Remember back in the '90s, when publisher after publisher decided to whack a '64' on the end of their game title when it appeared on the Nintendo 64? Well, it's now 2020 and the trend's still going strong.
Yes, Macbat 64 is an upcoming Switch title from Diplodocus Games, obviously inspired by the many great platformers of the 64-bit era. It's actually described as a "love letter" to those games, even sporting a familiar 4:3 aspect ratio for anyone feeling nostalgic.
Embark on a journey with the lovable bat Macbat, as he ventures through 9 colourful platforming levels to obtain the keys to the water factory to restore water production. Featuring a playful artstyle reminiscent of the 64-bit era, Macbat 64 will fly right to the hearts of all 90s platformer fans.
The game – with its full title of Macbat 64: Journey of a Nice Chap – is launching on Switch this Friday, 2nd October for just $1.99. It appeared on Steam back in 2017 and received 'very positive' user reviews, so this may well be with a look for the price.
What do you think? Would you be willing to spend $2 on a throwback to the N64 days? Tell us below.

If it actually plays well, I could be into it
Worth a punt for 2 bucks methinks
Considering as I was reading this, I was thinking it would have a price tag of $20, being only a few bucks, I'll dig into it. Seems like a pretty good game!
OMG this retro hype needs to stop! This is going too far, developers making an ugly and antiquated game on purpose just to please some retro fanatics is simply wrong.
The game’s subtitle has utterly won me over. Can’t say no to a Nice Chap.
Also, the number of “Super” games on the SNES was just as bad as all the 64 games.
I don't know why, but 'the chunky 90's' killed me.
I hope the developer makes a 2D sidescroller follow-up called "Super Macbat Adventure"
Also, the "N64 inspired" part should read "Banjo-Kazooie inspired"
£2? Count me in, we need more games with 64 in the title
Doesn't look bad for $2
In the video it looks a bit more cheap than n64 but I predict that it will look more natural on a television or switch what do you guys think?
@LilMuku I actually both thought of mario 64 and banjo kazooie when I saw this but that's just me. And also when one thinks of the definitive 3d n64 platformer I think people think of banjo if they know what they are talking about (although an argument for mario 64 could be made banjo is arguably more of a collectathon making it more general for the time period so yeah if its inspired off of banjo its inspired off of n64 platformers as a whole) although I will admit the car with Google eyes actually looks like its from banjo lol
The coin collecting sound effect bothers me. Those N64 era platformers always had a crisp "shiny" sound effect for collecting things and that little blip is so underwhelming in comparison.
Oh it's two dollars?! Only watched the video lol. Definitely picking this up! And it got good reviews on steam I am now officially pumped to get this game
No thanks, I’ll stick with my modern back log of games and when I have a 64 itch I’ll stick with Super Mario All Stars.
Just because the game is $2 doesn’t mean I should just add it if I have no interest. For me personally....before randoms jump on this post. If you wanna add it yourself cause it’s only $2, go for it, why not.
Love this artstyle and can't wait to give this a go. Bring on more low poly love!
For everyone wondering why devs wanna make these kinds of games, I imagine it's cost effective to make low poly games/that they love the art style and have the same nostalgia for this era of gaming that a lot of us do 😇
I remember trying out the demo for this one a few years ago, and it seems to have gotten pretty great reviews. Can't wait to try it out!
@CTmatic who on earth is suggesting you should buy a game in which you have no interest?
You act like this article kicked down your door and demanded you buy the game. But actually, it's an article you chose to read and comment on, and no one has any idea who you are or has made any demands of you.
@shani It's "wrong"? Why do you care if someone makes a product that doesn't appeal to you?
I just feel that when a games 2 pounds full price or on sale I can’t resist, then I download and play for a minute then mite never play again, but yeah I’m sure I will get this! Xxx
Oooff... looks terrible. Even if it’s $2 I should be getting payed to play this, not the other way around.
@shani Get a new hill to die on. Yours is not helpful. If there's an audience for it, let them enjoy it. How many times does this need to be said?
Oh I am SO getting this, especially for that price.
I recently FINALLY got my hands on a copy of Beetle Adventure Racing and Jet Force Gemini so I’m full 64/polygonal right now.
Sure, I'll give this a try for two bucks. I hope the camera is more cooperative than in most games in the N64 era.
Better than I expected before watching the video but I don't like that frame rate.
@Ghostchip Yeah basically, Mario 64 and Crash are the basic answers for "definitive platformer" but, Banjo-Kazooie is definitely THE 3D platformer
Amazing thing is that art style still looks amazing. I wish more studios would go with that style in HD with quality of life upgrades from 2020. I'd love a GoldenEye/Perfect Dark engine FPS to come out.
It dosent look like theres much variety of movements for your character. Thats the grounds of a great 3d platformer
@LilMuku totally dude crash reminds me most of 3d land or world (which is basically IMO Mario's brilliant attempt at a more linear crash like levels) and that one m and m tipoff game that kirbg youtuber antdude played lol. Mario 64 was the first high quality platformer that had something MORE than just levels and IMO it does its own thing and other N64 have more of a collectathon happening in which banjo is easily the best. Not even a competition lol. Mario 64 was just groundbreaking so it comes to mind before a rare title just like how Dkc had three games on the snes and all three are better than mario world (DKC 1 and 3 one could argue are worse but DKC 2 is definitely better). Just like 64, mario world is PHENOMENAL and holds up great today, but the DKC series was better yet is remembered less because mario world is the first big title (not to say world is not one of my favorite games ever!). Yeah too bad microsoft made a good game in the wrong genre as a sequel lol.
On a random note I got sword for the gym leader on your profile pic and when I got to Bea imagine my suprise when I realized I read the exclusive gym leader article wrong lol. Ghost type gym leaders are always memorable to me.
Definite buy - $2 sounds excellent value.
I would also strongly recommend Squidlit for anyone interested in a fantastic $2 game.
@shani well that's fine to think I am not disagreeing or anything but if its popular its popular and I love retro games and am excited for some 64 nostalgia. If it's super easy to developed that is just a bi product lol everyone wins. Like I said I don't always agree with what's popular either fortnite was atrocious and I never liked it. You know what was popular and objectively good? Minecraft. This is totally random but I played that game again for the first time in years and it never lost its touch
This actually looks pretty swell. I’ll give it a go on Steam today.
I'm in for $2, fair warning from what I've read the game takes less than an hour to complete
Man, this looks like a rubbish rip o- wait, $1.99???
please no 4:3. The actual video shows 16:9, but now I'm worried. I'm fine with N64 stylized games, but there needs to be an understanding between which parts of that era should be kept for a retro title, and which shouldn't.
That said... as a throwback, this looks too derivative. Doesn't help that the lead is a purple bat a la Laylee.
I think I'll wait for a sale.
@Toshiro_Baloney Yeah, I'll wait till it's $1.93.
Inspired by Banjo Kazooie. For such a low price this could be a laugh someday.
@Toshiro_Baloney It’s $2!
@Ghostchip Oh damn haha I love Allister tbh, he was a major selling point for me
"Love letter"
Can't they be any more cheesy?
I love the N64 aesthetic but it looks too easy.
If its actually good i will play this
@LilMuku should we take this to chit chat thread???
@dw4smash it got good reviews and it's two dollars I mean I could hate it (I think it looks really good but you never know) and it wouldn't matter I mean I have nintendo points so it is free.
@Toshiro_Baloney 10 percent off! A whole 20 cents man this makes it much more in my price range lol
"Games never need to look better than this!" - me in 1997
I have read reviews of this online after it appeared on the coming soon section of the eshop and from what I have read it is very short and you can get 100% in a hour as it is more like a tech demo than a full game hence the price being so low.
You had me at 4:3! Hope it's 30FPS too.
@BoilerBroJoe gotta be honest I like how people worked around its limitations it gives it a certain charm ya know?
not sure if ill buy it, 2 euro is not much just not sure if the game is any good...
Oh, on Steam for less
I'll give it a try there
@link3710 The gaming community is pretty much alone on the hatred of 4:3 and 30FPS. Movie and TV fans love 30, and many movies, especially indie productions or ones trying to replicate a retro feel, experiment with 4:3.
@Noid if it wants to really feel like an N64 game it should be closer to 10 - 15 fps in places
@Noid Well there's a good reason for the former. 4:3 needlessly restricts your field of vision in a game, where you need to be making decisions based on what you can see. The only place I'd possibly excuse it is in a horror game, where restricting your FOV plays into the feel of the game.
For movies, the audience is only supposed to see what the filmmakers decide. As such, changing aspect ratios is fine.
As for FPS...? I don't get the people who claim 30 FPS make them motion sick (why is this never a complaint for TV or movies at 24 FPS), but yeah, again there's a practical difference. With games, higher FPS translate to more responsive gameplay, a direct improvement in the experience.
@HeroponRiki I was thinking the exact same thing. The music was okay (definitely better n64 style music could be made, but its okay). Just soft tick sound when getting a coin is no good though.
I've played enough games and watched enough trailers to know that this looks exactly like what a $2 game is supposed to
Yeah, I can see why this is $2. It literally looks like a Banjo-Kazooie/DK64 ROM hack. Also, that running animation looks positively awful. If the price tag weren't so low, I wouldn't even consider this game.
3D platformers always are on my watch list
@shani How is this wrong? You’re not obligated to buy it, like it, or play it. Seems fair to me.
Love the feel of this, but I’m a sucker for anything N64 related. At that price, I’ll probably bite.
@shani There's a huge demand for retro style games like this, not everything has to be a huge 100 hour AAA title. Sometimes people just wanna play something simple like this. I for one welcome more retro style games, a great idea to bring back the 64 bit era like people did with the 16 bit. Plus, its only 2 bucks!
Well for $2 I sure can't have any issue with the price
