Update: Despite giving Japanese consumers until March 31st to send in their broken 3DS consoles, Nintendo has now announced that repairs have been suspended for the following models as the parts required have now been totally exhausted (thanks, Nintendo Wire):
- Original Nintendo 3DS – Model No. CTR-001 – Serial numbers begin with “CW” or “CB”
- Original Nintendo 3DS XL – Model No. SPR-001 – Serial numbers begin with “SW” or “SB”
- New Nintendo 3DS – Model No. KTR-001 – Serial numbers begin with “YW”
Original Story [Fri 26th Feb, 2021 16:30 GMT]: It's hard to believe that 10 years ago today, the Nintendo 3DS first launched in Japan. Bringing us glasses-free 3D hardware and an outstanding games library, we've still got plenty of love for it, but support has gradually eased up ever since the Switch launched.
We've not seen a new first-party game since 2019, 3DS hardware production officially ended last September and now, Nintendo Japan has confirmed it will stop repairing original 3DS models after next month. While this only impacts Japan at present, we'd imagine the same stance will soon be adopted by Nintendo's regional offices.
Releasing an official statement, Nintendo advised:
Due to the difficulty in securing the necessary parts for repair, we will no longer be able to accept repair requests for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL as of March 31, 2021.
Even if units are sent in before this deadline, Nintendo has confirmed they may not be able to repair them, depending on whether the necessary parts are currently in stock.
For now, this only applies to the original line-up of 3DS and 3DS XL consoles. If you've got a New 3DS, New 3DS XL, or 2DS, Nintendo will still repair these.
Still got an original 3DS? Did you upgrade to a later model? Let us know in the comments.

There it is again, that dreaded March 31st date...
I have an original Electric Blue 2DS that came packaged with Mario Kart 7 so great I still get repairs
My new 3DS needs a new battery. Been meaning to call Nintendo
@Burning_Spear Its been 10 years, I think its reasonable to shut it down.
@RupeeClock maybe Nintendo knows something we don't. Is the world about to end?
The end is near
I would hope you can still get parts freely on places like eBay for self repair. Sucks for those who need warranty repairs / official repairs & parts from Ninty.
The parts are readily available on eBay and they’re actually pretty straightforward to repair yourself, there’s loads of guides on YouTube
@NinChocolate NOA sells replacement batteries on their website. They recently restocked XL batteries after being out for months, so I’ve got one coming in the mail!
@Burning_Spear
Lack of parts for old technology is not even close to greedy or evil, it's just inconvenient and Nintendo can't control that
I still have my original 3DS. Been thinking about finally upgrading to a 3DS XL. Would you guys say it's time to mod the old girl? Yes my 3DS is a lady LOL!
I'm just not sure if modding will get me banned from the eshop but at this point does Nintendo care? Since the 3DS is retired and all.
It way cheaper to buy "new" used one than to get your old one repaired anyway, so it's not a big problem IMO really.
March 31 is the Nintendopocalypse, clearly.
@Burning_Spear so... a parts shortage is a “greed and evil” thing? Your statement is a bit confusing, Nintendo can’t control the supply chain of these parts. The manufacturer of these certain parts could have gone out of business and there isn’t an alternative.
One day they will stop fixing drift issues because of parts and then those who say repairs are fine will have some creative things to say.
God what's next, Nintendo shuts down on March 31st?
I LOVE my 3DS XL sooo much. I spoiled myself and have 3 of them. I only use one, but twice a year I make sure to connect the other two to a charger to keep the battery healthy should my main one fail.
It does look like they've already stopped taking any of the 3DS family that can display the 3D effect :/

This is BAD news. I HAVE to get my silver MH4U edition fixed! Now I know I’ve waited too long. And if it goes down again... MAN! I’ve got too much invested in it. All my games are downloaded on a huge SD card. Never mind my ambassador games.
Welp og zelda edition. Time for you to sit on a shelf.
This was unfortunately inevitable; parts from various manufacturers get discontinued all the time as devices go out of date and components are harder to secure. When it comes to technology, ten years is an amazing timespan.
I have a red OG 3DS that still works pretty well; I've only had to replace the battery so far. I am glad I also picked up a N3DS XL should that one ever kick the bucket.
So, uhhh... happy birthday?
All the more reason they should port the 3DS versions of Ocarina and Majora to their modern platform.
Fortunately I upgraded to a refurbished New 3DS from Nintendo just before they stopped selling those. So that will at least prolong the life of my 3DS collection for a while... provided nothing breaks.
And there goes the greatest console of all time. This is a sad day.
It also makes me appreciate MS's BC a lot more.
@KateGray @RupeeClock

I bought my N3DSXL when it released. It was my first 3DS, and one of my most beloved consoles. I still play it and love it, but would love some valuable digital discounts. I'll still buy games for it!
MH4U, Fire Emblems, Etrian Odysseys, SMT games... Damn this little bugger is one hell of a workhorse!
I have a New 3DS XL that came with Majora’s Mask because my original aqua blue one gave up the ghost. Not that I rely on Nintendo for repairs but it’s still sad. It’s my favourite handheld by a country mile.
@XiaoShao ya I saw the 3DS XL batteries on there, I may order one of those too for my XL in the future. I didn’t see New 3DS so hopefully they can ship one from their repairs dept
Several years ago, I sent my daughter's original 3DS to Nintendo for repair. The thing was a wreck, literally held together with masking tape, one of the speakers didn't work, the 3D slider was broken. Nintendo sent back a refurbished like-new 3DS XL. My daughter was ecstatic.
guess we should start preserving the original models before they become hot ticket items for nostalgia!
but for real, the original 3ds design is so gorgeous
As long as I can can send my New 2DS XL to get it's battery replaced or have it get a tune up that's all I care about for the most part. Though I worry about sending in my Switch(since I've had the console for around three years and done so much with games that don't support cloud back-up(Splatoon 2, Pokémon Sword, and Let's Go Pikachu)that if anything were to happen to it I would majorly beside myself for losing a massive amount of progress)to get it's battery replaced & fix the kickstand due to fear of it being stolen the shipping process/being returned or not arriving back in time before a major online event.
I remember the time when I was a super excited year 7 kid going with my mum to my local GAME early morning on the launch day to pick up my aqua blue 3ds! (Costed £230 at that time lol). And then when the "New" models came out, I upgraded to a New 3ds XL and sold my original console. I sadly regret selling it though, that little system had nostalgic value. I only got £55 for it, was just thinking about money at the time :/
Does Nintendo know something about 3/31 that we don't?
@RupeeClock Makes sense. March 31st is their fiscal end of the year.
At the very least, there's an easy explanation why games are being discontinued then. If they can funnel all of their sales before that date, it makes their financial reports look extra good. It must be easier for them to revolve everything around that date when sales numbers and fiscal reports already are. Either that, or it's a very common fiscal year end for a lot of other companies, so maybe they'll know that it'll be extra hard to secure parts in the next fiscal year.
SO evil and anti-consumer. Especially during a pandemic. It's Nintendo's responsibility to repair these consoles whenever they break or give me a new one. I should be able to send in my SNES or Virtual Boy and get it repaired.
Running out of parts is so anti consumer! (/s)
But it's not their responsibility at all.
Once it's out of warranty and past their legal obligations they don't have to repair.
Like it's a pity but "evil" grow up. 3ds is discontinued ,original models 10 years old they owe you nothing.
Offering repairs until now is more than most companies ever do.
You will hear the phrase they don't make that part anymore or a replacement job will cost you more than its worth alot in life. Its part of life.
Products get old manufacturers move on.
@Burning_Spear
Totally!! And Panasonic should fix my busted VCR while they are at it!!! 🤡
@KillerBOB Hey, let me know. My VCR needs repair too. And the '70 Duster I've got on cinder blocks in my front yard.
My 3DS camera stopped working about 6 or 7 years ago. I'd had my fill of faceraiders and the AR minigames by then, and it wasn't heavily used elsewhere so I never actually got round to sending for it to be fixed :/
End of an era sadly.
That reminds me, I need to look at how to replace the rubber part of my circle pad on my original aqua blue 3DS. Darn thing fell apart a short while ago.
Nooooooo, how will I get my 3ds repaired if it needs it? Can I send it somewhere where there'll give it a better battery, new shell, and new circle pad?
My 3DS is fine, but I don't use it that much anymore and it isn't that old, so...
Jealous of the SEGA AGES volume 3 in the article header. I had to "cheap out" and get a used Japanese New 3DS and a download for it.
Well at least the 2DS are still safe, chances are those glassless 3D effect chips are no longer in production anymore and are not in high demand not to mention those things are the very reason Nintendo made the 2DS to begin with as the glassless 3D techs in those got Nintendo into more trouble than it needs to be.
@Burning_Spear,
Or another example of your overused comment.
I was late to the party. Got a New 3DS XL in November 2016. Mario Kart 7 was so awesome, I knew I had to get the Switch when it launched March 2017.
And So It Begins...
So nintendo switch will be repairable for 10 years?
I hold Reggie personally responsible for this.
i mean, what else can they do if the parts are literally not available?
I better hope my 3DS never breaks then. Still in pretty good condition.
I just called them yesterday, finally, to set up a repair. What the crap! Guess this saves me $107...
Thanks Nintendo, you tripled the cost of my 2DS XL on eBay. Much appreciated. I really need the funds right now, so keep discontinuing your stuff. THANK YOU
DESPERATE NINJA APPROVED
Wonder how long the switch will be repaired for.
It feels like such a short lifespan. I know it was a long time, but that generation went by so quickly....
Maybe this is a down side of "withered technology" - parts aren't available that long....
I'll forever miss the 3D effect. It was the best thing to ever grace the small screen ,by making it seem larger with dept. 3DS XL looked like it had a bigger display area than Switch, due to that 3D depth.
No new hinges for 3DS XL owners then. Be as careful as you can (eg. leave the XL open) as the right hinge will break.
It always puzzles me that NCL repairs devices longer than the western territories.
Am I right thinking "stop providing parts" includes stop selling batteries to users?
In this case, does anyone know what are the better makers to buy some spare ones from?
