If it's the case, I might be interested in getting the second or third model of "Switch2", wichever is the cheapest and sturdiest one.
Otherwise, maybe it would be time to get a Switch Lite, especially if there's a price drop. (Although, the number of games on it interesting me is worriyngly low, compared to DS and 3DS in their time.)
It looked good enough for me (and I liked the transparent blue colour), and no hinge is always a good thing. It had also a good resistance to hits, sadly mine mysteriously stopped turning on (blue led on, black screens) after 13-14months. A second identical model "died" the same way (this time, luckily, I had "hacked" it and kept my eshop saves), but after less than a year (and very little use since I was mostly away).
I ended up getting a discount (the 2DS price) to buy a NEW. (wich, for once, I broke myself). Sadly, only the 2DS had no hinge at the time.
Wow, the japanese cover looks like an actual "Famicom Wars" one. But the western one seems more logical since the Advance and DS games focused so much on characters than the game itelf. (Still voting for the jap. one since it takes me back to discovering the game on a SNes emulator before the Advance era.)
It's just a bit weird to see Terry do that (at least, for me). But I don't see how such a "joke" is condemnable.
"Sakurai has also had to explain why Mai didn't make the cut in Ultimate."
What? She could have been "recruited" for the game? Were her poses or breast size unsuitable for a familial environment? -_-"
"that is what the modern Pokemon entries have been lacking in with Sw/Sh reaching a new low in that regard by completely eliminating dungeons."
@Expa0 I thought the death of dungeons started with Ruby&Sapphire in the Advance days. I don't remember any actual dungeon in a pokémon game since the 32bits games. Only corridors where no research or being lost was possible. So your remark about S&S makes me wonder how they were able to eliminate dungeons.
PS: now that I think about it, one could consider the post-league cavern in S&M as a dungeon. But I didn't have that impression at all.
As a fan of the... third game on Super Famicom and regular Inazuma games, will I like this? This seems far less "RPG" like than the 16bits era ones I love. (Those ones had special techniques for several kind of moves depending on the characters, not only shoots.)
@Anti-Matter I played the games exactly the way they were too and it never prevented me to buy games since I dislike virtual copies, legal or not. ^^" (unless you consider the fact I was keeping saves cpopies separately since I'm easily losing things, like game cards, in order to avoid starting all over again once I find another card)
PS: thanks for the story below, it was fun to read.
@Alucard83 Same thought with how the title sounds. But, to be fair with the writer, you have to keep in mind that today is a time where entertainment products are consumed and then discarded to be replaced as fast as possible. In this regard, 2years and a half is a rather long time.
@Anti-Matter Why not simply "hack" the console? Thanks to this, I can use the exclusive US retail releases (or jap.imports) on my european console with no need of an additional one.
I am amazed that people consider the life duration of the N64's stick a problem. My 2 Nintendo official pads (unused) didn't wear off for years (I admit we only played MParty 2 for a year). The younger ( less used) one was actually totally fine for years until I moved out, unpacked it and the joystick suddenly lacked resistance.
First console, first problem: the micro of my regular Game Boy (bought in 1998 I think) died without a warning around 2002 (it had fallen a few times but never broke), giving me an incentive to buy the Advance sometimes later.
Today, the GB is dead since several years.
Bought in summer 99, my mail ordered N64 came... with a faulty Peritel adapter (for the AV cable). A second one was send, useless again. After a month sitting in its box, the console finally got some used at the third try. Anecdote: the last time they send us accidentally the whole cable+adapter twice, and both duos worked perfectly (one was later recycled for a GameCube).
Today, the console refuses to turn on, since I moved out with it two years ago. No idea why, maybe it didn't like the travel.
And then... and then came the battery era... Seriously ? My first 2DS (alpha blue or something) fell on the ground and died when it was 1year old (bought when the model was released). The second one, same model, couldn't charge anymore after a few months using it. I was told I was responsible (for almost always playing it on the sector). The battery wasn't to be replaced by Nintendo unless they could examine the console (modified) so I bought another identical 2DS (and a n3DS, just in case).
The third 2DS battery died slightly less than a year in, in the same way (despite paying attention to fully charge the console and never playing it plugged). Annoyed, I gave it to a repair shop that bought me an overpriced stupid battery (15euros for something that could not last for more than 30minutes, in low consumption configuration) then gave up on it.
Having switched to the n3DS, I sadly poured water on it, so I replaced it with a n3DS XL (no more simple "new" in supermarkets). This one lasted for the last 18months until the battery came out of it while I was away (it inflated after "overuse" and the recent heatwaves I guess).
Dedicated battery (with monopoly) should not be a thing for a device... I don't buy something to play with, only to be able to use it for a year or two, be it electronic or made from paperboard or wood.
So, the next Pokémon has a kind of N64 Hyrule plain where you'll see pokémon figures walk, right? (because the "large map connected to the rest of the world" description doesn't sound any different than the way the game was organized since Red)
Funny new gimmick, let's hope it doesn't last longer than its game (unlike mega-evos that stayed a bit too long).
@Majora101 "Making your Pokemon giant for a limited time while facing giant Pokemon that have no arbitrary turn limit on their giant state is bizarre"
Say that to Ultraman, the poor guy could only hold his giant size for three minutes to beat his (kaijû) giant opponents.
@Donutman If you want to play with your kid (if he can read, given the type of game this is), it could be more interesting to each have a copy (one of each name for collection sake since the catalogue of monsters is slightly different between them, but it's not mandatory) in order to be able to exploit the multiplayers aspect Pokémon has always been about: trading beasts and fighting against each other, you can even help your child by giving him/her a creature you trained, whatever...
Plus, one of this game's new gimmicks is the ability to meet and go against "Godzilla-sized" pokémon on the "central map".
I finally found a copy on Amazoone. I double-checked that it was a multi-lingual euro version of course. I just received it and it happens to be fully translated... in english (only the manual features the 5languages). Nice one for a game who crosses USA and Japan, I'll play it all in english -_- Well, at least, I hope I'll find someone willing to unpack the original game and distribute a voice patch.
@ZionWario No, I know it is there but I never get formless videogames unless they're exclusively virtual, incredibly expensive or 8-16bits. If I really can't get it as something solid, I'll eventually get an illegal copy while waiting for a used cartridge but it would be annoying for a end of life game with a probable limited output.
It's weird because the Blaster game was easier to get (too bad I had no money because it's now at 45€+)
Is this game even available in Europe? I'm in France and couldn't get it in my supermarket (nor could the man handling the videogame section find it to order !).
Great _ (I actually didn't believe in this possibility anymore) In the end, I'll have a L-5 game less to import (leaving only IEgo3, Danball2&3 more importantly The Snack World).
So, is this a combined release of the two initial versions of the third game (where you might choose in the beginning wich "route" you play) or simply the third version? I hope it's the third one.
"first worldwide application" means there were previous ones for single countries? Any example?
PS: Every time a rent service with monthly fees will appear, it will be labeled as "a Netflix", I guess? Is it to help dumb Internet people to understand?
Nice, thoughthey xould have released the 2nd illediately instead, with less than a year before the 3DS sees its final release. With YW4 coming ot in Japan, I guess this means i'll have to pray for an amateur translation if I want a last YW RPG once I clear the 2nd. (no intention to ever acquire a Switch)
@Fandabidozi This would be rather hard to sell to the targeted audience...
This is crossing two modern "improvements" I highly dislike:
"buying" the usage of cultural products without owning them for myself the way I want,
streaming (videos, TV channels, games, you name it) aka consuming some content temporarily through the phone line and depending entirely on the meteorological conditions and location.
Wow, Stadium came out around 20 years ago and it looks like the monsters are even further away from each other when hitting (if you can call this hitting)
"it certainly makes catching Pokémon more enjoyable and immersive and makes it rather easy to forget that you don’t actually fight the Pokémon at any point."
This must be. For the first few throws. Only for a very young child (who needs to be able to read though) will the novelty wear off after a few hours.
Also, the Three Birds or Mewtwo meetings weren't only about incessantly throwing balls at them, if at all. (other examples can be found among regular species, like hunting for an abra near Misty's town)
Add to this viewing monsters on screen and probably a lack of aggressive behaviour among EVERY species. And with the absence of map exploration (thanks to the removal of hidden map abilities and maze/dungeons) since years ago, what will remains? The cooperation (great idea), the remade arena battles (ok...), and throwing balls ? Plus the sometimes funny but usually annoying players fights. The next novel idea should be to make a version revolving entirely on throwing balls and the other a Stadium tournament only game and sell them separately.
@Krisi Yellow pikachus said their name in Yellow & a Stadium . But that thing of shouts being names started as an anime thing.
@Silly_G Moon's world seemed empty to me (and I only went through Red, Silver, Ruby, Black&Alpha). With the scale used in the game and responsible for their stretching, the towns looked like long ghost towns and were as frustrating as the original big center city of Red (Psychic Arena one).
The news could state the reason behind the update: to comply to the european rules (concerning users datas management). So you have a new version of the licence contract and Spot Pass was tweaked if I understood well. Seems like Miiverse was also removed (but not its icone, right?)
"What do you think?" The last Nintendo will welcome the last Smash Brothers ? OK. What about other UNKNOWN things ? (well, it was only the E3 so I didn't expect anything big on the other side)
(At least, it's not the previous game sold fully instead of piece after piece)
@Meaty-cheeky Weird. Every game had a manual back then, and each manual featured pictures showing how to hold the controller in case people were wondering. It was among the first things you could see in those handlets, and for a lot of games, it was actually self-explanatory after a few minutes.
@Panopticon Aha, I purchased the Majora's Mask 3DS version day one only because I never found an affordable RAM and cartridge back when the orignal was released. And now, I barely touch it because of weird things packed within the "remake" like this events book, and more importantly, the lack of controls compared to the N64 pad.
ANd I had the same problem when I tried to play on Wii VC or emulators
@Silly_G What were the paid DLCs for the game? I bought the cartridge and got the daily repetitive challenges but saw nothing else to download. Is it some cosmetic change or some more questions?
@cyrus_zuo Once I cleared a case, I tend to return to it right after in order to track the remaining coins and questions (forgotten or skipped) and there is no need to replay through the story at all. At least on the 3DS version.
Wait, the 3DS will get this "new Castlevania" ?! Great ! (I remember how I wished that the few 8bits Konami remakes for Wii would have been released as 3DS eshop games some years ago.)
About the fact that there are too much monsters species and that it can't keep up on adding more, even the makers recognized it a few years ago. What did we get as a result? Alolan forms (and more new species).
Simple idea: it's gradually becoming the RPG equivalent of any sport games if it did not already happened. So, maybe if the series was less of a mass produced thing (not sur eif it is the right expression)...
Also, I know all people mentioning "more exploration" refer to a wish for one of those trendy open worlds. But I'll say that I also want more exploration: those 3DS Pkmn I played always show me the obvious unique road I could follow even in caves and the likes, unlike the GB games that had actually places to explore and not just visit. I'm sure it would be impossible for a programmer of the current games to propose a dungeon à la Whirl Islands without being straight out slapped by the director or some other team leader.
The fact all map moves were directly given to the player as soon as the GBA or DS games era participated to weaken the exploration aspect too.
" if I don't want the games to be the same and don't want them to be different, what do I want?"
@JoeyJoey95 It's simple: it means that there has been way too much games and that it already reached the good balance (at least for you). From then, it could never do better nor change something. ^^
@Dijita What did S/M to make that more approchable? o_O I thought that it was the same easiness that was delivered in Alpha/Omega (except for the road to run to hatch eggs that was simpler then).
@Steelhead Nice to find comrades !
After Silver (and just enough R/S to hate them), I came back for Alpha (despite having given up on Pkmn thanks to Sapphire/Ruby) and apart from the fact I was playing Pkmn again and the fun of the Nav hunt, I didn't find the experience pleasant (though Moon was worse in that regard).
At least, the Alpha/Omega games gave me a chance to make every monster I could want at that time, I guess.
@LemonSlice I didn't find the answer so I decided to check for myself. A few minutes in currently, still not sure if I am going to buy it but it could very well happen. ^^
It looks like you're far less "vulnerable" than in Clock Tower: there is a menu for tools, you start with a cellular, etc.
edit, one hour in: the location is divided into several maps (I know the manor, the underground cave, the mine), you're given lots of phone batteries and food (healing item) AND have a regeneration room, you can throw debris (rocks, wood, bones), the background story is revealed progressively through diary pages and other written sheets, two "monsters" are chasing you (the "scissors boy" has been replaced with "the shovel giant" and some "candela" guy) but you can resist them before they kill you instantly and you can hide (in various places existing for that purpose) until they leave.
You'll have to find the other children who came with you. Also, it seems that there are several endings available.
The most annoying point is the systematic loading phase each time you change rooms.
@Sir_Anthony It makes the impression of being that way because the 3DS version was more of an afterthought who just needed a port of the cellular version.
Torn between trying to buy one or not. Basically, buying that gizmo would be like giving up on getting the dual-speed Super Nintendo of my dream (who could then be played on a good tv monitor).
The 70+€ range doesn't help either: it pushes me to compare this gadget with my N64 bought back in its early years. On the other hand, if I can really put ROMs myself on it...
@Balladeer I came to the comments section to ask the same thing. It feels like if this person had reviewed one of the versions in parallel to the other reviewer, the first pair would have earned a 6 and something like a strong 7 or 8.
Now waiting for a comparison with the prototype ROM hacked to be playable, like all others above me
@roykoopa64 Someone will "rip" the ROM away from the machine. Too bad there won't be anyone to put it on SFC/SNes blank cartridges because of the chip.

Wow, the japanese cover looks like an actual "Famicom Wars" one. But the western one seems more logical since the Advance and DS games focused so much on characters than the game itelf.

ANd I had the same problem when I tried to play on Wii VC or emulators
Re: Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle And The Millionaires’ Conspiracy DX Is Switch-Bound
Re: Inti Creates Announces New Bloodstained And Gunvolt Titles For Switch At BitSummit
Wait, the 3DS will get this "new Castlevania" ?! Great !
(I remember how I wished that the few 8bits Konami remakes for Wii would have been released as 3DS eshop games some years ago.)
Re: Review: The Alliance Alive (3DS)
Now, if only an imported special edition set was available here... (won't buy the PAL eshop_only version)
edit: well, a few regular game packs (with no bonus) were finally made available at decent prices on eBay. Got one!
edit: I actually got the package edition for the price of the simple boxed game. o_o
Re: Soapbox: What The Upcoming Pokémon Switch RPG Can Learn From Recent Pokémon Games
Re: Creeping Terror
Re: Poll: Which is the Best Super Mario Game?
Errm, why is Super Mario World 2 treated as a spin-off? o_O
Anyway, I still give my voice to it for both the 2D and all-stars categories.
Re: Creeping Terror
@LemonSlice I noticed this back then on the japanese e-shop. Is it something like the SNES horror game Clock Tower?
Re: Massive Nintendo Switch System Update - Version 4.0.0 - Adds Video Capture and More
@JHDK Or better: the ability to put them on some hard material and use them on whatever console you have at hand.
Re: Review: Metal Slug X (Switch eShop / Neo Geo)
@JaxonH Do you mean that a 3DS can play fairly some NeoGeo roms? o_O The least advanced ones, I presume? (no SvC for example)
Was it the 3DS or n3DS?
Re: Guide: Where To Find All The Upgrades In Metroid: Samus Returns
@NickOfTime90 At least, it's optional.
Still, that is a weird addition.
Re: Review: Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy (3DS)
@Sir_Anthony It makes the impression of being that way because the 3DS version was more of an afterthought who just needed a port of the cellular version.
Re: Poll: A Retro Quest - Were You Able to Buy a Super NES Classic Edition / SNES Mini?
Torn between trying to buy one or not. Basically, buying that gizmo would be like giving up on getting the dual-speed Super Nintendo of my dream (who could then be played on a good tv monitor).
The 70+€ range doesn't help either: it pushes me to compare this gadget with my N64 bought back in its early years.
On the other hand, if I can really put ROMs myself on it...
Re: Review: Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters (3DS)
@Balladeer I came to the comments section to ask the same thing.
It feels like if this person had reviewed one of the versions in parallel to the other reviewer, the first pair would have earned a 6 and something like a strong 7 or 8.
Re: Nintendo Has Announced the End of the Wii Shop Channel
@Sforzando The two Konami remakes, Contra and Castlevania? (never tested the Dracula game but the Contra one was pretty good).
Re: Review: Star Fox 2 (SNES)
Now waiting for a comparison with the prototype ROM hacked to be playable, like all others above me
@roykoopa64 Someone will "rip" the ROM away from the machine. Too bad there won't be anyone to put it on SFC/SNes blank cartridges because of the chip.
