this game, I would have been fine with it.
Let's be honest this game and most games aren't even pushing the ps5 nowhere near. But for this game the switch version looks ok. This game doesn't looI great anyway.
@sanderev Why wouldn't you?
It looks like they built this game for the Switch, and scaled it up for other systems to use things like ray tracing: probably the norm for third party games for a while.
Looks good against the PS5
But boy that intro is enough to make you want to cut your ears off!
It’s almost as annoying as the VO in warframe!
The graphic differences really stand out in the Zeus/Prometheus dialog. Overall the frame rates look good on the switch. Graphics seem good enough. Comes down to gameplay. I preordered as I had some gift cards and could get this at a good discount. Looking forward to exploring the land (similar to my approach to BOTW, just took the time to go beat Ganon after 170 hours in).
Strange one. At times it looks really close but at others the Switch version looks a lot different.
Tough crowd. Seeing some really harsh comments on here.
Seems like Ubisoft actually did treat the Switch version properly. Looks like there were hundreds of people hours to optimize this game with care and an eye for detail.
Especially when other publishers don’t do any of this (EA), I’m of the opinion that we’re way better off praising the effort rather than slamming them because it doesn’t add up to a late 2020 home console or because the art style isn’t your thing.
Seems to me Ubi have done a pretty great job on the Switch version. I'm more impressed by how the Switch version appears than the PS5 - the ability to play portable with what I would consider ample look and feel to enjoy the game fully still comes out on top for me... it ain't even close.
If Nintendo throw a Switch Pro into the ring next year, that's an insta-buy for me even if it was priced as high as a PS5, whereas a PS5 is not on my radar at all yet.
@ChaosBadger777 Game streaming is not a cancer to the gaming industry; this type of gaming allows more people to game on any device that the services support.
Yeah, pretty obvious that the PS5 version looks better. Doesn't matter to me, gonna buy this game on the platform that I actually own with the benefit of portable play.
I think no one will deny that the PS5 version looks better, but aside from the better framerate, everything else is in the smaller details that aren't detracting from the game in any way. Game still look pretty decent on the Switch, although running at a lower framerate and showing a bit less stuff on screen.
I'm impressed. Although I'm not sure I'll get the game. Not at full price at least. Maybe when on sale, some day.
This video proves just how useless the PS5 and XboxX really are. I'm just gonna keep playing games on the Switch. When Sony and Microsoft come up with game series on the level of Super Mario and Zelda, I'll consider them.
Not only do I see no significant difference, I actually prefer the Switch footage. So why are people lining up at stores to get a PS5? What psychopaths. The PS5 does nothing that a Switch can't do, costs more and has no games. In the meantime, I'm playing Hyrule Warriors II.
Yeh that just confirmed that im not bothering with next gen consoles... switch will be fine along with my predotor laptop.
Theres a bigger difference in money to buy a new ps5 or xbox series x than the graphical difference between this game.... crown the switch winner of nex gen already...
What the hell is up with the stupid accents in the voice-over in this game? They sound so jarring especially coming from the top-notch acting in Hades - also about Greek mythology but minus the patronizing attitude toward non English-speaking cultures.
Technically pretty well done, not gonna lie.
But no technically impressive port can hide that hideous and ill fitting main character...
Whoever's responsible for that haircut, please proceed to design characters for radio plays only...
@Ryu_Niiyama it’s Ubisoft, so it won’t even take a full year for it to drop to $20
I’m fine with the graphics of both but I’d still have to see the frame rate of the switch version when fighting many enemies for me to ever consider it on that Switch. For now, I think I’m gonna go with my Xbox Series X to play it
The Switch version is better! No i'm not biased at all...
Nintendolife, did Ubisoft provide the Switch v PS5 video? Or did they request that you run a story comparing the game to the PS5 version? Because you're not the only site to do this, and it seems like such an odd comparison to make. I'm not sure I see what a Nintendo-focused website has to gain by showing its readers how much worse a Switch version of a game looks compared to a version that is running on a vastly more powerful console
Played the demo on Stadia, definitely going to grab the Switch version.
as someone who hasn't had a non-Nintendo console since the Playstation 2 days... I am definitely picking this game up on the Nintendo Switch, and I am glad to see it run well on the Switch at least while the Switch is docked. I also mainly play my Switch docked these days.
The art style helps Switch to the point the difference, although present, will not be significant while playing the game, as I rarely pay attention to details. I wouldn't mind play in the Switch instead of my PC.
While watching the switch gameplay, I got a serious "Reboot" vibe 😆😆😆😆
But the voice acting 😆😆 I kept expecting them to sell me a cell phone or something. "Great deal! For you, today only, my friend!"
I must admit it I'm pleasantly surprised with how good the switch version looks, hopefully it runs good in handheld mode too. I'm a bit disappointed in the ps5 version tho, if I was getting that version I'd expect more of a graphical leap? I'm guessing it's just a glossed over version of the ps4's. 🤷♂️
I think it looks pretty sweet. But it should have been compared to the PS4 version of course, since that's the same generation. But the game was never destined to be a high-end graphic game, I guess the PS4 version looks almost identical to the PS5 version. It is after all more of a lower budget project from Ubisoft, compared to their Assasins creeds and Watchdogs (and there's far less excitement for it).
@realityxaidan Same here!
It will be so fun to have another open-world game to dive into by Christmas.. Since it might take yet another year (atleast) before we get BOTW 2
It's a total botw rip off but I'm gonna get it and enjoy it regardless.
@aSmilingMan *man hours. And yes I agree it looks well done.
@PALversusNTSC
I have been using Stadia as my secondary game console for a year now. It has been a great experience.
My main console will always be the Switch, but for big and demanding AAA titles Stadia is a perfect alternative. I do not need any of the big ugly boxes from Sony or MS anymore.
You can still play the free Demo of Immortals Fenyx Rising on Stadia. Just try it out.
I wasn't expecting the PS5 version to be anything more than a slightly enhanced PS4 version which is pretty much almost what every cross-generational game release around this time is going to be. The good news for Switch is that it can still benefit from the one to two year bleed over and still get some multiplats as well as still keep interest up with a hardware refresh/pro model next year.
Switch in general is still selling too well for Nintendo to abandon it anytime soon which is why I'm expecting it's successor maybe around holiday 2022. By that time PS5 and XSX will be in full gear and Nintendo can release a more comparable successor to the 9th gen boxes that can still get third parties on board.
It's a PS3 game masquerading as a PS4 title being played on a PS5. This should in no way be interpreted as a diminishing gap between console generations. Astro's Playroom and Demon's Souls are better indications of what the PS5 is capable of, and those are just scratching the surface of the next generation's potential.
I doubt im buying a PS5 so I will enjoy this on my switch. It looks great.
@Ambassador_Kong demon souls is a remake of a game that we already played and honestly... its preety crap. My opinion.. astro is super cute but if thats all there is.... its simple not worth it
it looks too rough on switch.
@KnightsTemplar My point was that those two titles are much better examples of the graphical power of the PS5 than Fenyx.
Demon's Souls is a crappy game? I didn't think opinions could be wrong, but here we are.
@Ambassador_Kong demon souls might be good for some sheep... but i find it boring and bland
I actually can’t choose which one I prefer. PS5 looks good but Switch just feels better for the game’s art style.
@Cosats Did you even watch the video? You can see the shading is better, the lighting is better, heck, even the expressions are better! Go back and watch from 5:34 and pay close attention to her eyes, the lighting, etc.
