It's been 4 years (and a few days) since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, alongside the Nintendo Switch itself. Despite not being a particularly big anniversary, it's been celebrated nonetheless by fans and game critics alike.
The latest birthday present for Link and friends is a Twitter trend in which people are sharing their first four screenshots of Breath of the Wild - or their first four screenshots on Switch, which are much the same thing for most people - and it's been absolutely lovely to see the wonder and amazement of that game told through photographs.
You can see when people have captured a moment that blew them away, like the incredible expanse of Hyrule, or moments of discovery, which mostly seem to involve Koroks and the Blood Moon.
Of course, we didn't want to pass up an opportunity to join in a trend - so a few of us gathered together our first four screenshots, ready to show the world.
Unfortunately, many of the NL team have since deleted or lost their screenshots and memory cards - which isn't a huge surprise, since we have to take screenshots for reviews, so our space is at a premium. Still, it's a bit sad to have lost that bit of history. We will have to make do with what we have!
Kate Gray - Staff Writer
A focus on "exciting things" here - riding bears, Blood Moons, and paintings. The attempt at symmetry with the spherical bomb and the moon has not gone unnoticed, but the framing is just a bit pants. The picture of the painting is quite a nice one, because it shows how much attention to detail BOTW has - the painting could have easily been blank, or uninteresting, but instead we have a little story about Pikango, the travelling painter who dreams of seeing the Great Fairy Fountain.
Liam Doolan - News Reporter
Liam notes that these are even "in order" - and we get our first look at the Great Plateau, too, with the Temple of Time outlined in sunshine. Most people were too busy actually basking in the awe of Breath of the Wild's first few hours to even remember to take pictures, so it's nice to see someone documenting it. There's also a picture of Brigo, the guy on the bridge who Austin Walker also mentions as being your first encounter with another person (except the King).
Gavin Lane, Features Editor
Gavin's screens have a lot in common - they're all photos of landscapes. Also, they're all quite nice. Much better framing than the rest of us. Just look at that sunset one. That could be in a gallery. There's also a nice range of lighting, here, from the sun rising, to the sun setting, to a moonlit night, and a bright daytime beach. Honestly, Gav's really showing the rest of us up here with this selection.
Ollie Reynolds, Reviewer
A gorgeous first screenshot from Ollie, followed by a pretty cool shot of the monk cage exploding into fibreglass light shards. Beyond that, Ollie seems to have been taken with the utter coolness of the Magnesis power, and... er... Link's unflattering exhaustion face. Hey, we can't all be photogenic.
Gonçalo Lopes, Reviewer
Well, that sure is... a lot of shirtless Links. We won't judge - 100 years in a cave is obviously a great workout routine.
What do your first four screenshots of Breath of the Wild show? Are they good photographs, or merely evidence of something cool that you didn't have time to frame well? Let us know in the comments!

sadly the last screenshot i have on my switch is two toads from the mario tennis aces testfire back in 2018, the other ones must've just been deleted
All my screen shots are accidental pictures taken while frantically button mashing, usually when my kids are playing Smash Bros or Mario 3D World.
And I seem to take a lot of accidental pictures while playing Hollow Knight when the action gets really intense 😄
No Zelda pictures for me though.
I only have 1 picture, which is of NPCs standing sideways for some reason.
You can ride the bear? I had no idea.
This is my first and only screenshot from Breath of the Wild:
@sketchturner Lol same. The buttons all seem to merge into one fighting Grimm!
All my screenshots are of the nude corpses in L.A. Noire... for my medical examination fetish.
It's been 4 years, as if I would still have the first 4 screenshots of BotW on my Switch
Really cool. Definitely going to check out my first few screenshots next time I’m on my Switch!
Also, I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never actually beat Breath of the Wild. This is the year though... I’m beating it this year. Mark my words!
So 90 Percent will be the same :>
@mariomaster96
Well, i have Screenshots from 2004 ^^
People have different priorities.
Some like to look over their past Adventures
I still play this game occasionally after four years, it's just amazing. The recent talk of the Switch Pro makes me hope for the possibility of backwards compatibility enhancements for regular Switch titles. Imagine Korok Forest without all the frame rate drops...
I recently deleted all of my clips and screens because I never look at them and they were taking up like 20GB.
My first 4 pictures have long gone as I swapped my Switch for the upgraded version with better battery life
@YoungLink64
Did I miss this?...how?
@RupeeClock #4
Yup, it's awesome!! Sadly you can't register a bear in the horse stall.
I remember my first 3 pictures...I took a picture of me in the throne room which was dangerous and that was in 2017 in December. 2nd pic was me stuck in a rock somehow and 3rd was a pic of my dead horse that l killed on purpose because l wanted to test if the horse can actually die...and that's when l knew l had to be careful around enemies with my horse. But they're deleted because l like saving space. And that's when l was still new to the game
Sadly, I'm the one guy who played the Wii U version, so can't take part
Oh, well, since I played it on the Wii U first, I guess my screenshots don't count.
People use the screenshot feature on this thing? heh.
SCREENSHOT NINJA APPROVED
@sketchturner same here!
I should make an habit of taking screenshots of my own volition, though
I still have all my screenshots (plus they are backed up on my computer to turn into desktop backgrounds) and I still love the atmosphere of this game. Those pics take me back.
Mine are forever gone with Miiverse. Sad.
Played it on the Wii U first, never took any screenshots.
My first pictures have link wearing the red Switch tshirt, one of link smashing a sword on the ground. I have 1,908 photos and videos. You know, a smattering of shots
Pro Tip I just discovered, you can scroll faster if you swipe with your finger rather than with buttons/analog stick.
Side note: I have 15 GB of videos/photos. lol. Most is rocket league videos shots/antics, Splatoon. I deleted a gig's worth. Need to widdle that down more.
I first played on wii u, so that sucks. I remember getting lost early game in the mountains surrounding Zora's domain, and wandering around for ~10 hours trying to get there and wondering why the rain won't stop. Fun times!
EDIT I just uploaded my first video I saved! It's kind of embarrassing for my first switch death, but here it is for those curious!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ew6vEc1oXY
@KateGray Yeah, now I'm really not embarrassed about asking you awkward questions anymore...
Based on the responses from the writers, I'm wondering how many of you have a photography hobby. Mine are landscapes too, Gavin...
Maybe I could share my first four screenshots, if I hadn't sent my Switch in for repairs
It came back wiped clean. I had all my digital games and cloud saves, but not the screenshots or clips.
@samuraicop That's the same look Ocarina, Majora and Twilight princess managed to achieve
I must have jumped back down into the cave after my first screenshot, because this is the order that I took them in:
https://twitter.com/gcunit10/status/1368319442220941317?s=19
This was my first screenshot:
@Inc I went with the Wii U version too which paid off, as it arrived a day early in the post. I took so many screenshots and was even popular on Miiverse for 24 hours. Sadly, I didn't back up my miiverse posts before Nintendo took it down
@LXP8 How old is he?
@gcunit Careful. Numeracy and shrill accusations can't coexist in one fevered brain.
I find it weird how women can sexualise men but when it comes to women they would trash over anything of the sort.
"Hahahaha links cute bum tee hee hee!"
"So many shirtless Links! Blushes"
Ok, now make the same joke but about a female character. Oh.... You wouldn't.
I took a ton of screen shots in age of Calamity near the plateau. Simply because, it's quintessential botw. Such a beautiful moment in both of those games.
Your Traveler's Claymore is badly damaged. - lol
@YoungLink64 Hahahha, that’s great! I was being facetious, I know people use it. I never use it 🥳
@WoomyNNYes That's actually a good picture!
DAMAGED CLAYMORE NINJA APPROVED
Crazy how BotW hasn't lost any of its luster. 4 years later and it's still the most next-gen game available on Switch.
I find it weird how beta males like the writer of this article like to "ironically" sexualise men but when it comes to women they would trash over anything of the sort.
@pepepopo Well, except... as the byline of the article clearly shows, the writer of this article is a woman.
Somehow, I doubt that you're going to be the one to establish respect between the sexes.
@YoungLink64 Somehow I missed that update. It’s a life saver. Thank you.
@YoungLink64 Well, what I can manage in Dark Souls! I think the only ninja game I actually own on this thing is Cyber Shadow, the rest are on other systems!
Oh I like! This inspired me to look back 830 screengrabs ago to my very first ones, which naturally were all BOTW.
I was really smitten with the blood moon! I’m no photographer and didn’t take much time to frame cool shots, but even so there were some good ones I thought. It really is such an atmospheric, beautiful game, and the pics bring back memories.
@YoungLink64 it put a huge smile on my face when I got to it in AoC
@sketchturner l always hit the screenshot button when l'm trying to remember controls for a game xD I also hit it by mistake when playing monster hunter at some point because my palms get to close to the button. So many waste of screenshots l had
The only screenshots I ever made where by accident while strapping on the joycon for RingFit Advrnture.
Yes, about 90% of my screenshots on the Switch are from Breath of the Wild.
I think the reason for this Twitter trend is that Breath of the Wild is one of the few games I can think of where much of the art direction — including graphical style, lighting system, how the environment "frames" certain locations, color, weather systems, etc. — is specifically built for beauty and emotion. Not in the look-at-the-textures-on-this-thing sort of way but in a more nuanced, artistic sense. It's also more subtle than Okami, of course, which took the playable-painting thing more literally.
@pepepopo Don’t worry, nobody is going to sexualise you with an attitude like that.
It's been 4 years and i still not found the last 1 temple lol
I didn’t find all my clothes at the start so was unintentionaly shirtless for the first few hours (and all screenshots).
My last botw screenshot was zelda's jank smile
@YoungLink64 Haha, thanks! I speed run those games as a hobby, I LOVE Dark Souls (series) and Demon's Souls. Still trying to get the hang of Bloodborne and Sekiro. I'm not good at fast games. Weirdly, I'm good at bullet hell shooters. I'm strange.
Cyber Shadow is like a love letter to the late 80's, with some modern touches. I was actually stunned when I first played it...there's so much great attention to detail in the way the game plays, the mechanics, the way it guides you but doesn't hold your hand, excellent music and fun bosses...okay, enough gushing lmfao
CYBER NINJA APPROVED
@LXP8 @rushiosan https://archiverse.guide/
You're welcome
Let's see if this link works...
https://twitter.com/Asaki74154136/status/1368452317004111872
My first screen shots have been long deleted. I only kept a video of the Hero's Path showing me dying on repeat at the beginning of the One-Hit Obliterator (the trident) quest.
My only screenshot is also of riding the bear. I was so excited when it actually worked. Thought for sure the game wasn’t gonna let me ride the bear.
@BloodNinja “Cyborg Ninja Approved”. genji is that you?
@Asaki AMAZING Thank you, I found them all!! How did I not know about this until now?
Riding a bear huh? I don't think I even MET one, and I beat Ganon. Big game.
My wii u screens of BotW were uploaded to Facebook back in 2017. As were my Switch ones. Still have the Switch ones in memory as that is reserved for save games (20 odd gig free). Use memory cards for all the games.
@LXP8 that is unfortunate. I had given up on miiverse by then and simply used the capture feature in the browser to upload the pics to my facebook account. So managed to keep alot of my Wii U captures.
I remember my mates asking me what the hell Splatoon was when I posted some awesome pics of me beating the boss, it looked sensational.
@My_ultimate_is_ready Haha, mine was a metal gear solid reference.
@YoungLink64 Bloodstained is great, ghosts n' goblins is a little too hard LOL
@YoungLink64 You definitely will! 😂
I forget where I found this avatar pic but it blew my mind that I didn’t make the connection between the masks myself. Only recently did I realize that Skull Kid in Twilight Princess actually has the same eyes. Not sure what it all means...
I can't do this because I played it on release date but on the Wii U. I didn't have the money to day-one the Switch as well. ಥ‿ಥ
Luckily my first original screenshots were saved to my chromebook. Everything else up to 2020 was deleted
@Asaki Thank you very much, it worked! Most of my posts are still there.
