Re: Feature: 10 Overlooked GameCube Gems You Must Play

Yodalovesu

I like features like this. It's not current news or controversial or anything, but it's still good reading, especially for a long-time Nintendo fan like myself (and I imagine many other visitors to the site).

On topic, Four Swords will forever be one of the most fun video game experiences I ever had. For one glorious afternoon four of my friends just happened to all be together and have our gbas too. For most of the day we discovered an absolute gem of a game as we laughed, cursed at each other, and stumbled over the games puzzles. Sadly we never got together again to finish the game, but I'll always remember the great time I had with it for that one day!

Re: Playtonic Announces Tencent Investment And Major Expansion Plans

Yodalovesu

Awesome. Not sure how I feel about Tencent being the company that is investing in them, but Playtonic and their publishing arm is one of the brightest new stars in the gaming space over the last several years. I'd love to see them continue to succeed and expand their operations.

The true return of Rare is upon us!

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's N64 Emulation Is Serviceable, But Treasured Memories Deserve Better

Yodalovesu

I dunno. I never felt like I was being treated to special effects whenever I saw fog in an N64 game. Complaining about it being gone now definitely seems like a rose tinted re-telling of history.

Nintendo didn't promise "Remastered" versions of N64 games. (I got that with Ocarina on 3DS years ago). And new and improved versions won't be what I'm expecting when I log on to play them either. Having access to games I've either haven't played before or haven't played for decades will be enough of a joy for me.

You are fully welcome to complain about minor details if that makes you happy, of course

Re: Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Need Some Work

These articles that have a hot take headline and then rely on second-hand twitter experiences for evidence kind of suck. Also some of your personal experience that you report on in the article invalidates what you read on Twitter. That's some sucky journalism right there

Re: Video: Why Didn't Square Enix Port The Kingdom Hearts Collection To Switch?

Yodalovesu

"Hey guys, I'm in the industry so I totally know how this all works.

You see, Square makes more money if these are cheaper to produce. So, can you really blame them? (Don't forget I'm an expert!)

Expect more companies to choose to spend less money like this and know that this decision has been completely forced upon them solely because Nintendo hardware is too weak."

Re: Lil Gator Game Is An Adorable Adventure Waddling Onto Switch

Yodalovesu

Ew. My initial delight soon turned to disgust when I realized they had copied almost everything about A Short Hike - graphics, theme, climbing mechanics, flying mechanics, setting...

...still looks kind of fun tho. And I could be totally wrong. Maybe the full game is hiding a personality all its own

Re: Review: Baldo: The Guardian Owls - Exquisite Ghibli-Esque Art Can't Hide Tortuous Gameplay

Yodalovesu

While I can't necessarily disagree with too many points in the review, I think a 4 is way way too low. Taking bugs, and lack of polish into account, this is still a much better game than most of what is available on the eShop. Take away the polish and bugs and we're looking at an all time great indie here.

Regarding the difficulty, I think it needs to be said that - while the reviewer is correct in many ways - the game is not unbeatable as it stands. For instance, those moderately high cliffs that will kill you? Well, that same height of cliff always kills you. Fool me once... Right? Those combat encounters that seem impossible at first? Well, there's ways to beat them too (bum rush lizards with attacks to knock them on their back, dodging tentacle attacks according to sound effect, not according to animation), it's just that you need to figure those methods out on your own. It's a positive and it's a negative, it just depends on your point of view.

Same for the puzzles, I for one really appreciated playing a dungeon where I was not instantly aware of what the developer wanted me to do. It's not impossible to figure out, though, you just need to spend the time to learn this game's particular "puzzle language.". That's an aspect of gaming that's harder and harder to come by in this ninth (right? Tenth?) generation of gaming. It was prevalent in the early NES days and, personally, I kind of miss it. I want to fight for my victories, not have them hand delivered to me.

Just my two cents!

Re: Site News: So, Where's Our Baldo Review?

Yodalovesu

There's a weird trend going on with these comments.

People that have not played the game comment how they saw online that it's a mess. Other people respond and say what a shame that sounds horrible.

Meanwhile people that have actually played the game say they like it and are having a good time with it. Nobody seems to notice those comments though or reply and thank the user for letting them know their actual experience with playing the game.

Weird right?

Re: Site News: So, Where's Our Baldo Review?

I've been playing on Switch for about two hours and I haven't experienced a single "bug" so far. The game is gorgeous and the scope seems like it will be very grand. I'm having a great time with it. The first dungeon was a great challenge and none of it was really due to design issues. It's just a good dungeon!

There are issues though. The game is crazy hard and there is a bit of jank with combat and your dodge controls. If you are easily frustrated you will want to steer far FAR clear of this!

But if you are a long time gamer who sometimes feels like Zelda is a bit too much of a pushover, I think you'll find lots to love here. The positives far outweigh the negative for me so far
