Good news if you're waiting patiently for a Layton-based adventure on Nintendo Switch - Level 5 has confirmed last year's Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle And The Millionaires’ Conspiracy (which hit 3DS and smartphones) will getting a Switch port with an extra DX on the end for good measure.
The announcement was made in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. It was also revealed the new port will launch on 9th August in Japan. No word yet on an official release date for the West, but we imagine it's likely to make it over at some point.
Be sure to check out our review of the original in the meantime. Oh, and let us know what you make of the news in the comments below...

I bought this for 3DS at launch but haven't gotten around to playing it yet, will be interesting to see how the touch controls translate to a Pro Controller.
It'll be curious to see if the game will be playable in TV mode, given the touch screen gameplay of the series.
I think I'll end up purchasing this again
I just bought this for the 3DS...
Got this for iOS. It's cute, and some of the later bonus puzzles are great, but I wouldn't get it again for Switch. Works great as a smartphone game, if you have the patience to tap through five-minute chunks of conversations between each puzzle in the main story.
Really? I didn't expect this, I would've waited for the switch version!
Well the switch version is probably going to be overpriced anyway. I played it on Android. I always have my phone with me and now I can play puzzles whenever I'm bored.
Got it for iOS, but it didn't quite stick. Maybe I should try again. But probably won't double dip, iOS was like 12 bucks in the Russian App Store, while Nintendo still doesn't get that thing that is regional pricing.
But meanwhile I would love a compilation of older games for the Switch. Tried the first one out on an emulator for just half an hour, but boy it was good!
difficult to imagine playing without touch controls (ie: docked). would like to see how they handle this because it may mean the future of the series on switch
I bought this for iOS but I struggle to stay interested with games in phones and tablets. I mean it is the Layton experience perfectly captured on there. I was also bought the game on 3DS but haven't had the chance to play it thanks to a huge backlog. So maybe the Switch version will be the one to make me finally play it. I wonder what the DX content will be?
No thanks. Will probably be too overpriced here in Canada to make it worth buying. I will just get it for the 3DS
The puzzles in this entry of the series sadly weren't very good at all.
Not the news I wanted to hear, I am waiting for a sequel! Layton's mystery journey wasn't nearly as good as the other titles, but I still had lots of fun with it. It was implied that we would learn the whereabouts about Professor Layton (he's missing), but we didn't learn anything. However the ending gives the impression that it will be tackled in a sequel. I hope so. I also hope that we will get 1 big story and better puzzles. And we still don't know Sherl's background, or is that all just a joke?
You can bet that this Switch DX version will be hugely overpriced. The 3DS version was already hugely overpriced, this will be even worse!
I will not pay anything more than the phone price. It seems Level 5 likes to charge console gamers significantly more, and they can F right off with that behavior
I'm really glad that this is happening. One, big screen Layton!!! (Albeit junior) and second, I was put off by the 3DS version due to the obscene practice of paid DLC which I believe cost about as much as the game itself!
Level-5 would be absolutely stupid to excise touch controls from this release.
I have only just started playing Miracle Mask (so I have quite a bit of catching up to do) as I gradually explore my back catalogue of 3DS games. I was about 5 hours into Miracle Mask, but it had been a few years since I had played it last (and I had no memory whatsoever of the story or puzzles) so I started a new file.
These games have such lovely soundtracks. I would definitely be keen to buy if they were available.
It's good to finally get a Layton game on the big screen!
I had this on the 3DS and I had fun with it. The puzzles weren't quite as good as previous entries in the series but I liked the characters and the light-hearted story. I'd only get this again if there was significant extra content added.
Great news! Was about to purchase it on 3ds this weekend, the only game I'm missing in my Layton collation. Will wait for Switch version instead
I’m curious to see how the “tap everywhere on the background to find hidden puzzles and coins” translates to the Switch version when docked...
I have this on my iPad and the story is OK, but it feels like there are fewer puzzles than previous games and the dialogue has been padded to hide this.
@janfritz Me too.
Oh good, I still have to pick up and play this and Azran Legacy, I better get on the latter. Glad this means the series isn't dead after all.
Hard pass on this one. Easily the weakest Layton, unfortunately. It is good that this likely means there will be a new game eventually though.
Cool. I’m glad I waited now. Didn’t want to get until I finished Azran legacy. Now putting it off means I get to play it on the Switch with bonus content. I hope they’re quick about localizing.
By far the worst Layton game, I'd much prefer trilogy releases of the previous 6 games like they did with Ace Attorney.
I got this for Christmas, but have barely played it due to it being on the 3DS.
Not happy about them taking out touch control for the Switch version. I understand you need to add in traditional controls for docked mode, but leave the touch option since it's already there and the Switch has touch available in portable mode.
I REALLY wish we'd get another proper Layton game.
I've played through all of them including the Phoenix Wright one and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle And The Millionaires’ Conspiracy is EASILY the worst.
Being made for cell phones it lacks a proper story and instead has a whole bunch of mini stories that I assume were sold separately on phones.
You cannot easily access puzzles you miss, you have to replay the entire case!
Add those two big structural changes for the worse to Katrielle and cast being not nearly as likable as the Professor's crew, and you have a very blah game in what otherwise is an amazing series that always used to feel like a triple AAA title on the DS and 3DS.
i'm surprised they haven't ported any of the layton games to mobile yet
Never played a Layton game, but I looked up gameplay on youtube and going by it will be a easy pass for me. Not really into these slow puzzle kind of games. Plus it is just another port but this time it isn't a Wii U port it is a 3DS port to Switch.
For those worried about the touch controls while docked...I wouldn't be. Play World of Goo on Switch. The joycons can work fine for things like this as pointer devices. Just pop a small cursor on the screen to show what you are pointing at, and should be good to go.
Although, unless its greatly improved since then, I wouldn't recommend these types of controls for anything that you have to move quickly with, as it seems to de-sync and needs to have the cursor reset quite often with fast movements. But for something that's just simple point and click? Should work fine.
I've never played a game in the Layton series, as I'm not a huge puzzle games fan, but the Switch makes everything more appealing. If the Switch gets its own dedicated Layton game or some collection of the older games, I might finally give it a whirl, though my understanding is that this particular game, being a smart phone release, isn't that great. I could see a new Layton game having really clever puzzles using HD rumble; suddenly, counting the number of marbles in a JoyCon sounds like it might actually be purposeful.
And this is why I held out on buying the mobile version! This will be a fun addition to my Nintendo Switch!
Guess I will triple dip (mobile and 3DS). Never got around to finish the game, playing it on my phone didn't work out for me and I do not like playing on 3DS anymore after the Switch.
If it's not overpriced, I'll likely opt for getting it for the Switch at some point. I wouldn't mind compilations of the two trilogies as well; I still haven't played the prequels.
Never play it, will buy it.
Have it on 3DS, will buy again if price is reasonable.
This was by very far my least favourite Layton game. No cohesive plot, forgettable characters, uninspired puzzles, and a nonsensical twist ending that came out of left field. I would be interested in a sequel however, if the mystery of Professor Layton's whereabouts and Sherl's story are addressed.
I will definitely be checking it out!
In my humble opinion, LMJ didn’t really start to come alive until the final case. And even that was ‘the poor man’s Layton’. I don’t regret playing the game on 3DS, but it’s easily the weakest entry in the series, as far as I’m concerned. Whether or not I’d revisit the game on the Switch should it hit the States, I have no foreseeable plans.
@Mathieu_B Nail on the head. I agree wholly.
I should really go back and finish Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy...
@Silly_G What were the paid DLCs for the game? I bought the cartridge and got the daily repetitive challenges but saw nothing else to download. Is it some cosmetic change or some more questions?
@cyrus_zuo Once I cleared a case, I tend to return to it right after in order to track the remaining coins and questions (forgotten or skipped) and there is no need to replay through the story at all. At least on the 3DS version.
